Take a drink for every time he says ok, comment how long you last lol. Great content, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
OK.. Thanks LittleGreenTractor. We appreciate you watching and having a great sense of humor. Jerry and Emily
My dad retired from GM and is gone now and i would give anything if i had listened and payed more attention and stored the wealth of knowledge he shared with me but i was young and dumb at the time. I do remember a bit of how they determined the viscosity and hydrodynamic oil film per engine application by measuring the resistance through the oil film somehow, it was many yrs ago and there was more to it than i can remember. To bad we dont have a way to store the knowledge that passes with them.
Also wanted to say ive re-used the cam plates and from my experience theres not enough of an enternal leak to notice a difference in oil pressure. I had a buddy was dodge guy and i think it was the LA engines that had a plate that covered the oil galley plugs and if he didnt have plugs he was just throw the plate on. If you think about all the internal places in engines that can leak it doesnt seam that important, the LS oil pump itself probably leaks a good amount where it meshes with the crank, the bearing and lifters clearances and the passage around the disributor on a sbc, thinking about all that im just not to worried about that cam plate, but if you can improve it why not but i ususally dont wait on one if i dont have one on hand.
Hey Steven. Sounds like you had a great dad. The people that did that engineering years ago we're crazy smart. They didn't have this computer sitting in front of them to give them all that info. They figured it out on their own. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Jerry and Emily
Thanks for the oil pump reason to not shim explanation. Great video, great tips!
Thanks Jason! We hope it helps some folks out. Your stickers are in the mail! 😁 --Emily
You 👩🏼🤝👨🏻 Mechanic shop is Very Nice & Clean. Only the professionals. Keep them Clean like this.😀
Keeping the shop clean is a full time job. Wish we could find some shop elves to come in at night and clean up. 😆 Thanks for tuning in, Bernando! 🙋♀️🙋♂️
@@UglyTruckExperience id keep the Shop Clean for you guys.if your in the California Area with in 50 Miles.😄
We've got a broom with your name on it! 🤣🤣🧹
I’m way less irritated when people call engines engines and not motors. Thanks Jerry
Luv you guys', all very good info. I've built many LS's over the years, even if they were junkyard engines there are a few things that I would address just as cheap insurance. Upgrade rocker trunnions', most times a new set of LS6 valve springs and seals, new timing set and a new oil pump and O ring. I never have shimmed the gearotor set when installing a pump and never had a failure. I do have a set of the plastic seal spacers that I use when installing the end covers and I always use a Trick Flow timing chain damper kit, just seems to be a lot of slop even in a new LS timing chain. Great explanation of setting up the covers with the engine upright. I always do it but never put 2 and 2 together on the crank deflection. Thanks.
Hey Ken. Thanks for watching. I'm going to give the timing chain damper a try on the next one that we do for ourselves. Keep your comments coming. We always enjoy them. Jerry
I slipped on a Leaky oil cam plate one time and broke my back which ruined my life so you're right about how you shouldnt change them but they do leak lol
You broke your back because of a cam plate?? I bet you really don't like cam plates. I am definitely going to pick them up off the floor right away from now on. Thanks for watching Thomas. Jerry
Thank you guys very much. I really enjoy how you explain things. It’s a real gift and it’s much appreciated. I’m getting into doing maybe a LS engine for a 96 Chevy pick up truck great job.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Don! We're glad you're enjoying the videos! A 96 would be a great candidate for a swap.
I’m 4 mins in and I’ve heard Ok? Like 40 times.. ok? 🤣🤣
Good video so far. Ok?
I hear this complaint fairly often and go into every video saying that I am not going to say OK. It has decreased a bunch and fortunately Emily can edit most of them out. Changing the way that I talk is not the easiest thing to do and having a camera on you at the same time just adds to the difficulty. Thanks for watching. Jerry
MM Kay
I think i love watching these videos so much because it makes me with I had a experience like this when i was younger, Great stuff thanks so much
Thanks Jimmy! We're glad you're enjoying the videos! 😎👍
Hello Jerry and Emily!!! How are you guys doing? Good here. Thank you for the adjustment of the oil pump. I put mine on and barely snugged the bolts and rotated my engine twice. Good enough lol. I'm not building a race car engine lol.
Hey Hugh! 👍 You did more to install it that GM asked for! 😁 How's your swap coming along?
@UglyTruckExperience That's true lol. Next step is the heads. Saving up is the hard part. I need all new valves because I had bought bare heads. But it's coming along. Good seeing a video from you guys!!!
