I love how in Three Hopes, nearly all Blue Lions stay at Dimitri's side. Despite Faerghus having PLENTY of major issues, they love their country too much to see the Empire and Alliance destroy it. Only Mercedes and Ashe can defect, for very understandable reasons.

“The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus Sucks” my brother in Seiros that’s one of the best parts! Faerghus is my beloved shit hole which is supposed to be France but really just is tsarist Russia.
In all seriousness though Faerghus’ lore goes so fucking deep and half of it is dark souls lore levels of obscure which requires mountains of theorizing and analysis of vague comments that paint a bigger picture.
For one, Fhirdiad was likely not always the Capital of the kingdom of faerghus. Camulus (located at the northern edge of the Tailteann plains, a major center of the central church, and where the central church hides out in three hopes/crimson flower) was likely the original capital of the kingdom. We know this through various documents from hopes and houses. For instance, the entire peninsula that Sreng is on used to be part of Sreng, which would include Fhirdiad. And Camulus also just out right works as a capital due to the clout it has.
As a church holy site in the northern part of the Tailteann plains, it’s likely it was built on top of the place where nemesis died, so Loog, being crowned by the church, likely ruled from there until his descendants would push Sreng back, in either one or two wars. If I had to guess, Klaus founded Fhirdiad, while Banfig, Klaus’ eldest son, finished the job (while properly establishing house Gautier in the process and getting the juicy fertile land for Fraldarius that is mentioned in the three hopes documents, although that Fraldarius farmland was likely taken most by klaus)
There is also SOOOO many implications about the crescent moon war and the three archduchies that are also only implied but could easily be concluded. For one, we know the western kingdom, aka Mach, is the only not wasteland part of the kingdom that isn’t Fraldarius territory, and it’s filled with assholes and nobles who will immediately get uppity to any threat to their autonomy.
During the succession crisis after klaus’ death, the lords of Mach backed the middle child, Krouffer, who, between his brothers *lacked a crest*. The western church aligned, crest obsessed western kingdom backing a crestless prince seems odd, as in their eyes, he seems like the least legitimate candidate. But that’s exactly the point. By having all of his power depend on them, they gain a massive amount of power and autonomy. Furthermore, Krouffer is described as Banal and generous, so he seems like the sort to be easily cajoled into giving out favors and privileges to the western kingdom. He’s sorta similar to Rufus, a crestless prince who is used by the western kingdom for their own power, albeit WAY more sympathetic. Princes need not be assholes for faerghus to make killers of them.
The whole move was likely spear headed by House Dominic, which based off some dialogue from Rodrigue in three hopes was WAY bigger and power powerful back then, including most of Duval and Elidure lands. Krouffer probably didn’t even initially go along with it, with him joining up with the western lords only after it became clear that they were going to do this regardless of whether or not Krouffer actually wanted the throne.
Another reason Krouffer probably started going along with it was so he could force his brothers to the negotiating table so they would stop fighting each other, with the end result being three archduchies, all nominal vassals of King/Archduke Banfig in the Kingdom’s heartland. Although after that Krouffer probably got made into a puppet of the nobles, maybe even murdered in a Dominic coup, which would explain why Banfig, who is described as not caring for power, would have reconquered Mach, to save his brother. Hopes mentions a Blaiddyd cadet branch named house Ifan which is in Mach, so they could be Krouffer’s descendants, ruling from the old direct domain of the Archduke of Mach. Also, the reason why we hear so little of the war may be because it went by relatively fast. Out of all the Mach/western kingdom lords, House Dominic got singled out, and was reduced to a tiny barony, while their neighbors were rewarded. In all likelihood, House Dominic grew tired of using Krouffer as a puppet and tried to seize direct control of the Archduchy, only to turn all their fellow lords against them, who were not in it for House Dominic’s power, but their own power, so they likely sold the Dominics out to Faerghus, getting rewards and keeping their old privileges they got from Krouffer’s reign.
Meanwhile, the Leicester Archduchy under Kite was likely a slitherer and House Riegan power play. Morrianne, Klaus’ sister, backed Kite and may have forged Klaus will, so she was possibly a slitherer agent. Furthermore, if Kite were to rule Leicester, he’d need a direct territory of his own, but unlike Krouffer, he can’t split off some of house Blaiddyd’s land, so house Riegan (a Blaiddyd cadet branch according to gatekeeper in houses, likely with the elite riegan being a relative of the elite Blaiddyd, a bastard son of Blaiddyd born before they got their crests if I had to guess), might have generously lent Deirdriu to Kite as his capital.
Furthermore Kite’s death is extremely odd, as he “died of illness” despite having a crest which grants great vigor and strength. Also, kite’s eldest brother Banfig managing to out live kite by at least a decade, is very odd. In all likelihood, house Riegan murdered kite and stopped the succession, then leading the rebellion.
Poor Banfig… had to fight a war to avenge his brother, only to get hit with a two front war when Sreng invaded half way through the war.

