FPGA CPU - Part 1 - Switches, LEDs, & 7-Segment Displays
Hi all. I just wanted to share my latest project for those who may be interested in following along.
The goal of this project is to use some budget FPGA development boards from AliExpress to build a CPU in an FPGA. I'm using a Xilinx Artix-7 and the Xilinx Vivado IDE. The links to the hardware, schematics, and source code are and will continue to be posted to my GitHub as the project progresses.
This is very much a Ben Eater / "But How Do It Know" / Ross McGowan inspired SAP CPU design, along with inspiration from a number of other sources. Hoping to learn a lot in the build process, and I figured I'd share with UA-cam with the hope that someone else finds it helpful as well!
Planned Specs / Goals for the Project:
Input Options to include:
- Dip Switches
- Simple Push Buttons
- Multiplexed Push Buttons
- Keyboard Input over UART
Output Options to Include:
- LEDs
- 7-Segment Displays
- UART to PC Monitor
- UART to LED Display
- VGA to PC Monitor
- SPI LED Display
- I2C LED Display
"SAP" CPU Components:
- ALU - The first handful of projects will be focused on this in more of a simple calculator implementation
- Program Counter
- A, B, and Output Registers
- RAM
- Memory Address Register
- Instruction Register
- Instruction Decoder
- Control
- Display (7-Seg Displays, UART to PC Serial Terminal, VGA to PC Monitor, etc)

Hey MSFS2020 Community! It's been a while! I just sold my 5900X 3080 B550 combo and upgraded to a 7900X3D 4070Ti B650 build. This upgrade from AM4 to AM5 also included a new Gen4 NVME SSD (I previously had Gen3) and a Windows 10 to 11 upgrade, so that means a fresh MSFS2020 install and having to completely reinstall all my add-ons. I plan to do more detailed performance testing at some point, b...

Siglent SDS 1202X-E is awesome finding between "affordable" scopes. I have Hantek DSO2D15 for a while, it has kinda everything, however many of features are only for words. Trigger glitches, math functions glitch, in slow resolution (50 ms and slower) graph often freeze with impulse packets clobbering into single color ribbon without a chance to distinguish something, overall speed is sloweish by general. In our new office we have Siglent SDS 1202X-E - tried it, realized that DSO2D15 is not for work. Seen this video and bought SDS 1202X-E for myself. Thanks about notice about firmware upgrade :) By the way which probe you're using?

I'm using it in addition to air manager, but I guess yes, if you wanted to use this with only the popped out panels, And if you didn't care about needing to control the buttons on the bezels of those touch screens, then yes you could use this program for free. But if you want access to any of those bezels, you'll need to use air manager. Their manager does the bezels. Pop out panel manager only handles the touch screen capability of the popped out panels themselves.

I just ordered a 7800x3d and have a 3080 12gb. I am putting it on a rog board with 64gb memory. I am running a 49" ultra wide screen with three touch panels and a side monitor. How Do you like the 4070ti compared to the 3080? I was thinking of upgrading but may wait for the 50 series.

    • @mcorrive12
      @mcorrive12 3 місяці тому

When I first got the 4070Ti I made a few performance testing videos and called them 4070Ti testing... Somebody left a comment on one of those videos making fun of me and telling me I should have called it a 5900X testing video because I'm clearly CPU limited. In retrospect he was correct. And even with my current setup now, I'm still CPU limited. The fact is, MSFS 2020 is heavily single thread limited. Until they fix that (which I believe they're doing in MSFS 2024) our GPUs are going to continue to be sitting there not at 100% load. If asobo makes good on the promise of better multi-core performance in MSFS 2024, we might find that our 40 series cards are finally maxed out and we end up wanting for 50 series cards. If I were in your shoes I'd probably hold off. Even having just built up this system, I still think as soon as the 9000 series CPUs and 50 series GPUs hit the market, I'm going to find myself wanting to upgrade. At $370 for the 7900X3D I figured now was a good time to get my AM5 platform all set up and running properly, And when the new chips hit the market, it'll just be a drop in replacement for me and I'll be able to sell the 7900x3D for $250 or more. I mainly made the jump from 3080 to 4070 because at the time you could only get frame generation on the 40 series cards. Now that it's been a year and a half or so, clearly there's other workarounds to get frame generation on a number of other graphics cards. All that to say, I would expect your performance to be about the same as mine. I was really stuck between the 7800X3D and the 7900X3D because they're the same price, and all of the benchmarks show the 7800X3D eek out slightly more gaming performance than the 7900X3D. I was afraid since I'm running a whole bunch of background tasks, the 8 cores of the 7800x3D might not be able to keep up with that. The bummer is by going for the 7900X3D, I'm limited to six cores operating on the 3D VCashe, versus eight cores all on the 3D vcash with the 7800X3D. Good luck with the new system!

