D&D History, DM Advice, & TTRPG Reviews
I've been playing tabletop RPGs since 1981 and reading comic books even longer. Here I'll talk about TTRPGs, Comics, Fantasy, Science-Fiction and other Geek Stuff, including product reviews, game history, and details on the 1981 Moldvay Basic ("B/X") Dungeons and Dragons game I'm running for my (currently) 13 YO daughter and her friends that I started for her when she was 11 during the pandemic lockdowns.

Speaking of dual class and multi-class. We felt dual class was dumb and rarely used it. A 5th lvl fighter forgetting how to fight until suddenly remembering upon reaching 6th lvl as a magic user? Nahh dude. We multi- classed, including the prerequisite levels of ftr/thf when building towards a 1st ed bard.
Great video! Savage Worlds question for you. I love the Transformers but dislike the recent RPG for it. It has some great ideas but the mechanics seem clunky. Would you see SWADE as a viable option for a Transformers campaign (either in the classic Earth-setting or heavy sci-fi)? Interested in any general thoughts... maybe Savage Worlds Rifts would help?
I'd love to see a video on your take on Deities & Demigods since it has multiple versions due to the issue of rights over the chuthulu mythos and the agreement with Chaosium. Along with later changes to appease BADD such changing the name of the book to Legends & Lore. If anything the book seems to have some rich history and controversy behind it that should make an entertaining tale.
I had a ton of these books u til my Mom saw a 20/20 show that was saying D&D was Devil workshop and my Mom threw out all my books.!! So pissed. So now I’m buying them back.
You look pretty much exactly what I expected you to look like :) Over on the Shadversity channel, he recently did a video discussing the problems besetting his and other related channels, and he talked about some of the D&D channels that have been told straight up to their faces by youtube that their videos will no longer be recommended by the algorithm. Their channels can still exist, people can still find videos by searching for the appropriate key words, but youtube is not going to help them out any more. That's a de facto death sentence on a channel. And the channel owners said they were stopping work on those channels as a result. It's impossible to know what youtube is trying to accomplish, it's not even obvious that they know, but one thing is for sure: it is not longer a place for you to broadcast yourself. Hasn't been for some years, actually, but they still keep making it harder and harder for everyone who isn't already a giant media corporation.
I don't mind vlog-style videos at all, but I do think your format where you showcase a book and actually flip through it is a tremendous resource. I am quite interested in old-school games, but I'm too young to have actually been around playing them back then (I started at the tail end of D&D 4e in college, but the vast majority of my time as a dm and player has been in the 5e era, and most of my friends are only interested in 5e). The D&D version history video you made was really enlightening to me because you actually demonstrated the books and sets physically, and even in this video the part where you showed OSE and the "sequences" sections was awesome and helps me understand the appeal of that system more, though I have no experience with it personally. I would certainly watch stuff from you that is more like other dungeontubers' work, but I think of your channel as the one that treats the books and sets as material artifacts, and I think that is a unique and valuable thing!
Maybe this can help you regarding what to do with the channel in the future. But what I appreaciate more about your videos is not the history for history's sake, but rather some game mechanics concepts that may have been forgotten but could be used for the present. One video of yours for example (I think something Ravenloft) had a list of methods for Stat generation which included one I liked a lot (7+1d6) and went ahead with it for a ttrpg I am designing (I later dropped it tho but thats besides the point lol).
PD: Maybe the history of D&D is running short, but the history of TTRPGs in general... I will be waiting the inevitable Fighting Fantasy video.
Thank you for doing this. Very insightful. I’ve read most of these but I still learned some things!
Veiwers should be aware this is a pro dave channel.
The last five minutes of this video are something else. Really brings back memories of people I've lost.
Thank you for watching that part. I know quite a few people stop watching at that point.
@@daddyrolleda1 It's no problem. It's hard to get folks to keep watching without skipping certain parts. I had a feeling that you would bring your Dad up and wanted to be respectful, in my own way.
@@daddyrolleda1 Frankly, I am also making my own videos and will resume with another book review soon.
You have good taste in vinyl records.
Thank you! I found a few original mono US pressings of a couple Beatles albums I didn't have (Rubber Soul and Meet the Beatles) and also a mono pressing of "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel in my dad's collection. I actually think they belonged to his new wife's collection, but they're in pretty good shape. Since the Beatles are US Pressings, they're not worth anywhere near as much as they would be if they were UK pressings, but it's still cool to add them to my collection.
@@daddyrolleda1 I try to collect newer vinyl records over the vintage kind. I don't necessary listen to my Victrola for the vintage quality (though it may be a factor) but mainly due to my fascination with analog technology over screen or "invisible" technology.
RIP to your Dad, as always. Take care!
Thank you very much.
Nice face reveal. I think you're good here. Don't worry about being "expressive." Just be yourself, I suppose.
