Shenmue Easter Egg - Ryo & Nozomi: the fearsome duo [Combo Video]

  • Ryo and Nozomi are tired of bullies harassing innocent people and decide to take matters in their own hands. Enoki and Nagashima fail to realize just what kind of trouble they’re getting themselves into, as the Hazuki duo teaches them a harsh lesson they won't be forgetting any time soon.
    All sillyness aside, I finally decided to try this easter egg for myself. At first I was kind of skeptical about it, but I had to change my mind when I got it to work with little to no effort; and moreover, to my surprise, the fight itself plays out so differently that I ended up enjoying it way more than I anticipated, so much so I thought I would compile the most hilarious moments and the best 'duo' combos into a video (I also added a full showcase of the FREE battle before the actual "combo video" to give you a general idea of how it plays out. Skip at 2:02 if you want to get straight to the montage).
    If you’re looking for context, in 2019 Shenmue fan ‘nullpo’ discovered an easter egg left hidden inside the game’s code since release, located on Disc 1. During the first optional FREE battle against Enoki and Nagashima at Sakuragaoka park, if you input a specific combination of buttons during the first 8 seconds or so of the cutscene, Nozomi will join you in the actual fight, using a (albeit kinda limited) version of the Hazuki Style of martial arts. It’s actually more complicated than that, so I’ll leave you an excellent article written by Switch of the Phantom River Stone blog, where everything is explained in much more detail. www.phantomriv...
    As I hinted at before, *Nozomi is pretty much a Ryo/Fukuhara clone*, but she doesn’t actually use the entire moveset. She will spam moves such as Elbow Assault, Surplice Slash, Demon Drop and even Arm Break Fire but, for instance, will never make use of Sleeve Strike, Thunder Kick, Katana Mist Slash, Windmill, Tiger Storm and the list goes on. I wonder why that happens… Maybe she’s programmed to only use those moves? On the other hand she is great at blocking/evading throw moves, as she will always block Enoki’s headbutt grab (it’s actually a throw move, as far as the game is concerned).
    *EDIT: After checking the game’s files, it turns out Nozomi’s moveset is not just Ryo’s moveset (EN_RYOU.BIN) or even Fuku-san’s (EN_FUKU.BIN), but a completely different one that’s only used for this specific fight, called "EN_ZAKO6.BIN". Zako, written 雑魚 in Japanese, can mean “small fish” or “unimportant person”, and it’s a name developers also picked for some of the sailors/mad angels movesets, which leads me to believe whoever was responsible for this easter egg fight created Nozomi’s Hazuki style in a hurry and just called it “ZAKO6” as opposed to “HRSK”, the ID that’s usually used for Nozomi in the files.
    ZAKO6 indeed has a lot of moves missing compared to RYOU and FUKU, but it also features moves only Ryo can use, such as Arm Break Fire and Demon Drop, which means it’s not just a simple copypaste job…
    Why did they not just give Nozomi Ryo's moveset, you ask? I modded it on Nozomi to see if it would cause any problems, and no, it works perfectly! Maybe they initially had bigger plans on her style, but then dropped the idea and left the moveset incomplete? I guess we will never know. 🤔*
    Speaking of Enoki and Nagashima, these guys are normally pushovers and go down in a couple of blows, but it seems the game was programmed to greatly increase their health as soon as the easter egg is triggered.
    I haven't exactly tested how much health they supposedly have, but I would say they can last as long as Pedro. Not bad for a couple of brainless bullies.
    As for Nozomi, I wasn't able to get an idea on how much health she has. Sometimes she seems to be really durable, but often times she won't last more than a minute if you don't support her, which makes me think she has as much health as Shingo (Mad Angels' first boss). Pretty impressive nonetheless!

      @@-xxippoxx- Oh yeah, absolutely! Before that though, I’d have to play through the game again on Dreamcast, in order to benefit from the better, original combat experience. Don't get me wrong, the HD release is great and all, but the fact that most combos don’t work at all really kills it for me. In an alternate reality Ryo & Nozomi would both pursue Lan Di, since she can fight and Lan Di is getting in the way of her relationship with Ryo ;p

      The easter egg made me wish FREE battles with allies backing you up were a thing (if we exclude the 70 Man Battle of course). It all works surprisingly well and makes for some epic and chaotic fights!
      Shenmue was indeed ahead of its time.
      Oh yeah, you won’t regret your time! Takes a while to set up but it’s definitely worth it! Just a few notes for when you're going to give it a shot:
      First of all, the first QTE with Enoki and Nagashima (at the point when you’re looking for Chinese people) must not be missed, otherwise this fight won’t trigger, even if you meet the other prerequisites (I found out the hard way, I somehow missed the QTE event and had to restart the game lol). Secondly, I suggest you write down how much you have fed the kitten, so that you know when you have reached 500 points. Feeding it 5 sliced fish ensures you'll have a kitten's affinity score above 500 (I gave it 4 sliced fish, some milk and a couple of dried fish all at once and still met the condition). Lastly, don’t get discouraged if Nozomi doesn’t appear on the first try: the button combination is very precise and you have to be very fast at inputting the whole string, otherwise the game will consider it invalid…
      Hopefully this will help. Good luck!