Wow, I need to finish Azure Gleam to find all this shit. Really good stuff.
Also, hate to break it to you, but Faerghus is almost exactly like early-high medieval France, down to the toxic obsession with chivalry, the warlike nature of the Church and state, and the backstabbing and constant territorial changes. Sure, there are a couple of Celtic influences thrown in there, but the Irish and Welsh lords weren't exactly peaceful either.
Also, we already have some idea of how House Riegan became a cadet branch of House Blaiddyd through the figure of the Luna Knight, a folk hero who was a daughter of House Blaiddyd who married Duke Riegan. She could be fake, but enough lines up that she could have been real.

    • @scion513
      @scion513 3 місяці тому +18

@@MrGksarathyI hear that argument a lot regarding the house Riegan cadet branch issue, but quite frankly it makes no sense to me.
You don’t become a cadet branch of another house by marrying a daughter of the aforementioned different house. Fodlan is notably patriarchal (albeit far less than real life feudal Europe, and less consistent), so a woman marrying into a house is very much unlikely to change a house’s status from being a regular house into a cadet branch of another house. If that WERE the case, then house Daphnel is a Riegan Cadet branch because they married a member of house Riegan.
Cadet branches are typically founded by second, third, fourth, etc sons, OR by bastard sons who become nobles.
What is more likely is that House Riegan was already a cadet branch of house blaiddyd since it’s inception. In fact, I could imagine House Riegan enjoying a position of prominence during Blaiddyd rule over Leicester, as they are a related family, and were noted to have been MADE dukes by house Blaiddyd during kingdom rule (in the Alliance nobles document). It is also possible that House Riegan were household knights of house blaiddyd, as they were relatives, before being granted lands in Leicester as reward for heroic acts during the kingdom annexation of Leicester. Similar to how King Banfig granted one of his household knights Laetitia Zoe Gautier, lands conquered from Sreng as a reward for her heroism during the Sreng invasion that occurred during the crescent moon war. Oh and also, according to legend, a King Blaiddyd was the father of a king lier (who most know from the Shakespeare play) who is the father of Regan, the etymological root for house Riegan. Also, King Lier is said to have founded the irl city of Leicestershire/ is the name origin for land irl Leicester region.
As for the Tsarist Russia connection. It mostly is related to climate, and the relations and behaviors between the nobles and king.
In Tsarist Russia, there was this social idea that the Tsar could never deliberately do any wrong. Any problems that could be levied on the tsar are always redirected towards the nobility, disloyal boyars who would mislead the king with lies or bad advice all for their own selfish ends. It was also sort of a “meme” (as in the original definition of a meme and also sorta the modern definition of a meme) that the tsar could do no wrong among the Russian peasantry. And faerghus seems to be someone taking this idea, but making it literal, and then saying “the current system by its very nature is flawed, even if the kings are good”. Another thing, Rufus never actually declares himself king in azure gleam, he is specifically remaining regent. He declares that he is “freeing Prince Dimitri from the foul clutches of Duke Fraldarius”, not that Dimitri must be overthrown. Every problem in faerghus is at surface level levied at the nobility, but this seems to be more of a deconstruction of this idea. Sure you can remove the power hungry nobles and put in good hearted ones, but they also need to be willing to break with the current system, as it is the root cause of the problem (combined with the climate.)
Also, while Dimitri is a very Russian name, his middle name is also of interest. Alexandre, while being a reference to Alexandre Dumas, a French painter, is also a reference to Tsar Alexander, the Russian Tsar who fought Napoleon. Edelgard is very clearly an expy of Napoleon in regards to her political and social effects on fodlan.
Another thing to note. I make this mention of faerghus’ capital being moved. It could be that this is similar to Tsar Peter the Great’s moving of the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. Just as Tsar Peter takes land from the Swedish to found his new capital, Faerghus takes land from Sreng (who have Norse names, aka sorta Swedish) and found Fhirdiad there.
Oh and lastly, Rhea burning down Fhirdiad is painfully similar to Tsar Alexander burning down Moscow before Napoleon can capture it.