I appreciate that!
@@daddyrolleda1 of course!
I like resource management, but I don't mind abstracting it a bit. Slot inventory, like in LotFP or Lion & Dragon, and usage dice, from Black Hack, for consumables.
Yes, I definitely agree with this approach. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I love the history videos, but your other videos are great too. I think the joy you have for the topics your covering comes through in all of them and makes them compelling. Re resources: The only non spell slot resource I ever remember tracking in Ad&d days way back when were daggers on my thief. I had 4 and if I threw them all, well, time to take out the scimitar and/or run away and hide.
"Time to take out the scimitar..."! Classic! It's so funny how my players think about resources and equipment. I don't read over their sheets - I trust that they're doing things correctly. But I found out during one session that the thief player was carrying both a crossbow *and* a regular bow. I had to explain to her why that was at best redundant, and at worst, cumbersome and theoretically would impede her ability to hide, move silently, and climb. While there are no B/X rules penalties for that kind of thing, it seemed reasonable to impose a penalty. She had no idea the crossbow was "regular size." She was envisioning a small, one-handed crossbow like the one carried by the Huntress in DC Comics. It was a fun discussion!
Wow , I forgot all about the Hidden Shrine is Tamoachan! This is a trip down memory lane. I spent many hours looking at all this stuff and DMing for my friends.
Glad to have provided you some fun nostalgia! I hope t see you stick around for some of my other videos. Cheers!

Tomb of Horrors for me.. I’ve got a soft spot for undead , especially Lichs
It's definitely a classic!
Turn that frown upside down!
Ha! I didn't realize I was frowning!
Just watching this one now… great stuff Martin! Here’s my recent bonehead DM move… my PCs infiltrated a remote Orc village that was holding 3 prisoners: an Elven Fighter/ Thief, who was going to join the group (new player) and two female prisoners. All three were kidnapped from the same city as the PCs… my big mistake?? Since this remote Orc outpost was at least a day + from home, through dangerous territory, the PCs naturally insisted on escorting them back… but even a bigger screw up was not having anything prepared in their home city, as they wanted to check in with various officials and get guidance/ investigate plot leads….😂 I had nothing… I spent two hours making up stuff to fit with their logical reasoning to bring the females back and check in with a bunch of NPCs😂
Oh my goodness, I can totally relate to this! It happens frequently which is why I've tried to learn to be a little more flexible in my prep and have a lot of good random tables handy for inspiration (even if I don't roll on them, I can glance at a table for ideas). I also frequently employ the, "Do you all need a bathroom or snack break? Now's a good time as there's a short break in the action..." and I give them 15 minutes or so to check their phones, get snacks, and I do some super quick prep! How the session go? Did the players ever figure out that you were improvising as you went along? 😀
@@daddyrolleda1 The session actually went pretty well as I had to come up with some shadowy NPC bad guys (whom I could flesh out later) when the PCs were doing detective work on missing citizens/ substance abuse in Hochoch (hometown of PCs and the rescued prisoners) … so based on the testimony of the male (a brand new PC) and female prisoners of who took them, where in Hochoch , etc.. that gave them some clues for questioning certain NPCs at certain places in Hochoch… so I made up their testimonies and the NPC’s interactions with the PCs interrogations on the fly… about 2 hours of tight lipped 😜 witnesses giving vague remembrances and also some mysterious and strange encounters with drug-addled citizens in a drug hovel Good times Great Oldies
Stick with the "everything D&D before 3rd edition". 🎉
Well done. Takes a lot of courage to do this and so glad to hear about your daughter, hopefully, thriving now! Hope to see you at DaveCon again!
Fully agree with your points about resource management and I also view it as another challenge the party has to face. I have incorporated certain (not overburdening) ideas that include the food/water but also, armor health as an example.
Very sorry to hear about the loss of your father. Wish you and family strength and peace as you work through it.
Thank you so much for all these nice comments. I appreciate your support regarding my daughter, and also your sympathies for my dad. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching!
I honestly love any and all content. I love the history and thing it’s very interesting and will them as they continue to be made. I enjoy the DM advice as well. Hearing about any aspects of other’s games I think can help inspire and make us (or myself) a better DM. Personally, I think being content with a knowledge base on DMing is perfectly fine but striving to sharpen your game or your ability to DM even just a bit is half the fun and always worth it. So I would love to see more DM advice videos. I also just enjoy hearing about game design. Comparing core mechanic of different TTRPGs to others is very interesting to me. Especially, love the videos! Keep up the great work!!
if you keep it interesting then I'll keep listening, don't even have to be D&D
Thanks so much for the support! I really appreciate it!
Hey man, love your videos. Thank you for sharing your awesome historical knowledge about this hobby we all love. My condolences about your father. Your content never fails to not only give me inspiration for my games but reminds me of the things that are valuable in our everyday lives too. Thanks for that.
