The Kingdom of Glenbrook Was Never The Hero
What? Despite being a green colored kingdom with a blonde-haired prince who is a main character, Glenbrook from Triangle Strategy kind of sucks, doesn't it? Lets talk about that.

    I'm into Nemesis vs. Gael and Rafal vs. Dickson, but I'm especially fond of the Four Hounds vs. the Four Fiends. It's kind of a shame DB prefers sticking to more manageable one-on-one duels because team fights are a wellspring of untapped potential, as we've seen very recently.

  • @CarelessFoolFallsFlat

    A video of high highs (Gangrel vs. Loghain is awesome, I love matchups where the fighters look really different on the outside but have many more similarities than you'd think) and low lows (I saw Validar vs. Astor somewhere else and now it's the first thing I think of when someone mentions boring matchups)

  • @CarelessFoolFallsFlat

    Very good pulls here. I like all of the Tellius matchups to varying degrees and Fortmortiis vs. Diablo sounds absolutely wicked.

    I also find Arvis vs. Ozai to be a frustrating matchup because Ozai isn't even Arvis's most interesting opponent from his family tree. Sozin also betrayed and killed a great hero for the sake of his empire only to die a broken, dissatisfied man at the end of his life. Unfortunately, Sozin isn't that much better when it comes to feats; I managed to scrounge up a one-sided "fight" with Roku, a creative use of firebending during a volcano eruption, and one or two training scenes during his youth. I do have one cool idea for the fight where Arvis declares that he's sacrificed too much to back down now, only for Sozin to bitterly remark that he knows nothing of true sacrifice, referencing how he left his own best friend to die just so his conquest would go more smoothly.

    I always figured the people of Glenbrook was the sad outcome of open corruption. They got used to not being able to do anything, forced to accept whatever their superiors said were right or else... And were so used to the corruption that anyone else who waltzed right in was just expected in their society. The fact their new king was an idealist threw them for a loop and didn't trust him as they didn't see what his open corruption was... And like the king himself he was easy to back down and chose whatever was the 'easiest option' unless you had someone special come along and help them make the right choice rather than the easy choice. They suck, but there is a reason for it... Even if we hate it.

      It makes me wonder why the Wolforts never became an independent country. I mean Benedict, the Wolfort residents, and many others even stated that Symone had the chance to take throne but chose not to and became a loyal vassal to Glenbrook. The Wolforts had the strength of their army, their people are loyal to their lord, and they managed to maintain stability despite being at war. Glenbrook was honestly lucky that the Wolforts remained loyal despite shouldering most of the conflict and having the advantage over them.

    Hyzante ending is terrible short term, but could be weird long term. Once Idore dies of old age who replaces him, Roland being in charge of the Salt would break him having to oversee the death of many people in slavery, and Serenoa is in charge of Gelbrook's land gives him the best personal position in any ending. Even in Bendicts ending you deal with the divide between right and poor, Hyzante ending, all rebellious problems are sent to Hyzante's captial so if something happens its over there.

    Man, between the previous video and this one I've never realized until now how low fantasy TS is. Remove the great hawks and magic and it is just historical fiction. Also, very unpopular opinion but I always feel bad seeing Roland slander. He might be stupid, but it is not his fault that the writers made Hyzante irredeemable instead of just flawed like Aesfrost and Glenbrok.

      Yeah this is my biggest issue with how religion is portrayed in Japanese media. I know that majority of the population is atheist and paranoid of religion but I expected more nuance. I recently played Metaphor and the main culprit behind most of that game's problems is the Sanctist church and all of it just made me cringe. It has become such a trope that i freaking roll my eyes every time they make religious organization to be blatantly evil and irredeemable. Like even when they say these religions have their goods, they never show them and only show their worst aspects.

    • @alphaspm6106
      @alphaspm6106 День тому

      @@toledochristianmatthew9919 I agree with that feeling but Hyzante is not evil because it is religious, everything that the Saintly Seven does is not because the Goddess of Salt commands to, (because it is fake) it is because that is what they want to do. And honestly, keeping a false faith alive for the sake of their ideology of equality fits with the Utility theme of Hyzante.

    • @belias360
      @belias360 13 годин тому

      Slander does not apply to Roland. He is a slavery apologist who was willing to uphold a lie in order to "help" most people. He is spineless and even up to the very end, he is quick to defer responsibility to anyone else other than himself. These are all facts supported by the text and his own words. He's the worst of the main protagonists, even compared to borderline war criminal Benedict.

