MSFS2020 Sim Update 10 - Multi Monitor FPS Testing in NYC

  • The performance with SU10 seems to keep getting better but I would imagine Microsoft isn't optimizing things for a user running OBS, Zoom, LetsView, FaceTracking, all while running triple monitor scenery and two touchscreen instrument panels with Air Manager. I think this is a big ask for a PC that has enough trouble running the simulator even without all the background tasks. I'll keep testing to find a compromise between best graphics and stability. Just figured I'd post what I'm seeing in my initial testing.

Matt Russ Barlow ran multiple monitors and twin 16.5” touchscreens using two networked computers.

Yeah, that's more money and complication than I'm looking to get into. I don't think MSFS2020 supports this yet. Until they do it makes things like pop out panels places behind the touchscreen air manager panels difficult. My performance has improved and I the point that it's playable now with SU10, DX12 and DLSS.

Hey Matt I'm a lapsed pilot got my PPL at KBDR in 2019 so you must be nearby:-) I'm looking to graduate from my triple screen Xplane setup to your MSFS setup. I like low level flying and practicing engine-outs, not in scenery necessarily as dense as NYC, but able to see buildings, obstacles, trees in good fidelity at low level. Love the dual air manager screens. Would you do anything different with your setup today? Better video card? Better processor? Are you currently video card bound or CPU bound?

Hey Scooter. I threw as much money as my simulator as I was willing to spend. It kills me that with an RTX 3080 and Ryzen 9 5900 I'm still only getting 30 FPS on High graphics. But MSFS is a beast. And 5 monitors on any PC is a serious demand. If you're looking for 5 monitors, spend as much as you possibly can on hardware, or be willing to accept lower frame rates. I'm still CPU bound with my current setup - limited by main thread while the majority of the threads are averaging 25% utilization.

Ok Thanks. Appreciate your update videos and the effort that goes into them. I think if you are a real pilot, you appreciate the peripherals that triple monitors give you plus the interactive cockpit that 2 air manager screens give you. You and Russ Barlow are kings!

@@Scooter75-uw8ij Wow, king is a strong word! 😆
I'll agree Russ Barlow is the king! I'm just a wannabe 😆
Russ was my inspiration for my entire upgrade from 3 monitors to 5 monitors. That upgrade cost me in FPS, but is made up for in mouse/keyboard-free realism and immersion.
I'm extremely impressed with Sim update 11s performance on the 3080 and Ryzen 9 5900x. I'm around 35 FPS on the ground without all my background recording tasks running, and closer to 28 FPS with those tasks running. Add 7 FPS or so for cruise altitude.
Thanks again for watching. I'm glad people are finding the information helpful!

To follow up with recent updates. Since you posted this I started paying attention to what's going on with the RTX 4070TI and 4080. I'm seriously considering going that route to get DLSS3 and GPU Frame Generation. I think my CPU limited setup could really use those features, and I think it would have even more impact than trying to upgrade my CPU (5900x) again.
That said, I don't have $1k to be throwing at my simulator right now, and I agree with the overall GPU crowd belief that $1k+ MSRP for these cards is price gouging. So I'm just window shopping for the future.

Would you say that MSFS 2020 is just too hefty a program for current PC's? Even with top of the line cpu and gpu? I love the graphics, and wish I could get 30 fps at ultra settings on 3 monitors, but maybe I'll have to wait a few years. Of course, by then the software will be even more demanding on the hardware!

    • @mcorrive12
      @mcorrive12  Рік тому

I WOULD NOT say that [now that DLSS and DX12 have been implemented. I probably WOULD have said that when I was running SU9.]
I would say it all depends what you're trying to achieve. Like buying an airplane, you need to start by defining your mission.
If my mission is Triple Monitor Scenery plus 2 touchscreen instrument panel monitors at 40 FPS, my current system of a RTX 3800, Ryzen 5900x, and 32Gb RAM is capable of doing that at High Graphics using Balanced DLSS.
If my mission is to achieve that same 40FPS with 5 monitors again while recording using OBS, I would need to drop the graphics settings to Medium or Low to maintain the frame rate.
It's all what you want to spend for your hardware. If you want to crank the graphics settings up with 5 monitors, the hardware is going to be expensive. If you're good with Med/low graphics settings on 5 monitors, you can get away with mid tier hardware.
I can't fly at Ultra settings with my setup cuz I would need a faster CPU and GPU to do it. That also means more RAM and a bigger power supply. Essentially an all new PC. Not gonna happen 😂.
All this said, keep in mind MSFS graphics blows X-plane11 graphics away. Having said that, people needed 2 PCs networked together to hit 40 FPS with 5 monitors on X-plane11 a few years ago. So today, sure we have faster hardware, but we're also trying to run much better graphics and on 1 PC instead of 2 networked together. I give the MSFS2020 massive applause for the platform they have created and I'm thankful they continue to improve it.

@@mcorrive12 Thanks for the response, I appreciate it! I'd be happy at this point with just three monitors and maybe a touchscreen panel at 30 fps. Currently I can only get about 15 fps on medium settings. I have to be better than 20 to log into Pilotedge. To get higher than 20 I have to go to low settings, and the graphics are just too blurry. I'm working with a three year old laptop, which was top of the line when I bought it. I am realizing that even the best gaming laptop will not be as good as a desktop, even with the same processor and graphics card. But I need a laptop for work, and don't really want both.
So are you saying that as the software improves, it can mean more fps? I was assuming the opposite to be true, but I'm no expert.
I agree that MSFS is amazing on scenery, although I prefer flying X-plane 11 for the easier user interface, as well as things like the pop up G1000 panels with controls.
Still it's an incredible improvement over V4 that I thought was fantastic back in the day!

@@ShadowAlmighty The game was poorly optimized when it was released. Also, most cames are main CPU thread limited, including MSFS2020. The DirectX12 implementing helped with the main thread limitation, allowing more CPU cores to spread the load, ultimately giving higher FPS. Also DLSS uses AI to reduce the GPU load and improve framerates. As their software optimizations improve it will eventually hit a point of diminishing returns. At that point faster hardware is your only hope. I think my 3080 and 5900 is just about bare minimum for a 5 monitor setup running at Medium to High Graphics. If I want ultra settings, I need to lose 2 monitors or buy faster hardware.
My trying to record for UA-cam while flying further limits my free rate. I probably take a 15-20% FPS hit from all the background tasks that are UA-cam recording based (OBS, Zoom, Webcams, LetsView).

@@mcorrive12 Thanks for the response. When you say 5 monitors, two of them are running Air Manager, correct? Does running Air Manager reduce your fps significantly? I don't have it yet, but I ran the demo on a third monitor, and did not notice any frame rate drop, or at most, 1 fps.
I tried out MSFS at night yesterday for the first time, and it was incredible, even at 17 fps!

@@ericsmith313 so you're running 30% more pixels than me (4k vs 3x1080) with a 2060 super. Yeah, this simulator set up the way a training simulator should be set up brings expensive hardware to it's knees.
