In the UK, Aug 2024, it's Alibre ATOM is around £160 to buy the current version from the official UK VAR ( value added reseller) and additionally ( but optional) £70 yearly if you want support for technical questions and upgrades which is always recommended especially if there's training included - maybe not as that's one reason VAR's exist, to add on services and to be of service to their customers. VAT on all at 20% to be added. In day's of old, if you missed a years support, the VAR could ask you for back payment if wanting to upgrade to the latest version - i.e going back on support. I do not know what the policy is so check with the local supplier. It's possible that in 3+ years, you'd just buy another current version only which I think you should factor that in somehow to making your decision. MOST IMPORTANTLY, does it really do everything you want and need? Alibre ATOM is the base software offering. Once you bought it, you OWN it forever and usually, you don't have the right of resale- please check with the VAR your rights!
There is no way to resize imported SVG
lol, Alibre in my country is like R$2.500 + updates anually. what is alot for someone that just want to create things for hobby.
There are plenty of options in the market. It's about finding one you like, you want to use and is capable of doing what you want it to.
I've been trying to work out which CAD application to spend hundreds of hours learning for a new start up..and it's looking like Alibre
That's great. Remember, it's important to find a cad program you are comfortable using, just as much as the features the application has. Good luck
@@IQWorkshop Thanks. For the bulk of what I need Alibre looks like a good fit. Alibre + Rhino's Grasshopper is what I really need, but to start with Alibre will get me past the first stages. All the best.
CATIA v5 still rules the world for this reason: one time pay*, you have the files, you can run disconnected from internet. Tha caveat si the initial price, and today you have to be creative in justification for catia v5 to distribuitors as they try to push 3d experience platform and catia v5 is not officially sold.. but for select clients V5 up to date 2023 and up is available to buy. *you theoretically have to pay for updates and maintenance. but if you don't you just sit with what you have.
Alibre Atom is CAD hobbyist level at very low cost. I can't believe you mention CATIA v5 in a post on this video even as an example why CATIA rules the world : 'One time pay...' if that were true, that lowest cost wins all, then there would be no PTC / CREO and no Siemens/ NX and all the other mid tiers such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, SolidEdge would also not exist.
can you tell us where to get the radius gauge please?
I make these but currently out of stock, so will be made on demand
Ive been using alibre atom3d, for about 6 months now. And i love it, the workflow is a little different from say fusion 360, but it does what i need it to do as a hobbyist. Soon tho i will be upgrading to the next tier to get more features, but joko is great at explaining how to use the fearures on their alibre channel
Wait, Whats that Green thing do besides Show a photo of you? Do you have a Project video of it?
Maybe sometime soon ....
@@IQWorkshop Oh Can't Wait.
As of version 28, you still have to model 3d printable threads yourself. Not that it is that hard, but I it obviously takes a lot longer to create a 3d printable threaded bolt or nut in Alibre than it does in F360 or other software. I don't think 3d printable threads are even on their radar...
is there any good cad software for android?
I'm not aware of a native app you can use on android. However, there are cloud based cad programmes that allow you to design right out of the browser. I have heard many good things said about onshape. There is a free plan so might be worth a look www.onshape.com/en/products/free
@@IQWorkshop thanks pal I'm kind of regretting getting the tab s9fe+ only for that reason. sucks
@IQWorkshop that's crazy. I just bought a tab s9 fe + hoping I could use these type of apps. make me regret not getting an ipad 😒
I believe it actually does have an online requirement so not entirely accurate take. The only real true option is FreeCAD. It's open-source, works on most OS's, and truly impossible to ever lose access to. It has its own problems but that's all there is really. There is a free version of Solid Edge that is pretty good. It has tons of features and no license requirements for educational/hobby stuff. It does not need to connect to the Internet ever. I thought it would be more like NX but it only loosely resembles it and is not as stable. All CAD software is buggy as hell. Every. Single. Program. So annoying, it drives me crazy. I can crash any CAD program within 10 minutes even if I've never used it.
my understanding is that there is some communication to validate the license at install, but once that's done an internet connection is not required. maybe @AlibreLLC or @JokoEngineeringhelp can comment here
Does not work on macOS, so no.
Would the Type of 3d Printer matter for leveling?
For fdm printers this would be a standard process. Resin printers also need levelling but it's a different process
why are you walking while recording?
Gotta get my 10,000 steps in somehow 🤷♂️🤣
Good Info
It's always good to know others fail just as much as you and I do.
It's unobtainium if you think those showing things off don't get failures.
Just found out about Alibre and definitely going to give it a try. I've been using Fusion 360 for the last 4 years but hate that they update your software anytime there is a new version and you have not choice in the matter. Being retire I do all my cnc and 3d printing in the winter but in the summer I'm out and about so have to retrain myself constantly. Having a stable version I can learn and just do upgrades when there is a change that will make the job easier.
Just be aware that Atom3d is a cad only application. You will have to look at Alibre workshop if you want to output CNC processes 👍
@@IQWorkshop Thanks for letting me know, I use Vetric Aspire for my cnc.
cant find the link for fusion 360 that's free. All you have is a 30 day trial as far as I can see...

