Exemplar is a class there's been a lot of talk about. For my part, I've never found the original pitch particularly appealing, but when I really dug into the class I found myself pleasantly surprised! It's a balanced utility martial powerhouse, and its narrative possibilities are a lot wider than you think, tag along and see with me! I'm also going to dig a little less into items for this and f...

Pathfinder Second Edition REMASTERED Class Tier List
27:35 Just finished GMing my first adventure 1-4, and holy Gods, I couldn't get 2 of my players to level up on their own. They'd wait until the last second and take up time I could be using to prep.
Ok, so assuming the GM allows a rare ancestry such as Sprite or Awakened Animal... could you have a tiny PC just get actual cover from their medium sized thralls? That sounds incredibly funny (though it definitely would take the gish-options out of the equation... i think. Sprite necro gish with a bone needle for a short sword sounds like a fun concept though).
That would work! Excellent use of Thrall as well.
I really wish that traced runes would remain for a whole minute. I really love this idea of a trade-off between continuing to benefit from a runes passive effect vs getting a major effect right now. Its a really interesting tactical trade-off and leads to very interesting decision making opportunity imo. At also allows for a play-style that maybe doesn't even focus on invoking runes and chooses to take the role of more of a support caster, who after applying their buffs spends their time doing different action (Ones they got through an Archetype for example). But since right now they only last until the end of your next turn, that decision is kind of made for you. Right now the only relevant question is if the active effect is worth your action economy, which it probably almost always is. Otherwise the class is amazing though.
I think if they lasted longer then the passive effects would need to be much weaker since there is no save against being traced on
@@unlimiTED69 I don't think they would have to be much weaker, they don't seem that strong to me. The buffing ones a similarly powerful and those can be permanent. Or do you have a specific one in mind?
I agree that having the passive effects last for a minute would make a more passive playstyle more viable, and I think it would also help a lot with the issues I brought up in the video that the invocation feats have. I don't think Paizo is going to go that way though, it seems like their intention is that you Trace and Invoke as a loop, rather than making a conscious effort to a single playstyle. Maybe it would get too overwhelming/powerful if you could set up and then Invoke too many things at once.
@lexchxn Yeah, you are right, it would also solve those issues. And yeah, I also thought about whether it would be too powerful if we could stack many runes and invoke them more action efficiently, but I personally think it wouldn't. Firstly, its not THAT much more action efficient, with most creatures not seeing much more than 2-4 rounds anyway. So, using that assumption, AT BEST you get double the action efficiency on the invoke. Since you have the trace the runes too though, I think it comes out to roughly 50% extra action efficiency (assuming you can use the 1 action trace, otherwise it is even worse). On top of that, the value you get is very backloaded, also reducing its value and increasing counterplay opportunity. If you jump through so many hoops, I think its fine to reward the player with higher value, as long as it isn't gamebreaking (Which I don't think it is, fir yhe aforementioned reasons). On top of that, I believe there is a clause saying that an individual creature can only be affected by one instance of a particular rune at a time, further capping how gamebreaking this could become (So you can't just stack infinite damage runes for example, you are limitedby the amount you know). Sorry for the long rant. Long story short: I think it would be completely fine to introduce that change. And even if it would require slight nerfs, i think it would be worth it. But if that is not the direction the want to go, it would be a little disappointing, but understandable.
Paizo should just add a trait that's "not a spell but acts like it for all those things" and apply it to kineticist impulses, runes, and whatever else shenanigans they come up with, and just make things refer to the trait. Maybe its a bit late in the day for that post-remaster, alas, but it would make the wording simpler.
Agreed on invocation feats, spending what is very likely 2 entire turns worth of actions for a minor bonus seems less than ideal.
