    What's the info about taking the animist as a dedication? I don't really see people talking about it like they are the Exemplar

    • @lexchxn
      @lexchxn  2 місяці тому +16

      Sure! I'll outline it here and leave your comment pinned:
      The dedication requires a +2 in Wisdom, lets you select a single apparition which you stay permanently bound to unless you spend a day of downtime switching to another, your apparition only gives you their lore skills (though they do scale at 8 and 16 as normal), and you gain Divine prepared casting as usual for a dedication (two cantrips).
      Its Basic, Expert, and Master spellcasting feats function as usual for Divine spellcasting, except you can also prepare your apparition's spells in your spell slots. Its "Breadth" feat only allows you to prepare your apparition's spells in the additional slots.
      Then it has the standard level 4 "Gain a 1st- or 2nd-level animist feat." feat and repeatable level 6 "Gain an animist feat of half your level or lower.", though you can never take feats with the Wandering trait.
      And that's everything the dedication has to offer. There is no way to gain access to the vessel spells, gain more apparitions, or make it easier to switch out your apparitions.

    I believe the reason why the Medium’s flavor text is so confusing is that they copied and pasted the wrong description from the playtest. In the playtest, there were only 2 subclasses, Medium and Channeler, and Channeler has basically been turned into Liturgist. They must have accidentally grabbed the Channeler’s flavor text instead of Medium’s when they ported both of them over and rewrote Channeler into Liturgist

    My DM just delayed our campaign to allow us to use the new content for the new books. And after this video, i'm absolutely playing animist now. I'm pretty hyped. Love the channel keep up the good work! :D

    Thanks for the detailed overview! I really appreciate the emphasis on diverse lore skills and love the potential roleplay / story implications of the apparitions' influence.

      It's what excites me the most, so I had to! The spellcasting is nice, and very different from anything we've had before, but I've never had a ton to talk about with spells- they're highly personal and situational. Roleplay concepts and unique mechanics though? Hohoho-

    Great video! I've realised I hadn't really given Animist the thought it deserved. After watching this, it seems really cool!

    There was the "Advanced Interlocution" a 10th-level class feature in a playtest that explained second apparition spell slots, so I assume it should be still there in the released book at the same level but maybe with a new name? But I wouldn't be surprised If Paizo made a big oopsie and deleted it completely from this print.

    • @lexchxn
      @lexchxn  2 місяці тому +3

      Yeah, the feature is entirely missing. Thanks for the context though! Knowing something *was* there makes it feel less lacking, though I still wish there was a feature to explain it.

      @Baarogue 2 місяці тому

      Yeah I came here to make this exact same comment. The feature's text was "You channel the power of spiritual forces and entities with incredible efficiency. You gain an additional apparition slot for each rank of spells you can cast, up to your highest rank of spells -2. For example, a 10th level animist would have an additional 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-rank apparition slot."

    We've had an Animist using the playtest for a long time in our campaign. Will be sending her this for sure. Thanks for your work.

    Animist wasn't really on my radar before, but it definitely is now! It sounds like it comes from the same DNA as the old 3.x Binder class, which was one of my favorite bits of content from that edition. Paizo continues knocking it out of the park when it comes to using their mechanics in creative ways.

    I am half disappointed by the subclasses. Liturgist and Medium are great, they build off your class kit. Seer and Shaman should be feats. There is no reason for them to be a separate subclass other than to pad the list. Shaman should have apparitions interacting with what the spirit familiar can do. Seer should be interacting with your apparition lore skills.

      @lexchxn  2 місяці тому +11

      These are understandable concerns. I, personally, was only really let down in that regard by the fact that most of the subclasses don't get anything unique until level 9; all of their level 1 features except for Seer's are the same as just taking a feat (or two in the case of Shaman). I'm always a lot more excited when a subclass is immediately mechanically unique.

    Really interesting class

    Not sure if the name changed in the book, but at level 10 you get the class feature "Advanced Interlocution". This gives you an extra apparition spell slot up to your highest rank of spells -2. It is kind of annoying that it doesn't come online until level 10.

      This feature is not in the book, actually. That's what confuses me about it.

    Did you plug all of this into foundry yourself? That's impressive

  • @Cursedsama

    Kind of a bummer that they dropped from 2 to 1 focus point at level one. I guess it was pretty strong to be able to potentially use both your apparition spells in one combat
    Edit: Nvm they get something similar anyway!

    After watching the video, i have to say I am sorry but the animist is the epitome of bloated.
    Is it flavorful to a degree being able to freely choose between all these apparitions? I guess so. But its oddly restrictive and more importantly it is a nightmare to keep track of, of all this stuff.
    - Just let the animist choose a focus spell per apparition for flavor. Thats more then enough. (and even here i easily could cut bloat)
    - Just use standard prepared casting with normal spell slots except for one spell per rank you can choose to use like a signature spell (freely heighten).
    - Instead of the "lore" skills, you get something that works similar to bardic lore (apparition lore?).
    There, i freed up at least two pages and made the animist A LOT more approachable without taking out much or adding much power.