"Roll Up! Roll Up! All the fun of the fair... step Right In!!"
You are wrong, even with Alibre, the software works as long their license servers are online. If they shut down, you even can not start your local, paid software anymore. This is a scam today, because most software uses online license check, you are forced to connect to internet to check your licence, at least once a month.
That is the opposite of what Alibre claim on their website. Have you experienced this? They claim you can go offline completely and still use the software.
@AlibreLLC - Comments?
@@Alan-xz5yb They say you need to be online to license each machine once. So if their servers shut down, you are not able to license a new installation anymore. And yes, in the german text they say: "Internet access is required to license and unlicense machines and about once a month in general." So what means "in general" ??? Offline-License is something different to me, they are licensed by the software ittself, local, and do NEVER need an internet connection or external activation server. I dont think that this situation is very clear. As long as they do not shut down everything might be alright, but again "oiffline" is a bit different. To be clear, I do not fight aginst Alibre, but this license stuff really makes me angry in todays time. In detail, this type of license is not much better as any other type. It fails with shutdown of servers, or a missing connection to a server (at least at registering a new installation, or "in generall once a month". You dont need internet for every time you start the software, thats clear and true! They do have real offline licenses, but only with an active service plan (subscription) an only in their way more expensive professional or expert license. I dont see this feature for the cheaper hobby-user-license. Correct me please, if I am wrong!
@@M_B_80 It was the pro and expert licences I was looking at so that would explain how we came away with different info. Completely agree with you on the licencing over ownership issues. Annoys me too.
I've been using Alibre succesfully for over a year now, in an industry that's dominated by CATIA and NX. No extra license for STEP support, you're good in writing macro's? You can do that. My client can do things in Alibre that a major OEM can't do in CATIA without buying yet another expensive license.
I do have to say Alibre does lack surface modelling tools.
Nothings ever 100% perfect 👍
@@IQWorkshop Fair. And nothing beats Alibre for it's price no matter which edition you pick. Doesn't mean I don't have a wishlist of features I'd like to see added ;-)
It is time to try Ondsel :)
I just took a look at their website. Looks really interesting. I'll give it look
Dune3D FTW!
very cool thanks!
I own alibre atom, great for my needs
where did you pull the Cad file from ?
You can find all the files for the lumenpnp below. The documentation is incredible! github.com/opulo-inc/lumenpnp
And there's the problem. Need to register and give them my name and email so they can sell to 3rd partys. So not as free as you think. It's going to cost you your sanity getting rid of junk, spam and scan emails. Alibre professional costs £940 +vat Its currently reduced to £752 +vat Alibre Atom 3D £215 +vat FreeCAD is free including, no registration
I like the concept of freecad. But on a personal level I do not find the UI intuitive. With how I formulate my concepts I'm doing mental gymnastics just because how I think. To then do mental gymnastics to realise the concept in CAD is exhausting. There comfort in knowing there are many applications out there. If its not right for you keep looking. The perfect app for you is waiting to be found 👍
@@IQWorkshop The more you use it, the more you get used to it and the easier it gets. At first.. Yes it feels like its fighting you every step of the way.
Alibre does not sell your emails to 3rd parties. The need for registration with an email address is important for several reasons. First, emails allow us to look up customer licenses and provide effective support. Additionally, for trial users, an email helps us identify and assist them without confusion. For example, if you register for a trial of Atom3D and ask where the sheet metal tool is - we can look up your account to let you know it's only available in the Expert version. Also, if you need a few more days on your trial, we'd need some sort of unique information to locate the trial record to reset. Simply using names would lead to many duplicates. We've been on the market since the 90s - imagine how many people named "John Smith" have registered over the past 20 years 🙃
@@AlibreLLC Could you please clarify following questions: 1. is atom3d for commercial use also? 2. can I sell my license to another person? 3. are imported solidworks parts just a solid body, or does it translate the feature tree, meaning the part is fully editable?
Yes, it is ok for commercial use - it has no restrictions of any kind. Generally, no, you cannot sell your license. Though, if there is some compelling reason you need to, just ask us and explain - we are pretty chill and would probably say yes. I think we've had under 10 people in 20 years ask about that. Imported Solidworks parts are solid bodies, not feature history.
I feel the lack of boolean support in Atom3d is a deal breaker.
Yeah this is a concern of mine as well. Perhaps there are other ways to accomplish my needs without booleans, but I currently use them rather frequently.
@backpackvacuum9520 if there are no meaningful ways to work around this then maybe it's not for you 🤷♂️
Holding a Soldering Iron: "If you smell chicken cooking, then you're holding it wrong."
We've all seen that promo shot of the model holding a soldering iron incorrect 🤣
I 100% agree that Alibre is the way to go. It is straightforward and intuitive to use. I have been a longtime AutoCAD user, and I find Atom 3D easier than Fusion. The price is right. I plan on learning more about it and sharing what I know. If you are interested, I would love to follow.
What a great way to show a new CAD startup! Nice work and very informative starting cold like that.