This is great. I love the fact you give sample builds; I can’t find anyone else who does that
If your biggest issue with a class is that one cool option will outshine other, equally awesome options, than that seems like a damn good class
Will you create a combat demo for the runesmith like you did for the other classes? Those were my favorite part (partially because they're what the video medium is best for, and also partially because I just like the way you run them so smoothly)
I have something brewing, but it isn't exactly a Runesmith demo. They're involved though!
Looking forward to it!@@lexchxn
Beside giving them martial weapons and medium armor, this class seems to play more like a caster.
Regarding adding spells to your prepared spells: The text under dirge has the exact same wording as for the (remastered) wizard's spellbook (except occult instead of arcane, obv). The interesting part is in "Learn a Spell". It reads "A spell you learn is added to your repository of spells, such as a spellbook for a wizard [...]", so if you learn a spell, you simply add it to your dirge. No difference, no problem 👍
Thank you! I see so many people on the forums arguing about this it's not that hard guys!
Thanks for the video. The biggest issue of the class seem to be the thralls and focus spells. Plenty of times in the video, if the tralls could been moved or attack (as a option on the create thrall cantrip), some results would be very different. About the spells they seem a little weak compared to the cost in focus point and effects they create. Overall, it looks like a balanced class but I don't know if they fit well the concept of a necromancer compared with some options we had before (like a summoner with undead eidolon or a reanimator/undead master wizard). If they can fix the thralls to make them more than walls it could help.
Note that with the Reach of the Dead feat, the pitiful 10ft range of Bone Spear can easily become a 70ft range, for the low price of sacrificing an extra thrall!
You had Gwynnyvere use a nice rotation several times -- Create Thrall twice *without* attacking, then Draining Strike an enemy and sacrifice three thralls for it. However, you can be more strategic with this: You can start your turn with a Draining Strike and then Create Thralls twice (swapping order of actions) allowing you to attack with the thralls (at MAP -5 and -10, which can still easily hit the big zombie and trigger its weaknesses)! This adds even more tactical versatility to the class, as you're basically sacrificing some upfront damage for future damage, and risking the enemy moving away before the extra thralls get used up.
Wow, the gods really don't like Gwen! I'm surprised and pleased at how tanky this class ends up being with body blocking, battlefield-clogging, and self-heals too. I *guess* the ability to give yourself flanking at any time kind of makes up for the low weapon proficiencies... But I'm still sad that they didn't really give melee necromancer that much support.
Great vid! I've been GMing a solo game for my wife where she's played a Bones Oracle so far, going for that necromancer vibe. This is the perfect class to swap to, and I'm so glad it's out! The breakdown really helps. I'm tempted to wait for this to get its next pass, because the "maybes" keep worrying me a little... And I'm a little afraid what she might pull off with "repeat a spell" or something.
Great video! I've been putting together a tanky necromancer for a lvl5 playtest next week, with the idea of trying to really use Muscle Barrier's +1 status bonus to Athletics (alongside the temp HP) and the availability of a Scythe's item bonus to really Trip as much as possible.
Tumble Through only works on 1 enemy so I think if you have two thralls in a line it's an actual impassable wall without taking 2 actions
Meow! 😾
Yo. Poppet character. Whoo!
KITTY!
I really appreciated how you showed them in play. Bone spear, great damage scaling. The temp health ability is bonkers! I like how you tried melee. There should be some work to improve melee a bit imho. Doesnt need to be too crazy. Perhaps change the amount healed or even allow for crit on the heal.
Making the heal equal to the additional spirit damage would be perfect, I think. Simplifies play, reduces time it takes to resolve at the table, is more thematic, *and* lets it benefit from critical hits.
Pet the cat! The names of the characters made me think of the Arthurian legend, was that the intention? Edit: typo, plus neat, it actually linked relevant videos to the comment, I haven't seen that before! Edit edit: the edit seems to have wiped the relevant links. We'll see if they return.
I did! After the video- she's too cute not to. And no, it was not intentional reference.