    • @belias360
      @belias360 13 годин тому

      @toledochristianmatthew9919 Japanese people largely follow a mix of Buddhist and Shinto customs and philosophy. They may seem non religious on paper, and would even describe themselves as such to an extent if asked, but that's not completely true. Plus, RPGs exist that don't go with the trope you're concerned about. The Septian Church in the Trails series has been consistently portrayed as a benevolent force. While they have had some individual bad actors, that doesn't apply to the vast majority of its members. The church in the Dragon Quest series is also generally benevolent.

    • @toledochristianmatthew9919
      @toledochristianmatthew9919 10 годин тому

      @@belias360 I would also like to add Castlevania as well where they portray the Church as neutral and actually good. But there are still a lot of games where they portray the religious organizations as the ultimate bad guys and the ultimate trope is to kill God at the end of the game. I saw vid that explains why the Japanese uses this trope a lot and I can understand but I just wish more nuance because a lot of time it feels forced and overused in a lot of games.

    Another thing that TriStrat does that I love, is playing with the SRPG/TRPG traditions of colour-coding: typically blue is our heroes (with white as a secondary complement) red is the villains with black highlights, green is the NPCs and yellow when it appears is Other… In TriStrat, Glenbrook is green, the nominal power but ends up in the middle of three power bases; Aesfrost is red and black, initially framed as the obvious villains but have a depth to them; Hyzante has blue and white, and they look benevolent but are the most broken and corrupt system; and Wolffort, technically a separate entity before the Saltiron War, is yellow/gold. While there’s growing pains that I think Team Asano and ArtDink could work on if this gets an Octopath Traveller type of continuation, there’s a lot of interesting thought in the whole thing…

    Neat video! Small nitpick, Gorde Telliore was the original vassal Regna gave a high house to. Silvio was his son and inherited it when he died. This may explain why he’s an opportunist. No loyalty! I like how Glenbrook isn’t just the standard “Good Guy”. While the other nations’ flaws are more obvious, Glenbrook also had to do soul searching. As for Roland, he’s one of my favorite characters mainly because of his character arc. His carefree kind attitude in the beginning, to anger at Gustadolph, to the hopelessness of being King. To becoming strong enough not to run away. He had to be stupid for 10 minutes but he made it in the end and I’m happy for him.

  • @0axis771
    @0axis771 2 дні тому

    I feel you are being a bit too harsh on Glenbrook. Keep in mind that Glennbrook was the battlefield in two invasions and the changing of power very quickly back to back. Let's try to break it down. - They were invaded by Aesfrost. - The first prince died. - Their king was "exposed" as corrupt and executed. - Then they had to get used to the new status quo, which they had to adjust to. - Then Hyzante invades and causes massive damage, the severity changes depending on which path you choose. - And immediately after, Royalists go all out in their corrupt dealings and kill people who oppose them. The people of Glenbrook are tired, angry, and just want some stability back for longer than a month before something else happens. The lesson can be attempted to be learned after, but they need breathing space. And this is also why I feel for Roland, despite how he made the absolute dumbest decisions at the end of the story until Serenoa knocked sense into him in the Golden Route. Roland was not ready to bear the responsibilities and never learned how to deal with politics. He was thrust into the weight of being the "last" prince and thus the heir to the Kingdom that he had never wanted. Frankly, I found this realistic. Too many times, stories romanticize characters like Roland where they don't want the throne and end up being the absolute perfect fit. Roland was not. I even felt that Cordelia had more potential because she was suffering so much, but she straight up turned Avlora, the woman who murdered her older brother and caused much devastation in her Kingdom, to her side. The fact that we got to see Roland struggle, break, and have a bit of a fall from grace really highlights the weight of how difficult being a ruler is. Overall, I think you did well explaining just how tricky things in Glenbrook had gotten. And you are correct especially how people tend to think that Kingdoms are the "good guys", and by the same stroke, people also think that "Empires" are evil incarnate.

    "Liberty and freedom are not the same thing" (+related paragraph) Small correction: what you have just described here is the libertarian debate around positive freedom vs negative freedom. Positive freedom (the benefits as they exist as an abstract concept) pertains to those who want to gratify themselves, regardless of the events that got them there - whereas negative freedom is the understanding that series of events will lead to a desired outcome (the concept of, as you put it, responsibility). A good example is if you wanted to eat an apple. Those arguing for positive freedom will just say 'OK, I'm going to go and eat an apple', and care little for where it came from, so long as it exists (the consumer, basically). Those, meanwhile, arguing for *negative* freedom, understand that you need to cultivate the plant that leads to a ripe apple (think farmers and such, and those who observe consequences on the road to a desired outcome). "Give a man a fish, it feeds him for a day. Teach that man to fish, and you feed him for life" - that sort of thing.

