HEATSEEKER - How To Replace SQUAREBODY HEATER CORE - UTX
Today at Ugly Truck, we're replacing a leaky heater core in the '78 Chevy C10. Installing a new heater core can be a pain, but there are only 4 bolts that hold the heater box in a squarebody, so it's still a pretty quick job. We also fixed a couple HVAC vacuum lines under the dash, and talk about vacuum port options on the LS truck intake.

Today at Ugly Truck, we're talking Ford engineering nightmares and broken spark plugs. This 2018 1.5 turbocharged Escape went to another shop for a basic repair, and ended up back here for an engine replacement. So we're taking the opportunity to explain the 1.5L Ecoboost timing and special tools needed to replace the timing belt. Once again making lemonade from all these lemons! ANYKIT Boresco...
LESSONS LEARNED - Replacing a FAILED 5.3 + Our Best LS Swap ADVICE - UTX

Today at Ugly Truck, we're learning lessons the hard way. We built this 5.3 LS engine for this 1984 Chevy C10 swap, and it failed! There was some debris hiding in the oil galley and it wiped out all the bearings, but we're determined to squeeze some lemonade out of this lemon. Replacing this brand new engine is a real bummer, but it's a great opportunity to answer some of your LS swap questions...

Today at Ugly Truck, we're adding cruise control to Emily's 1970 Chevy C10. It didn't originally come with cruise, but we want it to look like a factory option. So we used a Rostra 250-3020 switch from a later model truck, and with the help of a couple of relays, we're ready to cruise! Where do you guys find all your wiring diagrams?
Good afternoon yall. Thanks for the information yall shared. I’m in the process of rebuilding my 45rfe, it’s currently a 4wd but I want it to be a 2wd. Besides the tail piece, does the tcm or any sensors need to be modified in order for it to work? Thank yall so much
I absolutely love watching your guys videos It's awesome to see your channel growing You guys do such a great job on your LS swaps it looks like they came out originally that way what is the best way to reach out to you about doing one for me? i've got a 1982 short bed Silverado.
Ty. I love this video. Simple and to the point
Will this hookup allow the ability to tune with hp tuners or other laptop programs? As if it was still hooked factory
I have an 88 Blazer want to swap LS if you're interested I'm in Tucson Arizona can bring you the Blazer it's an 88 and can bring you a Copart donor
Do you have a link for the wire cutters you used?
Hi Chris! Here's a link to the big cutters we used. I don't think these are the same as in this video, but we've had this one for a while and it's been great. Thanks for tuning in! amzn.to/49PO9x1
I remembered that.
Good times. Thanks Rick.
Amazing video! Haha I'm the 300th person to say that cam retaining plate almost cost my engine 🤣 sure solved my oil pressure issue...and for both my parents 5.3's as well lol
WHY cover the exhaust port when you have the spark plug out and hole OPEN? Thanks
South Park mmkk ok!!
🤣 Thanks for tuning in!
👍
Happy Holidays, Prevost! 👋🎄
Good stuff. Now that I have my motor out this is probably a good time to replace the heater core. Is there an evaporator Core Video coming soon?
Hello Benjamin. The guy who owns this truck is pondering having me put AC in it this year. If that happens, we will absolutely have a Evaporator video. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
The spring bypass on the oil pan could be your culprit.
Thanks Tim. That could be. I always replace that valve no matter what. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jerry and Emily
Okay! 😂👍
OK SO! 😁👍 Thanks for tuning in!
Hi All. I was lucky my 1982 fitting on line screwed rite in.. so that was nice
Hello Mike. I misspoke on this video and meant to say 78, not 87. In the early 80's they changed to that fitting and most of them screw right in. We uploaded the video before we noticed I screwed up. Glad yours went smooth. Thanks. Jerry and Emily
Hey great video as usuall. Question for ya. I noticed in one clip of video the extension for temp sending unit. I installed one in my 5.3 and temp doesnt read accurate its on cold or slightly above. What type did you use? I searched some vids but cant find where you talk about it...Engine runs great but temp gauge reading low is goofy! Thanks..❤❤
Hey Mike! Here's a video where we talked about that adapter, and the oil pressure adapter, and I believe there is a link in the description to the parts we used. ua-cam.com/video/C3sYMKrcQAI/v-deo.html This truck read a little low, but it worked fine. If the wiring checks out ok going to the gauge, it might be the gauge itself that is bad. Hope this helps! Happy Holidays!
