DT Swiss 240 Ratchet DEG Deepdive
I’ve just spent a staggering 45 hours pulling apart, measuring, researching and comparing the 240 Ratchet DEG hub to its DT Swiss siblings so you don't have to.
All of this hub info including endcap matrix and axle charts lives on our website at www.wheelworks.co.nz/dt-swiss-240-ratchet-deg-deepdive/

I have seen the hub flanges crack free of the hub body, ratchet rings cracking and getting stuck, pawl springs cracking and of course, axle failures. • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels 2 місяці тому

      @trentvlak After some of the EXP issues we say I was working on a way of measuring both freehub body drag and bearing drag, but honestly it's slipped down the priority list of projects. When the ultra low-drag Pro5s showed up I really wanted to resurrect that project but haven't :-( So without measuring, yes there is more freehub body drag. This is consistent with general physics that almost any 'type' of freehub will increase drag with more engagement points as you've got more things touching, more often. The DEGs larger diameter ratchet rings will also be contributing to this. One interesting thing about ratchet style hubs that I did notice with my testing is that the drag flattens out at a certain speed as the ratchets essentially skip over each other and don't have a chance to fully engage. Maybe one day I'll get that freehub body drag system up and running -Tristan

    1:20 at this point you do a undercut (din 509), radius of 0.3mm should be enough to make it a lot stronger - I wonder why this is not done properly, if I understand this correctly, this gets educated in the first semester of mechanical engineering studies - I learned it in a side thingy in electrical engineering, so I am not 100% sure, but I really think that these are mistakes on basic levels I really rather use DT Swiss hubs were you know that they get these things right anyways, because othervise nobody would use their parts as oem parts

      The new Industry Nine Solix hubs have a very generous radius on that part of the axle...looks larger than 0.3mm to my eye but I don't any way of accurately measuring that. Interesting they went that direction on the Solix rather than the 'stress riser kit' on the Hydra -Tristan

    Great video, personally I'm unconvinced they're worth it (but I'm more of a "if it ain't broken don't fix it" guy) To me these loss DTs main selling point for: interchangeability & reliability (to be proven). Great video. I wasn't aware there's a bearing life compromise on the EXP hubs. I have three sets of EXP hubs, with one set still new. On one hub I could feel a click or two while turning the end cap with my fingers. Not the usual notchy bearing feel. The 'click' goes away when I apply pressure on the end caps while turning it. Do you know if this is an early sign of a bearing failure? This is on a front hub (240) so presumably it has nothing to do with the EXP design. Thank you.

    First class video and information. No annoying muzak and stupid cartoon clips. It looks as though many Chinese brands are taking advantage of the expired DT ratchet patent and making improvements as well. Ratchets (up to 64t) are now available based on the initial design but have no shoulder providing a better spring interface and use of a slightly longer parallel spring/s. Some are using a single spring similar to the EXP but the inner ratchet is still held within a ring nut and as such both ratchets move with the axis of the axle. They also seem to stick to the original 6902 bearings (15x28x7) rather than the smaller diameter 15x26x7. By continuing with a two piece ratchet as per the original design, it makes it easier to replace them because as you say it is a wearable and as such a replaceable part. Some of them recommend a 500Km service interval for their ratchets.

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels 2 місяці тому

      I think having both ratchets floating means they deal better with axle flex, contaminants, and tolerance issues. OneUps new hub uses a single floating ratchet and looks really well-made so that will be an interesting one to keep an eye on. -Tristan

    • @johnlesoudeur3653
      @johnlesoudeur3653 2 місяці тому

      @@WheelworksHandcraftedWheels Having already looked at One Up's hub information BOTH of the ratchets are floating. The "ring nut" is machined directly into the hub body (7075 T6) so is an integrated design. Bearings are 61902 so are 28mm dia. and are both driven out via the non-drive side. They use a 44t ratchet but ATM do not make a centre lock version and they require J bend spokes.

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels 2 місяці тому

      @johnlesoudeur3653 Both ratchets are 'floating' but the one in the hub shell has no spring so will always be pushed back into the hub. The freehub body ratchet has a spring on it so will have far more lateral movement. The only downside of this design is that the steel ratchet which is inside the hub shell will eventually wear the hub shell, although time will tell how long that takes I'll try and get some info up about the One Up - Tristan

    • @johnlesoudeur3653
      @johnlesoudeur3653 2 місяці тому

      @@WheelworksHandcraftedWheels Yes that would be good because it can be argued that although the inner ratchet is "floating" it is pretty much static, the outer ratchet does all the moving. I have an Elite Wheels Pro hub and they use a similar design but use use an Al alloy ring nut. No discernable wear and no issues.

