It's a shame he had a short reign. But, at least he was a good emperor to the Roman people. Although the sack of Amorium during his reign tarnished his reputation.
The seeds of the upcoming Byzantine Golden Age were sown during the reign of Theophilus. This period was a turning point in Byzantine history.
Great video on an underrated emperor, though I'm sad you didn't mention the beacon system. It may not have done much in the grand scheme of things but it's just so badass

I've been looking for the video about Emperor Theophilos for a very long time! And I'm glad I've finally found it! So thank you so much for this video! A bit of disappointment there that the so-called Roman-Andalusian Alliance did not get flesh out some more because many people did not know about it. But generally, this is a good a video about him!
Also, what will happened if Emperor Theophilos did not die so early? If he lived long, will he be able to avenge the Sack of Amorium and even secure the good relations and firm alliance with the Emirate of Cordoba in al-Andalus?
Underrated Emperor
Your excellent presentation of my ancestor Θεόφιλος does not mention his first son, Constantine VII , he made coemperor at his birth, but who died at 2 years of age. He was not counted on the list of the Constantines : this is why the son of Leon Vi the Wise was named Constatine VII and not VIII.
Emperess Hagia Theodora , a Mamikonian, obtained the definitive cessation of ikonoklasm, simply by substituing the ikonoklast patriarch of Constantinople with an ikonodule one, and was canonised a saint by the orthodox church for this important accomplishment.
Constantine VI was son of Leo IV and Irene of Athens

I demed to correct a 1115 years old classification inprecision ! The first son of Theophilos is not considered by lists of emperors altough having been sacred at his birth.Konstantinos VII porphyrogennetos should be :VIII and the last amorian Constantinos: IX
@@ezzovonachalm9815 In Byzantine historiography co-emperors who never became senior emperor aren't given regnal numbers. For example, Theodosius son of Maurice was made co-emperor by his father in 590, but we don't call him Theodosius III, rather that title goes to the senior emperor during the Twenty Years' Anarchy

Great video thank you. Very underrated emperor, can’t help but think he was poisoned, dying so suddenly at age 30 and leaving an infant on the throne, such a shame.
Also fascinating how he had seemingly unlimited money somehow?
Yeah, I think Theophilos could have gone on to do great things, though his early death did allow icons to finally return the year following his death.

The definitive end of the iconoclast heresy was the merit of emperess Theodora Mamikonian, after the death of Theophilos.She was very pious, destitued the iconoklast patriarch and replaced him with an iconodule one.
For this important achievement she was canonised. A religious chant says " Thou righteous and fair adornement of the orthodox church"
.Her sacred incorrupt remains are found in Corfu,in the church of the most holy Θεοτόκος ( the mother of God).She is commemorated on the first sunday of the great fest ( Eastern)..

I hardly ever complain about such trivial details in this type of videos, but this one really made me wish you had chosen to pronounce Theophilos' name in the obvious and correct way instead of randomly converting that iota into a diphthong for absolutely no reason (thus resulting in "Theoph-eye-los")... again not something I would normally whine about but the script featured the guy's name so many times that I found myself cringing at "Theofayelos" being mentioned a million times in that manner. That being said, clearly the overall quality of the video and the research was pretty high, so well done, I'm now subscribed :)

@@Serapeum hehe true... for future reference only consider that in greek, unlike modern english, "a"lphas and "i"otas are *always* a single short vowel, never an "ey" or "ay" ... hence ,for example, the "correct" way to pronounce would be Leonίdas rather than "Leeonaydas" (as Zack Snyder would say)... Of course I'm not claiming one always has to play by the rules of Greek phonology when speking a different language. For example I totally accept that an English speaker is going to pronounce _Thucidides_ like "Thusseedides" instead of the more "correct" ThuKidίdes but since Theophilos is probably very very far from being a household name(not that Thucidides is necessarily) thus lacking an "established" english pronunciation I think in such a case it is preferable to try to stick close to the original pronunciation if possible ;)