    • @MrGksarathy
      @MrGksarathy 3 місяці тому +1

About the cadet branch thing, I concede your point. There is the possibility however that House Riegan went extinct in the male line at some point, and a son of House Blaiddyd married into the family, thus making it a cadet branch or in a situation akin to House Habsburg-Lorraine.
I also understand your comparisons to Tsarist Russia, especially during the Romanov years, but a lot of that stuff still applies to medieval France, including the idea that the King is ultimately innocent of any wrongdoing while the nobles take all the blame. Heck, even the climate of Faerghus can be mapped onto Northern France pretty well.

Can you point me to the documents on the Camulus part? That sounds interesting and I'm really curious to look deeper into it.
Though whats also an interesting aspect of how much Faerghus sucks and is an absolute failure, there is also the document "Burnt Remnants of a Report" in the shadow library of the abyss which strongly hints at Pan, Loogs tactician, being a member of Those who Slither in the Dark and Loog himself being allied with them and only winning the war due to their soldiers and weaponry, which basically puts the whole legitimacy of Faerghus into question, as this means that it might not have originated in a popular rebellion, but a traitor lord and his crownies allying himself with a dark cult to betray his liege and carve out his own personal kingdom. It also plays into the whole theme of chivalry being a sham and a massive lie, Loog is basically hailed as the great chivalric lion king, but with the document in place, we have to really question this claim.

fun fact for all my fellow faergheads, in the scarlet blaze route of Fire Emblem Three Hopes, there is a translation error regarding the Family of House Mateus (the head of which was a major conspirator in the tragedy of Duscur, possibly one of if not the chief noble conspirator)
In Azure gleam, we meet a son of Viscount Mateus (a paladin) who is married to a Gautier girl (a priest I think?) (relation to Sylvain is unknown but presumably a cousin)
However, in Scarlet Blaze, after Viecount Mateus gets deposed, the new Baron Mateus is someone different from the earlier mentioned son. But Hubert and Rodrigue can’t agree on what his relation is to the Viscount, one calls him a son, the other calls him a nephew.
Which implies that Viscount Mateus married his own sister if you ignore it as being an error
(The Japanese translation clarified that Baron Mateus is the viscount’s cowardly nephew)

Manuela not only does an Autopsy, but also has an accurate diorama of a human body. Oil set on fire is in fact the Blaze gambit, which even a Seiros aligned battalion can use, and full blown astronomy is a viable career path. In Golden Wildfire during the attack on Fraldarius Territory, Claude makes use of barrels of alcohol to blow open the gates.
This could be an almyra thing tho, as a few almyrans come along with the invasion, along with a bunch of requisitioned almyran ships.
We do see cannons on almyran ships in the Deirdru map for three houses (almyran ships and fodlan ships look noticeably different on that map). However, it COULD be that almyra simply uses alcohol canisters instead of gunpowder for their cannons, hence why they haven’t been able to downsize their cannons into early guns.
Speaking of the Fraldarius invasion i feel like not enough people talk about how Claude has to inform Nader’s troops that NO, they don’t get to pillage and plunder the innocents of faerghus, to the Nader and the Almyrans’ collective disappointment, because almyrans see pillaging and warfare as a good time. Like, I know almyra’s whole plot line is the breaking of xenophobic beliefs between Fodlan and almyra; but IS could have at least not made the Almyrans a culture that sees killing people and plundering their homes and families as a good time.