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels 2 місяці тому

      @@johnlesoudeur3653 (with regards to the OneUp hub, not the 240 DEG in this video) the outer ratchet slides side-to-side to allow engagement, however the inner ratchet is still loose in the hub shell and will still rock and move as the hub flexes. This will almost certainly lead to wear on the hub shell...the long term questions are (a) how long does it take to occur (b) does it affect the hubs performance (c) does it matter ? I'm sure OneUp have done fatigue testing on this, both in the lab and real-world. Interestingly the early Hugi hubs, and I *think* even the DT Swiss branded ones, which used a 10mm steel axle only had one sliding ratchet ring and one spring. Great analysis. As someone who spent 30 plus years in industrial maintenance issues related to machine shop work on say pump shafts and failures related to stress risers from sharp transitions were addressed by changing the machining to eliminate those sharp edged cuts. Since most cartridge bearings do not have sharp edges but have slightly radiuses edges simply matching axle radius to the bearing edge radius should make a difference. Requires mod to machining not sticking a washer in the critical location.

    Interesting video! The dimensional differences are smaller than I expected. I am looking into a hand made wheelset to replace my stock wheels, as I am a heavy rider (108kg). I don't break wheels often, but most issues I have had with my mountain bikes are things like broken spokes, bent axles or out-of-wack freehubs. I've rarely had rim damage though - likely in part due to running relatively high pressures to support my weight. As I ride mostly XC and trail, with the very occasional bike park lap, I am looking mostly at the lighter end of the spectrum, so probably XM481 with maybe an EX511 on the rear. Also, having a lot of red color accents on my bike, the DT swiss logo would complement this very well 😂

      The 481 / 511 combo is one we use a lot. If you're riding more technical trails then a 511 / 541 combo would be worth looking at as well for your weight, although if you don't typically have issues denting rims then the 481 / 511 should be fine. One nice thing about this range of rim is their ERD is close-enough that you can rebuild a wheel with a heavier duty rim if the light one doesn't stand up -Tristan

      Durability is always tough with a new product...we really need a year of actual use in the field to see issues pop up -TT

    Thoughts on durability & ease of service compared to exp and dt swiss classics (not sure if that's the correct name, referring to the models which have springs on both sides)

    Great Video, I'm interested in what the finish of the rim is like. I have EX1700's off a Transition Spire Carbon and the rims(mostly the back) are cosmetically terrible, it must be from sealant and lube, but nothing will clean them up, drives me nuts. Do the FR541 have more of a gloss finish? Cheers

      All of the modern rims that use the PHR nipple washer (ie: not the ones with visible silver eyelets) use the same matte finish. Generally we've found it to be pretty durable and still look good after lube, sealant, dirt etc. Do you have any photos? -Tristan

    I am running shimano ultegra 11 speed group set. Planning to buy a new wheelset shimano duraace 9270 and shimano says that this wheelset is only compatible with 12 speed. Can I use it with my existing 11 speed ultegra group set?

      No...Shimano have decided to make the Ultegra and DuraAce wheels not backwards-compatible with 11 speed cassettes. They're the only company (that I'm aware of) who does this so wheels from another company (such as us!) will be fine -Tristan

    Bruh... I wouldn't call 9g off the axle a "massive weight savings"

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels 3 місяці тому

      Going from 31.7g to 22.6 is a 28% weight saving...while 9g isn't huge in the context of the whole bike it's a considerable amount on such a small item -TT

    These would be great with 1)steel rims, for better compliance and durability than carbon, the weight should be mitigated by the virtually weightless cord spokes. 2)electric hub wheels, lots of compliance to protect the motor, which is great because hub driven bikes should be hardtails anyway, otherwise the wheel flys everywhere on the swing arm like grandpa jogging without a jockstrap. They are the lightest spokes on the market, regardless of the compliance, not anymore expensive than anything else if you lace the wheel yourself, and Berd is a solid American company.

    Has anyone found statistically which brands of tires cause problems? the rims can be measured to the nearest cent when they come out of the mold and there is a precise common standard to be respected. for tyres, on the contrary, there is no standard yet, the hookless coupling tolerance is the most important aspect to avoid these dangers ( second one 80s vintage pressures at 8 atm) a well-known Italian cotton rubber declared hl compatible goes on a rim with just one hand, it will clearly come off with the same ease or worse after use, same for some continental years 2020-21 now modified and within very tight, suitable tolerances. circumferences of tyre rings were measured with differences of up to 1.5 cm in total! how can we talk about a system that should be abandoned without a coupling rule? as long as tire manufacturers have differences beyond the conceivable, system safety will not be proposed. 15 years ago the same MTB route, now standardized although without the push of common rules.

      don't forget that rims will shrink in circumference slightly when the tyres are inflated, but as you say no where near as much as the tyres variability -TT