    This is hands down the best video I have seen on Xenoblade, or really, ANY video game. The amount of research that went into this is exceptional. And the way the information is presented is excellent. To have the lore woven in as it happens chronologically (and not how it is revealed to the player) is perfect!! EDIT: to add, This video was such an amazing companion piece to the near 250 hours I poured into XC3. This video is the end all, be all monograph on this subject. Thank you for this.

    I absolutely loved your XC3 review. But I am so hesitant to put 2 hours into this. This game is so jarringly anime. I need my hand held with the assurance that the creator of this vid... recognizes how weird this game is.

    Are the character designs across the Xeno series always this ... bad looking? Its so jarring how over celled they look.

    I feel that you missed a great opportunity to address the Book of Seiros Volume II's claim that the Crest system is so bad that it's the reason Sothis distanced herself from the world. The church's official doctrine is that the Crest system is horrible, literally the reason god doesn't talk to Fodlan anymore, yet Rhea tries to balance having a kind of moral authority through the church with letting humans still govern themselves. The Church of Seiros is an intriguing organization in how it (mainly) left Enbarr after the War of Heroes and situated itself in Garreg Mach. If Rhea wanted to, she could have kept the church operating from the capital of Fodlan and had it be closely tied to the government throughout history. The opportunity to be an extremely hands-on, even iron-fisted ruler was there, yet Rhea instead established a degree of separation and placed her HQ in a spot where anyone at the distant reaches of Fodlan would only have to travel roughly the same distance for aid. The Church of Seiros also seemingly intervened for the sake of Adrestia after the War of the Eagle and the Lion, convincing Loog to found his own nation rather than sweeping south to take over all of Fodlan. The only condition seemed to be that this new nation, governed by the Ten Elites' descendants, would acknowledge and adhere to the moral teachings of the faith, presumably to prevent a second Nemesis and the resulting massacres. IIRC, we don't know what stance the church took on the Leicester Alliance's founding and Faerghus' conquest of it before Leicester finally became free. Rhea appears to be someone who doesn't want to wield governmental power, whether because she respects any autonomy Sothis might have desired for humanity or because she thinks only Sothis is qualified to govern all people, particularly in regard to matters like confronting an apocalypse. In contrast to this rather hands-off approach, the other bearer of the Crest of Seiros, Edelgard, advocates for ruling with an iron fist, making sure that nothing can possibly happen to her land or her without her first knowing all about it and either causing or approving of it. Rhea and Edelgard are very similar in their personalities and traumas but have drastically different solutions, and Silver Snow, the first route written, was probably created on the basis of assessing and defeating these two extremes to create a better, balanced answer. I also find it interesting how Sothis' revival might be an unspoken necessity for the Nabatean population to recover. With the Nabateans reduced to five people, they're especially vulnerable to genocide, and the true origin of the Crests and Relics can incentivize such atrocities, hence one of the major reasons why the Church of Seiros concealed that detail. Slowly rebuilding the population could increase the odds of a Nabatean being discovered as a non-human, thus opening them up to prejudices. Rhea's homunculi are so flawed that they keep on dying, so this suggests Rhea can't just restore the population in a lab. Short of inbreeding, any spouse for a Nabatean would have to be a human, and said spouses and resulting families would also have to prove trustworthy enough to conceal the Nabateans' genetic identities for generations until the population could establish its own resilient society. Even then, the spouses having to be human could potentially cause the Nabatean race (perhaps more like a species) to still dwindle away regardless. For the Nabateans to ever properly recover, let alone not have to hide their racial identities, reviving Sothis might be seen as the one viable option, since she could create a Nabatean population from scratch again. The fact that Sothis does exist as a character in Three Houses and the Crest of Flames works might also indicate that she is still alive, so restoring her is more like healing her and finishing the process that began at Zanado before Nemesis' attack, along with giving justice and gratitude to the person who kept the world inhabitable. The Church of Seiros' suppression of technology is a major detail, but something highly relevant is that in Three Houses' setting, humanity apparently did destroy the world with their technology in the past. Sothis spent ages painstakingly healing the planet so as to prevent extinctions, a process that devastated her, and then the Agarthans and Nemesis seemingly tried to restart the apocalyptic behaviors and mentalities in record time. To Rhea, humanity proved that it can't be trusted with unfettered technological growth since that led to violent and, based on Agartha's prejudices, oppressive mind sets. The books in the DLC library note that autopsies in general were banned, mentioning white magic as an alternative overall, so Manuela's comments (and the model in her office) imply that the ban was lifted at some point. The same goes for telescopes, since devices in Garreg Mach and letters from the students indicate that astronomy is studied there and the vast distances of space are known. In particular, Edelgard notes how long it would take for Sothis to travel from the Blue Sea Star to Fodlan. Books are also sold in the markets around the monastery, and despite Byleth's secretive, isolating upbringing as a mercenary, he or she can read them, so the improved printing press was likely unbanned too. As further evidence of this, Raphael's family wasn't too well-off yet he sends some of his books to his sister, implying that she can also read them. Leonie is literate as well despite being a subsistence hunter (IIRC) in need of her entire village's support and major loans to attend Garreg Mach. The only thing that might still be banned is crude oil, and considering how real-life humanity still hasn't saved itself from destroying the environment with that, the writers might not have wanted to treat the topic as solved when it's certainly not in our world. No one is dethroning Agartha as the war crimes grand champion in Three Houses and Hopes' setting, or Edelgard as the individual with the most war crimes that can be attributed to her in the games' events. Their Nightcore Nuremberg and Hegemon Hague trials have way too much documented evidence on other channels. Rhea and the others have tried, but they're not nearly competitive enough in that regard. Thanks for this video and the others you've made on Three Houses' factions! As a setting inspired by Three Kingdoms China and the wars of medieval Europe, Fodlan is especially designed to have no clear good answer, and its nations are likely to crumble. Even the Agarthans and Nabateans' wars still persist, so the conflicts within Fodlan and even those of outside lands are liable to rage on for ages to come. A series of videos that addresses these elements for every group in the setting is greatly appreciated and, IMO, best explores the themes of the stories.