I love how Faerghus is such a thorough deconstruction of the good guy nation in most FE games because while it has that knightly aesthetic and aristocratic characters that seem closely bound, that aesthetic belies a darker reality in which the knightly culture ultimately perpetuates a toxic martyr culture among the populace, which is also tied to its fairly conservative, segregated gender roles and its particularly martial crestocracy. Additionally, the aristocrats we see have pretty strained relationships due to the Tragedy of Duscur, and most of the nobility acts like you would a feudal aristocracy to act. Same goes for the Church.
The result is a Kingdom with a hardy, resilient populace that us nonetheless riven with deep divisions, infected with a toxic reactionary ideology that gets people killed, and is too violently hidebound for its own good.
Still, even with all this, Edelgard's invasion is ultimately unjustified because no one really asked her to interfere, and these problems cannot really be fixed by conquest, especially if your goal is to actually help people.

Faerghus lore is a f*ckin’ mess. You’ve got Sreng invading practically every Tuesday, Duscur on thin ice until Azure Gleam Chapter 8 with racial tension, The Empire and even Leicester at your throat, and even your own people because the Western Lords feel like it and/or if you don’t help the church, the commonfolk could start a civil rebellion if they so wanted.
Then that’s not to mention their beliefs of chivalry and all that and how crests are everything to a fault that you’re either tossed aside, or passed around dehumanisingly. And how that chivalry makes some of the most intelligent of characters into Fódlan’s biggest dumbasses for following an insane maniac for 4 months straight, that you’d might as well be following Fates’ Garon. Wotj implicit trust.
Oh yeah, depending on where you are, it’s most likely really really cold in comparison to the other nations.
But that still doesn’t stop me from loving the Blue Lions crew and Azure Moon and that Dimitri is best lord and “Edelgard was right” supporters should know where to stick it

Wow, I already enjoyed your last video about Adrestia, and you delivered another well-made video. I appreciate that you're able to even criticize your favorite route and house. No wonder I was able to enjoy your Adrestia video despite how I'm an Edelgard fan. You try and make sure that you have valid criticism for ALL sides without playing favorites.
You know, one of the things I appreciated from the Azure Gleam was how Dimitri explained why he didn't immediately go take the throne of Faerghus, as well as explain why he would be motivated to oppose Edelgard and support the Church. There's plenty of political nuance behind it and there are decisions that are not easy for him to make. It helped ease my annoyance with him from Azure Moon. Bonus on how it even explains why Edelgard feels like she needs to conquer Faerghus.
I do agree that Faerghus is the one nation that will have the most difficult time doing away with the Crest system, even if Edelgard conquers it. When you think about the lack of resources, Relics having the power to take on an entire army by itself helps a lot because you don't need to worry TOO much about keeping your army well-fed, because the military would normally be in high demand, as per its culture of learning to fight before learning to write. But at the same time, this creates a vicious cycle that only feels like Faerghus is gonna collapse in itself at the rate it was going. Their endurance can only go on for so long.
This is why I'm a fan of characters like Ingrid in non-AM endings and Sylvain's general endings. Ingrid in non-AM endings becomes the new Count Galatea and dedicates herself to revitalizing the territory, which flourished from the frigid wasteland it once was, which is superior to her AM ending where she just becomes a knight and just ends up in more battles. And Sylvain's ending has him solve the dispute with Sreng by making peace with them.
Once you solve the problems with resources and no longer need to have battles, the Faerghus region will be far better for it.

