  • Hey all,
Please enjoy this interview with Randy Oliver, one of the leading experts in the Beekeeping community. Randy started keeping Bees in 1966. Since then, he has created a migratory beekeeping operation in California, and currently runs around 1000-1500 hives with his two sons. Randy hosts the website Scientific Beekeeping where he posts all of the research information.
It was truly a pleasure being able to interview Randy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This is the best interview I have heard Randy give. He is brilliant and instead of a lot of overload he explains what’s important. Loved it

You should have asked him about his new research. It’s about thymol. Since he published that article that’s all the talk.

    OMGosh. Two things.
    1. Randy. speaks of little ads on his website and I get 10 watching this short video. How ironic. Like varroa.. The damned things just keep on Popping up. 😢
    2. The best interviewers let the interviewee speak. All your interuptions and pretty much irrelavent anectodal stories pretty much heavily diminished this interview.
Known Randy 40 + years. Hes way better that. you boxed him into.
Id say that at least 30% of the time was underutilized if the goal was to provide useful anf relavent info to the general beeping public.
Probably won't tune into any more if the next one is equivalently poorly done.

Appreciate you watching. While I could have gone the typical route and asked about his research, I felt there are plenty of videos on that, plenty of podcasts. I like to mix it up and toss curveball questions. Randy saying two times, nobody has ever asked that was rewarding for me.
I do very few of these and will admit I'm no professional.

Our winters, on average last 4 or so months. The last 2 have been mild, but on average, where I'm located, we'll get snow in December and our last snow is in late March/April. They generally stay locked up that entire time.

*Watching this felt like a personal interview about bees. Best interview I've ever seen. Randy truly loves bees and nature. His knowledge aside, he does this from curiosity and love and you can tell this in this interview. I like these kind of interviews with beekeepers. All about personal experiences and learning, not really fact checking the entire interview. more of a personal touch. Great job both of you gents.*

@@JamesLeesBees I always think of Dunning Kruger because that more or less mirrors my Beekeeping journey. RIght now i'm on the slope of enlightenment.

    • @JamesLeesBees
      @JamesLeesBees 2 місяці тому

@@CastleHivesthe slope of enlightenment is a concoction based on media distortion of the study's actual results and findings....that chart, is not from the paper itself but instead is more a meme of someone's distorted interpretation of the cognitive bias being discussed in the paper.
Ultimately Dr. Dunning says the study was more about being misinformed than actually being uninformed.
Ultimately the DK effect is highly criticized, but people like Randy Oliver and Rusty Burlew have popularized using the graph the media has made up to stratify beekeepers into classes of skill and disenfranchise those who have knowledge but less experience.
It's a catch 22. I'm not a betting man, but I'd put money on the fact that most who use the Dk effect to malign knowledge or applaud it ...have not read the study or its criticisms.
Which, ironically embodies the DK effect they are using to describe someone else.
      ...jus saying.
