This is the Europa Universalis Review and Guide you have been waiting for, as I decided to look back, see what is now, and what's come together in these past 11 years to create arguably the best strategy game of all time. Paradox Development Studios have never created a game so comprehensive, so addictive and so all-encompassing as this, and even though I have hope, it is tough to imagine someone doing it again. But hey, I'm a hopeful guy.
This is a full review of Europa Universalis 4, where we're going through virtually every mechanic, every feature, and all of the most important aspects of EU4 - yes, even that incredible soundtrack.
I've structured this review in a way that people who are new to the game might also understand what's actually going on, meaning that I explain the mechanics as I review them, and I hope that if you're new, that you'll want to try it out for yourself afterwards, and let me know in the comments if you do.
And of course, let me know in the comments what you think of this video and of EU4 itself, and make sure to leave a like, a comment, and subscribe to the channel :)

The Paradox masterpiece. I am so excited to watch this
Please let me know what you think when you're done! :D
A true masterpiece of a video game
This game is my favorite one, having played more than 4.000 hours in game. My favorite nation is Byzantium and have made two world conquest with one being one tag, one culture, one religion.
I never thought about how good the soundtrack actually is. 54:54 Last man stranding always seems to play when I'm severely outnumbered and my nation is about to collapse if I lose one single battle. Like when I took one too many provinces in the HRE as Sweden had to fight all of Germany. Always check the coalition size before taking provinces in the holy roman empire...
Last Man Standing has quickly become my favorite war track. It hit me the first time I heard it, and it played as I was desperately defending Constantinople from the Ottomans, when the European mercenary reinforcements came. Absolute insanity and there's nothing quite like it.
This is some top tier content! 🎉
I already played Paradox games when they were quite niche. EU2 and HOI2 were my first ones. As a geograpics and history buff i was really excited when i discovered them. Then EU3 was about to get released and i had high expectations. It was a huge jump from the predecessor but the giga ugly map and the very clunky nature of the game left alot to be desired, was never able to fully enjoy that game. Moved on to Victoria 2 and HOI2 Darkest Hour for a while. Both were excellent games at the time.
Then EU4 dropped. I played it asap and it caught me right away. Even the very first version of it did make EU3 into irrelevant. Much smoother game and the depth was only getting bigger.
Here we come to Paradox DLC policy. Its a double edged sword. On one side some DLCs are never worth the money for what they offer and old DLCs should get put together into bundles with a big permanent discount. But thats not the case. So if you dont get them at sales or on key sites you ll see an ridiculous price tag for this game on Steam. Something that scares potential players away. Bad strategy here.
But on the other side they kept on expanding the game. The amount of content that flew into it is outsanding and is the reason why its hard to get fed up with the game. Sure, some updates were disastrous and there was a time when the game suffered from a lets say not so great lead Dev. But they always made up for it. Fixed broken updates and put a competent man back into charge who guided Eu4 to its current state. And this state has to get called nothing else but Paradox masterpiece. I doubt they will ever make a better game, looking at the new generation of Devs who re responsible for Vic3. But id be glad if im wrong here.
Anyways. Tipping my head to Paradox here. It has been quite a journey with them since the days when they were nonames who made some niche games to now them being the big dogs of a gaming genre that has not only attracted millions of players to map games but also made them interested in history, combining fun with education in the process. And EU4 has been without the doubt the star of this show.
A true masterpiece! More content like this please!
Okey, hear me out. EU4 song track on x2 slaps hard
I hope they map look a little bit more better.
Bro forgot about southeast asia in the intro
bum question, but are u using a graphics mod? i see that the water isnt the same
Yes I am indeed using a water mod, it’s the only mod I’m using haha
Thank you sir
Thank you, sir
I do not agree, usually the biggest war in my playthroughs are the coalition wars 😂😂😂
The religious wars most of the time are puny, the coalition wars are the big deals.
I remember one ocasion, few years ago, when i wanted to complete the achievement with all spanish missions...i was fighting a war against monster ottomans with same ammount of army as myself and a large coalition fired, that had more troups than me and all of my colonies :))
The song part went on far to long lmao
UA-cam SAID IT WAS MY TURN TO MAKE A VIDEO
I enjoyed the game 'till Common Sense after that game became more and more complex and I didn't feel the incentive to learn the game again.
It's a good game but the blobbing in this game is awful, hopefully EU5 is a lot better. Not happy about the 1337 start date for it though, that should be a CK start date.
Mods fix the bloobing like "Reasonable blobbing" or fallen empires.
Have paradox told why they choose 1337?

Wasn't really a review, just lavishing praise upon the game while recapping its mechanics
that's exactly what a glowing review is
EUIV is alright, HoI is the real S tier Paradox game
Hm can you eleborate more? I played hoi4 quite a bit but it usually becomes insane slog after 1943 with insane amount of troops, static unmovable lines and low fps.
in what way is HOI4 better?
I dont hate HOI4, played it quite a bit. But its a dumbed down cartoon of what HOI used to be.
EU4 has been much more truthfull to its roots. Its also the bigger game by far. HOI4 becomes boring way too quickly while EU4 never fails to deliver.
@@somerandomyoutubeuser271 both games can be a slog late game but it is worse in hoi4
hoi 3 yes, hoi is hoi 3 for dummies.
The only modern PDX game that I will never play. EU3 turned me so totally against the franchise with its horrible design decisions and gameplay that I refuse to buy the dozens of DLCs that it would take for this thing to be enjoyable. Hopefully EU5 is a total departure from the design of the previous titles.
ok
Oh truly? Which design choices did you not like? I'm very excited for EU5 myself!
EU4 is a totally different design to EU3. I kind of consider that a negative as I like EU3's design but if you hate it you'll probably like EU4
Oh boy then you missed out big time.
I was also disappointed by EU3. The ultra ugly map and clunky nature of the game made me never come to terms with it.
EU4 on the other hand is without a doubt the greatest map game ever made. The DLC policy is questionable, agree. But you can get all DLCs on Humble Bundle, Steam or other sales for a bargain these days.
Wouldnt put too much hope into EU5. There is no way it can surpass EU4 right away after all that content that got added into the latter over all those years. Also the example of Vic3 is concerning. And id drop the thought that EU5 would depart from the DLC policy, it prints way too much money for them to give up on it. With low expectations you cant get disappointed too much.
If EU4 with all DLCs is on Humble Bundle or a Steam sale for like 30 €/$ i highly recommend to get it. Thats a steal for the best game Paradox ever made.
@@ManuR-l4m depends what you like. If you want to paint the map in a sandbox EU4 can't really be beat but EU3 follows actual history a lot more closely. Although there are mods like M&T that improve EU4 a lot from that perspective.
Biggest issue with it now for a new player is that there's so much bloat and it costs literally hundreds of dollars to get everything at least legally.
but it's certainly a good game and a lot prettier than EU3