Thank you, always a pleasure to make something people enjoy.
Funny thing. While I do think Azure Moon is *objectively* the best written route...my favorite route is Silver Snow. And my favorite lord is Claude (but only thanks to Three Hopes, before then I was pretty meh about him).
With perspectives like that, plus my experience with Three Houses that I explained in my last 3H video, you might be able to understand how my tastes can be less prone to favoritism.
Your analysis of Faerghus is very good, although if there is one thing that would and has prevented its collapse, it would be the Church. If the Church stands, so too does Faerghus. Even should Faerghus begin to collapse, as we saw with the Tragedy of Duscur, the Church will step in and establish order itself. For better or worse, of course.

    • @0axis771

@@TheHearthGuy Yeah, I understand why AM is considered the best route given how Part 1 tends to have quite a bit of Blue Lion involvement for a few chapters and Dimitri's descent is pretty good. I can't bring myself to enjoy it overall due to how the story kinda NEEDS you to like Dimitri. If you don't, the story's quality kinda goes downhill quickly. Especially cause by Part 2, every other story element is abandoned.
I think what helps a lot is that, from my perspective, you took a step back and tried to view the entirety of Fodlan, or each nation as per your videos, as a whole. You wanna see the larger scope of it and that lets you make a more unbiased argument. Which is something I very much respect.
Speaking of the Kingdom needing the Church, AG kinda revealed how Rhea knew agriculture techniques that she shared with Dimtiri ONLY when Dimitri offered support to Rhea. So it says a lot that Rhea essentially sat on this kind of information for so long and only now does she decide to offer it to Dimitri and Faerghus. If you think about it, Faerghus needing the Church might equally be due to Rhea withholding her knowledge and/or neglecting them for the sake of ensuring that her Church is still needed.

    • @scion513
      @scion513 3 місяці тому +4

Good analysis. Azure gleam part 1 is probably the best part in all of three hopes. (Let’s not talk about part 2)
Also, another thing that people don’t really notice is that while faerghus is constantly fighting Sreng and nobles are also a problem, the food issue is by far the single greatest issue faerghus has.
Faerghus’s nobles barely send any resources to each other, hell, Ingrid’s dad, Count Gunnar Galatea, out right REFUSES to accept any aid from the rest of the kingdom, instead preferring to sell his daughter off in a political marriage.
Also, in a different comment I left, I mentioned that Faerghus had conquered a lot of land from Sreng. Well some of that land, namely the lands in Fraldarius territory, are mentioned in three hopes as being the most fertile land in the entire eastern Kingdom. So faerghus did conquer some land from Sreng, although whether it was in a direct attack on Sreng or if Sreng attacked first for that war in particular is up in the air.
Another detail from three houses that not many people talk about is where most of the pre time skip battles occur. Every singly main story battle outside of garreg Mach pre time skip is in faerghus or near the faerghus border.
Also, the type of enemies you fight in repeatable battles you can do also seem VERY deliberate. In Hrym territory (currently being utterly mismanaged by Duke Ludwig von Aegir) you ALWAYS fight bandits. In other parts of the empire or alliance, you typically fight kingdom soldiers in a mock battle.
But in Faerghus based missions? It’s ALWAYS bandits.
Faerghus’ single greatest problem is it’s lack of food, it’s conflicts with Sreng stem from it, and when peasants starve, they turn to banditry in desperation. This constant banditry leads faerghus to further invest into crests and knights, because the barriers of feudalism make it difficult to properly solve the problem as some lords simply follow the system out of hunger for power, belief in the system, or simple “it is what it is”.
In the Ingrid Ashe B support in three hopes, the pair literally stare dumbfounded over a full harvest in the southern kingdom (likely Geraint land, the most fertile part of the kingdom), stating that neither of them had ever seen this large of a harvest in their entire lives. And while Count Geraint is loyal to Dimitri (uninvolved with Duscur and never betrays him) he isn’t really ideological. He doesn’t send the food elsewhere. Maybe the other lords refuse aid, maybe he wants the other lords to pay and they refuse to do so, or a dozen other things. Either way, no food is sent and people starve, turning to desperate means to survive.

