for people looking for a daggerfall like game barony is really really good btw
Starfield hardcore 🤣🤣🤣
With how awful Starfield is, I lost all hope and hype for ES6 and I just don't care anymore.
why are you calling them "scrolls-likes" when everything revolves around combat? the point of daggerfall and morrowind was that you could truly play as a thief or bard, never setting foot in a dungeon
Dread Delusion too.
The dialogue is straight up reddit rambling, making this unplayable for me.
They better work as 3rd person too if they want to be scrollslike
"-like" is just like "-pilled", it's jsut senseless zoomerspeak
I was introduced to the Elder Scrolls with Daggerfall. You have no idea what it's like to go from playing Doom and Duke Nukem which were its peers, to something like the Elder Scrolls. My exact thoughts were. "Oh shit, this is like Doom, but I can do anything!" I remember freaking out that it took up 500mbs to install which at the time was half of my parent's PC storage lol. I didn't really like Morrowind, because it went from being a medieval fantasy game, to weird mutant dogs and giant jellyfish. Oblivion felt like a return to form, and Skyrim was pretty cool. If Daggerfall wasn't so buggy, and samey, it would be the best in series. Arena sucked pretty bad though.
"Scrolls-Like" is a genre I can get behind. I play BGS games in 3rd person tho, I do not like first person much, but I wouldn't put that on smaller Indie devs
Emil Pagliarulo is a hack, and Todd Howard is a soulless corpo. I hate the way Skyrim went. I severely dislike the way Oblivion was going. Maybe if Bethesda was still good, we'd have a healthier gaming industry. It was Oblivion that introduced microtransactions into the singleplayer game, period.
Was so eager to play something Scrolls-like.. searched... searched more... As a result - tried Nehrim which broke at some point :"( (steam version). Now playing Skyrim Bruma - great addon :) Thanks for this new games - worth trying!
I LOVE ELDER SCROLLS!!!!!
this was a very cool review and I have very strong positive feelings about the content and games discussed
Daggerfall was a cool dressup doll game!
kickabout league was the GOAT
I would love to see more rpg with mechanics from skyrim in sandbox open world also, also npc follower is a nice touch for lonely singleplayer. Game like Kenshi in fpp with good action combat mechanics would be the best thing in the world for me
Elder Scrolls is an inherently suboptimal genre. As he mentions, there are plenty of third person fantasy games, but for open world first person RPGs we get almost exclusively shooters of one type or another. I think the reason for this is that first person best compliments shooters, and third person best compliments melee. If you want to have a melee-heavy game, first person is usually a poorer choice. Not that this is always impossible, Bethesda kinda pulls it off and plenty of games (see Helldivers) pull off 3rd person shooting. It's just a lot less compelling, and creates a substantial bottleneck in Scrolls clones. (Plus how time intensive it is to make a huge open world on Indie or AA budget)
Dread Delusion
lunacid perhaps?
-Tires to make a video on Scrollslikes -Accidently makes a video about Immersive Sims.
just because you werent born at the time of release it does not make it overlooked.
There is no actual "rise" to be witnesses here, but I guess its better than nothing. I never understood why nobody copied the Elder Scrolls formula. Especially since its not a very special formula. Its just a list of "duh" RPG elements. Yet for some reason it is difficult enough to find a high profile game that offers a "be who you want" approach alone.
Mods....hello? Just play Enderal,.
the wild part is that Oblivion's soundtrack is MIIIIIIIIIILES better than Skyrim's
idk about the first person view thing. As someone who gets major motion sickness from 1st person, I love the option to play in 3rd. I don't even associate ES with 1st person view, because I never play it in 1st person.
these just don't fit the ✨️vibe✨️ of tes The environmental storytelling, npcs, and just chillin are the core of the games for me. The world just being open isn't enough. Gotta be able to just find a squished miner in a cave and morn them or walk off the road to a cove where nothing is but a pretty sight.
best intro to Noita I've seen so far. Great job! Subscribed. SM58 represent!
The Bloodline's dev is awesome, he's really ambitious and manages to deliver on those ambitions consistently
Dark souls has a stability meter, but it is invisible.
I put my bet on ES VI coming out and being trash like starfield. There are no people left at the company that actually made any of the good games in their catalogue.
Small games could still have a scrolls-like feel, even without a full open world and stuff. But those games could bring in new ideas for skill and combat systems. So therefore, I think our definition for scrolls-like should be more general until we see more game release and explore this space
What's kinda zany is this style of RPG was actually pretty old and used to be much more plentiful but mid 2000s basically made them extinct. Might & Magic 6-9, Wizardry 7-8, Arx Fatalis, Wizard & Warriors (2000), and so on. I think Morrowind came around and just made everyone go "Well crap, I can't compete with that!".
After seeing what kind of slop was developed at bethesda, it took away all my joy. And they dont even do it out of love to the project, its been 13 years and they barely started developing. So its probably a good thing if it completly dies, before a legacy also dies with it, just like fallout, mass effect, dragon age.
I can't wait for the day that low polly games become a thing of the past. For some reason they literally physically nauseate me and I think they are ugly as sin.
Wishlisted. 👍
You're definitely stretching with the term scrolls-like. It's catchy but it needs to have more precise elements besides being a first person, fantasy set, rpg. Unfortunately, the elder scrolls is too generic to really have a genre defining name made after it. More notable features of the game is its saving system which I personally think harms the core experience as it's essentially a form of cheating. If it's explained by in game lore, like morrowind, it'd be more appropriate. Even then, manual saves aren't unique. Souls-likes are much more concrete. There are activatable check points, bosses dispersed, combat has emphasis on skill and being able to parry or dodge enemy attacks (you don;t need to grind to play the game), sometimes the narrative is obfuscated and allows players to mostly ignore it as it's a vehicle to drive gameplay, there's no hardset difficulty slider, fights have to present as a challenge and for catharsis after overcoming them, the games are set in worlds where everything is at precipice of the next era.
wait... isn't starfield elder scrolls?
She R on my P until i G
whats the game at 3:30 PLEASE HELP ME
I can't believe you just read my comment and made a video about enderal...
Great list, these look great
My favorite scroll like games are fallout series
6:00
I swear it feels like everybody that talks about a "Scrolls-like" doesn't know what's good in the Elder Scrolls series. None of the games you showed are anywhere even close to fkin playable after you play TES. I'd rather go play another modded version of Skyrim at this point
Kinda surprised I haven't seen Barony mentioned in the comments. It's not really open world and also a roguelike so I suppose that's why lol
who says skyrim isnt an rpg? you are literally role playing the entire time
I feel like dismissing KCD because you play as Henry yet including Cyberpunk where you play as V is a pretty nonsensical distinction. A few sliders at the start of a game don't really change the idea of 'playing as whoever you want'.
I describe Outward not as a walking simulator, but as an adventurer simulator, with all the good and bad things that come with simulators.
Pretty cool game, tried it on Boosteroid the other day, very enjoyable and no issues what so ever.
