Hi there! We are Yujin and Matt, a Korean Canadian couple that makes videos about Korea, travel, cycling, and skiing.
How Have We Never Heard of This Amazing Place in Korea? 🇰🇷 The Best Temple We've Ever Seen
#koreatravel #gyeongju #korea
Hello everyone! Last year we made a lot of random subway adventure videos around the Greater Seoul Area where we spun a roulette and went to whichever subway station it landed on, and now that we live in a van, we can apply the same method for the entire country, so in this video we let luck bring us to our next destination of Ulju-gun (울주군). Here you can find the Yeongnam Alps (영남알프스) which include Gajisan Mountain (가지산) and Sinbulsan Mountain (신불산). Here we explored a beautiful temple called Seongnamsa (석남사), Paraesopokpo Waterfall (파래소폭포), and then drove down to Yangsan City (양산시) where we got to explore one of Korea’s Three Jewels Temples called Tongdosa (통도사) which was filled with Buddhist monks praying and chanting, and the most powerful Buddhist temple experience we had ever felt. To end the adventure, we then went to Eonyang-eub (언양읍) and tried their famous Bulgogi (불고기), before finishing off by looking around the city and checking out the Eonyangeub-seong Fortress (언양읍성) to wrap off an amazing random adventure! Enjoy!

Got our visa today! Multiple entry for 5 years!! We will go there this coming Dec 14-19 2024. (It’s my second time to visit Korea)❤ Thank you for your recommendations/suggestions, very helpful. 😊
@irenedy5061 woohoo that's great congratulations! Hope you have a wonderful trip to Korea!
Hey guys, I hope you’re both ok and have found somewhere to stay safe in the snow ❄️
@8IGHT-X hi there thank you for the nice message and concern! We have been in Busan during the snowfall which has still been very mild and nice luckily. Stay warm and safe out there! 😊
I’m headed there and this is helpful!
@tmn8547 thank you very much! Glad to help out a bit, and hope you have an amazing trip to Seoul!
Respect! From a fellow biker from Korea. ^^
@ihnkim thank you very much! Korea has some of the most beautiful bike paths I've ever ridden! Can't wait to keep exploring, and see you out there on the road someday! 😁
Hello, someone who has been in Seoul South Korea can tell me if there are Pick Pocket igual has everywhere, in Europe, metro, buses, etc? Thanks 🙏
@sayunaraleo8177 luckily Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, and pick pocketing is extremely rare here. People leave their phone on the cafe table when they go to the bathroom to save their seat and nobody steals it. However, I would still exercise precautions and keep your valuables on you!
superb!
@sanjibchowdhury6804 thank you so much! Really appreciate it!
ooo expansion to the random location game! awesome idea! so great you have the freedom to essentially travel most of the whole country! while not religeous myself i definitely enjoyed visiting the few temples i did in Korea and this was a great one! keep up the awesome work guys
@BasicStealthcamping thanks so much for all of your kind words and support! Very fortunate to see a lot of these places, and I totally agree as a non-religious person that the temples are some of the most interesting parts of Korea. Especially how respectful they are without trying to push you to join their religion. All the best and take care eh!
I live in Ulju-gun! Welcome welcome! Love the vid guys!
Oh buy the way - the lady at restaurant 7 at 4:02 is an absolute legend -- so kind. Just in case you go back again in the future :)
@dapsimni9098 thank you so much! You live in a beautiful place! Can't wait to go back next time! 😊
Interesting to get your impressions and experiences living in Korea. I went there for a holiday recently, and it kind of reminded me of a more gritty version of Japan. My partner and i are always weighing up different options to relocate and seeking new opportunities, but to be perfectly honest, when i did a bit of digging into various costs such as food, housing, taxes and also average incomes it really didn't stack up for us. But like you said, it's definitely not for everyone and you need to see it and experience for yourself before making a real commitment. I wish you and your family well on your journey through life. 😊
@jasg3786 thanks for watching and for the nice words! Like you said, it's definitely very hard to have a nice work/life balance here, as there are usually expectations on working long hours without many holidays. Did you end up finding a place that you would like to relocate to? All the best and take care!