    @BlueMageWithSoulEdge 3 місяці тому +1

I agree with about only less than half of what you said.
The idea of separating the kingdom between two sons is good idea and has been historically practiced in nearly every wealthy kingdom. It's not stupid; it is something that happens. Plus, there are many of times when a king didn't do that, and it directly led to in-fighting.
You do know that therapy isn't an end-all, right? It wasn't going to help him any faster. And I, for one, thinks his "mental disease" isn't him going crazy-- the crest allows its users to do supernatural things, perhaps his crest actually allows him to see and hear the dead.
I believe that all four routes are correct to a degree. A theme to this game is letting go of the past and one avenue, it displays is realizing and seeing the whole picture. Mostly everything about a subject isn't found in one place, nor within one route. Only pieces can be found and there are many lies placed around it. Just like how you have to search in all four routes to know the truth of their past, you also have to explore all the routes to get the truth of their present.
And looking at the rest of the series we know what happens to Fodlan.
Lastly, I do agree with you about the France thing. I thought Fargus was named after the country "Fragie" which did have a young ruler named Demetri, His father was killed in a coup from foreign invaders, did have an uprising against am empire, did have to kill his uncle, did have to fight Eastern invaders and did die at a young age. It is by a sea, under a very hostile people, and wasn't known for farming. I believe Fragus is close to Turkey (or may even be Turkey), because Fragus is landlocked with the Empire. We find out in Azure route that the Empire isn't modeled after Rome but after the Macedonian. And when looking at old maps of Macedonia there is a territory that is similar to Fodlan that has a country named Fargi, that is somewhere in or clsoe to present day Turkey. This and the whole "Golden Deer" name really help with nailing down the place this area is based off of.
    In short it isn't France.
And Demetri should have married Reha. That would have solved everything.

Also, Fodlan is painfully just a rip off of Europe. Western Adrestia is northern France (Neuvelle territory is Britany). The peninsula Enbarr is on is Italy, with Enbarr being on a river likely analogous to the Tiber river which Rome is on.
Also, the splitting of faerghus into three kingdoms is a reference to the division of The Carolingian Empire into east, west, and middle Francia, a decision which had disastrous consequences on Europe and caused several wars

    • @BlueMageWithSoulEdge
      @BlueMageWithSoulEdge 3 місяці тому

The entirety of the series is based on European wars. The geology doesn't support you, and then there is the title of the Empire. When Rome had Meccidonia it had more territory than that region. Plus the fact of them using the "Golden Deer", or the "Golden Horde" which it is also known as.
      It can't be France.

    • @scion513
      @scion513 3 місяці тому

Actually, I think faerghus is Russian and French and Celtic.
The war is loosely influenced by the Napoleonic wars. Edelgard being equivalent to Napoleon and Dimitri being equivalent to Tsar Alexander.
Also, almyra is blatantly Persian. Which is also a middle eastern empire known for its horse riding archers.
Also, I could go on about the geographic similarities between Fodlan and Europe.
Duscur is blatantly Denmark. Morfis is turkey, the island south of almyra is Crimea. The islands between Adrestia and Morfis are Attica, Achaea, Albania, and the long one is the Bulgarian/Romanian coast line.
The very western most parts of faerghus looks like the Netherlands and Belgium.
Leicester is very similar to the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth: an elective monarchy, where it’s leader is elected by a council of nobles that also holds legislative power, so the round table is very similar to the polish Lithuanian Sejm, even down to the constant bickering that prevents anything getting done.
Northern Leicester is similar to the polish/Prussian coast line. With Deirdru’s area being similar to Gdańsk/Kaliningrad. Also, Margravate Edmund reeks of early Prussia. As Prussia before it was a military power, tried to become a mercantile power in the same vein as the Netherlands. Even down to Margrave Edmund being a very new power in Leicester.
Also, Hrym territory is very similar to southern Romania aka wallachia. Even the Airmid river is similar to the Danube:
Brigid looks like if Iberia was shattered and sunk; turned into an archipelago.
Albinea is Britain. Alba/Albion/Albinea are old names for Britain, related words.
Fodlan is europe geographically, with its lands squished together and shifted.
Also, in an interview with the devs of the actual game, they say faerghus under nemesis was inspired by Gaul, that Adrestia is Italian with german names, Leicester is sorta english, and Faerghus is culturally French/Frankish

