I reckon that could be achieved, but only by someone with extensive knowledge and experience on Shenmue modding. The hardest part would be to figure out a way to force the game to trigger these moves, plus doing that without breaking other moves in the process. 😬 I’ve had some success porting existing NPC moves to Ryo’s moveset, but that would always cause other moves to glitch out or straight-up not work anymore, not to mention game crashes (a lot), so I'm still far, far away from achieving a "move restoration" kind of mod. I don't see myself making any more progress on this in the future, but maybe someone more talented could find a way. 🤔
@@RichardPayne5 Wow! thank you for the detailed explanation! I I've always wondered how that worked, well, aside from say, old joker codes back in the day.
That’s right! At the end of the day, Suzuki-sensei and his team decided to recycle as few elements and animations from Virtua Fighter as possible, making Shenmue’s FREE battle system stand out on its own! 👊 OT: I absolutely love your TASes, maina! Used to be a huge Tekken 3 fan as a kid (not a particurarly good player though 😅), so I'm always blown away by your genius when I watch one of your Tekken TAS runs! Keep up the awesome work! 👏
Thank you for commenting, I truly appreciate the kind words! 🙇 Seeing as all these animations had yet to be documented in a video before, I still can’t thank LemonHaze enough for allowing me to use his animation-viewing tool! Before that, I was glitching and hex-editing the game with little to no results, so this video was really only possible thanks to his knowledge and kindness. I’m currently working on a Part 2 of this video. I can’t tell when it’s going to be finished, but I hope it’s going to be just as interesting. 🙏
A fascinating showcase. Ryo's spoken parts are also hilarious! It is cool to see mouko-kohazan ["fierce tiger running up a mountain"], which is the move that the martial arts director for Shenmue mentioned in an early interview I translated recently on the blog. He said "The famous technique called mouko-kohazan is also included, almost in its original form. It will be a little while before we'll be able to use it in-game, though".
@@RichardPayne5 Yes, I suppose at the time they might even have been thinking of including it for a chapter later than 2. Would have been neat to see it used in Shenmue 3!
It was a pleasure! After witnessing these animations for the first time, I knew I had to find a way to share them with the community. Took me 2 years, but it was totally worth it! While “Byakko Soushouda” didn’t make the cut in the first game, Ryo does learn a slightly similar move in the sequel in the form of the “Twin Palm Thrust”. 👊
Interesting video! I remember LemonHaze talking about these animations, It's nice to see someone making a video on them. It's no surprise that there are so many VF3 leftover animations considering Shenmue I and II were built on top of VF3tb's engine. That's a lot of kicks at 4:40 to 6:28 some backturned kicks from VF and lot of rising kicks (the ones you can do while getting up in VF) The Knee move at 7:21 is shared by various characters since VF1 until VF4Evo, the characters that used that knee animation were: Jeffry, Wolf, Jacky, Sarah, and even Akira for his 1 Frame knee. Currently the only character that has that animation in latest game "Ultimate Showdown" is Jeffry. Also this move shows up in both Shenmue I and II as "Against Cascade" but the animation we see here is only used for the Shenmue II version of the move. I wonder if Shenmue I and II could also have scrapped VF3 animations inside theirs files, there were a good number of moves in Beta versions of Virtua Fighter 3 which didn't make it into the final game, it could be possible some of those moves ended up in Shenmue some used and others unused. I wonder if other characters might have unused animations aswell, Master Baihu moveset's is pretty much just VF3 Lau, anyway nice video! I can't wait to see part 2!
Interesting observations, thank you for pointing these facts out! I think you’re the first person acknowledging Against Cascade’s animation changes between Shenmue I and II. Which version is better is up to debate, but Shenmue II’s version looks indeed closer to how it’s portrayed in VF3. This video was based on Shenmue I HD only, so there’s a good chance there might be more unused VF3 animations hidden inside Shenmue II HD and all the OG versions released for Dreamcast and Xbox. Problem is, accessing those leftovers is going to be next to impossible without a proper tool being built for it, so we can only speculate on that for now. Regarding NPC characters having unused animations, I did find a handful of well hidden, unused moves and poses meant for Guizhang, just days before publishing this video. This, and that random back low kick being usable if you mod Fuku-san’s moveset on Ryo (which I also found out by accident just two months ago…) tells me there may be more moves we do not yet know the existence of, waiting to be rediscovered! 🤞
3:36 Would have loved to learn “Unseen Elbow Strike” that’s a badass move right there 😁 4:14 - shun di? Lol 6:03 - don’t know how enemies would have dealt with this move 😂 Amazing work Richard! 🙂
Thank you Richard! 🙇 Yeah, that badass elbow strike is definitely one of the highlights of the video, it looks so cool, I just wish they'd included it somehow. By the way, I’m not even sure it was supposed to be a hand move too… it might have actually been a throw move, but I couldn’t find any “knockdown” animation connected to it. Judging by the stance Ryo takes at the very end of the animation though, we can safely speculate it was a move meant for him! Nice catch at 4:14! I wanted to include that “kick” somewhere in the video, until I eventually added it to that segment as a funny twist! Totally agree at those back kicks at 6:03. Having them as an option to attack foes behind Ryo would have been a blessing, especially in the 70 Man Battle time attack mode. I guess they do look a little too OP! 😅
I think some moves have "ERROR" in their name since they seem broken to some extent Like at 5:06 for instance, if you advance the video frame by frame, you'll see that Ryo's hand ends up next to his other one, going through his chest Same goes for 5:36 where many things happen, Ryo's position moves for a frame/a few frame being the most noticeable one
The broken look on some of the animations may have been caused by me freezing Ryo’s position in place (otherwise he’d have constantly moved out of the picture during recording) and forcing them to play out of their intended scenario, hence the weird body clippings. The glitchy warp effect at 5:36 may be a sign of an animation scrapped early on in development, which would make sense considering most are VF leftovers. As for why some moves are internally called “error”, I still wonder about that. These error-flagged motions usually cause the game to crash instantly, so I was surprised to find a few, like the one you pointed out at 5:06, which still worked.
@@RichardPayne5 Oh I see, interesting Hmm, wonder if they were broken in an earlier build then fixed for some reason, it's what makes the most sense to me at least, following that logic Side note: Discovered your channel only recently, really amazing work

Tommy knows karate? I always thought he was just throwing random punches and kicks, never gave me the impression he was proficient. I can kinda see how some of these animations would remind you of Vice City though. 😂
@@NiCoNiCoNiCola Maybe so, but to be honest I always felt the GTA series was never meant to be taken seriously.