This by far the best ls build I have ever seen I’m an 80s hot rodder, so I’m good on the sbc but ls is whole different animal and now I have much better idea of what I need to do. Thanks. While at FLW we lived in Lebanon.
Thanks Mark! We're glad to hear the videos have been helpful, and we appreciate you tuning in! --Jerry and Emily
Ms. Lady you are delightful!
😆 Thank you! We appreciate you tuning in! --Emily
Great video, i love the longer content, and I very much enjoy your interaction with each other. Keep up the good work, ya'll.
Thanks Randy! Glad you're liking the longer videos! There's a new one coming up very soon. 😁 --Emily
My understanding of shimming an LS oil pump was the bypass valve internal to the pump- to increase the max oil pressure.
Hello Enginerd. That is what I think when people mention shimming the pump also, which does work. Most of our comments and questions are asking about the centering of it but refer to it as shimming it. Words.. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Amazing video!
Haha I'm the 300th person to say that cam retaining plate almost cost my engine 🤣 sure solved my oil pressure issue...and for both my parents 5.3's as well lol
Great technic new Engine manufacturing Assembling beautiful, Nice Shop Working
Thank you, Imran! We appreciate you watching our videos! 👋
Jerry, I put A Billet Dumb Bell in mine because it makes me sleep better knowing that the $25.00 part is billet and I was convinced by the interwebs that it was mandatory. Billet dumbbell on a 210,000 mile refresh...I guess I am the dumb bell lol. Another great T Shirt idea. I build my LS with UTX. Don't forget Get wired with UTX shirts coming soon....
Hey Scott. I have installed the billet myself and I really do think that I slept better knowing how shiny it was. We have to get on top of the T-shirts. Looking for better quality shirt and then will go wild with the design's. Thanks again. Jerry
Gildan Soft Style is the best and very reasonable. Feels great and people will actually wear them ..

Love the content brother keep up the good work 👍🏼
Thanks Butcher! We appreciate you tuning in!
As far as rods is that the same for all of the vortec 4.8/5.3/6.0 engines? That it doesn't matter the direction you put it in? Also, straight edge FTW with the gaskets. Followed your freshen up video to a T on my last 5.3 and it's still going strong no leaks no issues. Same parts and everything.
Hello Charmley. A 4.8 has a different crank and rod length. The others are the same. Nice job. Glad it is going good. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily
Thanks for sharing !
We appreciate you tuning in! 👋
Thanks for the tutorial, always informative.
Thanks Chris! We appreciate you tuning in!
On your front cover and back cover you have the weight of the cover pressing on your seal and you crank is at the bottom of the bearing so your seal is not center of the crank. best to buy the tools, their not that expensive. the rest sound good.
Thanks Big John. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily
Another great video. As always learned a lot!
Thanks Bryan! Hope you're enjoying your 6.0! 👋
Love the content, answered questions I’ve had floating around in my head. Would love to hear your thoughts on a poor man’s lq9 by putting 862/706 heads on an lq4?
It increases compression and torque some but to go further put true flat tops in
I think the 862 and the 706 are smaller valve heads. They do flow great even though and I have just gone with the 317's so I didn't have to deal with anything but the stock tune. I would love to try it though. Let us know if you end up doing it and how it works out. Jerry and Emily
243 and 799 are the best small valve heads from the factory. Don't waste your time and money on the others if you look for small valve heads.
Love the build videos. Also look forward to a 4x4 video
Thanks Hudson! We have some 4x4 stuff coming up soon!
Are you sure there was t a red spring in the melli ok pump kit. I've replaced about 50 oil pumps in the past 3 years and I've always had the yellow piece of paper explaining what o ring to use based on what color came off and a 100lb spring (red) and a oem spring (yellow). It has been al.kst a year since my last install of one so it must be very recent that they discontinued adding the other spring
Hello Charles. I was always use to having that extra spring in the box also. I have only purchased 5 or so in the last year and noticed around then that they started showing up without the spring. The Melling 10295 and the 10296 come with the optional springs and are just a bit higher priced. I imagine it was a cost thing sending out all of those springs that usually didn't get used. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the education!
The man, the myth, the legend! Thanks for tuning in, Daniel! 😎
this content information was just golden.👍🏼
Thanks DaysLife! 🤘😎
Hello idol during my school year of 1998.i do that. I use the plastic Guage
Hello Jograd. Thank you for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Love the video! What kind of HP will this engine have when completed?
