Shenmue 70 Man Battle speedrun in 2:25.56 by Richard Payne [Former World Record]
After almost 3 years of attempts, SUB 2:30 is finally here! And, as an added bonus, it’s a new World Record too! Still can’t believe it’s happening!
To celebrate, I've made a movie-like montage showing this challenge from Ryo's point of view, and the resolve that leads him to defeat the Mad Angels gang in 2 minutes and 25 seconds! It's just a little something I threw together for fun, so don't expect this to make any logical sense. 😅
For those interested in learning more about the run and my thoughts, I've written a more extensive pastebin document.

A very small step towards the SUB 2:30 goal… but a new World Record nonetheless! In case you missed it, my previous run had been beaten by Shenmue runner “Thatsmekarl” with a 2:33.30, a 0.40 faster run! That should tell you how difficult it’s become to save time now. In any case, Karl’s run gave me the motivation I needed to come back to my quest to get past the 2:30 wall! This record literally...
Shenmue II - Fighting Final Boss Dou Niu in early morning? (in-depth exploration)

Have you ever wondered if the final rooftop fight against Dou Niu in Disc 3 of Shenmue II would change depending on when you got there? 🤔 Normally, Ryo & friends always reach the top by 6 pm or so, with the iconic segment taking place at sunset, but is there any way to arrive there earlier, like in early morning? Would the finale change at all? Would the game stop us from doing that in any form...

    Shenmue 1 isn't perfect but still a solid game. However having this in the game is a major mistake. Most players are not able to defeat chai but if you were somehow lucky enough to defeat him this would ruin the story in my opinion. Just think about chai is supposed to be the main villain and the final boss and your first fight you where able to beat him? Does that make any sense? The best thing for this scene is even if you lower his health bar the scene still plays out with fukusan saving Ryo. Yu Suzuki give me a fucking break man.

      I’ve already answered your other comment, but on the topic of “spamming throw moves”, only Demon Drop can truly be spammed due to enemies lacking an “escape action” (in Shenmue 1 only). Even with that, spamming the move is not exactly easy. If you time it just a split second too soon or late compared to how I do it, the throw will fail and Chai won’t be affected, leaving you open to his counterattack. I wouldn’t recommend trying to mimic what I do in the video, but instead go for a more pragmatic approach. Read my other comment for some general hints you might want to keep in mind when fighting Chai.

    somehow he is too easy in your video. His attacks little and rarely. It’s impossible for me to attack him during my strikes - he always interrupts me with his strikes. He fight more harder on my iso image

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 3 місяці тому

      There’s no difference in difficulty between all versions of the game. Chai always acts the same way no matter which version you play, but there’s RNG involved, and so he can either spam his strongest moves multiple times or spam his weakest moves multiple times or a mix of both. Not much you can do if, say, he always uses his jump throw or his somersault kick, but thankfully Ryo has constant health regen, so I’d say that’s still not a huge problem. I can see why you’d think “he’s easier in my video”, but the reason is simple. My video compiles 6 of the best fights I had at that time. For “Best”, I mean I both play well and get lucky with Chai’s behavior. There were dozens of fights I didn’t include where I got hit too many times or did not utilize the moves I wanted to showcase. If you find it hard to successfully hit him, you’re not alone. His behavior and hitbox are a pain to deal with, especially if you’re also having trouble with the combat system. I had another person ask me for some useful general tricks to know against Chai, so I’ll repost my answer here. --- If you’re looking for more general tricks to know when fighting Chai, here’s a bunch of them that come to mind. 1 - Rely on the Guard button. Evading is not easy, while blocking is much more effective and will grant you plenty of opportunities to dish free damage to Chai. You can’t block everything of course (Chai’s throw moves come to mind), but most of his moves can be blocked and punished if you’re ready to strike immediately after blocking. 2 - Use Demon Drop and Darkside Hazuki. These are the only throw moves Chai can’t escape, so if you’re good at throws, you might want to go for them if you see an opening. 3 - Prioritize leg moves. Try not to rely too much on hand moves, since Chai can counter most of them with a counterattack unique to his style (he can’t counter Elbow Assault and Rising Flash). Crawl Cyclone in particular is one move Chai often gets caught off guard from, due to its round hitbox. Other moves I’d recommend: Side Reaper Kick, Hold Against Leg, Mud Spider (though it leaves Ryo open at the end), Brutal Tiger (only if it’s the untrained/beginner form of the move), Katana Mist Slash, Rising Flash. 4 - Use Dark Moon (especially if you had it trained to moderate level). This leg move is one of Ryo’s strongest moves for damage output and also has the unique property of knocking Chai down if it connects. Granted, Chai usually dodges it since it’s kind of a slow move, but it's worth going for it every once in a while. 5 - Drag out armlock to recover health. While situational, there may be times when you’re trying to use a throw on Chai and you will instead armlock him (long story short, the game defaults to the armlock if throw fails and Chai is using a compatible hand move). If that happens, it’s a good practice to "kick around". Using those kicks (the ones Ryo can only use during armlocks) will prolong the armlock's overall duration, allowing you to recover more health. Don’t use them more than twice though, otherwise Ryo will knock down Chai with his Elbow Strike, and you will have less time to recover health.