The most balanced approach to the tumble through question would be the autosuccess one IMO. In that case it would STILL a cantrip that creates difficult terrain + many other benefits later
I agree! Would just like to see it written out in the final product.
Nice over view!
I love it. I felt 1e was too much book keeping. I think this is perfect. I would like the thralls to have more move options but it is okay. Super stoked. I would love to hear your thoughts as you play it. I would love to also see another subclass on release focused on blood
Great video and in general I kinda like the thrall idea to facilitate easy of play. But a lot of this classes features seem undertuned/"undercooked". For example, why give a feat for weapons when the class has at most expert lvl attacks? I don't like that it has to be an "int" (prepared caster) and even mostly pure caster class. And why so few spells? With 1-2 spells per rank, I can't even "flexible spell preparation" it. Overall i don't like it and that sucks for a fan of necromancers.... .
It is worth remembering that not all play goes to 20, where 'no higher than expert' matters. Going melee with necromancer in let's say beginner's box(or any lower lvl adventure, that's just the one I can think of from the top of my head) would work okay etc. Less slots is a trade off for more focus on focus points like psychic gets.
@@The_Yukki" 'no higher than expert' matters" Every +1 matters. If you are fine gimping yourself because the designers can not think 1 step ahead, I have nothing more to say to you. As for spells i more or less get it but I personally don't like prepared casting. And loved to be able to go for the archetype.
@@TheBall12 I implore you to read what I wrote, I said it doesn't matter in low lvl campaigns, pretty much every full caster has the same kind of option, they get ability to use weapons but they're not really worth it past lvl 4, where martials get expert prof while you're stuck at trained until 11.
@@The_Yukki Irony is that the (necro) feat for weapons is a lvl 2 feat so have fun enjoying your weapon for 2 lvl. silly.... low lvl campaigns...
@@TheBall12 I actually missed that it's a lvl2 feat. Yea that's a fair bit worse then.
I have been waiting all week for your video!!! Edit: Kitty kitty? Edit 2: How did you get Necromancer in Pathbuilder?
Thanks for watching! I hope it was helpful. I used this wonderful Pathbuilder pack by Background-Ant-4416: www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/1h9pzld

what are your initial thoughts on necro and runesmith the playtest is out on demiplane
I'm actually working on a Necromancer video scheduled to come out this Friday! I might do Runesmith later as well, but this is turning out to be a big project. Initial thoughts though? Both classes are good, Necromancer seems like it needs some clarifications and Runesmith seems like it needs some balance tuning. Here's the announcement: bsky.app/profile/lexchxn.bsky.social/post/3lcrwl7y56s25
Hi Lex, great overview! I have not been that interested in the Exemplar, but your points regarding flavoring might actually help me find a way to enjoy it. I am wondering about some interactions between Ikons - say you chose to go with the Shadow Sheath and the Barrow's Edge for an assassin concept. Would you rule that a dagger imbued with Barrow's Edge could be loaded into the Shadow Sheath, so that when you Spark Transcendence with the Shadow Sheath the spark is moved to the Barrow's Edge which you just drew (and vice versa)?
I'm glad my video was able to help! I really do recommend the class, which is a bit of a surprise to me given how much I dislike the default flavouring. Yes, I would! I believe what would happen is you would complete Liar's Hidden Blade, drawing a duplicate dagger from the Shadow Sheath, and your spark would move into the original dagger- the actual Barrow's Edge. It's then ambiguous if the duplicate, RaW, gains Barrow's Edge's Immanence and Transcendance abilities, but I think it's in the spirit of the class. The only thing to keep in mind is that you'd only be getting the bonus damage from Barrow's Edge, since the bonus damage from Shadow Sheath is part of its Immanence ability. So, no "stacking".