    I actually like to think theoretically that Nozomi actually DOES know how to kick ass since she frequents the dojo and more than likely Iwao would give her pointers and she would train to get into Ryo's mindset on martial arts & discipline.

      That’s what I like to think too! 😅 Here's a random fun fact on the moveset Nozomi uses in this fight.
      In the game’s files, Nozomi’s moveset is actually not just Ryo’s moveset (EN_RYOU.BIN) or even Fuku-san’s (EN_FUKU.BIN), but a completely different one that’s only used for this specific fight, called EN_ZAKO6.BIN. Zako, written 雑魚 in Japanese, can mean “small fish” or “unimportant person”, and it’s a name developers also picked for some of the sailors/mad angels movesets, which leads to believe whoever was responsible for this easter egg fight created Nozomi’s Hazuki style in a hurry and just called it “ZAKO6” as opposed to “HRSK”, the ID that’s usually used for Nozomi in the files.
      Compared to Ryo’s and Fuku-san’s movesets, ZAKO6 has a lot of moves missing, such as Sleeve Strike, Thunder Kick, Rising Flash, Tiger Storm and so on. However, ZAKO6 has moves such as Arm Break Fire and Demon Drop unlocked (not even Fuku-san has those!), which means it’s not just a straight copypaste job…
      I wonder why they didn’t just give Nozomi Ryo’s moveset, instead of making a new one just for her?... I guess we will never know. 🤔

    I might be misremembering, but I recall Nozomi fighting along with me in this battle, but also taking on the guys by myself. Maybe I found a secret and didn't even realize it? I kind of remember a cat at the beginning that I didn't feed it right, so I restarted just to feed it. I don't know if that might have something to do with it? That and making sure I replayed Quick Time Events. I tried to be thorough with this game as much as I could, I liked it so much. My only regret was keeping the good picture Nozomi took and letting her keep the bad one. I misunderstood the option.

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5  Рік тому +1

      I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think it would have been possible to trigger this easter egg by mistake. Getting past the first QTE with Enoki and Nagashima is simple enough, but raising the kitten’s affinity to 500+ is not something I’d expect anyone to know how to do (it’s a hidden stat), especially at the start of the game. The worst part though is the long button combination you must input right at the start of the Sakuragaoka cutscene, which would be next to impossible to do by chance, considering the strict timing and the specific nature of it.
      About the photo with Nozomi, I think the “canon” choice is Ryo keeps the one when they’re close and Nozomi the one when they’re apart. I say that because if you don’t carry over your Shenmue I save in Shenmue II, Ryo will always have that version of the photo in his inventory. In a way, you could say you picked the “right” option. 😛

      @@RichardPayne5 Unless there's an alternate way to do it that I stumbled upon, I might be misremembering. Seeing these videos are triggering some dormant memories. Good memories. I remember finding that hidden slit in the dojo where the sword goes way before there was any mention of it.
      Yeah, in the Xbox version I'm carrying the one where we're apart, but I picked the one where we're together originally. She had such a sad look on her face when she got it. Though she seemed to always be sad or crying in the cutscenes.

      @RichardPayne5  Рік тому +1

      @@atothed84 I think Nozomi's reaction will always be the same, no matter which photo you pick; the same applies for all the other cutscenes with her. Even if you spend time talking to her and trigger all optional scenes and conversations, nothing will actually change in the end.
      That may be because Ryo and Nozomi are both aware a relationship between them would just not be feasible at that point due to life circumstances, so they try their best to repress their feelings in order to make it less painful when they’re eventually forced to part their separate ways. 🤧

    • @RichardPayne5
      @RichardPayne5  Рік тому

      Hi there, no, this is just the Dreamcast version emulated on Flycast (Dreamcast emulator). Afaik I don't think there's a mod which replaces the HD font with the DC one unfortunately. 😞
      Specifically, the one featured in the video is the old fan-made "Kogami" undub version, which lets you play the original Dreamcast game with English subtitles and Japanese dub (not possible in any of the official DC releases), but had a couple of oversights and bugs here and there. Nowadays, there's an even better undub by the name of "Shenmue Undub: Definitive Edition", which is the de facto best version of Shenmue I on Dreamcast (if you prefer the Japanese dub over the English one of course).

      I could do that if you want, but there’s not much you can do to make the easter egg easier to access. You just need to follow PRS’s guide ( www.phantomriverstone.com/2019/08/nozomi-shows-off-her-fighting-skills.html ), meet the requirements and hope you’re able to get the button string right in the little time you have at the start of the cutscene. Don’t be surprised if it ends up taking 50+ attempts, that’s how many it took me to get it working. If you’re playing the PC version, you could in theory modify the binary or use a modded save file, but that’s something I’ve never looked into.
      Hope it helps for the time being :)