This comment really touched me. Thank you so much. It's really good to know that people are inspired by my content. I also really appreciate your kind words about my dad. Thanks a ton.
I enjoy the historical details of your videos and more importantly I see you weave in details in how you would use the subject of what you are discussing into game play. Sometimes I get a whole new view on how to include what it is you are discussing into my DM'ing experience. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Thank you so much for saying this! That's honestly a big reason behind the channel and I feel that "history" and "advice" videos aren't mutually exclusive. I'm glad you've found them helpful and inspirational in your games. Thanks a ton for watching and commenting. Cheers!
Great video, format is just fine, I appreciate seeing the documents. I like all your q & a videos. Keep it up.
I really appreciate this comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!
Just my personal humble perspective; I actually think channels that choose to put things on the screen other than their face feel more authentic to me, maybe because it feels less self aggrandizing? Not sure. That said I don't find it offensive or anything, but just to say if you choose to stay with your established style of presentation, I think it's only a bonus as far as I'm concerned. You do you!
Fair enough. For this one, I just felt like when talking about "Do I ever get tired of making TTRPG content?" I couldn't really think of an effective thing of showing a book or whatever to illustrate my point. So I figured it was an opportunity to try something different. My intent isn't to "switch over" to only showing my face, but rather knowing if people are cool if I do it occasionally if the topic warrants it.
@@daddyrolleda1 Yeah, you explained as much in the clip, just figured I'd share my feeling. 👍
I liked your old videos better. Just be honest and say you met UA-camrs at the Con and now you want to monetize your channel. You said everything but that but the intention is obvious. I liked you videos bc they were different than the other cookie cutter, sell shit to everyone style. Stick with what made your channel grow. IMO
Hey Martin! You can't please everyone all the time, so do the videos you think are important and enjoyable for you. If you film it, the audience will come! Though maybe I'm an old fool and the Algorithm is too powerful! As a longtime reader of your blog, you got a fan in me! For myself, I'm creating a YT channel and I'm not really concerned about getting followers as much as I want to use it to network with other gamers.
Oh, very cool! I just subscribed. Cheers, and good luck with the channel! Also, thanks for your kind words and support!
Make videos you are are passionate about and I guarantee we all keep watching. I love your history videos but I am also eager ro hear about your home brews, DM tips, opinions, etc.
Thank you so much for letting me know! I really appreciate it.
I have personally loved your magazine reviews. I hope you can come up with the click-bait titles for them so they get more popular for you.
Thanks for that feedback! I definitely intend to keep making them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
An excellent video! On the on-camera segments try to keep your eyes along the upper third line so you don’t look like you’re trying to run out of the video!
I will try to remember that! I was really a challenge to know what to look at, especially because I'm not reading a script but talking off the cuff, so my eyes kept wandering all over the place, just like they do when I'm just chatting with a friend.
@@daddyrolleda1 I do it all the time!
Your most recent video brought me here!
Excellent! I hope you enjoyed the video. If memories serves, that was only the second video I'd ever made, so going back to it, you can get a sense of the change in style.
I got into Savage Worlds last year. More dungeon tubers should cover it. It is a great system.
It really is a fun, and different, system. I quite enjoy playing it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
39:51 oh the magic is ruined. Here I thought this channel was a pair of hands and a Voice in The Ether 🙂.
😀Hopefully it wasn't *too* much of a disappointment! One commentor said he much preferred when I don't show my face. I wasn't sure how to take that!
First time - that I remember, anyway - UA-cam has recommended your content to me. Clearly you must've done something right (or very wrong!! LOL). Enjoyed hearing your thoughts.
Oh, fantastic! I'm glad you found the video and that you enjoyed it. I do hope to see you stick around and to chat with you in the comments again. Cheers!
2E forever 😎.
It's definitely a very popular system, much more so than I realized when I began blogging about old school D&D over a decade ago!
@@daddyrolleda1 I think a lot of 2E being popular is it has a lot of sourcebooks for it. And it is a bit more refined then the earlier editions. They also printed a LOT of all the 2E books, you can still find most of the books at low prices. The last system before the Internet.
Ooh, that's so true (being the last system before the Internet) but I never really thought of it that way!
20:33 Why does anyone need so many of these "rules"? 🤔 We're playing pretend. This is the opposite of the way we played in the early 80s with BX.
I LOVE games where the game only cares about the mechanical aspect of powers, the trappings get left to the player. I’m gravitating more and more to systems which encourage it!