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 4 місяці тому

      I can see where you’re coming from, but what you’re saying isn’t 100% correct. In this game, there’s no way to block from behind (there’s no action for it in the code and it wouldn’t make sense either), and Chai is no exception; so if you somehow get behind him and attack before he’s able to dodge, it’s a 100% guaranteed hit (same applies for Ryo). Now as for Chai not blocking my attacks at the start, the reason is pretty simple: if you watch carefully, you’ll see Chai was in the middle of his own attack! In Shenmue (and most fighting games I presume), you can’t attack and block at the same time, so you’re potentially exposing yourself to damage every time you go for a move. In the video, I take advantage of the fact Chai is in the middle of his “2 punches 1 kick” combo and strike him with a well-timed Katana Mist Slash. Immediately after that, he yet again goes for an attack, his Jump throw move to be exact, which I interrupt with Hold Against Leg (remember: he can’t block it because he’s in the middle of his own attack). Obviously, you need skill, knowledge, and luck to pull this off, and timing is key to whether your move lands before Chai’s move connects. When I made this video, I wanted to show off the new “infinite combo” I had discovered, and fought Chai for hours until I got this very lucky attempt, where I’m able to initiate the combo almost immediately. Obviously, in a common scenario Chai wouldn’t give you two openings at the start of the fight, plus nailing that Hold Against Leg after his Jump throw is so incredibly hard I’m not ashamed to admit it was just a fluke. This video is not exactly a guide on how to beat Chai (title is a little clickbait I know…), but rather a showcase on how you can destroy him with the infinite wall combo. If you’re looking for more general tricks to know when fighting Chai, here’s a bunch of them that come to mind. This leg move is one of Ryo’s strongest moves for damage output and also has the unique property of knocking Chai down if it connects. Granted, Chai usually dodges it since it’s kind of a slow move, but thanks to the arcade being tiny and narrow, you can get lucky and hit him anyway, allowing you to go for wall combos and dish out even more damage. Thank you! Shenmue is truly a one of a kind when it comes to this. It does adventure, life simulation, free roaming, worldbuilding, it tells an intriguing story... and also manages to offer an incredibly rich, yet simple combat system. Yeah, it can feel a little clunky and dated on some aspects nowadays, but there's no other game that has the courage to do all these things at once and execute them so well, especially when you consider Shenmue's 1999 release. It's a shame there aren't nearly enough fights throughout the game to truly make the combat system shine. 💔 If you'd like to learn more about Shenmue's combat system, please check my other Shemmue videos. I remember screaming in happiness like a child when I got it just a year ago. 😂 Karl's 2:29 is probably my favorite run from his records (first sub 2:30 ever performed, plus epic fighting against the bosses), though I can't say I have an exact list in mind. I just enjoy all runs unconditionally, especially considering when they were achieved and the story behind them. In fact, 2:53 by afterblue is also one of favorites for this very reason, because it was THE run that truly made me get into the 70 Man Battle speedrunning. I owe a lot to him and Kenjito Master for shaping my love for the series. 🙇‍♂

