- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- Today at Ugly Truck, we’re talking LS swaps and body control modules, and wiring the tow haul mode on our 1970 Chevy C10 with a 5.3 and 4L60E. We’ve had a ton of questions about the BCM when it comes to swaps: Do you need it? When do you need it? How does it work? Today, we’ll answer those questions and a few more along the way. If there’s something we missed, let us know in the comments!

Jerry is a wizard with wiring. I was scratching my head when the low beams quit on my k10. I put in a LMC headlight relay harness to stop burning up the switches. I will dig into it tomorrow. Excellent white board work
You know it's going to be good when the whiteboard is out! 😁 Thanks Bill! Good luck with your headlights!
oh yeah another awesome video. this is so educational to everyone that watches the videos like me over and over lol. keep up the great content and excited for what is next!!
Thanks Wade! 👍 We appreciate all your support! --Emily and Jerry
I was just thinking about how to add tow/haul while working on my 1986 crew cab C30 6.0/4L80E swap. Outstanding video and information again as usual! Keep it coming and that sponsorship will happen for you guys. I promote your channel to everyone I meet that has LS swap questions. Thanks!!
We read your mind! 😄 Thanks so much, John! We really appreciate the support! 👋
Heyyyyyyy my ❤👩🏼🤝👨🏻❤favorite Truck Builders on UA-cam.. yall are Proven..we know this Truck will be done right when yall are finished.. with it, happy holidays.😄
You know it! 💪😎 Thanks for tuning in, Bernando! 👋

