    I'm an old school gamer that started in 1981. I left the hobby in 1998 and didn't comeback until 2020 during the pandemic. Since then, I have gotten my wife and two grown children into the hobby and have started a second campaign with work friends. While I came back to 5E, I have since moved on to DCC, which I love. I'm a worldbuilder and I'm so glad I found your channel because I find your videos on D&D history inspiring. It sounds like you and I have similar stories with regards to D&D, and like you, I have quite a collection of old TSR books that I still love. Keep doing what you are doing Martin, because you are not only sharing the history of this great game and hobby to a new generation, but also entertaining us old gamers who look with nostalgia on the past. Your long form videos are my favorite and I look forward each week to see what you talk about next. Great job and thanks for all the hard work and effort you put into this channel and its excellent videos.

    Martin, congratulations on posting your 100th video. I've been a subscriber for over a year and it's great to see your channel grow and evolve. I love that you're sharing your favorite modules with us and for having the foresight to ask three other awesome guests to share their top D&D/AD&D modules too. Of the four of you, I think my favorites align best with Professor DM's choices and I was shocked no one else chose Ravenloft as a top pick other than him. And, no one chose S2 White Plume Mountain? Wow! It goes to show there are so many awesome modules from the 70s and 80s and this has invigorated me to start doing reviews of modules on my own channel. I love being a part of this community of players, DMs, and DungeonTubers. Although I've played D&D for 40 years, I always learn something new from you and others-both from watching videos and reading the comments. In fact, this video has inspired me to create my own video talking about my top 10. Thanks Martin! Happy gaming! -Joe from The Philosophy of Game Mastering.

      What a great comment! Thank you so much for sharing this all with me! I really appreciate it. I love this community, too, and I'm always happy that I seem to have cultivated a very nice group of people here who are kind, supportive, and creative!
      I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video, but S2 was the very first module I ever got, specifically because it was cheaper than the others (I seem to recall at my local toy store, S2 was $4.50 whereas most modules were $6.00; while that's not a lot of out-of-pocket cash, in a way, it means it was 25% cheaper!). I do like it quite a bit, but just like the other two S-series modules I mentioned more.
      I can Ravenloft recently for my friend (the dad player in my daughter's D&D group, if you've heard me mention him before), and had a blast. I do like it, but... I tend to gravitate more toward a pulpy aesthetic that's a bit more opened-ended.
      Thanks again for your support! And, leave me a link when you drop your video about your Top 10!

    Congratulations on your 100th ep! It was a great one. Most of my top 10 picks were covered between your four lists, other than a couple of lesser known ones, I3 - Pharaoh (the whole Desert of Desolation trilogy, really), and I8 - Ravager of Time.
    I also appreciate you highlighting Jim Holloway, my favorite RPG artist. I always enjoyed the way he could insert humor into what could be overly serious, dry depictions.

    Greetings fellow old D&D nerd. I love modules, they WERE my D&D in my teens as the fact that my group were scattered over our city, and we had a lot of schoolwork pressures, meant that creating a consistent regular campaign was nigh on impossible. I've reviewed many of them on my own channel, but for now, here are my top 5...
    1- UK3 The Gauntlet - it didn't get much traction in the US. It has a huge battle, a claustrophic and realistic-feeling keep, a good variety of enemies and puzzles - and drunk Gnolls!
    2- U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh - a perfect low level adventure, beautifully paced with unsurpassed attention to detail
    3- B4 The Lost City - imho the greatest of all B/X adventures, the plot hooks, the roleplaying potential, the atmosphere, all great
    4- G1/2/3 - a masterpiece in packing the most adventure into the fewest pages
    5- hmmm, errrmmm, lots I want to put here, but I'm going to go for the wacky wonderfulness of X2 Castle Amber
    (honourable mentions - UK4, S2, S4, WG4, D1-2, D3, X1, X4, I4, I6, T1, B10)
    I have an intense dislike for the Dragonlance modules - bleeeuuurgh, and don't rate S3 as highly as the rest of you!)

    • @daddyrolleda1
      @daddyrolleda1  23 дні тому

      Firstly, I've enjoyed many videos on your channel! Thank you so much for making them!
      I love your list! I have UK2 - UK4 but 2 & 3 were favorites, partially for the art, but I also loved that they used stuff from the rule books that other modules didn't use as often (if at all). Obviously I agree with you on U1, B4, S4, and X1).
      I do very much like the Giants/Drow series as well and I'm looking forward to running my daughter's group through them at some point. I was *this* close to putting X2 on my list as well, but at the last minute I swapped it for L2 just to get a different author/creator in my list. Of your Honorable Mentions, the only ones I'm not super familiar with are WG4 and B10 - I know of them, but never played/ran/read them.
      Thanks again!

      It's a fantastic adventure, for sure, and gets lots of love from folks. I sadly never had a chance to play it, as my local shop only carried official TSR stuff for some reason. For my list, I did tell my contributors to focus only on TSR adventures, as that's what I had access to as a kid and I wanted to see what they would pick.

