@sayunaraleo8177 luckily Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, and pick pocketing is extremely rare here. People leave their phone on the cafe table when they go to the bathroom to save their seat and nobody steals it. However, I would still exercise precautions and keep your valuables on you!

@DanLee8884 that's great to hear, and visiting the temples in Korea is really amazing because a lot of them are in really nice locations where you can go on a little walk through the forest (just avoid the ones on top of mountains! haha). Also that must have been a really cool experience in the cafe in Japan! Can't imagine how it must have felt to play guitar and sing in front of a bunch of strangers in a cafe! Haha. We've made videos where we picked a random subway station in the Greater Seoul Area exploring around which included some abandoned places, but it would be cool to do more "raw" style exploration videos as well just exploring the streets without much editing. I stumble around my words so much when we film (hence the reliance on tons of voiceovers), so I'm not sure how exciting it will be though! 🤣 Btw I'll check out his videos as it's cool to go back in time like that!

@@lostthenfound It's how I remember Korea, back in 09 when smart phones weren't really a thing, having to use some god awful flip phone. I remember heading around Itaewon too, some interesting people around.

@Protonoto1 this is great! Captured the Korean bar atmosphere perfectly too just meeting and talking to so many new people. Were you guys working on a film shoot together or something? I knew some people that did extra work (background acting) here in Korea when I first got here and I think a lot of them made enough to get by.

@@lostthenfound Some of those people were actors but many people just did all sorts of stuff, some teaching English, another guy is a professor. I was just visiting for 2 weeks at that time, and Michael invited me to come to this meetup, so it was nice to meet up him and everyone else at the time, as it was his youtube vids which really made me want to visit Korea in the first place.

@ICDeadPeeps haha I know right! We looked up housing prices and some of the older places were about 50 million KRW and we were thinking...that just might be do-able someday. It's a nice area!

Also Korea has some of the most precious and special temples I've ever seen. They are so powerful, and we are so fortunate and lucky to be able to visit these places. Also that's so awesome that you have photos of your Grandma visiting Tongdosa and Bulguksa! Also totally agree that Korea is quite respectful when it comes to tolerating its different religions/non-religions. It's always interesting especially during holidays or things like funerals to see different families using different customs, and they don't force each other to do things that go against their ways. Many temples, including Tongdosa, have well-established "templestay" programs where you can sample some of the monastic life and schedule. I don't want to come across as a missionary, so I'll emphasize that these programs are absolutely for everybody whose interest in temples may be cultural, historical, or some other POV not necessarily religious. Worth a google if you're curious, quite a bit of English resources out there thankfully!

Thanks so much for sharing this @jkang7265! As someone who is not religious personally, I have never felt more welcome and respected than when visiting Buddhist Temples. They are beautiful and powerful places, and I would love to try a temple stay program someday as well!

Tip: there are some very small temples on mountain sides, close to cities or a hike away from them that are very authentic. You may stumble upon them by accident. For example a temple in a cave, just rock, hardly visible, but very elaborate inside with gold, candles, paintings and statues. We didn’t go in because a man was praying there for a long time and we didn’t want to disturb him.

We also really loved looking at the older more traditional style buildings, and Tongdosa had such an amazing atmosphere that I think everyone can enjoy. The temple near Songnisan (속리산) called Beobjusa (법주사) also has a really old looking pagoda that's interesting if you ever end up around there. Must be getting excited to head over here.