Absolutely! It was a real eye-opener when I saw it in Savage Worlds and then immediately wondered to myself, "Wow, you mean we don't need 18 different 'Wall of...' spells that all functionally do the same thing?" Part of the reason, and I do get this, is that the D&D rules engine (no matter which edition, once you get past OD&D and Basic D&D) is that certain creatures have immunities, so it's important to know, for example, that a Frost Giant is immune to cold but vulnerable to fire, so the kind of energy your wall uses will impact how the Frost Giant interacts with it. I do get that, but it does add a lot more complexity and also takes up so much space in a book when you need six different "Wall of..." spells, each taking two or more paragraphs plus a stat block to explain how they work.
Savage Worlds is cool. There are a LOT of rolls.
I love that they figured out a way to use all of the polyhedral dice but in a system that is completely different from D&D.
@ yes. Very cool.
Oh Martin, the historical essays in the OAR series are right up your alley. If you see them, since they’re out of print now, check them out!
That is one of the things I did think about and that almost made me buy those books. I wish the essays were available as a separate purchase without the rest of the book, as I just couldn't justify the cost or shelf space for something I was never going to use and for which I was only going to read a very small percentage of.
@ yah. I don’t he the originals any more so it was easier for me.
Bob’s a kind person.
He comes across that way on screen, for sure.
The commercial was made in Brazil. Despite the fact D&D came very late here with some people bringing books from America. And it took several more years for the first translated version of the game. We love D&D. One of the most successful Brazilian RPGs is an OSR game called old dragon.
Thanks for the confirmation, and for sharing this history! I haven't heard of "Old Dragon" but I do know that Brazil has a pretty big OSR community.
Man, I would love to watch a video, where you go through and compare and contrast every version of D&D rules in a structured manner, but bet that is not your cocktail. 😅
I am doing that, kind of. I only started recently but so far I've covered what's different in Holmes D&D versus Original D&D: ua-cam.com/video/5-GkGIZwnXI/v-deo.htmlsi=HVl-wo9gz1vf0RWC and also differences in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons vs Original & Holmes, starting with the Monster Manual: ua-cam.com/video/35c1-5qdS5I/v-deo.htmlsi=NuiunsZW9kOb_pvz (the Advanced D&D differences/comparison is going to span at least two if not three videos). You might also be interested in the differences that the supplements made to Original D&D: ua-cam.com/video/yI730kEhBKM/v-deo.htmlsi=37p2ol2VwUxBLPV4 and ua-cam.com/video/wfbOInciSko/v-deo.htmlsi=HRU9kFgeKs4X14zR.
@daddyrolleda1 Cool! Thanks for the links! It is sonetimes hard to find things on youtube.
For sure! I hope you enjoy them!
I lost all my old modules. A "friend" stole them. 😢
Oh, no! That's horrible! I'm sorry to hear that.
@daddyrolleda1 Yeah, a real bummer. A chunk of your childhood gone, but it could be worse. I think of what some other people have been through and I feel lucky!
That's a very healthy attitude to have. I hope you at least have some fond memories of playing and/or running those adventures back in the day.
@daddyrolleda1 I do, but it is odd you know? Apart from Sinister Secret of Salt Marsh, The Village of Homlet, Cult of the Reptile God, White Plume Mountain, The Gauntlet, the Hidden Caverns of Tsojcanth, Tomb of the Lizzard King, I did not run many modules. I usually came up with my own adventures. I played in a lot of modules, but that's different.
Loading this up as I go to sleep but wanting to give a comment and like. I'll watch it 100x in the future. Keep it up man.
Thank you so much for your support! I really appreciate it!
I would like to see you cover specific modules in the long form that you do. Captcorajus's videos are too short for someone that wants to run the module. His stuff is like the 1000' level.
That is certainly something I can add to my list of potential future topics. I did cover the history of the first module published by TSR, Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, here: ua-cam.com/video/H6V7Pd8QgkY/v-deo.htmlsi=L8GPyPcLvK5Ae0mN
Have you looked at Shadowdark? Listening to you talk about resource management and light sources, I think you’d really like it. Edit: Haha as soon as I hit post, you talked about it. I highly recommend it. Lots of great tables; very fast and gritty system. The free quick start rules are very robust and give a great feel of what you’d be getting into. Cheers
I played Savage Worlds for the first time last night. We too did a Weird War II type scenario, but our team was a bit more like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I played a young, warrior nun from Ireland. It was a very diverse group including a Nazi killing robot. Lots of fun. I could see how it could easily fit any genre. Most of us had tons of RPG experience but it was the first time for every player using the system. I could see introducing new players with this system. If they know the dice type and generally what an RPG is, I think they could play.
That sounds like such a fun game! The Nazi-killing robot idea reminds me of "G.I. Robot" from DC's "Creature Commandos." That's a great idea for a character in a game like that!
Love your content, you’re one of the best on the platform! Whatever you upload, I’ll watch!
I appreciate that so much! Thank you so much for your support of my channel and of me. Cheers!
@ Of course! Videos like yours are something I rarely see discussed on the platform, so please keep the great content coming!