I can't remember which character from Genonlogy it is, but that gives a connection. Since Ulster is both a person and place, whomever has the blood has traces back to when the land was known as Fargus.
In short, just cause entomology displays ties to a significant place does not mean for sure it is inspiration of the place, especially since said inspiration can also be a connection to more significant themes. And if it is so a connection to Genonlogy, then we know for certain it is not in France since the whole of that conflict is around thracia. Which is no where close to France.

My one persistent headcanon about Faerghus' formation is that Pan eventually got too fond of his surface-dweller friends, had a change of heart, and secretly contacted the Church to institute it as the official religion of Loog's new country in an attempt to safeguard the Kingdom from future Agarthan interference. Afterwards, he refused all accolades out of shame.
I could be super wrong, but it feels like a fun explanation for how the Kingdom so quickly pivoted towards the Church despite relying heavily on the Agarthans for its independence.

I kinda loved Azure Gleam after playing it besides the incredibly depressing ending for Edelgard. It’s an interesting contrast to the other routes, where Edelgard and Claude are these super ideologically driven people with a lot of forward momentum and the kingdom is getting the absolute worst of it. Dimitri just has to put out a billion fires from invasions from four sides and trying to bring justice for a literal genocide and navigate obligations to a church he holds no love for at all and is just generally going through it with no greater ambition than making sure the people he’s responsible for’s needs and safety are met. Guy got dealt the worst hand imaginable but having Dedue and Rodrigue around and not spending years on the lam means he’s still keeping it together.
It fleshes out the oddly sane Crimson Flower Dimitri into a fully developed character, basically, and shows a highly intelligent side of him base 3H never could, though the arc doesn’t hit as hard as his Azure Moon counterpart, it juggles a lot of interesting pieces while also being the version of the war most different from the other routes in how it plays out.

I also feel that Dimitri is far more aware of the fundamentally violent nature of kingship and state power than Claude or Edelgard are. They talk a good game, but I feel both of them get lost in their own sauce a bit while Dimitri doesn't mince words about what he has to do to keep the peace. Because of this, he's probably the most interested of the 3 lords in practical, bottom-up political change, as shown wonderfully in his supports with Yuri. I mean, he wants to build a public education system and was asking Yuri for advice on how to better mobilize and empower the people on the ground level.
That, and he takes VW Claude's role of digging into the truth behind everything that's going on, and he gets to show his more intelligent side.

I don't know if this is the right place to share this thought, but here goes: The leadership of Fodlan is crap, mainly because every faction's leader is either evil, corrupt, selfish, insane, or in Rhea's case, all of the above.
The big outlier is Dimitri, who, while he does fall to madness, is the only unselfish leader. In fact, most of Dimitri's fall is due to his selflessness, which is corrupted into self-loathing.
Dimitri cares for others more than any other lord - Edelgard and Claude are two sides of the same selfish coin who had a traumatic childhood and decided the only solution is to conquer the continent. They were hurt, and they want revenge. Both of them suppress this fact by covering their ambitions in platitudes like 'making the world a better place'', but let's be real - that's what genocidal maniacs say. Those two have been hurt, and they want to hurt the world back. They're doing to Fodlan what Sylvain is doing to women. It's an understandable perspective, but it's purely selfish.
But speaking of genocidal maniacs, doesn't Dimitri go full-on psychopath? Well yes. And what does he do? Does he slaughter innocent villagers like Edelgard and Claude wouldn't hesitate to do if they thought it would help their own goals? No, he slaughters bandits. Imperial soldiers. Those he thinks are just as guilty as he is. And when he finally learns the consequences of his madness through Fleche? he's broken beyond belief. He realized that he was harming the innocent and it snapped him in half. The man cares about others first, and himself second.
In fact, the entire pathology of his madness is because he thinks he's serving others' wishes - in his case, the dead. He doesn't want revenge for himself - he thinks OTHER PEOPLE want it.
This is why I truly believe the Blue Lions were initially intended to be the canon route, or even the only route. Dimitri is the only one with an actual character arc with real change and a unique perspective.
Just my two cents, and I've left a lot of points out, but that's the gist of my perspective. I empathize with all three lords, but only Dimitri has my respect.
Oh, and three hopes is fanfiction. Some of it was fine story-wise, but the retcons and outright canon-defying backbending they did there were pretty bad.

