Castle Hives
United States
Приєднався 7 жов 2011
Welcome to Castle Hives, my name is Brian. Castle Hives started in April 2017 on Earth Day and it has been a journey. We have had Ups & Downs, but have learned so much about the wonderful Honey Bees.
I am just a back yard Beekeeping and share everything. You will see when I expand the Apiary and even when I lose a colony. Being a Backyard Beekeeper gives me time to really step back at times and share special moments with the Bees. I hope you enjoy following along as I share my Beekeeping experience.
In recent years, I have started working towards my Master Beekeeper through the University of Florida. Currently, I have passed the Advanced level and will start working towards my Master Beekeeper rank starting in April 2024.

Hey all,
On a November day, the 5th to be exact, I decided to take advantage of a very warm day in NEO Ohio and get some work done with the colonies. The VarroxSan strips have been in close to 40 days, so I decided to remove them and do a few Mite washes. Boy was I surprised by the results of my washes and also the brood that I found.
Let me know your thoughts.

Please make available a like to Randy's deformed wing virus C study as I do have chemical free (soft and hard) with a USDA chemical test of my 2024 honey to reinforce that claim. I have seen some DWV in previous years but observed none this year. I would like to aid in his efforts.
Great chat Guys, getting cooler down here but bees are ready and plan to put some more feed on next week. Have a great weekend yall :)
Thanks, you too! Appreciate you watching Grayson.
😂that’s not cold weather 😅
Its not 70 out. lol. . We'll get cold in Jan/Feb. We typicality get some below 0 temps then. I do like this cold spell though, keeps the Bees tight and not moving.
I have my set up I have bubble wrap on then I put my shim that I put my fondant pack on that so I can open my tops all winter without losing heat
Very similar to what I do.
Hi Brian. How are your Castle Hives holding up long term?
@birdman6715 they definitely age. Being wax coated vs dipped, you can see the difference. They're still in use though, so can't complain I guess.
Like candy to a kid. They will eat it before the reserves. I don’t mind them eating it first to promote better gut health over the long winter here in Michigan. I have seen the fondant cleanup a dysentery issue over the winter I have a hack video up on how to allow for better access to the product Keep up the good work!
Do the washes kill the bees ? 😢
@@mathxsilentgameplay they do.
@@CastleHives i guess it is for a good cause but still a bit sad 😥
@@mathxsilentgameplay It is, but think of it as a diagnostic method. If we were to ask a colony, they would not hesitate. Daily there are hundreds if not more that die. They live around 6 weeks in the summer, working from the moment they emerge from a cell to when they finally perish.
Beautiful sharing my friend interesting
Thank you very much!
Any concern about mixong chemicals with Varoxsan & thymol tabs? I had heard that you need to have a break between OAE & apiguard.
@@NancyLawson-i8x I asked about that and was told there are no issues. I don't normally like mixing products.
Your colonies look great
Thank you. It has been work this year.
Thanks for the shout out, Brian! Your bees are looking good!
Not a problem. . Happy to shout out your products. Thanks for watching Mike.
Thanks Brian. I am going to have to get some of those strips
They kept the number where they were. I had a high wash this year of 2, so if they kept them right where they were, thats a win for me.
You did not say what the mite counts were before VarroxSan treatment. If you did not do the pretreatment counts, then how do you know that VarroxSan worked? You might have had low counts before treatment.
My highest count through the year was 2, so it kept them steady.
With little or no mite pressure you don't learn much. Need to leave 1 or 2 hives without strips to see if they are actually doing anything.
I've gone that route years back, they didnt make the Winter.
do you find it beneficial to do washes this late in the year when those bees are important winter cluster bees ?
With as much brood as I saw, I don't think it hurt much.
I think smaller Winter real-estate for them was the right choice Brian. I think it'll allow them the ability to manage those Winter nest better, we just have to keep and eye on Winter food consumption.👍Blessed Days buddy...
I think so too! If they survive, win win. . Fingers crossed. Thanks DC.
👋Morning Brian😁 I love me some🥰OA😍Over😍Time.👍They help my bees wash low. I am thinking the 2 styles as over time, plus a OA vape for good knock down might be a game changer. Nice looking bees Brian, they are going to have a nice Winter nest.😁I'm liking organics compared to synthetics personally. Thanks for sharing Brian, Blessed Days buddy...
Looking at the brood right now, I cant imagine that they'd not make it through, but who knows. I'm leaning towards eliminating synthetics. Thanks DC.
I hammer mites. Mine get bayvarol strips at the end of winter, then hit them with oxalic. I use wet-ex glycerine oxalic sponges on my hives and I start it mid way through my first OA vapour treatment. This year I spliced a treatment with apiguard tubs of thymol gel as well just as a experiment especially for chalkbrood and it really cleaned the chalkbrood up fast😂 so I'll be adding that in as well. I follow up with monthly washes and more OA vapour treatment if I see the counts go above two. I really hate varroa mites 😂
Sounds like you have a great IPM set up. Appreciate you watching.
Bro the stuff you bought and things you used your bees are gonna make it
I hope so. . They're looking good right now, so can't imagine they'd not make Winter. Thanks for watching Aaron.
If you can keep up with it OA vap is the best way I have never seen anyone year just use vapour all year and see what happens you can control them with just OA if I say if you keep up On it
Agreed. I like OA. Having this VarroxSan strip now helps save time, at least it did for me.