      @@ArmBreakFire1234 One other player I wish we knew more about is a Japanese guy called “Kazemaru”. He was on top of most of the official Shenmue Passport leaderboards (the one hosted by SEGA in the early 2000s), boasting a time of 2:56 for the 70 Man Battle, a world record which stood until late 2019! I’d love to learn more about him, find about if he’s still passionate about Shenmue, how he used to play the 70 Man Battle back in the day etc., but could not find a single trace of him online. I don’t know when exactly Karl started playing. Supposedly, he already knew about Shenmue and he probably already had a grasp of the combat system, but it’s clear he practiced really hard to get to this level so quickly. Obviously, he learned most of the speedrun tricks from Kenjito, afterblue, and me, which streamlined the process, but that doesn’t make his efforts any less impressive. When I started in late 2019, afterblue was my only “competition” as Kenjito had already gone MIA some time before, and the route and strategies used to be different and, in general, much slower. It’s only in mid 2020 that I discovered the Wall Glitch trick, which opened the door for massive amounts of time saved, but in return it made it much harder to complete a run, as the Wall Glitch relies mainly on luck to succeed. When the Wall Glitch became a thing, afterblue decided not to use it (he probably deemed it too annoying, can't blame him for that!) and kept playing with the old-school strategies, leaving me as the only true speedrunner. Naturally, without competition, I had no rush to grind the 70 Man Battle record, hence why I took my time achieving faster runs. I'll also add that, despite my best efforts, I was never able to attract more players, something that discouraged me from posting more of my runs, eventually leading me to focus on other stuff. It’s only in late 2023, not even half a year ago, that I learned of Karl, and soon after, he was the new record holder. That single-handedly reignited my passion for the 70 Man Battle and got me back into it, hence my two new records in the span of a couple of months, only for Karl to get the record back! Now, this is fun! With that said, getting these kinds of times is by no means a walk in the park. Perhaps it may look easy, considering most enemies die in one hit and the bosses seem to go down in a couple of blows, but in reality, it’s much more complex than that. I won’t go into detail on why it’s so difficult to achieve these times, otherwise we would be here for a year, but let's just say we make it look easy. You should give it a try one of these days, it's the best way to test how it works.

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 5 місяців тому

      Hi there, I talk specifically about this from 11:59 to 13:03. In a nutshell, if you're playing on the HD remaster you can only use Method #1 and Method #3 and you must avoid chaining moves directly after throws, grabs, and armlocks, as they will go right through the opponent due to a bug. To make an example, you can use this combo at 2:55 - Gut punch counter + Tornado Kick - but you can't use the one at 3:15 - Gut punch counter + Arm Break Fire + Shadow Reaper + Hold Against Leg - because Shadow Reaper won't connect after Arm Break Fire (throw move) due to the aforementioned bug exclusive to the HD remaster; you can get rid of Arm Break Fire and just use Shadow Reaper right after Gut Punch counter, and that will work just fine though. ✌ As a rule of thumb, try removing throws, grab actions, and armlock actions from the combos I show, and there's a good chance they will work in the HD remaster, albeit less damaging and impressive. 😓

      Hey man, yes you can play Shenmue 1 & 2 on PC without emulation! SEGA released an HD remaster collection in 2018 for all modern platforms. Just search for "Shenmue HD" or "Shenmue I & II" on Steam or Humble Bundle if you want to play it on PC. About question 2, yes and no. Once you beat Shenmue 1, the game will ask you to create a "Clear Save", which is used to transfer data to the second game. In addition, you can replay the 70 Man Battle in "Time attack/Time Trial" mode, which is the same as the story fight but you race for the best time, and Guizhang is not present. Just load up the game, then (on Dreamcast) go to "Options", "70 Personal FREE battle" and select the save you want to play it with. You can't replay anything else other than this fight, but it's still a cool addition.