Great video guys as usual you make it look a lot easier than it can be, is it possible to replace the evaporator without pulling the heater box?
Hello David. Yes. It required removing the same bolts as the interior box and then 2 others that are accessed from the engine compartment. I have always just figured on removing the inner fender when I do them. Makes it much easier. I have seen people do it without and end up breaking something in the process. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
I could not find a way to post on your Facebook page(starting my own thread). So I’ll ask here. I have a non A/C 69 C10. I’ve always planned on adding air conditioning. I just bought a 2003 Tahoe donor truck. My question is can I use the complete hvac system out of the Tahoe and use it in my C10? I’ll be fabricating the vents. I’m not sure how I will be working in the controls. I really don’t want to use the Tahoe control. I figure since I’ve already got it in the donor, why would I want to spend $1800 on Vintage Air.
Hey Fritz. I have daydreamed about doing that same thing for the longest time. It would be a fun job to tackle. I would think the biggest problem would be using the electrical motors to have the mechanical advantage to move the older doors. I am sure it could be accomplished. That is the kind of time I wish we had. If you attempt it make sure to keep us posted. Thanks. Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience I think I would just try to reuse the Tahoe stuff on the inside too. Surely I can get it to work under the dash. We’ll see.
My 01 02 donor has 2 connectors on the 4L60. I am in the process of cleaning up my wire harness. Should I go ahead and leave all those wires and reconnect them? I also found the green connector 3 B3 wire that I labeled for the backup lamps. I also plan to remove my original neutral safety switch. My truck did have a 700R4, so I don’t know if that makes a difference in my choice? Again great video thanks for your help!
I make sure all the my wiring Is good and then go and remove any of the wires from the connectors that are not used. I do keep the wires that I remove just in case I add something later. The fewer the wires, the better it will look of course. Shouldn't really be any difference from the 700r4. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again. Jerry
Hey guys, I think you probably addressed this in an earlier video but what antifreeze do you use on these swaps with an aftermarket and this stock type of heater core? Is Dexcool safe ? Thanks
Hey Scott! We use Dexcool in my '70 an aftermarket heater core with no issues. Plus, it looks pretty! 😆 We have had to replace the heater core in every swap we've done so far, and I'm not sure if that's due to the Dexcool or just more miles being put on the truck. It's hard to say how old that heater core is when it gets to us, so we can't totally blame the Dexcool. We appreciate you tuning in! Happy Holidays! --Emily
I had a 91' Thunderbird and my 03' Crown Vic that i have now, I had to take the dash out to replace the heater core. The third time i had to do that i found out the Vics have an electrolysis issue. I learned how to drop the dash and slide it back and from the passenger side i could slide the heater box out. I wrapped a wire around the tube and grounded it the the passenger side ground pount. Its been in there 4 years now. Better than every year lol!!!
Electrolysis used to be a real problem back in those days. Thankfully manufacturers have figured it out over time. Thanks for watching and commenting, Hugh!
@UglyTruckExperience ALWAYS!!!!!
The cable controls line pressure only. As line pressure is used in many locations at various purposes it never controls shifting as that job falls to governor pressure. At no point does this effect vacuum anywhere especially at the transmission. I rebuilt these at shop, dealerships and home. There are about 13 updates to do and about 13 better parts to be used. All can be done for under a $1,000 in parts total. The link that pulls on the arm would be called a bell crank link. Changing a short movement into a longer movement it a bell crank. Just like ringing a church bell. Two feet of rope pull equals 5 feet of bell movement. This is where the term comes from. Great job, and thanks kindly for sharing.
Great info! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for tuning in!