You call that over tourism? Try going anywhere on the weekends in Sydney :P
@skesby haha a lot of people heading over to Sydney these days?
@@lostthenfound Just a normal thing unfortunately :\
@skesby ah yeah sounds similar to Vancouver in Canada where I used to live. Hope to rent a car and go for a nice roadtrip in Australia someday as it looks beautiful!
ty for sharing
@MajorAddiction thanks a lot for watching!
I've been to that rest stop. Food wasn't great when I was there, and a lot of the stuff in there was tied to a gaudy Christian wealth doctrine stuff. Not a huge fan of the spot, but it was nice to see something familiar.
@Benjaminmbaker haha thanks a lot for sharing! When we walked inside we were both like "Wtf where are we right now?" As it had one of those mountain cafeteria vibes that must get a lot of older tour buses. The donkasseu was good luckily.
Great! Just planning a trip for 2025, this is just what we need!! Thanks. LP from UK
@VLesPaul thanks so much for watching, and really glad we could help out a bit! All the best with your Korea trip in 2025!
Thanks - this is so helpful - An old guy (75) - I'm just now planning for a leisurely 9-10 day ride (Incheon to Busan) on my Brompton in Spring 2025!
@basho66 thanks a lot for checking it out! Wow you are amazing to be doing these cycling trips like that still! 9-10 days should be perfect for an average of about 70km/day. Hope you have an amazing trip, and feel free to ask any questions that you have on here if you have any! Take care eh!
Because I grew up conservative Christian, my parents never took me to temples in Korea. When my wife I visit Japan, we always go to a temple. I am now a pastor but every relgion interests me. When I visit Korea again, I will definitely make an effort to visit some temples. The only thing is I am not thst into hikes although I grew up taking hikes up to the mountain to get mountain water. That group of guitarist was so wholesome. It reminded me of when we were in Japan, a cafe had live music and at one point everyone were singing together. They invited my wife and I to play guitar and sing and we did. One of the best travel experiences I have ever had.
@DanLee8884 that's great to hear, and visiting the temples in Korea is really amazing because a lot of them are in really nice locations where you can go on a little walk through the forest (just avoid the ones on top of mountains! haha). Also that must have been a really cool experience in the cafe in Japan! Can't imagine how it must have felt to play guitar and sing in front of a bunch of strangers in a cafe! Haha. Thanks a lot for sharing, and take care!
any hostel on line 2. you can get to anywhere
@wyliem this is my style as well. I think it's a great tip for people especially on a budget!
Get out of my country.
release the spinner wheel tutorial lol
@catnapMitsu hahaha the app is called Decision Roulette if you wanna mess around with it. Experience the thrill!!
I've been living in Korea for ages and I haven't been to most of these places gonna check em out. Really like the positivity in these videos.
@alexanderwatts-barnett1945 thanks so much for the kind words and for watching! Hope you can check them out, especially the 문래동 industrial area is really neat if you're into that sort of thing!
Nice video. I know this is probably old hat, or maybe you have some older vids I've not seen, but have you guys ever done any urban exploration? Maybe abandoned places. I used to watch MikeInKorea (Michael Arnold) back in the mid to late 00s before visiting Korea, he had some fascinating videos, even just riding around on the subway.
@Protonoto1 thanks so much! We've made videos where we picked a random subway station in the Greater Seoul Area exploring around which included some abandoned places, but it would be cool to do more "raw" style exploration videos as well just exploring the streets without much editing. I stumble around my words so much when we film (hence the reliance on tons of voiceovers), so I'm not sure how exciting it will be though! 🤣 Btw I'll check out his videos as it's cool to go back in time like that!
@@lostthenfound It's how I remember Korea, back in 09 when smart phones weren't really a thing, having to use some god awful flip phone. I remember heading around Itaewon too, some interesting people around.
