Will it run? A Christmas present from a fellow youtuber.
I got in touch with Trains with Shane about a month back and asked if he would be interested in buying each other locomotives for Christmas. He and I decided we needed a little Christmas and did buy each other a locomotive, here's what I received.
Please sub to Shane channel :

The SAL bought about 180 RS-3's numbered 1100 thru 1200 series. The 1105,a 6 axle model, had wheel slip problems due to the weight not being distributed evenly on the trucks.

For the record yes, there was at least one Gold Bonnet Santa Fe PA1 in real life in 1960 as a General Electric publicity stunt. Just Google "gold alco PA1" to find at least one photo of the prototype.

Merry Christmas everyone! Glad you like it, Peter! I was prepared for a long drug out search process to find something appropriate but when that popped up it was a no-brainer. I'm glad it runs as a Kato should. this paint scheme did exist in real life on ATSF 53 but not for very long. From the research that I was able to find less than a year and closer to 6 months along with a few matching cars and toured the west toast of California as a GE promotion.

I've been seeing a similar starter set (not Christmas themed, but otherwise pretty much identical) at Hobby Lobby for $129. And despite being primarily an HO modeller, I've been tempted to get it as I live in a very tight space. Thank goodness I've resisted if it's anywhere near as garbage as this. Makes me feel like a fool for trying to defend Bachmann based on their recent developments in their HO range. But no, their N scale stuff is utter junk. So glad I didn't waste my money.

18:40 has a glaring error. I'd like to know how EMD managed to build a loco only 55.5" in length. And 4' longer than standard? That would make the standard 7.5" in length. Dang, where did the engineer sit?😁

I ran many, many SD40 and dash 2's. The ones that CR bought weighed only 368,000 lbs. very lite weight and too slippery. When I went to work for ATSF out of Denver on the Joint (joke) Line, I ran all the BN and ATSF SD40-2's. The ATSF SD40-2's weighed a little over 390,000 lbs., and the BN weighed 421,000 lbs. The BN SD 40-2's did not have extended range dynamic brakes, and no dynamic brake interlock. These locomotives were engineer's engines, nearly perfect in every way.

The solder connections need to be smoother to insure good connect. A good precaution is to first test on a program track with low voltage to see if you have good electrical connectivity before trying on a test track with full voltage. you lose less decoders that way use the smoke test.

I did that train show last year, decent mix of scales and vendors there. The only real disappointment if you can call it that is Albany itself. Leaving the show I had a few hours to get my train home (I took Amtrak there and back) and Albany has no real food or restaurant scene near there. I did find a decent bar with some good pub grub down the street, but that was about it. Maybe I didn't walk the right direction, but yeah kinda a dead downtown. Syracuse in November is a great show (many of the same vendors) and there if all else fails Dinosaur BBQ is always an option not far away.

There are a few possibilities for this. To start with, moves can sometimes take years to be made and or use old footage. The most likely is that railroads cannot change their image overnight, as it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time not to mention the need to take the equipment out of service to repaint it. You can find many a fallen flags, out of business railroad, logo on rolling stock, even if said company went out of business decades before. Thanks for watching!

I have many miles as a brakeman in the U-18B on the SCL. The engine's were lighter in weight and could go on the many branch lines we had at the time. Today you can see them in action on the " Pickens" RR in the Carolinas.

I believe the introduction of Diesel power actually hastened the fall of the passenger train in the USA. When the traveling public saw the new streamlined F-series locomotives, they expected speed and when timetables remained the same or slowed they concluded the train offers no advantage over a car on the new limited-access highways, so they walked away.

Why do people keep saying 2-cycle diesels are far less efficient than 4-cycles? That's true of carbureted gas engines, but absolutely not true of uniflow 2-stroke diesels. EMD woukd not have been successful if the SD40 was a major fuel hog compared to U-boats. Beaeing in mind, this fight was happening during the oil crisis, I think the EMDs were plenty efficient enough. The most fuel-efficient piston engine ever produced by mankind is a marine 2-cycle diesel.

It’s David Burnell again. I sent you a comment three months ago asking the producer of this video…. Where did the locomotive come from? (At 10:50 into the video) As I recognize the rail cars behind the locomotive but I don’t recognize that locomotive is that in the US or Canada or is it in Europe and if so, either way they know the manufacturer?

Thank you so much for the videos. They are well researched and have excellent video support. When volunteering with the WMSRR in the 90's, I was able to brake and help maintain the two FA's they had on lease. They also had an RS-3 and RDS-5. The FA's and RS-3's were wonderful runners and did not slip with consists going up Mount Savage. The ruling grade near Frostberg was 1.75% and then went up to 3.04% on the last mile which was the old C&P line. I really enjoyed working on them and was blessed to actually work on a lash up of FA A-A's. That was special. The only problem with the 251's is oil leaks in a couple of areas. However, it wasn't bad for an engine built in 1954.
