By the middle of the tenth century, Byzantium - the Roman Empire - was stronger than ever. Its armies were ascendant and always on the attack, retaking lost lands. While the climax of the conquests took place under Basil the Bulgar-slayer, they got into full-swing under the warrior-emperors Nikephoros Phokas and John Tzimiskes.

Constantine VII (944-959) | Byzantine History
Переглядів 4,1 тис.4 місяці тому
After a life spent in the shadow of power, Constantine VII got his first chance to rule for real in 944, taking on the challenge of continuing the Empire's resurgence. Despite being middle-aged by the standards of the time, he had no experience of ruling - so would Byzantium prosper under his rule? All Greek pronunciations are according to the modern standard. (Or, rather, my butchering of the ...
Romanos Lekapenos | Byzantine History
Переглядів 11 тис.10 місяців тому
The Macedonian dynasty held sway over the Eastern Roman Empire for 189 years, yet for twenty-five years in that era another dynasty shared the throne. These upstarts were the Lekapenoi; their founder, Romanos, was a usurper. Usurpers were not novelties in Constantinople, but his mercy certainly was - as was his ability to juggle crises, and bring calm to a trouble state. This was just as well, ...
The Fall of the Komnenians | Byzantine History

For ninety-nine years three Komnenian emperors - Alexios, John and Manuel - ruled the Byzantine Empire. They inherited a state on the brink of collapse, but by the time they were done they had built Byzantium back up into the most powerful European empire. Yet fortune is fickle. Shortly after Manuel died, his dynasty would collapse; not long after that, so too did the Empire - decapitated by th...

Basil II was by FAR the greatest Eastern Roman emperor. His only fault (and it was a major one) was the one you mentioned, his total failure to think about the succession. If only his foolish brother had a son or Basil adopted some competent general like the Early Roman empire.

The real reason was too much internal corruption and intrigue within the Byzantine aristocracy. The Byzantine empire was too rotten internally. They inspired no one to fight for them except well paid mercenaries. Very sad because Anatolia could today have been primarily Greek and a much more dependable NATO ally than today’s Turkey or however they spell it now.

I seriously wish there was a serious high budget film adaptation/media recognition about the later Roman Empire, preferably set during the time of emperors like Justinian, Heraclius, Leo III, Ioannes I, Basil II, etc. In my opinion the story of it enduring to 1475 was so much more interesting and dramatic to read about than what went on in the pax romana, which Hollywood already beat to death by the 90s. One of the recent examples I remember the empire being depicted is in the Vikings series, but of course they didn’t bother with historical continuity and the costumes department was about 900 years off. They made the Varangian Guard look like ancient Romans 😂.

Constantine picked a great spot for Constantinople! Well defended city. Wealthy in the east. More cities. Not until Manzikert & 4th crusade did the wheels start to come off. If not for a plague back in the 6th Emperor Justinians reconquest of the west would have taken hold better. And a disastrous 30 year war with the Sassinads opened the door for the muslims invasions. Weather, disease, invasions civil wars all wear down empire's. But from Agustus to the advent of gunpowder & 40 years after the fall of Constantinople,Columbus landed in the Western hemisphere. That's one hell of run! Very impressive organized state craft! Roma! Roma!

I've always heard after the sack of Constantinople in 1453. The last emperors brothers fled to Italy then gave the Imperial seal & regalia to what would become the Spanish empire's monarchs. Is this true? Has any one else heard of this transfer of power to Spain?

Interested to know what you think of the argument that the reason for the fall of the Eastern provinces in the reign of Phocas was due to the civil war Heraclius started. Due to the threat of Heraclius, Phocas withdrew troops from the East to meet him, in turn causing the East to fall to the Persians. I’m not doubting Heraclius’s achievements, only that the crisis he inherited was in fact partly of his own making!

Have you ever heard of the tragedy of Emperor Heraclius the wise? It's not a tale the Romans would tell you It is a tragedy unlike any other A man who rises from the ashes of a broken Empire, saves the Empire & restores it to glory But then, as he grew older, he became weaker So weak to the point that he couldn't lead his armies on the fields of battle that he had triumphed in years before Ironic, he could save the Empire from destruction But he couldn't stop the Empire's decline as a Superpower Rome would never again be the Titan of the Mediterranean The closest they came was in the reign of Basil II