@ Thanks for the kind words! Just found a photo online of a 65 Renault Gordini I built at age 14. I had heads milled and crank balanced that cost $58 dollars in 72. Built on a GM “X” and 64 power glide trans that factory comes with two pumps, one at torque converter and the back driven by the output shaft. I had $400 in it & a guy from nearby town had to have it. Sold for $650 and it was fast. 1/2 block of black marks with locking diff out of wrecked Buick Skylark! The same plate type Auburn (Corp) diff as a regular 12 bolt. 53 years ago! Wow. Where does time go?
It was nice meeting yall
Great meeting you as well! Is this Paul with the black dually?
Another great video, thank you
Thanks Ronnie! We appreciate you tuning in!
what a grateful information, thanks again for sharing your knowledge !!! 👍
Thanks DaysLife! We appreciate you watching our stuff!
This video came at a great time! I will soon be putting all the AC/Heat back together after paint. Do you have a source for new vacuum actuators? Thought I might replace mine while it's all out.
Hey Mike! We can't remember ever replacing one, but it looks like CJ Pony Parts and Old Air Products both have them, and we'd feel good about ordering from either. Hope you guys have a great holiday! 👋 --Emily and Jerry
Hi guys! Great to see you again! We have big surprises for the C10 Addiction Cruise N Show next year!
We're still here! And still enjoying your keychains from this year! Thanks again! Happy Holidays!
@UglyTruckExperience you too!
UA-cam has not notifies me of one of your videos for.months...honestly had forgotten ya. I am.watching just because I am curious if the 73/up ones are as ridiculous as 67-72s...?

Need help I can’t get the starter wire for mine it doesn’t show a yellow wire but two small black wires and I wired my purple starter wire to it but won’t turn over
Hey Terminator, what was your donor harness and fuse box out of? We'll look at a wiring diagram.
New to the channel and subscribed. I have an 1987 GMC truck. They removed all the fuel lines, tank, and wiring to the fuel system. I just want to drive it. I bought a new 20 gallon tank with the tbi internal pump. I converted it to carburetor. That internal has 14 to 20 psi. way more then I need. Can you make a line type recommendation, and fuel regulator recommendation. I figure I'll need to use a bypass style and I have no idea what to place over the tank vent. I'm loving the channel, and hope you have time to help me out, if you can , and get that dog some pigs ears.
Hey Smokey. If your engine has a spot in it for a mechanical carburetor? You could just run a mechanical pump and disconnect the electrical going to the pump in the tank. The pump should draw fuel through the electric pump just fine. If you do not have provisions for a mechanical pump you could just add a small 12 volt pump in line that will supply the low pressure that you need. The relay on the firewall would be easy to get that key on engine running power from. That would eliminate the need of a regulator and a return line. If you still have the carbon canister up on the drivers side by the radiator you could just run a evap line to that canister the same as it was originally. Hope that makes sense. Thanks. Jerry
I like what you said my truck is not house broken lol I like that
😁👍 Thanks David! We appreciate you tuning in!
I did an ls swap on my 91 c1500, just have to do the ac and couple of things...but i can't seem to find any signs the pancake style compressor had the rear switch (hight pressure switch?) Wire...Do i not need it because this model didn't come with it ? Any ideas?
Hello Moe. It depends on what you are using to control the AC system.. The LS systems early designs used the pressure switch and the later ones went to the pressure sensor. The pancake compressors do have a round plug in the back of them that can be used to add the high pressure switch if needed. I would need to know a little bit more about your swap to give you some better info. Thanks. Jerry
@UglyTruckExperience good evening..I bought a 4 seasons pancake style compressor; to run r134a instead of r32(?)...I was hoping on using the stock controls for my Ac system, (also recirculating mode on ac) only thing is that I can't find the wire that would go to the back of the compressor to install the h.p switch(old compressor didn't have one)..

Have you considered doing a ls swap in the 1st gen c10s? 60-66? Also what do you think of the gen 4 swaps and it's wiring, ecm and TCM minus the afm issues?
Hey Aaron! We'd love to swap a 60-66, but haven't had a good candidate come our way yet. And we will have a ton of Gen 4 videos coming up very soon! Thanks for tuning in! --Emily and Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience thank you Soo much! Love your informative content, I'm looking forward to starting my swap project. Reason why I was asking is I have a 65 c10 I've had since 95 and I have a 07 suburban as a donor for the 5.3 gen 4 and 4l60e. Dod delete.