Love the video and content. Ya'll are doing a great service. My oil pressure on my 2005 2500hd 6.0 with a high volume melling oil pump runs the same. 80 at cold start, then around 50 or so running.
Thanks so much, Randy! How many miles are on your 6.0? We have a donor here with 450K and still runs like a top!
@UglyTruckExperience it had about 240000 when it hydro-locked a piston on startup. After the rebuild, I've only put 10k or so on it. It's not a daily driver, so it's very low miles per year now that I'm retired.
When I tore it apart to do the rebuild, it looked like a very low mileage engine. The iron block LS engines seem to be long-running beasts.
Great videos, learning more everyday. I’m swapping a Gen 3 6.0 into a Ford Ranger 4x4.
Thanks Scott! We appreciate you watching our stuff! --Emily and Jerry
0:40 MOUSE! 15:12 So Emily's family is from planet 'Serpo'? LOL! 20:50 He was really handy to have around.
🤣🤣 That's a big mouse! 🐭
My swap doesn't have a BCM. I do have a tow haul switch on my center console. If I ever want to hook it up I'll definitely reference this video. Guess I should hang on to the BCM out of my donor.
It might come in handy! 😁 Thanks Shady!
Great videos very informative on the bcm. Have you guys made a videos on how to wire the instrument cluster
Thanks Tito! We don't have a video on the instrument cluster, but several people have asked about it. We'll put it on our to-do list! We appreciate you watching our stuff. --Emily and Jerry
Thanks keep up the great work. And great ideas coming along
Great and informative video. I am swapping an 8100 into my '69 c20. Have you made a video showing how to make the dash work outside of the truck? I would like to do the same
Hey DK. We will put that on the to do list. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily
Hello, J&E That old C sounds so sweet! I like how you are simplifying wireing diagrams. Great help to us first timers. Body Cat Module 😂
Im getting close to a LS swap. Can you both come up to North east Canada and swap mine. Id like to figure out where to start a ls swap.
Thanks William! That would be a heck of a road trip from Missouri! 😄 What are you swapping?
@@UglyTruckExperience during the summers I drive a 94 C1500, I'm working on a 84 C10 Stepside for dissemble then GO from there 🙏
The goat 🐐
Thanks Casey! 🤘😎 We appreciate you watching our stuff!
If your running a BCM you could also run all the security stuff so you wouldn't have to disable VATS. Sure is easier if it's deleted though.
Hello Shady. I am planning to do that on my own truck coming up this year, just for fun. Thanks for watching. Jerry
I want to swap the rearview mirror from my donor Silverado over to my 94 S10 5.3 swap project. Ive got the mirror and temp sensor with somenof the wiring. Would be nice to have outside temp and a compass in a older vehicle.
It's on your phone😐
@@jimmywarledo4930 I'm aware. I just want to do it.
We have a truck here that we would like to do that same thing. I am going to be using the temperature and light sensor on this one, so adding the mirror wouldn't be to difficult. I love a challenge. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Please show how to wire a stand alone tow haul mode light if not using the original gauges.
It's not really something you can do. The cluster receives data from the BCM that tells it to turn on the light, so unless you're willing to swap the cluster in, there's no way to decode the serial data.
I was thinking about this... they make momentary switches that have a built in light on a separate circuit. Maybe something like that could work?
Hello John. The problem is that the ECM controls whether the tow/haul mode is really on. Without it sending a message from through a data signal to a module that would indicate it is working, you wouldn't know for sure. Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperienceJerry! Hey brother! Yeah, I understand ya. I was talking for more of a dummy/reminder light that the T/H button had been pushed. The light won't tell you if the function of the ECM is working, but rather that you pushed/flipped the switch you wired up to turn on T/H mode. Even now that I write this, I don't know 100% if this is possible because if the data wire gets hit with 12v when you turn on the switch it's game over... LOL.
Great video
Thanks Hustler! We appreciate you tuning in!
I recently swapped my 1997 Chevy Silverado from a v6 to a 5.7L v8 from a 1998 Chevy suburban when I drive it tends to throw the gears and not shift properly after I rebuilt the 4l60E transmission took off the harness from the 98 suburban with the engine maybe the wiring is slightly different from a 97 Silverado from a 98 suburban
Hello Krazy. Going from a V6 to that V8 would definitely have some different wiring. If not, as far as the transmission is concerned it might just be a matter of having it tuned for whatever the set up is that you have. I bet that 5.7 has a bit more power though. Jerry
Thanks!
Thanks so much, Christopher! We appreciate your support! 👍👍
do you need the BCM for tow haul mode? I tossed mine out when I stripped my donor vehicle... any benifits using tow/haul mode if the ls swap is in a caprice thats not towing at all?
Hey Carl. You wouldn't need to have that mode if your not going to be towing anything. We appreciate you watching. Thanks. Jerry
When Im diagnosing electric problems the first thing I do is cut those solder seal connectors off and tell the customers to never let people use them, too many intermittent bad connections when the solder melts but just sits on the wire and does not penetrate the strands. Works one minute then cuts out with vibration and temperature change. nothing screams amateur more than those things. When soldering wires or pipes etc you actually heat the wire or the pipe and the radiant heat will melt the solder and it will flow toward the heat. Solder seal does the opposite which is a bad idea from the beginning
Hey Derek. I would agree with you to some point. Up until the amateur comment. I have had problems with most types of connections that I do and have done them all. Deciding which one to use is just something that a person has do and go through that learning curve on there own. I just want people to get out there and do it no matter what and learn from their experience. I have wired thing and had them fail over time that ended up being the greatest learning experience for me. I am sure you have to. Thank you for watching and I do appreciate you commenting. Jerry
Hey my friends.
Hi Bobby! 👋👋
Good evening how are you guys doing today
Hi Alonso! We're good! How have you been?
Does the tow/haul indicator in the gauge cluster receive its signal via the data wire? If instead it just gets a (+) or (-) signal from the pcm OR bcm to light the bulb, couldn’t you just run a universal indicator bulb on the dash? There’s gotta be a way to isolate that signal to have a stand alone signal…
The BCM only sends a data signal, unfortunately. The light is illuminated by the cluster's internal module via data only. No voltage signal.
There is a guy that makes a module to run an indicator light along with momentary switch to activate tow haul mode. He calls it a swap smart module. There is a video about it and has a group on Facebook.
If your handy with electronics you could make up a latch circuit with a LED indicator to show when it's in Tow Haul mode.
Could you send a link to that smart module? I am not finding it. Thanks. Jerry
Heres the link to his u tube video.ua-cam.com/video/ioKq0fuSx7U/v-deo.htmlsi=PN_7TbLEyaqo0qmm He has a group on Facebook you would order it thru by direct message. Group is LS Droid and his name is Pete Sonntag creator of LS droid software. Search in his group smart module tow haul mode.@UglyTruckExperience
Need a t shirt. I wired my truck with UTX
That would be a good one! 😆 Thanks Scott!

How about stating what the BCM does?
It controls things on the body. 😂
It does so many things now and the list just keeps getting bigger. I will definitely need to get into that in upcoming videos. Thanks. Jerry
