    This is EXACTLY what I needed to know. My new 12 speed ultegra will be here in December and I wanted to swap my ENVE wheels from my 11 speed DuraAce. Thanks for this!

    Ok - so the reason landed on this is because my 11speed freehub would not engage with the threaded cap after all the gears were on and I wanted to be sure 11 and 12 speed freehubs truly were compatilble as I'd heard. All the issues covered in this video I found to be mostly common sense. Just install the cassette in the order it comes in the package, right? In my case an extra spacer had been left on the inside of the freehub body from the 11spd cassette. Removed it and oila - perfeto.

      @Bultish 4 місяці тому

      Almost the same here, I bought a shop groupset (comes in brown bags instead of shiny boxes) and the cassette had three spacers, all different thickness. how many did you use 😄

    • @obikedog
      @obikedog 4 місяці тому +2

      @@Bultish Speaking of my own experience with Shimano Ultegra 11spd and Dura-Ace 12 - All the spacers for the given cassette were used. If installing an 11spd cassette there is an "extra" spacer that goes on first, against the flange of the freehub. A 12 spd cassette does not have this. That extra spacer is what was inadvertently left on the freehub when I swapped wheels from 11 - 12 speed cassettes.

    I am running shimano ultegra 11 speed group set. Planning to buy a new wheelset shimano duraace 9270 and shimano says that this wheelset is only compatible with 12 speed. Can I use it with my existing 11 speed ultegra group set?

      No...Shimano have decided to make the Ultegra and DuraAce wheels not backwards-compatible with 11 speed cassettes. They're the only company (that I'm aware of) who does this so wheels from another company (such as us!) will be fine -Tristan

  • @rcg9573
    @rcg9573 Рік тому +1

    The new 12 speed cassette can be run on 11 speed wheels, however the new 12 speed Dura Ace wheels are incompatible with 11 speed cassettes for those who are currently running 11 speed Shimano group sets and wanted to upgrade to the new Dura Ace C36 12 speed wheels on their 11 speed drivetrains. Intentionally designed incompatibility by Shimano once again. :-)

      There's good reason behind this design. That hub has been compatible with a lot of cassettes for a very long time. Totally fair to not keep it indefinitely for an improvement at the high end.

    Okay, thank you! I do have a specific detail question. I run a Dura Ace 9 speed mounted on a 2003 Trek 5900. I'm planning on switching to a mechanical 11 speed cassette with the largest cog being a 34. Considering the important point, the 16 tooth cog, if I change the free hub (maybe that's not needed), can I consider the 12 speed option? The bike measures 130mm in the rear and has rim brakes. Thanks for any guidance.

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels  11 місяців тому

      You can use this tool to see what freehub body you need: www.wheelworks.co.nz/what-freehub-body-do-i-need/
      Your 2003 era bike is probably HG35mm. You should be able to install an 11 speed cassette with a 34t large cog on it.

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
      @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels  3 роки тому

      I'll let you know: I'll be using the Quarq D9100 powermeter and 9100 chainrings when my groupset arrives. Apparently the bolt-circle is the same but the chainrings are not interchangeable because of the way they fit around the spider. -Tristan

      @@simonacker We didn't have a huge amount of time this morning but my understanding is that the chain inner-width is similar and that you can use the 11 speed chainrings with the 12 speed chain. I’m running an ultegra 11 speed mechanical groupset with rim brakes and rotor 52/36 cranks. I’d like to upgrade to SRAM 12 speed Earp FD, RD, and shifters along with sram rim brakes. I don’t think my rear wheel’s free hub can be changed for a sram XDR though to fit a 12 speed sram cassette. Could I use a shimano 12 speed cassette in this case and if so would it be better to run a shimano or sram 12 speed chain? Thanks!

    • @WheelworksHandcraftedWheels