When I saw you achieve 2:26 with such incredibly smooth gameplay and beautiful execution of the strategies, I knew I wanted to do the same, or at least achieve sub 2:30. ❤ Before pulling off this run, I'd got a dozen of sub 2 minutes 66 defeated runs, but they all died against Pedro (some of them being featured in "Ryo's dream" at the start of the video 🤣). If it weren't for him, we'd achieved sub 2:20 a long time ago. • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 6 місяців тому

      Hi, yeah the game can be harsh when it comes to accepting inputs so it’s not surprising. If I had to think of a reason why you can’t get it to work, maybe it’s because you’re forgetting to press the Run button to get closer after using the gut punch counterattack. Are you using the run button (like I showcase at 3:34)? Or are you going straight to Shadow Blade after Corner Drop? If you’re wondering why running is such a big deal, it’s because the game only accepts throws when you’re as close to the target as possible, otherwise it will default all throw inputs to a grab. In your case, if you input Shadow Blade right after Corner Drop, Ryo will most likely be just a little too far from the opponent for the game to accept Shadow Blade and Ryo will 99% go for a grab attempt instead. That's why I mention "RT" in the button string at 3:34. I hope this helps. If this is not the case, let me know and I’ll try and help you identify what’s not working. 🙏

      @@darkknight_8891 Oh, now I see. Not only have I misunderstood your question, I’ve also somehow skipped the part when you mention you were playing the HD remaster. Now it makes perfect sense!... but prepare to be disappointed. 😟 Short version is - you’re not doing anything wrong. The modern HD releases downgraded some aspects of the combat system: some tricks can’t be used anymore, including the Shadow Blade combo you’re trying to get. That's the gist of it. 😶 Long version is - Elbow Assault goes through the enemy after Shadow Blade because the HD port suffers from bugged collision, with some of the hitboxes being completely absent (not sure what’s going on behind the scenes, but it’s clear something went wrong when d3t ported the game, but SEGA never bothered to listen to feedback, so the code never got fixed and there you have it...). This affects mostly throw moves, hence why you can’t hit the enemy with Elbow Assault after Shadow Blade. 🤦‍♂ I mention this shortcoming in the “Tips and oddities” section of the video from 12:00 onwards: “You can’t combo after throws, grabs and arm locks”. This means “Method #2” is completely useless in the HD remaster, while “Method #1 and #3” are stilll usable, but limited as you can’t chain throws with anything. I even make fun of this at 12:56 when I say “no cool Shadow Blade combos in HD. :/”, as they’re my favorite too. 💔 I know, this really sucks, but there’s no known fix to this. Not even modders were able to come with a solution on the PC version, at least as of the time of this comment. The only way to use throw combos is to play on the original Dreamcast version. 😕 Even with that, if there's anything else you need help with, let me know! ✌

      I reckon that could be achieved, but only by someone with extensive knowledge and experience on Shenmue modding. The hardest part would be to figure out a way to force the game to trigger these moves, plus doing that without breaking other moves in the process. 😬 I’ve had some success porting existing NPC moves to Ryo’s moveset, but that would always cause other moves to glitch out or straight-up not work anymore, not to mention game crashes (a lot), so I'm still far, far away from achieving a "move restoration" kind of mod. • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 7 місяців тому

      Thanks Sean, happy to hear you enjoyed the fighting! Like in all fighting games, it’s all a matter of putting the time to learn how the game behaves and expects you to behave. It’s no easy task, especially when Shenmue doesn’t offer a single tutorial to get you started, but eventually you start developing patterns and everything starts to click. The armbar is part of a throw move called “Arm Break Fire”, which is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 (Right, Left, Left, Throw button -> Circle on PS4 and B on Dreamcast) makes Ryo perform an elbow strike to the ribs; Part 2 (Punch button -> Square on PS4 and X on Dreamcast) makes Ryo grab the opponent’s arm; Part 3 (Punch button + Kick button -> Square+Cross on PS4 and X+A on Dreamcast) makes Ryo execute the final arm lock extension. The full button string is therefore this one - Right, Left, Left, Throw [1] | Punch button [2] | Punch button + Kick button [3]. Inputs must be pressed in order and timing is not super strict, though the move will end prematurely if you take too long to execute the string, or you make a mistake. Say you input Part 1 and 2 correctly but then screw up Part 3 by even a single button, Ryo won’t do the flying arm bar. As for the knee + spinning back kick, are you referring to this combo at 4:25 5:59? The knee strike is an action you can only perform by grabbing the opponent. The button string for grabbing and using the knee attack is this one - Evade button + Throw button [Grab action] | Kick button [Knee strike]. The spinning back kick is called “Brutal Tiger” and comes into two variants. The one I use is the “base” form, but there’s a different form that unlocks once you train the move to “moderate” level. The two versions are very similar and both work for this grab combo. The button string is - Right, Left, Punch button + Kick button. So the full string is Evade button + Throw button [Grab action] | Kick button [Knee strike] | Right, Left, Punch button + Kick button [Brutal Tiger]. The tricky part is grab action, as you can only grab opponents when they’re “vulnerable”, similarly to throw moves. It’s kinda difficult to explain it in words. In the video, I exploit the very end frames of the “standing up” animation, during which enemies are vulnerable to throws (learned that while testing strategies). The time frame is very short, so any sooner or later and the grab will fail. I hope I didn’t misunderstand your questions. Thanks for commenting! 😎

