  • In the final chapter of Eumenes' life, he faces off against Antigonus to determine the future of Alexander's empire, all the while fending off other ambitious warlords - sometimes, however, the greatest threats a general can face come from within.

Isn’t it oddly poetic how the silver shields ended up? Often times throughout history I find examples of such strange poetic/coincidental fates, that seem like literal divine karma. Had the silver shields remained loyal, Eumenes would have likely won, they would have gotten their baggage train, and they would have lived. Eumenes, a seemingly heroic figure of the time from humble origins, was killed off by a betrayal of disgusting magnitudes and the ENTIRE silver shields, as high and mighty as they were, were essentially disposed of. God I love history.

You think eumenes would have won? He lost every single clash with antigonous. At gabiene eumenes lost even before the capture of baggage. Antigonous managed to cover the movement of his cavalry to route a huge portion of eumenes's cavalry and had an elephant killed under him and then pushed him back to another wing and formed a screen so that one of antigonous wing would fall on eumenes's infantry. Silver shields had lost their faith in him

Truly a terrific video! Thank you for the 2 on Eumenes of Cardia. When it comes to veracity in the ancient world, “words are wind and oaths are smoke”. Think it was fitting that the Silver Shields were broken up and sent piecemeal against mountain tribes. Wonder what happened to their baggage and all their families, plunder, etc.

I feel Eumenes was just as ruthless and ambitious as the other successors. I think he pretended to be loyal to Alexander's ghost, for morale sake, so others would follow him, and god bless him, it was working for a time. Inspite of what i may think of Eumenes true intentions, his story, is possiblity the greatest underdog story to almost succeed.

A fantastic riveting series of a virtually ignored timeperiod.
This is every bit as exciting as the english civil wars or chunese warring states. Thanks for bringing it to life and letting me see it with new eyes.

I always wondered what wod happened if Eumenese had won against antigonus. He might have instantly become the strongest successor similar to how antigonus had after he beat Eumenese.