@@lostthenfound It seems like his original youtube was deleted due to a copyright claim, but he reuploaded stuff on michaelarnold13, well worth looking back. I'm in one of his videos from years back ua-cam.com/video/K-J51u_Dzvg/v-deo.htmlsi=e3EGFxTlkgIElL8D this was in gangnam at a bar that no longer exists, I think it was called the beer master or something along those lines.
@Protonoto1 this is great! Captured the Korean bar atmosphere perfectly too just meeting and talking to so many new people. Were you guys working on a film shoot together or something? I knew some people that did extra work (background acting) here in Korea when I first got here and I think a lot of them made enough to get by.
@@lostthenfound Some of those people were actors but many people just did all sorts of stuff, some teaching English, another guy is a professor. I was just visiting for 2 weeks at that time, and Michael invited me to come to this meetup, so it was nice to meet up him and everyone else at the time, as it was his youtube vids which really made me want to visit Korea in the first place.
Thank you for your open hearts and open minds. When we become the very peace we want in life, then it is ours; a true gift we can share. Thank you.🌷
@donnahollman4259 thanks so much for everything you have taught us and all of your support Mom! ❤️ We're very fortunate to be able to visit these special places and can't wait to show you them next time!
These videos have become part of my Sunday evening routine as I wind down the weekend! Makes me want to get back to Korea stat!!
@cheech8158 so glad to hear that, thanks a lot for watching our videos and sharing that! Also hope you can make it back to Korea soon!
If ever you'll have the chance to visit the central and Eastern Ulsan, it's really recommended to visit the Amethyst Cavern Park in Eonyang-eup and the Jangseongpo Whale Museum in Nam-gu which I visited two days ago. ^_^
@MatthewMabborang thanks so much for sharing! Saved those in our list of places to see for the future. All the best eh!
@lostthenfound you’re very much welcome Matt and Yujin! That’s the reason why we love exploring hidden gems! We’ll never know it does exist even if the way to go there is difficult by car or in my case, by bikepacking! 💙
Right before you said y'all could see yourself buying a place there...I had the same exact thought :)
@ICDeadPeeps haha I know right! We looked up housing prices and some of the older places were about 50 million KRW and we were thinking...that just might be do-able someday. It's a nice area!
oh my gosh this is the kind of gem I love to find when traveling. Looks like such a heavenly spot.
@Rachel-sv9pq we got very spoiled with this random trip indeed! It's a very beautiful area that I strongly recommend visiting if you get the chance to. Especially in the fall time!
Thanks for this great video. I just got back from South Korea 2 weeks ago (my 2nd trip in a year) and went to Gyeongju to see all the historic sites. I wanted to get to the last two temples but as you say, transportation is not easy without a car. I went to see the fall colours but they had barely started when I left, so your walks up the beautiful valleys filled in what I missed. Thanks
@RosmarySpencer thanks so much for watching and for the nice words! Glad you got to see Gyeongju and the historical sites, and you're right that transportation would be really difficult to get up to Seongnamsa or Tongdosa. Glad we could share a bit of what they look like though! All the best and take care eh!
Another great video Yujin and Matt…so much history in Ulsan…my limited knowledge of history- the hills of Ulsan deterred foreign invaders…경주 - is that the origination of Kim clan??? We are part of the Kim clan…albeit from the 노비 side from what my sister tells me…took the name of the master…so much history…a ‘living’ temple…wow…profound…
@classickdramaclips thanks so much for watching and for all your support! Ah that's interesting to hear about Ulsan's history, and you're right I think that 경주 is one of the origins of the Kim Clan. I think there are a few other places with Kim Clans too. Hahah 노비 side too eh! Your ancestors must have worked hard to get your family to where it is today! That's so cool how Koreans can trace their history back like that though. Would be super interesting to learn about!