The Gen4 is very similar when it comes to just making the engine and transmission run correctly. When you start adding things like AC and cruise control it gets a little more difficult. Make sure you snag the body control module and its plugs from your donor. Jerry
@UglyTruckExperience thank you! Yeah planning on pulling the body control module, but I'm curious about the factory ac compressor as I want to use it for ac conversion in my 65
@UglyTruckExperience oh and also the CAN line???
Do you happen to have the gen 3 a/c wiring video? I am told my pcm will not work with my swap to control my ac
Hi Oscar, here's a link to that video! Thanks for tuning in! ua-cam.com/video/tv1LtLT9zmM/v-deo.html
For 99-02 c1 underhood connector there are no pinouts online that i can find. and i dont believe f7 is battery constant. do you know any other pins for 99-02? im looking for cigarette lighter 15amp but cant find the exact pinout, trying to line it up and the closest one i can see is pin f4 which has 2 orange wires and i believe all orange wires are battery constant if im not wrong. Also it has me thinking it is correct because the cigarette lighter also has obd2 tied to it. need help
Hello Zombie. Sorry for this late response. You are correct. C1 F4 should have two orange wires that will be hot at all times. One wire went to OBD plug and the other to cigarette lighter. Jerry
Great info on reverse lights but can you in one of your future videos touch up on how to pass smog tests with ls swaps.
Hey Jimmy! We do get questions about smog tests a lot, but we don't have smog testing in Missouri and aren't sure what they require. What state are you in? We'll look into it and try to answer that in a video someday.
@ let me put on my flak vest before I answer the question lol I’m from California.
🤣🤣 We've talked to a few people who have passed smog in CA. If you're on FB, you can join our group UTX: Swap Talk, and I know we have folks there with more first hand experience.
Your sisters 🔥 HOT
I found those "twisty things" for your cherry picker at Tractor Supply. I ran all over town looking for them.
If I missed it, I apologize. Did you have the rotating assembly balanced?
As long as I am not replacing the pistons with something different that will throw off the weight I don't balance the crank. We have a video of turning a LQ4 into a LQ9 which we did have to because of the heavier pistons. I should have mentioned that in this video also. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Been a GM tech for nearly 20 years. Majority of the time when I have a broken exhaust bolt. I can Weld a nut to it and back it out that way. But it doesn't always happen that way.
We use that method a lot too, but in this video we were trying to give an option for someone who doesn't have a welder. It's always good to have a few different tricks to get the job done. Thanks for watching and commenting! Jerry and Emily
That will never work with OSB truck It may work fine with your square body trucks but you have to notch the frame in order for it to work with OSB I have mined up on top and it look just fine
That is excellent. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Hello! I am doing a ls3 swap from a Chevy ss to a 2010 Camaro shell. Can I use the same wiring harness and just reprogram the ecu and bcm so I can turn the car on with key ignition and bypass the vats system, or should I buy a 2010 used Camaro wiring harness with a ecu and just reprogram that ?
Sorry to just respond. That is a interesting question. I wish I could answer that one but I would have to ask the guy who does our tuning and computer programming that question. I personally don't see why that couldn't be done. If you end up doing that I would love to hear about it. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Sorry I wasn't able to join the live video. Jerry and Emily Congratulations for having more than double the amount of people watching the Live video, that shows how much y'all help and give people courage to do these swaps. Congrats to all the winners
Sorry you couldn't make it, but hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Thanks so much, wade! We appreciate all your support!
If you could start LS swapping 69-80 international harvesters that would be super helpful...
We've worked on a couple LS swapped Scouts over the years, but the IH's aren't very popular around here. But we've talked to several people doing swaps, so it's cool to see them getting some love. They're cool trucks! If we get a chance, we'd definitely swap one. Thanks for tuning in, Nackdad!
Ugly truck deserves 1 million subs.
🙏 Thanks Jimmy! We appreciate you tuning in!
