Hondo ii budget Les Paul copy 1980 Samick Factory
A bit of fettling has got this old boy up and running and playing very nicely. The Hondo's have an interesting history and anything named after a John Wayne film must be ok.

I like these. No frills, no nonsense and, more importantly, no sodding push/pull pots. Good honest rock machine with a maple neck and quality 61 Zebra Classic pickups. Get one while they're (relatively) cheap.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH the Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute (2013 - 2015). Even Gibson could've made this barely different nomenclature a little easier. Anyway, here's the slightly more upmarket version of a 50's Tribute.

They went Va banque when they made this thing. Les Paul was a really clever innovator and an astounding guitarist. He invented loads of the tech we take for granted these days. You've got to hand it to Gibson for trying out weird things. I bet they lost a bundle on these.

Amazing how the old, olive green, raffia cabs sound so classic. The sculpted feet were a great edition. They lifted the cab off the floor enough to cut out any excessive bass frequencies that the older 'floor standing' version suffered from. Version 1 came in either pink or light blue. I always muffle mine with dirty underpants and socks if at home. The negative side is that when they get too hot they start to emit a nasty odour.

Hi Gary, first of all what a wonderful sounding guitar, I love everything about the sound of this one. I thought the clean tones were stunning. When you have the gain cranked up they all sound fantastic but I always think the clean tones really let you know what is going on with an instrument. I'm just not a fan of the look of Zebra pickups. The thing is every time you demo and instrument with them on I always really like the sound they make. If I could get a guitar tone as good as that on my little recordings nobody clicks on I be a happy man. Of course to do that I'd need your fingers too and that wouldn't be so easy to find for sale on Ebay.

    • @FoxysGuitarShow
      @FoxysGuitarShow 2 дні тому

Hi Rod hahahahaha :-) If I thought I could get a few quid for them they'd be on eBay tomorrow! I'm considering letting the other kidney go at some point, too. So, you raise an interesting point here. Firstly, if you like the sound of the 61 and 57 Zebra Classics but you're not keen on the look of them, you can pop chrome or gold pickup shrouds on them - they pop straight on and can be fixed in place with either solder or kitchen sealant (really). Sound - wise, I've been using a little Blackstar ID Core 40 for the last several years and I like it at least as much as my Vox AC30 from the 70's. I've also got an ID Core 20 that I paid £50 for and it's just as good. The onboard effects are amazing. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, I don't have the skills to start removing pickups and doing stuff like that. I've been really spoilt that way. I had a good friend who I'd known since I was about 12 who was the local Guitar Doctor. He did various mods for me over the years and back in the days when I played for a living every 6 months or so I'd just ask for "A clean bill of health" and he'd do whatever my guitar needed after going in and out of a tour bus 100 times. Every guitar I bought from the 70s until about ten years ago he'd set up for me. Sadly he's no longer with us so these days I just have to do what I can. Gear wise, when I was gigging I had a Mesa Boogie studio 20. I don't even own an amp these days. I use a gizmo called a "Cube Baby" and connect it to my PC via a little interface thing and it records really well. A night in the pub would cost more than a Cube Baby. There are plenty of demos of them on YT here's a link to the demo that made me decide to get one. In fact I have two just to make things future proof. ua-cam.com/video/8eicIIv7X5o/v-deo.html

Hi Glen :-) The original 2007 series were a collaboration between Gibson and Baldwin. Not much of a collaboration to be fair as Gibson own the Baldwin name. Anyway, they had the bright idea of making some student instruments and to keep the costs down everything was done in China. As it goes, Maestro is historically the name Gibson used on their vibrato systems. The 2017 models don't bear the Baldwin name so strictly speaking it's a Chinese Gibson. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hello from the USA! I found a white one at a pawn shop for $150USD. It started out life as white, but it's yellowed to antique white now. It needed a good cleaning and setup, new strings, etc, you know, basic stuff. I've got some Hipshot locking tuners I may drop in to it. Bridge is OK, but I'm thinking of putting an ABR into it. But for now, I'm having a great time playing it as I found it, and my guitar buddies love it. It's different, a little unique, and I love having a little piece of guitar history. And it came with a Road Runner molded hard case, which I looked up at Guitar Center, and they sell for $150. So, free guitar? I'll call it a win. Thanks for the video, I always enjoy your reviews...lg

HI Gary, Nice finish on that axe. Looks like it plays nicely. Looks a little like Mick Jones one in early clash songs / videos too. Have a great weekend.