    Regarding the crest system, a lot of the characters have noble ideas and intentions in wanting to change it but honestly I think they’re dreaming about a reality that will never come to pass and placing too much blame on the church since they’re an easy scapegoat. Crests DO make you objectively superhuman and superior to normal humans. In any society really that would become valued and eugenics (whether above or below board) would begin. Even looking at our world today with various democracies and republics among other governmental systems, the wealthy do pretty much whatever they want and get away with it. Imagine if we had something like crests, it’d be almost no different from Fódlan. Additionally, I don’t entirely understand why people get so hung up about the fact that the church’s history and god are ‘fake’. First off Sothis is a very real god, and while the church may overplay her omniscience, it’s very true that she basically created the modern world and all the life on it after the war with ancient agartha. Yes she can die (debatably since her body yes but not her soul), yes she’s not onnipowerful, but what even is a god? A god is honestly just a being or idea, real or not, that people give importance to and decide to worship. Gods can die, they can bleed, they can have flaws. Christianity has kind of tainted the idea of what it means to be a ‘god’ but Sothis certainly fits the bill. I mean come on, there are millions of gods that humans have created and worshipped and unless you’re a believer, then those millions of gods are fake. There isn’t really any ground to stand on and call someone’s entire belief system wrong, when it’s all relative. A very similar argument can be made about history. It’s written by the victors. Look at a textbook today and tell me how much of it you think is the unilateral truth. The answer is almost none of it. There are multiple sides to every story and entire realities can be rewritten and fabricated. Now, to play devil’s advocate we can look at something like Japanese people not really learning about their involvement in WW2. To pretty much everyone else it’s an objectively wrong and bad thing, but to the Japanese they’re doing just fine being none the wiser. Now think about the fact that no one in Fódlan really knows what happened back then. The only sources are really the remaining Nabateans and agarthans, and their knowledge is both heavily skewed and still doesn’t go back far enough to really understand the root cause of these feuds. So there’s really no right answer and at the end of the day why would anyone care about stuff that happened thousands of years ago. Yes it’s cool to learn about and it can be good study material for the human condition, government, technological advancement and all that stuff but in reality, the people of Fódlan knowing the truth isn’t that big a deal imo. My main point is that while these things are ideal in a perfect utopia, the world is not that and will never be. Yet, it will keep spinning and people will keep living. Players like to act like knowing the history and truth of Sothis is the end all be all when it’s not and never will be.

    I don't know I didn't really vibe with triangle strategy that much but maybe because when I bought the game I had just beaten tactics ogre. But I don't mind your unhinged rants. You should probably give these little speeches title that way it doesn't get lost with all the newcomers in the stream of videos which is UA-cam
