Spatial audio with Dynamic Acoustics in Godot | Tutorial
In this tutorial we will learn how to make spatial audio with dynamic acoustics in Godot.
This is a basic implementation meant as an example for how you could implement dynamic acoustics, there are tons of improvements that can be made to the system but it is a good starting point and feels a lot better than the standard AudioStreamPlayer3D.
This is a quick showcase of my spatial audio system in Godot for my new project. I've been working on a system in which spatial acoustics are procedurally calculated based on the geometry of the level.
The range of different acoustics you hear is completely dynamic: The differences between being outdoors and indoors, different sizes of spaces, being outdoors but having large walls around, the sound source being in a different acoustic space than the listener, the resulting acoustics are all completely procedural.

    Brutal. I can't complain about the "gross income" which was like 100fold the revenue of these games. But I can, and will complain about the 30% tax, and 30% STEAM take on top of the 5-8% refunds. That is the one and only thing I still hate about STEAM. They take far too much from indie developers.

    Simple, but making a separate animation script for each facing direction invites inconsistency issues. And you're also coupling your animation system with a scripting system.

    This is exactly why I stopped developing games and chose something else to do with my spare time. I developed games for about 10 years in my spare time. I made about $5000 of profit in those years. Sounds like a nice extra, but that doesn't include buying equipment needed to develop the games, hardware and software. In the end it's a lot of time spent for little profit. It's a lot of fun though and it taught me many good skills. I moved from game development to art, using a number of the skills acquired over the years and building on them. I'm now making more profit in one year than I did in those 10 years and that's with all the real costs deducted. For me game development was a stepping stone to something much better. Who knows what it eventually will bring for you.

    As solo devs, I think it's important to be harsh with ourselves and ask why should I buy this game? What does my game bring to the table that other similar games don't? If there are hundreds of similar games made by bigger teams with bigger budgets, then the game is likely to be of lower quality, and the customer would rather buy the higher quality product.

    !🐛BUG ALERT🐛! The video version contains a bug where if the audio player is a child of something that rotates then it will not update the RaycastPlayer correctly. To fix the bug remove the RaycastPlayer from the node and ready function and then use the following _on_update_lowpass_filter function: func _on_update_lowpass_filter(_player : Node3D): if _lowpass_filter != null: var query = PhysicsRayQueryParameters3D.create(self.global_position,self.global_position + (_player.global_position - self.global_position).normalized() * max_raycast_distance, $RaycastForward.get_collision_mask()) var space_state = get_world_3d().direct_space_state var result = space_state.intersect_ray(query) var lowpass_cutoff = 20000 #init to a value where nothing gets cutoff if !result.is_empty(): var ray_distance = self.global_position.distance_to(result["position"]) var distance_to_player = self.global_position.distance_to(_player.global_position) var wall_to_player_ratio = ray_distance / max(distance_to_player,0.001) if ray_distance < distance_to_player: lowpass_cutoff = wall_lowpass_cutoff_amount * wall_to_player_ratio _target_lowpass_cutoff = lowpass_cutoff Alternatively you can view/download the fixed code here: www.patreon.com/posts/98559205 (its free)

    This is kind of inspiring for me. I am working on a 3d game in Godot, where the player plays as a dolphin. It focuses on how they use sound for nearly everything. I wanted to implement a system similar to the GSound demo posted here on UA-cam. I thought that I was going to have to write a custom audio server. But this gives me hope that I won't have to.

  • @morgan0
    @morgan0 2 місяці тому

    fyi the lerps here are actually creating a first order lowpass filter (or smoothing filter), or an exponential moving average. it's similar to the filter you're using on the audio, but at a much lower cutoff frequency, and smoothing whatever values instead of audio

    Damn this is SICK, i found this tuto so useful as a starting point but other than adding more rays (like each diagonal for xy xz and zy planes and evey diagonal inbetween) i have no clue on how ot improve it further. Doy ou know other effects other than the two you showed so that i might get my hands on them? or do you plan on expanding this example?