Hi Peter :-) I just had a look at some Mick Ones images and you're quite right. It also looks like he's still got the same guitar, too. Yes, I love the finish, too. Have a great weekend too. Cheers, Gary :-)

That's a good looking guitar Gary. I like binding on a dot neck and the use of a lightning bar (providing it intonates). Love the way you always coordinate the guitar strap to the guitar 🙂

Hi Chris :-) You are the first person to have noticed the strap/guitar thing hahahahahaha. Well, you wouldn't got out in a black suit and wear brown shoes, would you? Although my dad did - he had sartorial dyslexia! I have to say that these guitars look a million dollars and the intonation is as good as a fretted instrument can be. Well worth the money providing you're prepared to put a bit of work into it. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Mick and thanks :-) Yes, I love the finish! It's a beautiful cherry sunburst. You seem to get an awful lot of guitar for your money with these and they can all be set up to play nicely with a bit of work. Take care too mate. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, here's another one I would have jumped on about the time I went for the Harley Benton. It looks good and sounds nice so what's not to like. I need to get to my local emporium and have a noodle on some of these things. You said a post or two ago that the LP 100th birthday models had quite a chunky neck. It's not a lot of use to ask how much difference that might make I need to have a strum and see for myself. Trouble is at the moment with a budget in October of about a thousand pretty much all you see in at that kind of price point in the shops are the Modern Lite Les Pauls that are getting discounted all over the place and they're not really on my radar. Here's today's daft question, the neck profile on my HB gold top with P90s suits me just fine so how would that compare with a "Studio" or the 100th birthday model?

Hi Rod :-) I like the neck question. The HB necks I've played feel like a chunky 50's profile. The Les Paul's I've played with a similar neck is the LPJ with the black pickup shrouds that look a bit like EMG's - I think from 2013. The Les Paul 100's don't have a chunky neck and what I always say is they have more 'real estate' on them as they're a bit wider. I like the 2015 models for the brass zero fret nut that's 100% adjustable with the turn of an Allen key and although the necks are wider and flatter (which makes vibrato action on the High E miles easier) they're actually pretty slinky. Not like an Ibanez Wizard or SG but slimmer than a Standard. If I were in your position I'd be off down the local music shop trying a bunch out. A thousand quid will get you a used Studio with change for a nice amp - even in a store I should think and you can't beat sitting one on your knee and falling for it. Cheers, Gary :- )

Cheers Gary, been a while since I saw one of those. The tuners are proper gotoh(unbranded). Pickups were wound in the Gibson factory, and came once again(unbranded). These were great guitars to be fair. The funny thing is, LP Juniors started life as (entry level) student-model guitars back in the 1950's. To the gibbo perfectionist, these weren't true gibson's, but honestly, yes they were. I used to work at a biscuit factory in the 90's, at one point in the night we did blue riband choc wafer biscuit, an hour later we took out the blue riband wrappers and replaced them with very cheap wafer wrappers, same wafer/caramel & chocolate etc. Are you with me??.😉. Don't be fooled by these guitars, they are absolute bargains..Not much time were spent on these guitars, that's why they were very cheap..Made basically with offcuts from their woods, ie the scarf joint in the neck..You can also upgrade these very well indeed, if you wished to do so. And yes, they had a maple cap. Much love..👏👏👌

Hi David :-) Wow - thanks for the info! Yes, I get the analogy about the rebranded chocolate bars. They reckon that some supermarket 'own brands' are proper brands in generic packaging. So it certainly seems that these were worth the money for the part alone. I was hoping it was a maple cap so thanks for that :-) Cheers, Gary :-)