Thanks David! With stock exhaust manifolds and freer flowing exhaust, it should be around 350-360 HP.
Do you use thread locker on any of the bolts and if so which bolts do you use this on? Great content thank for sharing!!
Hello Kris. I use blue locktite on the flexplate bolts for sure. Some people use it on the camshaft sprocket bolts and that is fine also. The cam retainer plate bolts should be replaced with new that will have it it on them but would use it if not using new bolts for some reason. Thanks watching. Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperiencethank you!
LOVE your videos, and this one! What pistons and rods did you go with on this build? Thank you.
We used the stock floating wrist pin connecting rods and Sealed Power H1506CPA 0.20 oversize on this one. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Thank you for sharing this video.

Hello sir where are you from recording this video of garage...?
Because maybe we need come to learning automation work.
I’ve already seen Bigfoot, I’m here for the aliens.

Good learnings. Funny ending.
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you tuning in!
Cleared up a whole lot of things about front and rear covers, dogbones and oil pan things to check.
More of Emily's usual excellent camera work.
But I sure was cringing when you took the Channel-Locks to that crank snout.
Thanks so much, Rick! I knew someone would call Jerry out for the Channel Locks on the crank! 😆 --Emily
I’m rebuilding my L94 and your videos have been super helpful! I was planning on the melling m365hv. Is there any chance of it sucking too much oil? Mine is DOD deleted and the valve in the oil pan is plugged off
Hello. That pump will pull some more volume but as long as its not low on oil it would not be an issue. You would have to run it at a very high rpm for a good amount of time to cause any issues. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
Hello, I really liked the video! I'm a Brazilian who loves American cars. I live here in Florida, near Orlando. I have a 2002 Pontiac Firebird 5.7, but the block has 2 holes and needs to be replaced. I was thinking about putting in a 6.0 block and whether it would be better to use the original 5.7 engine heads or what would be the best option. I also have no idea if the wiring harness and computer in my car should be replaced or if I can use the same one. Could you help me with this information, please?
Hello Marcio, It would probably be easier to fin a 6.0 to put in that car. Both of them are excellent engines though. The wiring will be the same for the most part and the ECM would need to have a tune installed for the 6.0 and whatever you have for a transmission and drivetrain. It would not be to involved to go with the 6.0. Either way you go, keep either engine with its stock heads and it will be much less headache. Let us know what you end up doing. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Very nice
Thanks Imran. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Jerry and Emily
Hey bud, I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I’m doing a 79 pick up Chevy with the LS swap with dual tanks. What video is the best set up of yours? To check out.
Hello Michael. We have a few of them, but I would check this one out first. ua-cam.com/video/NtfJcXJBirg/v-deo.html
curious what is the coating in your block valley? just engine paint or a special sealer? thxs
Hello Brian. Maybe the camera angle is making it look like it is painted or prepped in some way. It is just a clean, bare block. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
Love your shop . Wish you could help me with mine. Always worried about machine shop work getting done right.
Hello Roy. We use the O'Reilly machine shop here in town and they have always done a great job for us. It really can be a problem to find a good one for sure. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperience I wrenched from 1990 to 2001 and loved it. At 60 can only do certain things. I love your videos . I hope to rebuild the 6.0 in are 2004 Yukon soon.
Loving the Mission SHIMpossible series! We sent you an email, take a look.
Hi Ann, we'll check out your email. Thanks for tuning in! --Emily and Jerry
You could add a drop of grease to your engine stand, it makes it turn over much easier.
Thanks Dan. I really should do that. It would be much easier on my back I am sure. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
When going from dished piston to flat top your reason to increase compression.
* more power * lq4-lq9 then you said we are staying 317 so no changes in tune. Unless u are using a lq9 ecm. You'll need a tune anyway. . So why not do it right put a set of 243-799 be done.
Hello NPG. The LQ9 with 317 heads is a stock tune. We send the computer out to the guy who does our computers. He will download a stock tune for a LQ9 and a 4L80 transmission and it will run perfectly without a custom tune. If we change the engine from a stock configuration, like adding more compression with different heads, a custom tune would be needed. I also need this truck to run on 87 octane regular fuel. Jerry
Hello idol I like your job.
Thank you! We appreciate you watching!
Hello y'all, what would be the pros and cons of up grading a ly6 with 408 stoker? Would you do this move?