    • @Blekoh
      @Blekoh 2 місяці тому

      Thanks! Well there are a few ways it could be improved on but for my game I felt like it is good enough as is🤖 Some systems treat different surfaces different like carpet would be different than tile floor, or wood, etc. Sometimes other spatial audio systems will also add a compressor (which is just another effect that balances the audio out so things don't get blown out). An EQ might also be good to avoid off frequencies idk. I think spatial audio can be a rabbit hole for people to go down where a simple system like this will get you 90% of the way and you could spend months trying to perfect the system to get the extra 10% haha

    • @morgan0

      if you want to add more rays for better resolution of what's around it, you could use a stochastic method where you shoot out rays in a random direction (or random forwards and backwards, or rotating a bunch of rays, whatever) and having some representation of distance in a sphere around it that each ray modifies based on where it is pointing, with some smoothing temporally and spatially. then unless the sound source is moving fast enough that it can't update frequently enough (also stationary objects could update less often), it will trend towards accurate distances. after watching some more, if you just want averages, you could use an exponential moving average with random ray directions. for each ray, calculate what its contribution would be, and then blend 0.9 of the old value with 0.1 of the new value (or maybe even smaller). that's different from typical linear interpolation, but is using the lerp function to create a first order smoothing filter, or an exponential moving average.

    God damn it - you deserve better. My recommendation is to make something "stupid" and funny again. I think people prefer ugly and funny games that are made on purpose instead of games that try to look good but only copy mechanics (like that cat tower defense). Make a spinoff of Beardy McStrongarm in Multiplayer where his friend Baldy McLongfoot joins the adventure and they together can transform into a Megabeard McKickass super character where each player controls one part of the body xD

    I just make a layer, put it at the very top of the layer list, manually set its depth to like -100,000, use that layer for the stuff i want to *always* be above the player, and call it a day lol. Because the depth = -bbox_bottom doesnt "ignore" the layer set up. Its just changing your player (objects) to basically always have a negative depth, which by default, the lowest depth layer is 0. Just need to manually set the following layer to 0 so it doesnt auto change it and the rest of the layers to go along with the new -100,000 layer (which im sure you knew that and was just speaking casually)

I think it was a much more realisitic peak behind the curtains for a lot of indie devs compared to the bigger indie dev youtubers who often make a lot from their games. You are selling a game for half of hollow knight which is a crazy, gigantic, amazingly polished game in every aspect. Maybe try to focus on polishing more so it looks more like a high end product, or try getting numbers by making the games way cheaper, like mobile game companies do! I love the graphics. Music sounds fine too. I am not sure about RTS + Tower Defense combination and how it all got integrated with story. While it looks like was made with quality and I can see it, it also has appeal, I rather see it as a mini game than big release. I would pay half to feel good about buying this kind of game. As for the rest of functionalities, I am not sure how much went to make multiplayer and map editor but I definitely would recommend focusing on foundation first and adding further additions as time goes (if there will be audience for it). Still, big respect, subscribed, wish you the best on your journey.

    Going to leave some brutal honesty here as I think that is the most helpful thing for indie game developers with promise. I hope you don't take this as negative because I only wish the best. I think your latest game is a huge step forward in art direction compared to your other games. Your other games look very amateur. Beardy McStrongarm looks like a first game, your sequel games with the commands lack even the most basic polish so they really don't appeal at all. The main character art/animations look like they took an hour if even. This game looks way way better. I was really surprised with how much better it looked. The limited pallet idea was great. However, it just doesn't look like a fun or interesting game to play. Tower defence is over saturated. It looks like you put a spin on it but it just doesn't appeal much. I think you have huge potential to make a winner though. The art looks super promising. I think people would love to play other types of games in this style. I think the number one thing that would help you make a successful game is prototyping. for your next game I think you should create 20 or so game ideas. Some should be very simple. Like really simple, with a clear game loop and some spin on an idea. Then actually block out and prototype the feel of 3 or 4 of them. Establish the game loop with no art as quickly as possible to see what feels like the most fun to play. Make the one that feels the most fun. Avoiding giant games like indie devs who attempt to make open world is important and avoiding the most common games like tower defence, platformers and stuff with rounds/score without interesting twists to that genre is also important. All of the idea stuff is easier said than done of course. I think your prospects of making a success are great though. Good luck!
