I've had a long love relationship with the Slant 6, so when my kids told me I needed to get a new car, I found a 1960 Valiant with the toilet seat faux spare tire ring on the Internet ( they said "new," but failed to mention what defines "new," it's new. Just old and new). It's black with the red interior, and I paid way too much for it, $10K, plus shipping, but it runs. It's going to swallow another $12K in bumper to bumper restoration and interior, but that still translates to its original 1960's retail price, and it is a pleasure to drive. All cars today look like melted chocolate bars that got pooped out of the same wind tunnel. The black is fiercely hot in the desert sun, so it's getting a repaint in cherry red. I'd thought about white, but white is such a common color. I was surprised, from this video, that they came with full-on white walls. I'm going to mention "Classic Car Deals" as the vendor. The way the car was appraised, it was in drivable condition with a broken speedometer and was pictured with intact upholstery. In reality, it was nearly a wreck on delivery, and the interior was completely destroyed from carpet to headliner. Fortunately, she still had the original knobs and the original tube-type radio (no transistors!), but otherwise, the appraisal was flatly dishonest. Anyone looking to buy a classic online, and there are many dealers, will be well advised to hire an independent appraiser to go over it and photograph the heck out of it. I feel that Classic Car Deals is not the only dealership exaggerating the car's condition. If they don't like me writing this and want to sue for libel, I got the receipts to prove what a wreck it is/was. But she will be looking fine once the last of it is restored.

My grandfather had one. I loved that car and so did he. He traded it in for a ‘’68 Satellite with a 383 and then he had a ‘72 Skylark then a ‘76 Regal then an 84 Cutlass. When I was in college in 1981 he and I went out one night on the town together when he was visiting us in town and let’s just say I was in shape to drive home when he drank me under the table so he drove us home in my’73 Duster and he said that it felt familiar. I told him it was because it was because it was pretty much the same car as his old Valiant.

The Valiant seemed to share design cues with a Studebacher Lark at the time; particularly in the front grill area

I agree, they do look similar in the grill.

1966 Darlene Ruttman drove her two children from Dearborn, Michigan to Lynwood, California in a Valiant. Darlene got 3 flat tires! Darlene's Mother won that car in a raffle. Problem was, Lena didn't drive! Thusly my Mom received a Beautiful red Valiant from my Grandparents. My Goodness was that a beautiful car! By 1970 she was sold when we moved to a rental home in Long Beach, California. I get pretty excited when I see a Valiant! Not many around.

The Plymouth Valiant (1960-1976) has to be the best car ever made by Chrysler Corporation!

I was born in 1959 so I grew up looking at these cars. I took them for granted. We were a Studebaker family. They were quirky even then. But with time they just look so beautiful. When can we return to cars that have great happy colors in and out? Thank you.

Fascinating look at the original Valiant! If there was a problem with the Valiant, it may have cannibalized Plymouth sales for 1960, which in no small part contributed to the folding of Valiant into the Plymouth line in 1961. Amazing, too, that only the Valiant and the Studebaker Lark had three-seat wagons available in 1960!

You got amenities with Valiant not offered on Falcon, starting with power assists where you wanted them (brakes and steering), plus a handsome interior. I would have been won over, and chosen Valiant over Falcon in 1960.

These were sold in Australia, the first called the "R" series with the fake spare in the boot lid then the "S' without. All had the 225 slant 6 with about 140 hp,and I only remember seeing push- button autos.More power than the Falcon or Holden of the time, but thirsty.

Offered two engines the 170 which I felt was underpowered and the 225 slant six soon in aluminum too was fast and industry leader for years. Known for its extreme durability. As a dealer back in the 80's day of the darts at the dealer auctions the auctioneers would rarely comment on cars coming through the auction line, but invariably would say say something like 🦵 here comes another indestructible dodge dart.

The 225 /6 became optional mid year `61, after Valiant became a Plymouth model.
      All `60 Valiants had the 170 /6.
      I have a `61 Valiant V200 2-door hardtop, with the 170 /6.
The original buyer apparently wouldn't pay the $47.35 for the upgrade to the 225 /6.
      `61 also brought the V200 2-door hardtop and V100 2-door sedan.

An odd duck, especially the wagon. Chrysler was known for bizarre styling in the early 60's. But, I've always liked these, probably because my babysitter drove a white 4 door. They always reminded me of a melted Studebaker Lark, which I also liked. My Mom couldn't understand my tastes, I should only be interested in Corvettes?

@gcfifthgear: In fact, new "compact" Dodge Dart ate into unloved '60 Plymouth styling (also more hi-class Dodge name at little extra cost.) Valiant became Plymouth in '61 to boost division sales.

  • @johnellis2347

Had the car been offered in sporty styles like 2 Dr hardtop and convertable might have doubled sales and crushed the sales of the tinny ugly falcon and questionable corvair.

  • @arnepianocanada

1310 "...sales proved the Valiant's success," you say!? While not a flop, it was much less popular than Ford's new small Falcon (400,000+ sold) and I think Chev Corvair also.

My Dad bought a new one in 1960. I learned to drive it in 1970 and it was mine in 1971-73. Worst POS car I ever owned! But hey, it got me to high school and work. It was a V100 with three on the floor, no radio, no A/C, no right side view mirror, rubber flooring, and the engine knocked no matter what gas you put in it. It burned oil, despite our by-the-book maintenance. Ball joints were loose by 90,000 miles. It was notoriously unreliable. Once, the wiring harness caught fire when I hit a bump. That bump broke the rusty battery-hold-down strap, which shorted out to a frayed wire. Cabin filled with smoke. Fortunately, I was going about 10 MPH and the engine died immediately. The entire harness had to be replaced. Another time, the pin holding the pinion gear to the drive shaft sheared off, disconnecting the drive shaft from the rear wheels. Imagine putting the car in gear and letting the clutch out. The speedometer goes up to 20 MPH or so, before you realize the car isn't moving at all! Yeah. I never bought another Mopar. I bought a Toyota Corolla in 1977 when I graduated from college, and have driven nothing but Toyotas ever since. They've all been great.

Overall your videos are very good except when it comes to pricing everything in today's dollars. That is where I turn off the video. After a few comparisons why can't you just say something like "todays dollars are about 10 times as much"?

Put a 318 4bbl under the hood and this car could move like an ace. I took it as a joke. I just had trouble accepting things that are different. My apologies go out to Chrysler for poking fun of an ace vehicle.

The saddest thing to me was how boring and standardized they became in design by 1970! By the mid seventies you could hardly tell them apart from Dodge Darts!

Yeah. Even as an eight year old in 1960 who loved building model cars I remember saying that the Valiant was "dumb looking". I still think so.
