Ya know, I haven’t quite figured out the Detroit Fire Department’s ‘let it burn policy’ or their ‘ no exposure protection’ policy in just about every video I see of their department. Embarrassing to other fire departments.

Job = get in the firetruck, go to the fire, stand back and watch it burn

They are well and truly going INSIDE to fight an exterior fire. That should work out well. Ridiculous as it may seem, that is the USA way!

It's sad.but,that house was doomed before the first truck arrived and there was no stopping it. Protect surrounding buildings and let it burn.

Hopefully there were no injuries to anyone related to this incident, Thank you to all firefighters everywhere for protecting the citizens of your coverage area.

This fire could easily take off burning other things. Where's the water?

Let it burn policy, Many cities are doing this now. If the house is abandoned, squatters, homeless live in or you have not paid your taxes or are evicted, let it burn and only protect the structures around if there not in the same situation. Reply

Does Detroit have any buildings that aren’t abandoned and boarded up??

I get it because I have been in the firefighting occupation for over 30 years but do you ever ask the question why some cities even have a fire department? I understand Detroit including DFD has its challenges -- but whatever happened with quickly establishing a water supply and at least get water on a fire/exposure(s). I am afraid firefighters in many large cities are simply burnt out (no pun intended) and are caught between a rock and hard-spot awaiting retirement age??? This is sad for those that depend on a rapid responding and reacting fire department to respond and do the job!!!

I do not get the strategy of dumping a tank using a pipe without having a water supply established??? Do they really think it is going to stave off the fire of this magnitude??? Frustrating to watch! Now they lay reverse lay out to the hydrant after wasting time dumping 500 gpm through a 250-300 gpm pipe tip???

for 1 thing detroit is broke n has many fd trucks broke down n cant fix them....and if its a vacant house they let it burn down so they dont have to come back when it burns again.....

Unfortunately it is so typical for DFD, but they call it urban renewal! Fire Protection is a priority in Detroit! Burn down the old tenements for new homes. 😂

Why did they ever send that ladder truck if they weren’t going to set up a ,ladder pipe off of it.

Help me here? If it’s policy/sog to let vacant burn, what happened to exposure 1? Is this rural Detroit. Long response distance? First arriving should have protected exposure , it does look to have lights on.. I have yet to see any aggressive interior .. or is this channel slow to get to scene and only arrives after the crews are pulled out? Just looking for some insight.

Got to love the way Detroit handles its urban renewal program. No demo cost to the taxpayer.

It seems to me like those twin nozzles on that tower ladder should of made short work of that fire. If they are vacants, maybe the DFD wanted to let them burn? I’m not sure of the strategy here…….

Controlled burn is better for the City of Detroit than having to go through the hassle of a demolition. I assume the house was abandoned. Squatters, Preservationists and legal issues averted.

Did you all see how fast that furnace was turned off with a two second application of exterior water? Now, they have to do it on the left side. A few seconds of water and that room is shut off. The problem in both locations is that they didn't think about where the water was going and what it was accomplishing. They needed to soak the entire room so it would not rekindle. That means, moving your feet to cover the entire room. The tower water isn't getting to the burning material, so it is only testing the gutter system. This structure needed a hard and effective exterior attack followed by an aggressive interior attack. The latter didn't seem to happen. The tower water application destroyed the floors below. This did NOT have to be a total loss.

Why aren't they hitting the bulk of the fire at the get go? Protecting the exposures at the beginning is fine as but hit the bulk of the fire.