I moved from Fusion to Alibre. Best alternative i've found without a subcription license.
Alibre is brilliant. Found it recently and is the closest thing to Fusion I've found. Not quite as slick but functions almost the same. It's a lot easier to use than FreeCAD.
FreeCad! Will do all of this.
Yes it will. I have done a video on freecad. For me it's about showcasing options available to makers. I don't find freecad's UI that friendly, but people do get on well with it. If Atom3d is not for you, all good. Sometimes it's good to know there are options 👍
Yeah, FreeCAD will do it after you do a couple of backflips through your asshole to make it work. FreeCAD is the horse designed by a committee.
@@tvideo1189freecad doesn't want your name and email address. So you are not selling your soul to the 3rd party ads, spam and scammers.
I love FreeCAD (especially with Cadquery) but it's not for the faint of heart.
I felt that one! You're right, it's not for the faint of heart
After downloading and system is open, most of my selections are greyed out and unavailable? Any suggestions? Great video mate👍
The versions most likely moved on but I have a walk through of me using freeCAD for the first time ua-cam.com/video/xyVC6AshAG4/v-deo.html
Great advice. Awesome channel. Keep up the awesome work
Good evening IQ, quick question after having installed CnCJs under RPI4 a few months ago, I haven't used it for 6 months....so I turn on RPi4 with the Micro SD where Twister + CnCJs is located but I can't more to find and therefore start CnCJs..A solution perhaps? Thanks to you Philip
Curious on the EULA. Would you be allowed to sell me your license of the software?
Quite convincing. I worked with Catia IV for years, loved it, but then access to it stopped. Then, I tried and used and paid for Fusion 360. But that annual subscription trap stopped me from building my future on it. And I once more tried FreeCAD. But for me, it is just quirky and upside down. Alibre price is OK, maintenance fee is OK. No complaining about it, that's a model I can accept. Now here is the problem: I'm Mac! Having been forced to work for decades on Windows (as a software developer) I absolutely can't and won't take the burden of Windows anymore. Are there Mac plans by Alibre? I would be in, take my money!
I would prefer Linux but any physical maker stuff that reliably works requires Windows.
@@JohnHoranzyLinux would be OK too. But as soon as a company offers Linux, the step to MacOS seems to be small enough. BTW: For me, "maker" is a synonym of "no clue, but likes to talk about"
@@MuellerNickThe people that are doing real work or "making" are not on UA-cam.
I have been told by my contacts in Alibre there are plans for both Linux and mac version. I will as for an official reaponse
@@IQWorkshopThat's great! Thanks.
Great 3d CAD package !!
So the Jack problem could be solved by changing the PCB connector from the 5,5 mm/2,1 mm to a 5,5 mm/2,5 mm. They have the same footprint ...
That's a good shout. I'm going to progress with the current plan as I consider this a prototype and is likely to need other changes.
@@IQWorkshopAnother hint then, sometimes I place the PCB connector and on the same place/footprint I place a terminal block and then I can choose if I want a terminal or a DC female connector depending on witch component I populate in that position.
@@IQWorkshopThanks for sharing your stream and your thought process. I got some ideas from your way of thinking...
@@MatsK007 it's good to see other ways of working. Even if it's to see how not to do something 🙃
Perpetual at the level bought. Perpetual for the OS used. Perpetual with the bugs it has. Perpetual even though something new comes along. You bought it, you own it forever... vs.. Subscription at the level you need now or in the future upgrade or downgrade. Subscription for the latest OS ( expect win12 to come along and support for win10 to disappear someday). Subscription for major bug fixes. Subscription for change of mind / heart after a month or two - no more 'If only I knew then what I know now regrets ! Subscription to 'try something entirely different' without commitment or having to buy a software product outright or spending months researching and asking for recommendations. Whatever route you go, there are pro's and cons either way. Companies need money to continue supplying functionality. If needing to change CAD, make sure you can get a good step translation then you're free to move on. Generally, freedom and flexibility costs more in most walks of life.
you are right, there are pros and cons with pretty much everything and nothing is perfect. It's all about finding a tool that fits the job and the user can operate it easily to get a result. 👍
So? what's your point? some tools just work and don't need "improvement". Some still use ancient hardware for specialized purposes. Like i've heard on ancient MRI's that are functional but only work on win98 with ISA control board. What is the solution? sure, upgrade to a new MRI, but this old functional one can still work in many places without an MRI. It's not scrap. Same for lathes, power plants, ATM, etc.. many run on antiquated hardware. "improvement" means a redesign of the software to run on newpc with old hardware that is a colosal work. Much cheaper to buy the modern already made specialized assembly.

Alibre has been turning out instructional videos fairly frequent as of late as well as Joccoengineering. I used to use FreeCad but everytime I opened the program my two remaining brain cells started to repell each other. Not so with Alibre Atom. It is a good product at a reasonable price. I am not who you would typically think of as wanting to learn 3D CAD. My next birthday begins with a 7. So if I can learn it anyone can if you put your mind to it.
this is Awesome!
Could you cover the Pro & expert versions please.