Druid? A? pre remaster? i believe they are s minimum, competing with likes of cleric. primal spell list is not the best; but i believe their strength more than makes up for it. personally one of my favorite combos was storm order + mist child; this creates almost unkillable caster that can be side by side with melee guys to help them out with their spells. fighter is another one i really cant understand. i believe what polearm fighter brings to the table is incomparable with simple "damage" if an enemy is tied up on the ground and has fighter just standing over them ready to crit if they dare to flinch is something damage cant replicate. the spellcaster giving you +6 to hit is bad argument. fighter gets more chances to crit, trip, and prevent opponents from dealing damage. this saves resources for tougher battles, something damage cant achieve. i even remember how once my fighter prevented several close calls by shutting down an opponent before they could do any damage. inventor above alchemist makes my heart cry. i would not compare a class that has chance of losing their class feature in middle of combat to an alchemist. not very weird but i wonder why investigator is below barbarian? good investigator absolutely dwarfs a good barbarian in damage department. my eldritch shot investigator had 1 to 3 odds of finishing relatively challenging boss fight in 2 turns. meanwhile barbarians cant get their rage on ranged attacks. pre remaster witch? a tier? i feel like that's generous. WISARD NEXT TO INVENTOR?!
Thanks for your PF2e content, there definitely isn't enough of it I'm planning of starting a flame boi in my next campaign and your video was super helpful.
I love how customizable the exemplar is with all the different ikons. One of my favorite classes in pf2e now
I keep hearing how the dedication for this is broken? Should probably hold until the video is over to ask thoughts on that
It's one of the stronger dedications for sure, but it's only really "out there" in a free archetype game, which is not what the system is designed around. And even then, it's 1-4 to 2-8 extra damage- not negligible, but not at all a balance concern. As I mention in the video, the only real issue is some isolated abilities with broken effects. By and large the class and its archetype are plenty fine in my eyes.
I think the dedication feat should not grant the full suite of ability for an ikon. I see alot of suggestions by others to require the imminence ability locked behind a feat at 6th level and above.
Your timing is absolutely flawless I did my best at making a Thor inspired Exemplar earlier today
I very much want to try this game.
Great analysis! It seems like a trait's relation to the power budget came up a lot, I wonder if it might be useful to rate them as "Fairly represented by power budget," "Undervalued by power budget," etc, although that might require a more mathematical analysis of weapon base cases and comparing similar weapons and stuff. 46:58 While there aren't monk weapons with forceful, the Mountain, Gorilla, and Stoked Flame stances give unarmed attacks with it, which are fun to use. :)
Really love this content, thank you for keeping it simple and interesting. Looking forward to the next installment :)
This is perfect timing, just last week I decided to stop brainstorming and start putting together my ideas for a new game and system. A lot of this has been very helpful in me organizing ideas, and a finding that I've overlooked a few important aspects. Thank you!
i really look forward to see more, the settings is very interesting to me
I love this way of doing the tierlist, adds some much needed granularity. Also seeing all the error bars lined up is super satisfying. Really impressive that you did this whole two hour video in one take (at least not with any cuts I noticed). You called out Dirge of Doom as a super good bard option, and I recently saw a video by thrabenu_gaming arguing that it's not all that good, in short because its range forces you to be perilously close to enemies, you may overlap conditions with your allies since they're likely trying to apply frightened as well, many enemies are immune to frightened, and you can't combo Fortissimo with DoD. I'm curious if you have any opinions on this? Never played a bard so I was fairly convinced by his video, although there were some counterpoints in the comments. I'm definitely biased but I wish you'd included Scroll Thaumaturgy when talking about the Thaumaturge. I love having a whole utility caster in my back pocket (or my Retrieval Belt). Definitely agree that the implements make the man (or woman or other). Overall, great video, I'll definitely be referencing it next time I make a character. Thanks for making it!
Thanks for the comment! I think Dirge of Doom is a super great tool, but one that, like most tools casters have access to, should be used when it's appropriate. I think it's important to understand the weaknesses of our abilities, even when they're incredibly strong. Shhhh, don't tell anyone about Scroll Thaumaturgy- They're mad enough at us for Diverse Lore!