    B2 Keep on the Borderlands suffers a bit from the fact that it doesn't have enough regular people. Sure, it can be explained away, but what I like to do is to add a village (such as T1 Hommlet) down at the base of the hill the keep sits on, and move most of the 'normal' buildings down there and having the castle more as a fallback position and housing the moneylender and the jeweler, for security. As for the Caves of Chaos, I like to explain them as abandoned mines, which does mean that the wilderness exploration gets somewhat short-circuited. But it was hard to understand how the rumor mill was so well informed, but totally unaware where the Caves are?
    The Caves of Chaos can become somewhat repetitive, too: select a cave system, fight the guards, fight the main group, meet the women and children, kill the boss. One idea was to spread a couple of the humanoid tribes around the wilderness map, too. This keeps things a bit more interesting. Also, the scale of the wilderness map needs some adjusting, too, and it is better if all humanoid caves are not within a rock's throw as well, so I would adjust the outside map for the Caves of Chaos, too.

    • @nobody342
      @nobody342 Місяць тому +1

      B2 in my opinion is probably the important module ever written, not because its the best, but it teaches a beginner DM and Player what they need to do. Back as a teen when we started in the late 70's we played the module several times before we started "spreading out" and making our own stuff. Yes, having a small village just out side of the keep should be done, ( I do it) and then also you need to add a larger town a few days journey away ( in the opposite direction that the "Borderlands are" which allows for a better place to buy and sell then the little hamlet, just outside the keep.
      To improve the the "caves" a person need the spread the individuale caves further away from each other, and enlarge them, and of coarse, be sure to have something behind the fallen rocks in the undead cave, as well as make a "cave of the unknown" .
      Yes, the distances are a little close for all the outside encounters, but a person is supposed to go thru the keep on the borderland, then sit down and use the basis of how to start YOUR own world, ie your own starting area.

    • @anarionelendili8961
      @anarionelendili8961 Місяць тому

      @@nobody342 I definitely agree that the advice at the start of the B2 is very important and useful to people starting to play and GM. Nor would I say that B2 is a bad module. Simply that it can be even better with a bit of tweaking, stuff like giving names to the NPCs. B10 is much better in that respect, actually giving the NPCs some personality, too. Sure, the GM can (and should) come up with that stuff on his own, but from my perspective, it is actually more helpful to have that info than how many gold pieces the NPC has in their pockets. Especially given how poor pickpockets the 1st level thieves are...
      I like to partially make away the Borderland feel, and instead have the road lead to a town a few days away, a shortcut. Thus, there are merchant caravans, which are threatened by the humanoids in the Caves of Chaos, explaining some of the captives as well as the need to do something about it.

    • @michaelwest4325
      @michaelwest4325 Місяць тому +1

      I did the same but seperated the caves into groups seperated by more wilderness, so A, B and C are at one spot, D, E and F, G by itself, etc. Trails connect them as do the rumors, so more reason to explore them in detail and more oppurtunity to guide the group from one to the next. And then I am linking the rest of the B modules into a greater world connected to this B2/T1 mash up!

      I always thought it would've been natural for WotC to create an MtG Campaign Setting for D&D and I'm surprised it took them so long!
      What got me into Magic was actually the stories on the cards! My best friend and I at the time, being "flush" with cash from living at home with our parents and having jobs, would buy a full box for each new release and then call each other after work to go over which cards we got and then swap with each other so that we could each get a full set (this was before I had access to the Internet at home, around 1993 or 1994). And we'd always talk about how cool the story was that was being told once you had the complete set of cards!

    Famine in Fargo, the Gamma World module, is one of the most memorable adventures I've ever run. The group I ran it for still talks about it over a decade later (14 years) and consider it the most fun they've ever had in any game. As a GM, Famine in Fargo brings out your inner Sam Raimi for running a horror comedy adventure. You start out very serious and delve into the dangerous and absurd. As a module, it plays well across multiple systems. I played the original and ran it for Gamma World 7e (aka 4e lite). I consider FiF the benchmark for horror comedy adventures.
    Campaign and Catacombs Sourcebook Guide is the best GM supplement ever written. Although it's an AD&D 2e supplement, I reread it every time I start a new campaign no matter what game or system I'm running. I recommend it to all GMs.

    I would have to say that my most memorable and enjoyable dungeon from "way back then" would have to be "Caverns of Thracia" from Judge's Guild. This cavern felt alive to me, and the different ways that levels were connected or could be accessed was new compared to just another set of stairs or another walkway up and down. It would the first time that a dungeon crawl actually gave me a sense of being 3 dimensional rather than just another 2d paper map dungeon. This was the first dungeon, after The Village of Hommlet, that felt alive to me. I enjoyed this both as a player, intrigued by the enormity of the place, and then as a DM fascinated by the intricacy with which this enormous place had been put together. It also launched me into a deep dive of other Judge's Guild products and allowed me to find products my players weren't familiar with since most of them simply focused on TSR as their main source of product.

    The medusa wandering monster. A combination of N1 & I2 w/ U2
    The evil priest, combine T1 & B2 w/ B1 as a smaller temple.
    Travis is corrupted in, B5 & L3 w/ Phandalin as Guido's Fort.
    Duchess and Candela run the L2 town, use it for U1 w/ tower of Zenopus and A0 outside of town and the rest of the A series as a Port Royale on X1.
    The Princess is changed to Rahasia going to the princess in B9 & B7.

In fact, I went so far as to build most of them on my Minecraft server to full size and scale so the players could actually walk around IN the dungeons instead of just looking down on a paper map or vtt. As I am a builder in real life, I made sure everything was fully functioning and structurally accurate right down to doors, windows and stair placement, making needed corrections as I went. It was a huge hit with the kids and yours might enjoy it as well. PM me and I will gladly send you the server codes. Thanks again for the great video.