interesting use case for 7900X3D. all these add-0on apps you plan for running on performance cores and game running on X3D cores is a good example of why this CPU is a good choice. My brother runs this CPU with 4090 in VR Quest 3 and He tried process lasso and Gamebar does just as good a job. Making sure you update Gamebar Xbox gaming service and store apps in general, the 7900X3D does a great job separating apps to the appropriate cores. the 7900X3D has more L2 cache than 7800X3D and faster cores. in theory if 6 cores does the job, it should be faster. Hardware unboxed recently reviewed it given the price drop and it didn't fair as well but they were single title no external add-ons like flight sim. Now you can stuff all those none Main Thread processes on the non 3D cores and should be solid experience.

The GPU, though it has 5 physical output ports, can only support 4 output feeds at a time. So for the monitors are run off the GPU. The 5th monitor is running off the CPU integrated graphics. When I was running a similar setup on the AM4 platform, the 5900X3D did not have integrated graphics, so I had to use a USB to HDMI converter. You can find those on Amazon. Do I haven't tested it, I would imagine the integrated graphics results in less of a performance hit to the CPU than if I were to go back to using a USB to HDMI converter.

You really want to get a dedicated logic analyser. The dreamsourcelabs have internal buffering and can store a huge amount of data. Mine captures spi at 5mhz and decodes it faultlessly. Decoding 110k serial is a nothing. Or use Salea 8 channel clone for 10 bucks which is a lot better than your any of your scopes. By a long way. Both these use the sigrok or derivatives. They can decode 100s of protocols. (I have the new rigol scope but I would not bother using it as a logic analyser) Good idea building a fast pulse generator to test the bandwidth. I was yelling when you were using a sine wave to test the bandwidth. ha. I got one of the dedicated generators. My scope is 200MHz and measures 220 by rise time.

    • @mcorrive12
      @mcorrive12 5 місяців тому

I agree with you on the logic analyzer. Ive had the bus pirate logic sniffer on my home lab bench for 7 years now but have yet to it. I figured a scope with bus decode is nice because you can watch the communication for any kind of glitches or weak signal strength (abnormally low logic level or runt pulses). I see them as two different tools for two different purposes. As far as the pulse gen. I'm still not happy with my edge speed so I'm building a transistor avalanche pulse gen and I have parts on order for an LT6905 because I read it has really fast edges. I have no current need for even 200 bandwidth but it's a fun little project just to see what I can get. Of course all theis playing with scopes has me looking at the Rigols that are hackable to 500Hz. Again, way faster than I need an can justify the money for. I think I'm finally settling on the SDS1104X-E. If I return another scope Amazon might drop me as a customer! 🤣 Thanks again for the feedback!

Maybe I should send you mine to keep yours company on the shelf and live happily ever after :) Of course a man can't be happy with a 5nS pulse time! Instead of building one, I got this one from Ali: "Fast Edge Pulse Generator 350 Picosecond Rising Edge" for $30 USD. It's got a BNC on the board that goes right to the instrument, so no cables or probes. I needed this about as much you probably do. :) May I suggest you never look into getting a GPSDO, it's straight to the time nut asylum from there. PS. My logic analyser picks up glitches at the level they would be a logic level event way better than my Rigol DHO.

UPDATE: RESPONSE FROM SIGLENT TO MY UA-cam COMMENT REPORTING THE BUG TO THEM "Thanks for your feedback. We've already told the relevant technical team to deal with the bugs about this version of firmware, and you can use the firmware version 1.3.26 for the time being. If you have any other technical questions, please feel free to send us at support@siglentna.com."

Siglent EU never published firmware version 1.3.27 so I didn't know it existed. In fact I thought they'd given up updating this scopes firmware. I've been using firmware version 1.3.26 ever since it was published and have never had any problems with UART serial decode. As a quick test I used the 1KHz CAL signal as a data source with custom baud rate set to 2000 bits/sec, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop on firmware version 1.3.26 and the scope correctly decoded 55H with the character windows correctly butted up next to each other. I tried the same setup with version 1.3.27 firmware I got from Siglant NA and the character windows are blank with gaps between them, which is obviously wrong.

Will now try 1.3.26, as the only other documented changes in 1.3.27 are for PC connections, which I don't need/use. EDIT: Yup, 1.3.26 seems to work with a single stop bit. Keeping that version.