That 408 would be pretty cool. Not the cheapest thing to do. That ly6 puts out 364 Hp stock. You can put a LQ9 cam in it and get around 440 horsepower. We have a Ly6 also that I think we are going to go the different cam route. Let us know what you end up doing. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
I want to get 5 to 600 horsepower. Which way would yall good
I've been seeing some 6.0 max engine's for sale. Usually in a wrecked Denali. What's the deal with those?
Hello Bill. I believe the 6.0 Max is a LQ9. Which is nice. Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience yes the early gen 3 ones in the gmt800 lineup…the Gmt900 i believe the vortech max is aluminum and in the form of a 6.2……someone please correct me if im wrong, i apologize in advance just in case!!!
Can I get a list of the parts you used on the build
Hello Frank. We will get that list out soon. Thanks. Jerry and Emily
What brand Torque Wrench was that again?
Hey GHK! The brand is Vanpo and they're available on Amazon. Here's a link to the set we have, and they've been great! Thanks for tuning in! amzn.to/4ccNNkB
After I strip my 4.8L of the heads, pistons, crank, cam and oil pan, everything and I drop my engine off at the machine shop, what am I actually telling them to do to my block and crank? I kno I need them to inspect for cracks and warps but what else…, polish crank, clean… I dnt kno, I dnt wanna sound like I don’t kno what I’m doing, but I also wanna kno what to expect…. I’m going to reuse the same crank so that I don’t have to balance a new one and that just means that I need to crank balanced., but what exactly needs to get done to the block? I don’t think I’m going to bore it out any but I plan to turbo this engine and I’d like to know what I need to do to the engine block so that I can put it back together properly., piston, ring gap, and all
Hello Jah. I hope you have a good machine shop that you can take that motor to and give you some good advice. I will drop off a motor and just tell them what I am hoping to do with it and take their advice on what needs to be done. I will usually stop and talk to them before I actually take them my parts just to see if they are helpful. I have to trust in their advice in order to have a good outcome and it is in their best interest to get the engine up and running with no problems. If you end up not boring the motor. Make sure each cylinder is measured and make sure they know your intending on a turbo. Hope that helps. Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience thanks Jerry,, your channel is the best, I’m hoping my daughter and I can have some similar exposure and success with our channel as well…

Thanks Chimp. I knew that comment was coming and could count on you. That definitely nails it. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Lol like the new form!!! Lol.
👽👽😸
Im curious how you made it an LQ9 without going to flat top pistons. You put the 317 heads back on which are known to be poo.
You’ve made it even less compression than it would have as an LQ9. You just have an LQ4 with low compression heads.
I picked up an LQ9 the other day, pistons are flat for compression, The valve reliefs those pistons have lower compression significantly. An LQ9 with work should have one relief for intake only, which isn’t needed here since you went back with the factory cam.
if you took 706 heads you’d bump your compression up closer to where the LQ9 is.
Great video but didn’t actually build what you think you built. Mkay? 😊
Hello Andy. Most 6.0's ran the 317 heads. They we're not the highest compression heads but do flow great and are not riddled with any inherent problems. The pistons with the valve reliefs are not similar to the stock LQ9's, but are the closest I can get without spending a fortune on pistons. The two valve reliefs would decrease the compression a pinch but not enough to make a difference. The original 6.0 pistons do not have any valve reliefs at all. We build these to run on a stock tune. If we we're to throw different heads on and crank up the compression we would have a motor that would have to be tuned and that is not what our customers want. We appreciate your thoughts and thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperience I never noticed this response.
I guess that makes sense. Thank you
Numbers on the block will tell you if you have a lq9 or lq4 block
Hello Charlie. What numbers are you referring to? Jerry
@ numbers cast into the back passenger side of the block
Ok. Those numbers will designate if the engine is a 4.8/5.3 or a 6.0 liter block but do not distinguish whether the engine is LQ4, LQ9 or any other RPO code. Jerry
@ I googled the numbers that I have and it tells me it’s a lq9

With a double roller timing chain. Is it required to run a aftermarket timing chain COVER for clearance
We haven't used a double roller, but from what I understand, you can grind the original cover for clearance. But it looks like you'll also need to shim everything else to line up correctly. Here's a thread I found on it. ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1411506-double-roller-timing-chain-clearance-question.html Someone there may be able to answer your questions better than we can. Hope this helps! --Emily and Jerry
