Welcome to the reChurch Podcast, hosted by Justin and Brooke Knoop.
As we speak, there is a massive number of people leaving the institutional Church...but interestingly, they aren’t walking away from Jesus. Many of us have noticed a significant gap between what we see in the Bible and what we experience on Sunday mornings. Let’s talk about it.

The REAL Reason Church Leadership is Broken (we've been lied to) ft. Neil Cole | #reChurch Ep. 14
Was Church leadership mean to be a hierarchy? Why is the Church system failing us? Where do we find a Senior Pastor in the bible? What are the 5-fold gifts and are they still for today? Should Church leaders carry title?
These are all valid questions, and questions many might deem dangerous. Today on the reChurch Podcast we break down what the Bible actually says about leadership in the Church and how the 5-fold gifts were designed to function.
This is a deep episode, so relax, grab a seat, turn on your ears and prepare for action. Today we talk Church leadership.

How to Share the Gospel - Simple and Powerful!
PREACH!!!!! HOW TRUE!!@!@
💙 Church is too much like School. Y’all shut up & listen. All facing the teacher.
💙 Shepherding not exalted it means being with the sheep. Evangelists as in Charismatic let’s get ‘‘em saved is exalted.
💙 Seminaries teach heresy. Teaching what was taught in the Council of Nicaea.
Nope.
Thank you. That was very insightful.
And if your not close to anyone except yr children?
When he talked about the teacher 😭🙌🏽
AMEN....ON TIME WORD!!!
This is one of Jesus Christs soldiers.. God bless us all.. Amen ❤🙏🏽❤️
Thank you! So good
When you describe considering the strongest arguments against your own position or "playing the devil's advocate against yourself," it's called steel-manning, the opposite of straw-manning. A very helpful exercise indeed, especially if you articulate it on behalf of your opposition. You can also be charitable toward their weaker arguments. Homeschooling triggered our journey away from the institutional church as well. So many of our church friends struggled through COVID when they were forced to homeschool unexpectedly. When something had to give, they compromised their faith community. Because we already homeschooled, our family weathered that storm rather seamlessly. This made us wonder how institutionalized consumer Christians will respond when true adversity and persecution begins? I believe institutional "above-ground" churches will either compromise truth, which many already are, or be forced to close their doors due to financial catastrophe. However, the underground home church will wake up the next day ready to face it head-on. I want my boys to be equipped and encouraged for that day.
Amen!!
I am so thankful I have found people who think and feel the same way about Church and everything in it and about it as I do Thank you God
In a house church setting.. who will be the officiant in a child dedication or a wedding? Thank you
AMEN!!!!!PREACH!!!!!
The Gospel message. Believe in Jesus, Repent, and get baptized for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at your baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. The blessings from God are spiritual not material. Be careful not to be confused about this.
👍🏻x1000
This makes me tear up!!! My life changed when Francis Chan wrote his own book on home churches. To know Francis started his journey of breaking free from the main stream of church because of Neil’s book, feels surreal 🥹
What book did Francis write concerning house church? Would love to read it
@ Letters to the church
Really good conversation. Thank you
Where has Neil been all my life lol! Justin you can probably relate to that! Sometimes God has you walk the same journey as men like this and then shows you their life and confirms you were not alone, but rather in the remnant! What a courageous, humble, Jesus loving man!
Such a wealth of wisdom. I wish I could have done 10 episodes with him.
@@reChurchpodcast and not just wisdom but obedience based life for so long! It's so important!
This one was much better than the last one!
Hello from Fort Worth!! I just came across your channel today, I haven’t listened to much but it sounds like yall are on the right track. Being out of church is super important but getting church out of you is a whole other thing. I’m always encouraged when I hear, which isn’t much, but I know it’s there; other people growing correctly in the good news of resting in Jesus and the true freedom from being a slave to a free child of God. It’s beautiful but the web that must be untangled is a process. It’s been a 15 year journey for me that’s been quite amazing and definitely unexpected. I wanted to share a book I came across several years ago. Nothing in it would be new information for you, just encouraging of how God is at work in many of us around the world, it’s called Mere Churchianity. This is the only book he has ever written and is a nobody, but very well written. I wish yall all the best with your podcast, this is not my calling but I pray as you are obedient to His direction many people will find the freedom to start asking questions about what they believe and why. It’s hard for people to do that because so much fear has been placed in our hearts about questioning our faith; or what I would call it examining yourself and the gospels that have been presented to you. All the Best! Regan
Love your discussions. The intros are driving me nuts though, music is drowning out the talking. Just thought I would mention it :) you are doing good work!
