Returning Home to a Jungle of Peas, Carrots, Basil & One Zucchini after Hot Days
Market Gardening in Southeast Alaska
Notes Week Ending August 9
Another week of nice weather in the 70s after a week of hot weather when I was gone last week. Large orders of some items, especially of carrots and more lettuce mix than usual with a few new customers. All three refrigerators stocked completely full with veggies. Check garlic and only about three leaves have died back, so will harvest next week after another forecast of dry weather; garlic maturing later than last year. Also, first week seeing ripe berries on the SW Hugelkultur raspberry plants.
Greenhouses:
GH2 a lot of basil growth after hot weather all previous week. Getting almost one ounce of basil per plant and estimate that I could harvest from both beds a total of about thirty larger 3-oz size bag this week, but only receive orders for 20 bags. Radishes planted at bed ends for slugs are mature to harvest if they had been grown for a crop. GH2S Orach harvest one row for lettuce mix. GH1 basil is not quite ready to harvest - definitely started and planted a little too late. GH1W three zucchini plants have one nice size fruit that I pick for myself and a few others growing nicely after most had been rotting during cool, wet weather.
Herbs & Onion Family:
NE3A Parsley continue harvest (about the right size bed at 20 feet) & NE3B Dill able to get a small harvest (forgot to activate dill in Food4All, so only get orders for a few bunches, so turn 10 smaller bunches into 5 larger ones, and sell them all), NE3B Cilantro second planting of tiny starts in soil blocks did not make it through the hot weather and some appear to be eaten by slugs. NE4A Leek harvest of a few bunches for personal use from plants that are already much bigger than last year, and NE4B Green Onion second patch harvest for the first time, although they could have been harvested previous week.
Peas:
Previous harvest before traveling from NE1 Pea harvest ~6 lb; this week NE1 harvest ~8 lb. NE2 harvest for the first time ~8 lb, which could probably have been harvested for the first time last week. Some NE2 vines fell over and need to be retrained up trellis and dead ones removed. Sell peas in one-pound packs instead of the smaller 4 oz and 8 oz options in order to sell the larger quantity, but sell out too quickly.
Lettuce Mix:
End up composting excess Green Salanova lettuce tub ~5 pounds from the previous harvest along with two bags of uneaten personal use lettuce mix. Harvest lettuce after sun starts to go down and greens bubbler & bag late into the night. NE5A Green Salanova (accidentally only seeded green) heads ready to harvest last week are big this week, so only harvest half of the patch ~10 feet for about 16 pounds and then mix with GH2S Orach ~0.5 lb, NE7A Mizuna two rows ~2 lb, and NW1A(1) BChard half of a patch ~5 feet ~1.5 lb. Sell more lettuce mix this week than typical. NE5B Salanova not quite ready to harvest this week.
Carrots:
NW4 Carrot Yaya harvested once before, selecting for large size only, and this week continue harvesting almost the full bed all carrots regardless of size to try and clear bed for NRCS tunnel buffer, and note that most carrots were a decent size. Sell a lot of carrots 52 bunches with bunches about 1 pound weight checked later without tops.
Greens:
Way too much kale growing in one bed of Toscana and small path of Dazzling blue, and need to harvest & freeze some for myself. Seeing a few caterpillars in kale, but not much. Too much chard for what I'm selling, and plants are looking nice with insect netting and slug boards. Collard greens are turning light green color as they've done in the past this time of year.