Another amazing life on wheels vlog😊 the temples are absolutely beautiful , this is definitely on my list of must visit places when I’m there 😍 panoramic view is definitely the best description 😊 the waterfalls was beautiful. I agree with you that fall is the best time and season to visit hence that’s my projected time for my vacation there😊 Thanks for sharing this amazing vlog and not to mention your world class narration educating us. Sending lots of love to you and your beautiful wife from NYC 🗽🇺🇸 to beautiful South Korea 🇰🇷🥰💜
@deidravargas2664 thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! Strongly recommend checking out this area (especially Tongdosa) when you come to visit Korea! Really glad you will make it in the fall time as well! This year it was especially hot in September, so it might be a good idea to wait until October if it's possible, but if it's not then you will still have a great time regardless. Thanks again for all the great vibes, and all the best in beautiful NYC! 🗽🇺🇸
that is a beautiful temple and mountains. thanks for sharing.
@woolfel it's a very beautiful and special place for sure! Thanks a lot for watching!
Thank you for sharing beautiful countryside. I want to go to South korea so much but it is hard to save the money for such a big trip and I want to stay a month a least for that money. It will be the trip of my life one day
@cosmos663 thanks so much for watching! Also hope that you are able to make your dream come true coming over here to visit someday! Coming here for a month is a great idea as you will have enough time to see Seoul and also look around the country to get a good feel for it. Definitely recommend learning some phrases like greetings and ordering from restaurants to make the experience even better! All the best, and take care eh!
Happy relationship anniversary! So glad to see a return of the random spinner, it's how I discovered your channel in the Seoul Metro series, and such a great concept. As a noted temple and hillwalking enthusiast, this was especially great to watch. I mean you're doing something right if you run into a random gang of classical guitarists, haha. Great to hear a description of the big three Korean temples including Tongdosa which I have also had the good fortune to visit. It's hard to communicate the privilege it is for believers such as myself (full disclosure) to be near relics believed to be from the historical Buddha, and I'm really grateful you guys present that setting with such sensitivity. Slight tangent-- I love the fact that I have pictures of my devoted Presbyterian halmoni (grandma) enthusiastically visiting Tongdosa and Bulguksa-- for a lot of Koreans (in my experience) the diversity of Korean religion and non-religion throughout history is a strength. I hope that tolerance can continue and strengthen for a long time. Whoops, wrote a novel. Great video as always! Take care
@jkang7265 thank you very much for all of your support! Really glad that Ulju-gun was up your alley, as it is such a beautiful area, and I can't believe nobody ever told me about it before haha. Also Korea has some of the most precious and special temples I've ever seen. They are so powerful, and we are so fortunate and lucky to be able to visit these places. Also that's so awesome that you have photos of your Grandma visiting Tongdosa and Bulguksa! Also totally agree that Korea is quite respectful when it comes to tolerating its different religions/non-religions. It's always interesting especially during holidays or things like funerals to see different families using different customs, and they don't force each other to do things that go against their ways. A lot of beauty in that which a lot of the world could learn from. Thanks a lot for sharing, and have a great day!
Awesome video. Love learning about new places in Korea.
@FreedomBaby thanks so much! Korea is quite small in size, but in terms of places to discover and explore it's truly endless!
💟👀👌
Thanks!
@dericmpark8381 thanks so much for all of your support! You are so generous, and have supported us so much. Hope all is well, and you have an amazing week!
The temples look like great places to visit and have a great experience.
Many temples, including Tongdosa, have well-established "templestay" programs where you can sample some of the monastic life and schedule. I don't want to come across as a missionary, so I'll emphasize that these programs are absolutely for everybody whose interest in temples may be cultural, historical, or some other POV not necessarily religious. Worth a google if you're curious, quite a bit of English resources out there thankfully!
@JCF-eh7rx they are absolutely amazing! Hope you can check them out someday!
Thanks so much for sharing this @jkang7265! As someone who is not religious personally, I have never felt more welcome and respected than when visiting Buddhist Temples. They are beautiful and powerful places, and I would love to try a temple stay program someday as well!
Your most beautiful video to date. Such serene land and temples.
@Mudskipper9876 thanks so much! We were blown away with this area, as Ulsan is generally seen as an "industrial city," and had no idea there was so much beauty nearby. Can't wait to see more in the future. Hope you have a great week!
good to see the Hyundai still going strong 😊🎉
@willmc6728 haha it's been great luckily! About 6,000 km on it without any problems (we had some problems at the start though).