Thanks for the feedback, will take that into account
Not unlike AA which was divinely inspired and started with Christian Bible Study. It’s all about aspiring to be a sponsor - and the sponsor learns by sponsoring others. Discipleship 🙌🏻
This is so helpful and articulates why we felt called out of the institution of the church and are having a thriving Holy Spirit led home church!
Protestant Ministers give out fake Holy Communion. Catholic and Orthodox Priests give out authentic Holy Communion. Do you want the Eucharist or not?
Great word!!!
MAN. I just discovered reChurch - but this is amazing. Love Neil Cole's work, and I am PINCHING myself that this material is getting even more air time. Love you guys. Would love to interview either one or both of you.
No, we are not all commanded to baptize and make disciples. What people have called "The Great Commision" was speaking specifically to the apostles. The word apostle means sent by God. It is not describing all those who go out, for many have gone out in their own name. Those in the flesh are focused on the outward, looking at the travel or the activity of going out. But Apostles are those who are raised up, prepared in their spirit, and sent by God, whether they travel great distances or not. We can all testify of the work that has been done in us. However, apostles have been granted the authority of God to plant the holy seed of God. They can plant faith in those whose hearts have been prepared to receive it. Romans 10:15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),. What Paul is describing nullifies all those sent out by man's ambitions and institutions. The apostle is set apart by God to be a spiritual father, one who can plant the kingdom of God in someone's heart, they preach/plant faith. So that we are no longer just interacting with the Holy Spirt, or having the Spirit On us, but The Holy Spirit comes to dwell IN us by the laying on of hands of the apostle. Imparting the kingdom is not for a novice, for whatever is given, whether pure or corrupt, is multiplied in the one receiving. As in "you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves." Also be aware that deceiving spirits can be imparted by anyone, so they desire any willing worker to spread like a virus. What you see happening everywhere is men who have come in their own name, not sent by God, and making disciples of themselves. They ignore true righteousness and holiness to focus on making disciples, to boast in their works of ministry, to glorify self. They are planting partial truths, perversion, presumption, speculations, and other men's opinions. They are planting corrupt seeds into those who esteem their knowledge, or title, or religious organization. They do not have the authority to birth anyone into the kingdom and therefore are only building a kingdom for themselves. That corrupt foundation will have to be uprooted in the heart before anyone can be built on the rock. True spiritual authority must be recognized and submitted to, it is not forced upon others, nor is it imposed, but it is offered for the other's sake. The true foundation of the kingdom is the apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. These foundational roles are not something man can set out to be or do. They are chosen by God to go through a lengthy process of preparation and suffering so they can lead by example, as the support and foundation, holding up the body, not lording over it. This eliminates all these self-appointed "apostles" and "prophets" that exist on the world stage today. Men motivated by selfish ambition have gone out to feed their idol of ministry by overtaking everyone who will submit themselves to their carnal knowledge and well-spoken biblical opinions that can only lead to death. I am not saying any of this so that people will try to track down someone claiming to be an apostle. The point is that if someone comes in the name of the Lord, sent by God, with His authority, what they speak will be a reality in them. It will not look like anything that exists today, for it is all corrupt. They speak what has been received from heaven, what has been written on their heart, as a testimony of the revelation of Jesus Christ that has been revealed in the spirit. That is what can be imparted to others, so we can actually do what we are all called to do, which is actually be an expression of Christ, to walk as Jesus walked in true righteousness and holiness, to be in this world yet not of it. If we are not first doing that, then all the activity is just trying to act out our own formula of biblical rules, to try and make up for a conscience that is not clear. Matthew 23:38 Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! 39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
Try using paragraphs.
Very well said and insightful, not many able to see and hear the truth because of spiritual blindness, blinded by their own ambitions and desires.
The promise coexists with the command.
This is what I’ve been feeling for a while now thanks for this I needed this so much
Megachurch may be "one size fits some" just like the audience at America's Got Talent or a TED talk. For some it works (whatever "works" may mean) and for others not so much. But why the big emphasis on "gathering" in the first place? Was "gathering" a major priority for the early church? Even with house churches today, we make a lot of assumptions about frequency and content. WHEN we gather, we are to edify. ALL things are to be done for edification. But if I'm at work and having lunch with a colleague and I share some spiritual thing, is that negated because I'm not in a "house church"? I think there's over-emphasis on meetings and "fellowship" and "community" and insufficient focus on life as worship and holy living. Our "house church" devolved into a breakfast club before it collapsed. LOTS of focus on the "form" of the group, little on the essentials.