Normally I hand-write my garden logs, but a few weeks back I decided to be more efficient and type the notes into the computer then paste them in with the video, getting both garden notes and video summary done at the same time. Mercies as thank you sister Lord lovinn' Ivy (inn chwrist gsus' creativity inn deed). Note of hope only and ONLY two be taken for the grain of salt; Competition is already won knot two compete. As: I personally believe one should be saling as the price as what the 'corporate' stores are saling........ It is knot for the love of booty/money but for the love of life and of course, death. Gotta have one because the other would make one realize what's really g(r)o(w)inng on. For example: I "personally" witness 'locals' saling as if they have a big bill two pay. I am a total virgin/novice about many things but aGAIN, i witness 'local' FOODS that are in the rich person's reach....... A gallon of local milk is 7-10.00? I just was blessed two purchase three bunches of Kale, prpl Broccoli, and spinach and the price was/is four dollars for a bunch. Competition? I would assume. If one is saling two compete then....the growth inn maturity is lacking i believe and assume. Knot perfect but consider WHY one knot saling at the same price that someone CAN AFFORD. I personally would look at the food market and follow what is reasonable and efficient and sustainable if it were me. Every person has talent and skill given from the bill and grill maker of course. Knot one is better than the other and all have gifts given from the gifter two wrap and unwrap with, for the love of gawd's. I know this is a bunch of rant and is knot precise but, point being is this: Why compete when the war(monger) already won two win with. Producing two provide is a gift from above (landing soft as a dove). Yes. Money is needed but first, what is provided for the vibe is always abundant two give back..... For example: Look at the food prices on a wal mart, carrs, freds, three bears, etcetera website. Who is going two buy their product versus a double priced food product. I would buy local goods but if I couldn't afford it what would others due all sew of they'd witness goods they could afford. Would you believe this. I was blessed two purchase a Pro Max 12 iPhone three years ago. Priced at 1300.00. It is now valued at 500.00. The MAIN reason I purchased and willed two purchase this Pro Max 12 iPhone, is because the sales pitch said, "three day battery life". Naive and a simpleton I am. Theories are tested and sum are facts found and then others are knot granted two understand or simply IGNORED. The game of life, price, and death is inn the eye of the one who gives gifts two wrap and unwrap with in deed. I apologize for writing sew much when the precision for the vision can be poured on..... Don't compete but give two the ones who can afford and all will g(r)o(w) accordingly i due believe. There. Blame gawd as praise gsus' for the sword that whets.....for sharpening. sWORDS: Genesis 3:24. Three nights and days gawd was, sew called inn the grave (the room of tempting temptations and satanic strategies and the demon's demonologies) but rose (already done) from those grave(ly thoughts) and conquered death.....and stays with us twenty four hours a night and day providing the vibe and doesn't care for the jive..... Just look at the local prices versus the corporate prices and just think, who would purchase the one versus the other? Oh death, where is thy sting is what mocks humans/the demons with inn with...... sHe allsew laughs and says, "why gsus', why, did you forsake me"? Gawd never leaves us but we leave the godly sense that always hath heavenly results. Sense that always owns change. Now here a coin rattle. Well: Thank you and mercies aGAIN for the sweat, blood and tears gawd allows us two shade inn...... The garden is just bursting with all sorts of beautiful veggies! Can't believe those pea vines. Leaning tower of pea vines as was mentioned LOL! What's noticeable to me right now is the large variety of things you have growing -- thinking of dill and peas and garlic along with the staples -- lettuce, orich, baby chard. I didn't see the zucchini -- are they still doing their thing? And the little pansies -- OMG they were so beautiful. I loved the little shout out to those who comment and to me, yur MOM. I love watching your videos, one thing I noticed is you are so precise on everything and your produce when you're ready to sell looks perfect! I do farmers markets and I have never seen anyone's produce look so good and presents so well. I strive to have everything looked as good as yours. I do sell a very high volume of things so achieving your perfection is pretty unattainable to me. I'll keep watching as long as you're making videos

Thank You! I would actually like to be less finicky and work more quickly harvesting and processing the produce, and even reduce the level of garden documentation that I do, so that I have more time to do other projects that I want to get done. High volume without perfection is great! I'm hoping to get more efficient at what I do 🤪🥕

Oh my gosh! So much produce! Gorgeous garden this year, Kath. Lotso garlic scapes for your own use. That will be nice. Too bad there was a low turn out of buyers, but I'm sure you're right that the cold wet weather had a lot to do with it. CARROTS!!!!! Beautiful! And your peas! Geeze, I could just go on and on. So, you're in the thick of it now. I can't wait for when you have both your high tunnel done and your cool storage in your basement. That will make such a tremendous difference, I'm sure. Getting them set up, however, will be a chore (and a headache, I'll bet) and I know you know that, but it'll be worth going through the process. Hopefully, both projects will go fairly smoothly. Okay, keep on keepin' on. Luf you. Mom

I snapped off the woody part of the garlic scapes and we are able to use the rest in our pasta sauce. I think I'll use our food processor that I rarely ever pull out in order to get them all chopped up for the freezer. The garden is doing really nicely. I'm feeling a bit like I'm one step behind everything that I need to do, but I'm managing. Yeah, it's going to be a chore to get the tunnel up and cold storage completed, but it will be so much better when I have them set up. Luf You 🤗💛🌱