석남사는 비구니 사찰입니다
It's wonderful that Korea has a strong bhiksuni tradition
@연연이-p3j님 아, 그렇군요! 몰랐는데 석남사는 진짜 아름답고 평화로워요. 알려주셔서 감사합니다! 즐거운 하루 되세요~
Such beautiful temples! 😱
@DylanBekker they are pretty unreal eh! Was really surprised showing up to both of them how nice they are with the surrounding beautiful scenery. Hope you can check them out someday too!
@@lostthenfound Logged them onto my Google maps for a future trip!
It is nice beautiful vlog, I love to visit temple and I hope you could share me, the name of the temple. Thank you
@fernandoverzosa7100 thank you so much! The two temples in the video are called Seongnamsa Temple (석남사) and Tongdosa Temple (통도사). They are both beautiful in their own ways, so definitely check them out someday if you can't!
Another amazing random video
@jeffreylim5977 thank you very much! Really appreciate it!
Amazing episode, guys! The temples, mountains, and area in general was stunning. This is definitely a place I would love to visit one day. Thank you for sharing it with us. 😊 Take care and have a wonderful week! 🍁🇰🇷🍂
@misscaroline542 thank you so much! It's such a cool area to visit with all of the nice mountains and hidden places spread within them. Really recommend it if you get the chance to someday! Hope you have a great week, and thank you so much for all of your support!
Thanks for the video. Great to see you out there enjoying nature. Regards
@howardlee7189 thanks so much Howard! Really been enjoying a lot of the Korean countryside recently and been very fortunate to be able to do so. Hope all is well, and have an amazing week eh!
Thanks for this beautiful trip , for your positive and peaceful energy and for all explanations! I put Tongdosa Temple on my list 😁
@TheLilymarley thanks a lot for watching and for the nice comment! Tongdosa was such an awesome temple to visit. Hope you can check it out someday!
not everyone on the internet likes to see religious stuff but even as a christian i admire how you dont shy away from showing such interesting sites as these buddhist temples, id never seen such historical korean architecture that hadnt yet been fully renovated and repainted, as only the redone stuff gets photographed usually. but seeing those "rundown" older buildings was quite beautiful in its own way. Id love to see more of what other religions have done around korea in their architecture and such. another great video though, counting down the days to my trip in april!
Tip: there are some very small temples on mountain sides, close to cities or a hike away from them that are very authentic. You may stumble upon them by accident. For example a temple in a cave, just rock, hardly visible, but very elaborate inside with gold, candles, paintings and statues. We didn’t go in because a man was praying there for a long time and we didn’t want to disturb him.
@mach1neg thanks a lot for watching and for the kind words! We also really loved looking at the older more traditional style buildings, and Tongdosa had such an amazing atmosphere that I think everyone can enjoy. The temple near Songnisan (속리산) called Beobjusa (법주사) also has a really old looking pagoda that's interesting if you ever end up around there. Must be getting excited to head over here. All the best with planning and hope you have an amazing trip!
@_filifjonkan4290 this is an amazing tip! There are temples everywhere, and a lot of the random ones are the most beautiful!
Beautiful temples. I also like to visit temples on my bike adventure and I try ti be respectful since it's a place of worship. Another great find guys!
@bikechingu the temples are really nice over there! Also the temples are one of the most interesting parts of exploring Korea I think. Stay warm and take care eh!
First
i've been planning to take a trip to japan, and osaka was gonna be my first place to visit. Seeing your video was definitely a game changer for my ittennary, also i like the way you embrace the local place that would be help the local economy. Keep the good work 👍🏽
@natasyafortunita4982 thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! Much appreciated! Osaka is such a cool city to visit as well. Hope you have a great trip!
I love Goseong. I go there several times per month in June-Oct. my favourite beaches to swim at are there.
@sandymaceachern1968 it's a really quiet and nice area to go for the beaches! That's awesome you go there!