Everything that was discussed here is so RICH! I feel I need to re listen to just marinate more! Thank y’all for taking the time to discuss this topic!!! 🎉
So good thank you!
You both are doing great. But I’m seeing lots of unanswered questions in your threads. And they’re good questions. How are you guys getting around to answering them? I think people want to know what the next steps are in forming or looking for a house church so they can learn how to move forward.
Thanks for the clarity and the breakdown of why things are the way they are.....its all set up, situated and ran by teachers. I think I am understanding the source of my head and heart ache. I have been banging my head going to church and just struggling for decades wondering what's wrong with me. Thanks again.
Sooo good 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you!! A friend and brother in Christ shared this video with me and I loved it. I have struggled for a while trying to find missing pieces of what is wrong. When the Holy Spirit is trying to lead us it’s so hard to allow Him to. I feel like a complete sinner and failure to think outside the box of modern religion. This has helped me so much! God bless you guys!!
This conversation is 🔥 I’ve been studying this whole idea of a covering over the past few months
When he said using your gifts shouldn’t mean others have to sit on theirs. Whew that was good
Thank you for being faithful. It is encouraging for many to find out they are not alone.
We need to bear in mind from the very beginning that Evangelism Is NOT SALES. We're not selling Jesus as a product for a new and improved and better life. Jesus is not the means to some end - Jesus is the end. Secondly and no less important, Jesus is LORD. Living under His Lordship is what it means to be a Christian. You both already know this, but a lot of Christians don't. They think "Jesus as Savior" can be separated from Jesus as Lord; that you can avoid hell without making Jesus the Lord of your life. In fact, some folks (and I've met them) think so-called "Lordship Salvation" is a heresy.
When you have an elevated platform, chairs or pews all facing the pulpit, one man at the pulpit talking for just under one hour, and getting paid for it as well as calling the shots, you will automatically get a pyramid hierarchical structure. When you have a level platform, all the chairs facing each other in a circle with none elevated, and everyone participates and contributes including the exercising of all the spiritual gifts (more than 5), and no one getting paid for any of it, and the Lord/Holy Spirit in control, then you get the Biblical church structure and functioning as God intended. Until then, we will not.
I appreciate the conversation. I resonate with a lot of what you're saying about the "organized church." However, I wonder if two things can be true at once? I know a lot of pastors who serve with great humility in the roles and giftings they've been given. They aren't power hungry or "leadership" driven (in the sense that you've talked about), I honestly believe they encourage the kind of organic growth that I hear you guys speak of. Church, the "establishment," is never the "end all be all" for them. It's much more an opportunity to promote and develop spiritual maturity. I won't argue that "the church" as understood in our western context is FAR from perfect and in many ways has become something God never intend. However, no matter "the method" of church (or I'll add the method of discipleship making) that you ascribe to or believe is the most authentic to scripture, can't Jesus use all of it (Mark 6:38-41)? Again, I don't say this to defend the "institution" OR call out the "un-institutional." My observation is that both are effective (in their own flawed ways) to accomplish the ministry of the gospel by the grace of God. Is either system perfect? I would probably argue, no. Is what "church" has become today, biblical? Again, I would say, no. I love the conversation, though, of NOT being okay with where the church is at and what it has become. And with that said, I also realize the monumental task of seeing our current "model" of church change. But I'll continue to pray. In the meantime, I believe God over and over uses broken man, broken methods and structures to accomplish his purposes (that's honestly all of scripture). Again, love your conversations and continue to pray for God's people, the Church, to be unified and built up to all Godliness and the going out of the gospel. Blessings.
What do your sundays schedules look like now?
I am just struggling with knowing If am in the faith! Me and my wife both. We both have had an experience. She was in church as a 8 year old and I was 19 on the side of the road. We have been faithful to a building and I’ve even preached for years and we have been on this journey the past year of finding the real Jesus. Now we are up again this wall of are we truly born again. Never thought I’d be here or even commenting a UA-cam channel lol but we want Jesus and we want to serve him!! Pray for us. Thank you. Your show is a blessing and it’s putting words to what we have been feeling and learning!
I’m amazed at the humility and depth of this teaching. The Holy Spirit is all over this video. I’ll need to play this on repeat for a few days!May JESUS bless you both!
Dang, when he starts talking about the 5 fold gifts around 27:00 😭
“Can we just make disciples..” has a nice ring. Sounds simple. Not sure it is.
Not sure how many pastors are attached to a paycheck. Probably a bit strong on that. Many would turn over the paycheck. Butch we y do want to do well, paycheck or not.