      Hi, the fonts I use are from the Dreamcast version of Shenmue. I don’t remember where I got them from, but you can find them on this thread from the old Shenmue Dojo forums under section “Fonts and Misc”. "Shenmue I Assets Catalogue" from the old Shenmue Dojo forums → www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50118 At 3:52, I photoshopped the “2:32.90” text out of the frame, then recolored it red, then overlayed it on top of the video turning it on and off every 4 (I think?) frames. It’s a pretty common effect, but I did it as a nod to Crash Team Racing, a game I used to do time trials on back in the day.

It’s just a matter of finding the time and patience to go through the process, and of course Pedro needs to chill out and stop dodging Tiger Storm. 🤬 Honestly, when I started this channel my goal was not only to show off the skills I’d developed during my play time, but also inspiring other people to do the same, learn more about Shenmue’s combat system and, even better, start doing their own runs in the 70 Man Battle. Karl is the very first person I met that did exactly what I imagined 4 years ago, going as far as beating my times and getting the record. Yeah, his style is very similar to mine, but we all have to start from somewhere. It could be argued that my style is a copycat's too, seeing as I was inspired by TheKenjitoMaster and afterblue. Now that sub 2:30 has been accomplished, it will be interesting to see where we go from here. As crazy as it sounds, sub 2:25 is hard, but also doable. Judging by how skilled and passionate Karl is, I could see him go for that as the next goal! However, it’s perfectly understandable if he decides to stop for now. Discovering your channel and seeing your skills and times slowly develop to where they are now have been a blast to follow. I’m proud of you buddy! 😎 About Ryo’s model, the thing is there are more than 10 different models for Ryo, which the game uses in a variety of different scenarios (for example, Ryo without his jacket, used when sparring with Fuku-san, or Ryo with his jacket but without shoes, used when walking through home etc.). The infamous passport model actually only contains Ryo’s face and some of the torso (albeit, with incredibly high poly count), while everything else simply doesn't exist (because those parts of the body were never meant to be used and thus shown). With some clever modding, it’s possible to create a new model for Ryo (I can’t do it but other people have succeeded) which uses the passport data and combines it with the default model to create the ultimate Ryo! The problem is almost all of the Dreamcast RAM gets filled just by loading that model, thus causing the game to struggle to load all other data (map, other models, textures, audio and so on) and, in most cases, freeze. The model I use in this video (which is also featured in the image I’ve shared on my drive) is Ryo’s high poly FREE battle model with high poly hands attached. Normally, a low poly variant of Ryo’s would be used in the 70 Man Battle, but nothing bad happened when I forced this "HQ" version to load, so I figured this was the best model I could get to work without making the game lag or, even worse, freeze. 😛

For example, the Wall Glitch tech was something I found by accident in 2020 and have since implemented in the main route we use today. Before that, we used to just fight BOSS 2 and BOSS 3 as normal or with the Demon Drop spam. The main route we use and most of the knowledge do come from other Shenmue runners, (mainly "TheKenjitoMaster" and "afterblue"), who were playing the 70 Man Battle even before Karl and I did. Thus our runs are the result of many people’s knowledge and experience with the game’s combat system. 🧐