@ so get this you Gus can get a instavap for 350 they want 750 up here in Canada
So you were running Api Tablets and VarroxSan? Brian our bees here are bringing is pollen of all colors and still brooding up. From where we do not know. Never seen that before. Nutty!
I put the tabs in yeah. Not sure what effect that had, but we'll see. I spoke with Todd and he had Extended Release OA and the Tabs, and said it worked really well.
Great update Brian 👌🐝🐝
Thanks Sebastian.
Looks like they take chew the comb pretty much down to the foundation where the strips are.
They did. That would be a problem that's for sure. We'll see how they manage it.
Good video with alot of different things you have in hives. What ever works . Congratulations
Thanks 👍
Problem with feeding sucrose stimulates brooding.. with no pollen coming in they use the fat in their body's to produce brood .. those bees we see in the snow don't have fat in them why they dwindle.. don't feed them they shut down and that preserves the youth of the best . I normally wait until February and spark them up with feed get them brooding.. drop in the apivar maybe pollen sub depending on weather is warm enough they get flight
There is so much pollen in the hives, i'm not worried. I have some frames, in each, that are 75% pollen. There were some folks getting pollen bound this year. Wish I could feed syrup in February, that is a cold one for us. Appreciate you watching. .
great video!! thanks for taking the time to take us on your journey of Varrox/San
Thanks Stan
Great job Brian
Thanks Ray.
Nov 5th day God reminds us he loves us
Truth. .
Hi Brian Thanks for sharing your results. I always appreciate your videos.
My pleasure. I enjoy sharing my journey.
Awesome job!! Thanks!
Thanks Mr 321. .
Thanks for the update Brian. From what I have heard the strips kinda keep the mites at bay. I may do a trial next July after I pull honey here in Northwest Florida.
What I've heard is that the strips are more of a maintenance suppression once you have your high mite counts down already.
Good job Brian!
Looks great! Thanks for a post treatment video. Do you happen to have varro counts before the strips?
@HoneypatchRanch it was below 60, so did not wash them. Before that, about a month or so, the highest was 2. So it kept them steady.
Nice built but totally useless; It's manual came with no "real" set-up instructions and adjustments.. Do not buy, save your money and buy a real weather station...
Mine came with everything I needed to get it up and running. To this date, I have had no issues with it.
How’s this holding up nowadays? Looking into getting our first hive
@@roeboy8212 It's fine, no issues.
We’re picking Randy up at the airport for Colorado’s fall meeting today. Great interview, Brian!
@@flowerstreetfarmbees Oh, that is awesome. Enjoy.
I may have to try this shake out method on a queenlees hive I have. There are still 2 capped queen cells so I am going to wait a little while and see what happens. Here in Northwest Florida I still have some drones and good weather. Hopefully a new queen will get mated.
Oh yeah, i'd wait also. Up here we are about done.
Awesome set up. Looking at doing the same.
@@ColesFarmNC huge time saver.
@@CastleHives Thought of a question. What size hose does it use? Trying to preplan a connection setup from a bottling tank (1.5” honey -> tri clamp -> ? size fitting -> pump hose).
I've been printing this for a while now, I'm using PETG, almost complete, 5 more frames and the lid to go.
@@SimonPlatten awesome. . While I didn't get bees in mine this season, I do have it outside to show how it survives an Ohoo winter.
@@CastleHives Hoping to get it finished in the next couple of months, then will try to populate it...next printer is the Creality K1 MAX.
@@SimonPlatten good luck.
Sorry for your Loss. I took an observation hive to a market this past weekend. The kids love it and I was surprised how many adults were interested. I had the bees out of the hive for about 24 hours. I didn't see any issue.
Two questions Brian, are you allowed to feed while you use the Voroxxan? Also by shaking those bees out do you think if a couple thousand went into one hive would they bother the queen that was in that hive(kill her)?
They actually encourage you to feed as it helps distribute the VarroxSan. The colony i shook out, not worried.
So is that strip mimicking a oa sponge like Randy Oliver’s?
It's an extended release. Not sure of rhe exact ingredients for Randy's.
Hi from southern New Zealand 👋 😃 had to miss your live chat because I had splits to check, spring has sprung 😂 the thyme is at the purple top stage which means its a week until blossom opening and the purple honey carpet comes out in central Otago 😁love that hive alive syrup, i saw the same results on a Jerome bee farm video, they suck it down quickly, very impressive. I think it would be handy if you came across a light colony you wanted to get emergency weight into fast, im always impressed with hive alive products and use thier fondant for late winter boosting even though my colony's are stocked up with stores because im certain it helps brood start up and sets a good population foundation. Love those straps, im thinking about converting. I brought new metal emlock straps and they suck😂 the old school ones are great but the two new ones i picked up the other day at farmlands are terrible bloody things, gonna ditch them and get tiedown straps
Don’t ever by that hive alive again that’s to pricey u can get a 20kg bag of sugar for 35 Buxs you prob cheaper
I love my Hive Alive products. And, sugar down here is more expensive. Its close to $1 a pound.
I like using those harbor freight straps. They paid for themselves when I had 70 mph winds during one storm. Cheap insurance.
Exactly. We've had a few storms that come through and I don't worry. The added 5 minutes time is nothing when compared to cleaning up hives that were knocked over cause of wind.
Looks good Brian. What is the moisture content of the syrup? Is it two to one or thinner than that?
To me, it looks like 2 or 2.5:1.
Nice video Brian. Looks like that feed is a hit with the bees. Will be interesting to see how the Varroxan works.
We shall see. I'll do some washes after I pull them. Hopefully trying something new doesn't backfire.
