I've had a long love relationship with the Slant 6, so when my kids told me I needed to get a new car, I found a 1960 Valiant with the toilet seat faux spare tire ring on the Internet ( they said "new," but failed to mention what defines "new," it's new. Just old and new). It's black with the red interior, and I paid way too much for it, $10K, plus shipping, but it runs. It's going to swallow another $12K in bumper to bumper restoration and interior, but that still translates to its original 1960's retail price, and it is a pleasure to drive. All cars today look like melted chocolate bars that got pooped out of the same wind tunnel. The black is fiercely hot in the desert sun, so it's getting a repaint in cherry red. I'd thought about white, but white is such a common color. I was surprised, from this video, that they came with full-on white walls. I'm going to mention "Classic Car Deals" as the vendor. The way the car was appraised, it was in drivable condition with a broken speedometer and was pictured with intact upholstery. In reality, it was nearly a wreck on delivery, and the interior was completely destroyed from carpet to headliner. Fortunately, she still had the original knobs and the original tube-type radio (no transistors!), but otherwise, the appraisal was flatly dishonest. Anyone looking to buy a classic online, and there are many dealers, will be well advised to hire an independent appraiser to go over it and photograph the heck out of it. I feel that Classic Car Deals is not the only dealership exaggerating the car's condition. If they don't like me writing this and want to sue for libel, I got the receipts to prove what a wreck it is/was. But she will be looking fine once the last of it is restored.

My Dad bought a new one in 1960. I learned to drive it in 1970 and it was mine in 1971-73. Worst POS car I ever owned! But hey, it got me to high school and work. It was a V100 with three on the floor, no radio, no A/C, no right side view mirror, rubber flooring, and the engine knocked no matter what gas you put in it. It burned oil, despite our by-the-book maintenance. Ball joints were loose by 90,000 miles. It was notoriously unreliable. Once, the wiring harness caught fire when I hit a bump. That bump broke the rusty battery-hold-down strap, which shorted out to a frayed wire. Cabin filled with smoke. Fortunately, I was going about 10 MPH and the engine died immediately. The entire harness had to be replaced. Another time, the pin holding the pinion gear to the drive shaft sheared off, disconnecting the drive shaft from the rear wheels. Imagine putting the car in gear and letting the clutch out. The speedometer goes up to 20 MPH or so, before you realize the car isn't moving at all! Yeah. I never bought another Mopar. I bought a Toyota Corolla in 1977 when I graduated from college, and have driven nothing but Toyotas ever since. They've all been great.

My grandfather had one. I loved that car and so did he. He traded it in for a ‘’68 Satellite with a 383 and then he had a ‘72 Skylark then a ‘76 Regal then an 84 Cutlass. When I was in college in 1981 he and I went out one night on the town together when he was visiting us in town and let’s just say I was in shape to drive home when he drank me under the table so he drove us home in my’73 Duster and he said that it felt familiar. I told him it was because it was because it was pretty much the same car as his old Valiant.

Chrysler also made a couple of Hyper-Packs, aluminum 225 cubic inch motors. My best at the 1/4 mile was 11.06 on a winter morning at Fremont Raceway. Biggest problem was keeping air in the tires as low pressures were needed to get traction and not break the tire to rim seal. A friend and I ran the car at Bonneville in 1970 and got a one-way speed of 132 MPH. the clutch exploded and it was a one-way run. The car did make it through the measured mile. In fact, with a damaged clutch, (no release), we drove it 300 miles home rather slowly. That was the only failure of the car for the ninety thousand miles i had the car.

I really wish they had put the 410 4 V with just a little better exhaust manifolds. They had the parts on the shelf. The C6AER heads and the aluminum PI intake. Torque monsters. And even the 428 T-bird with the same heads only with LR 2.09/1.63 valves and the aluminum 4 and 2x4 intakes with Holleys. 66-67 GT and GTA could have been so much better. Even the GT/CJ cam. They would have been better on the street. I never understood it. A pair of 2.25 duals to the rear with resonators and muffler delete. They were THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CARS IN 66 and 67. They could have slapped around any 383 Mopar.

I love the video, but I hate to have to complain for the 8 millionth time, the name of the car is pronounced WILLIS, NOT WILLY'S, OR WILLIE'S. It was named after a man named John North Willys, pronounced WILLIS, who founded the company that made the car in 1908. Otherwise, wonderful video, great brochure, excellent information. Sorry for the rant, but it drives me crazy. Just saw Dave's comment below...sorry to double down...

My dad had a 62 GT, white with red interior. It didn’t have the hyper pack, but it did have the aluminum block 225. That made it a little peppier. In the winter, when the car was warmed up from driving and you stopped, say at the grocery store, that aluminum block would cool down and you had to start all over again with the heater.

There's a '70 Spoiler SCJ 4 speed with locker rear in a barn near me. I tried to buy the car from two different owners over a 20 year period. Long story short, I gave up in 2010 and bought a new Challenger. The car remains uncovered in an old barn nearby. A local bodyshop with a North America wide reputation went to appraise it, as the most recent owners wanted to borrow money against the car, and even though it remains rust free, original paint, no aftermarket radio or alterations or missing equipment, it did not appraise enough to get the money. It's green, black interior and all straight panels. The pigeon poop topping is a free "extra".

As a 13 year old, the 1970 Mercury Cyclone was a favorite, so much so that the all-new 1972 Mercury Montego really shocked me - they turned the Montego into a Continental. The 1972 Montego GT dwarfed my dads 1969 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Mercury took the Montego in the wrong direction, I wanted the slimmer, lighter weight Cyclone of 1970. America had gone "personal luxury" crazy during the 1970's and performance cars fell along the same path. Now I realize that 1970 was a performance milestone year - glad to be an aging eyewitness.