Luck played a huge role into this too, as you probably realize how incredibly lucky I got at the end with the double Wall Glitch (so many things could have gone wrong and they didn’t!). I have to be honest and say this run was just a fluke and I could never replicate this strategy again without getting lucky again! 😵 Don’t feel discouraged to keep trying when you feel like it. You have the skill and the knowledge, just like me. I wouldn’t use the double Wall Glitch unless you’re on a bad pace and you want to try your luck. It worked for me this time, but it never worked in the past. 💀 As much as it pains me to say it, all we need is RNG to cooperate and Pedro to go down as quickly as possible, something we have zero control over. @RichardPayne5 6 місяців тому

      @@thatsmekarl5365 Hey Karl, go right ahead if you want to, but honestly, there’s not much to analyze. I just play well and get lucky throughout the run. Pedro’s segment was the crucial moment in the run, as it could have definitely gone a different way and I could have got a sub 2:30 there, but history says otherwise. 😞 I start with Darkside Hazuki… kinda regret not going for Cyclone Kick and hoping to get a lucky Wall Glitch out of it, but I do damage Pedro and defeat the two nearby opponents in-between with Dark Moon, so maybe it was the right play. From there, I try to use Vortex Throw to throw Pedro in the opposite direction, which is where the “best” wall is, but my alignment is off and Ryo performs a grab attempt… luckily, Pedro uses one of his weaker moves and offers me another opening straight after; too bad he decides to dodge that Vortex throw attempt. Then, Ryo target-switches from Pedro to the other guy, resulting in Surplice Slash aiming at the wrong target and me getting hit by the BS Drop Kick… I should have seen that coming, but I didn’t, and lost precious time. At this point, I try to salvage what I can and go for a in-between Cyclone Kick with the intention of hitting both Pedro and his last minion, but I end up only hitting Pedro, while the other guy manages to hit me for just a matter of frames… I counter with Windmill, but I really should have gone for Rain Thrust instead, as Ryo doesn’t recover fast enough for me to block or dodge Pedro’s Drop Kick. Yet another small mistake. Now that only Pedro remains and the run is almost dead, I decide to bait Pedro into the Wall Glitch zone myself. I perform a 180 and somehow dodge Pedro’s Drop Kick (that should have definitely hit me), then bait him near the boundaries and Pedro falls for it. The Wall Glitch setup could have worked, if only Pedro didn’t dodge yet again. That’s where the run truly died. I do end up successfully using the Wall Glitch + Demon Drop strategies, but it was too late. 💀 These are my two cents on what I think is the highlight of this run, for better or worse. 😭 EDIT: Almost forgot. Since getting this 2:01 failed run, I got many sub 2:00 runs, with my new best 66 defeated being a 1:57.66 time! I'm lucky enough and one of the biggest pitfalls is the segment before Pedro also with pedro it's also a big problem if the wrong move like you said in the 2:01 run starts "Dark side hazuki" and everything is messed up.. This helps explain why I found Chai so frustrating, as well as the combat in general. IIRC, one thing I never got the hang of with blocking is that it felt like the block animation prevents Ryo from acting for almost as long as it 'stuns' the enemy, so it was difficult to respond with a move. But maybe I need to only use specific counter moves in that situation, instead of regular attacks...

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5 8 місяців тому

      The combat does take some getting used to, and it doesn’t help that there’s no true practice mode (sparring doesn’t count) to let the player get accustomed with it beforehand. Admittedly, you don’t have much time to strike back when blocking, because Ryo is indeed stuck in the blocking state at first, but usually you’re able to get a move out before the enemy recovers. Counter moves are only available with ducking, and they’re highly recommended as most of them are incredibly OP. Chai is frustrating because he’s an actual threat compared to all the other pushovers Ryo fights throughout Yokosuka. He blocks a lot, dodges a lot, escapes throws at random, has several moves that are difficult to deal with, does high damage very quickly, has an odd hitbox that turns some of Ryo’s strongest moves ineffective/hard to use effectively, and the list goes on. Blocking does work great against him, but the time you have to punish him is more demanding (for some reason). Take too long and there’s a good chance he will block or dodge out of the way. 😬