@@lexchxn Very true, thanks for the response! Hehe, Thaumaturge gang 😈
Blame!, Rainworld, Bleak Faith Forsaken, Lorn’s Lure i absolutely adore megastructure worlds and stories, just such a visceral melancholic feeling to be traversing something infinitely vast and older than thought, wildly looking forward to this series! Would you have any other megastructure content you would personally recommend?
Love Lorn's Lure- Naissance is a solid shout! There's really not enough megastructure stuff out there, something I (hope) to aid with this project.
Hi Lex! This series may not have the same traction as your usual PF2E videos, but I'm looking forward to seeing this!
Thanks! I'll always make art that interests me and that I think is worth making, whether it pulls views or not. I really appreciate the support.
The way Double Tap works almost reminds me of Pummeling Style from Pathfinder 1e, a Feat that made it optimal for every single melee build to grab Improved Unarmed Strike early on in their progression, no matter what weapon they were wielding. Pummeling Style was a Style (Basically the precursor to 2e's Stances) Feat that made you roll all your melee attacks, then combine the damage rolls of all hits into a lump sum... This meant that you could easily overpower Damage Reduction on any melee build (In a related note: Ranged had it's own version called Clustered Shots).
Please ignore! I missed the word “not” in your sentence. Apologies, carry on, nothing to see here! (withdrawn: Thats a pretty terrible definition of OSR at 1:59)
I know you said you're not getting into items, but Kinetic Activation for Wand of Longstrider on an Air Kineticist is great!
I don't really understand people's lamentation of this archetype. You don't pick this of you need a healer. You pick this of you any a buff/debuff martial with some buff, utility and healing options. I consider opening a fight by giving everyone +1 hit/-1 hit,+1 AC/ or -1 AC to be of Better value than hoping you hit your spell strike. Not to mention you great initiative rolls. Not too mention the only class that can bane mindless creatures (normally all mental abilities don't work on them, this includes fear) Not too mention that their shite spell proficiency,I struggle to see a time where I won't have two heal spells prepped A BH but himself can, in two rounds and one spell slot. Provide +1 status to hit, -2 circumstance to AC, and -1 status effect to everything (intimidating strike) This is doable by level 4. And if your worried about movement take zealous rush at 8 so you can move 10+ feet wet things like self heals, shield, guidance, haste, heroism, etc.
There's a lot of neat ideas here, I've always been curious about using cards as an RPG mechanic, and the "fate-bound" bit about checks kinda reflects my feelings about using skill checks in other games.
I really love hearing about other systems, and this one in particular seems like a really cool take on old-school dungeon crawling. A tarot deck as a randomizer is such a neat idea! Combat seems weird, but that's a feature, not a bug imho.
i feel like most players/gamers overall have a believably/understandably faulty intuition when it comes to randomness; we're full of gambler's fallacies/biases/etc. believing in hot streaks/unlucky players when randomness in reality doesn't work like that, which is what dice emulate, and so our faulty intuitions get fooled often by dice, which is why im always so interested in cards/deck-based conflict determination systems in ttrpgs because of how decks actually pander to our faulty intuitions and have such a tactile way to guess at future outcomes without making things full-on predictions. (i also play an extensive amount of roguelike deckbuilders so i prolly have a bias there to decks over dice inherently) his majesty the worm has the most interesting innovative systems all throughout. i love when an osr book i buy isn't purely good campaign content/random tables built on top of reused jankily balanced systems (even tho i understand osr being about rulings over rules has a lower focus on balance than modern ttrpgs), and instead it's the good campaign content of osr built on top of the excellent balance design and innovative attempts at brand-new overhaul systems more common among modern ttrpgs

You know I have just seeked someone that shows me this special Archetype, but i love the details in the Pf2e system and i really appreciate your constructive and analytic way to work through it. So I decide to stick with you :) good work.