the beauty of the kingdom in 3H is that it truly feels like you're an underdog taking on the MUCH stronger evil empire in a war. you feel every once of being that underdog when your homeland is a frozen wasteland and you are barely managing to survive the winter, let alone a war. most people love playing as/rooting for the underdog against an evil empire with all the power, wealth, and prosperity. it works very well for a video game where your lord is prince of this underdog, poverty stricken kingdom in a war against a much stronger empire with all the power.

Northern climate is something I love, but I agree that the state of their government is a mess. And personally I love Edelgarde, of the house leaders I'd say she's the smartest of the 3. Her main problem is having her bloodthirsty servant Hubert around aside from the Empire's own corrupt nobles. Though Hubert does kinda chill out when he has one of the ladies support, Bern and Dorothea I think are the best for him, Petra is probably good for him too. I'm pretty much against the church simply because I don't think religion has a place in politics. One thing I really hate about Three Houses is Edelgard or Rhea/Seiros get hit with the crazy stick off screen when either is your final boss. Though for Rhea I think it makes more sense for her to go crazy than it does for Edelgard cause she's actually trying to get rid of the crest and no crest hierarchy and employ people based on their skills in and out of combat. I'm fully onboard with her unifying Fodlan under the Empire cause of the 3 I see it as the most stable. I'm aware of the flaws, but she's at least trying to fix the issues whereas everyone else just wants to keep the status quo. Rhea is obviously unhealthily hanging onto the past and if she was a smart and wise dragon she would've moved on a long time ago. I know Edelgard is kind of indirectly responsible for Byleth's dad dying, but not entirely cause as both her and the crazy mages that we briefly encounter in the story just have a temporary alliance and don't actually obey any orders, the situation in general is a grey area that honestly doesn't bother me much cause Jeralt is barely there in the story and he doesn't act like a parent

Lamie was one of the elites, wich probably means their family once lived in the north to north-east of Foldlan like the rest of the elites and probably got wiped on some war at some point. Some time later the descendant of a survivor gets picked up into the Martriz and then by the Bartels when the Martriz die off. And after the "incident" they get back to the kingdom, including the relic if you recruit Jeritza in AG, so its kind of a full circle. But yes, for an unspecified amount of time the Martriz where the one singular Adrestian noble house with a crest that wasn't of the saints and a relic along with it.

I feel like Mercedes could've easily been Dimitri's therapist in this situation especially if Byleth wasn't around. Considering how pure she is, surely even she could've pushed through to him plus with a little help of Felix's (pessimistic yet realistic) viewpoints just without the insults. They could've gradually started trying to talk to him in cutscenes in between chapters, rodrigue only gets injured (though seriously why did he yeet himself when his sword could reached to stab the assassin first), Dimitri realizes his wrongdoings and turns around right then and there.
Blue Lions is still my favorite group.

Maybe, but the thing about Mercie is that she's very passive towards the desires of others and wouldn't function as a proper bastion for Dimitri's sanity, since she doesn't have the courage to tell him no.
Felix could be helpful, but I feel his biggest flaw is that while he knows there's a problem, he can't understand it as a sickness as opposed to a moral failing, so all he can do is antagonize and stigmatize Dimitri, which could make things worse.
Also, Rodrigue parrying the knife wouldn't have exactly stopped it from stabbing Dimitri, and given its make, that likely would have still been dangerous.
