    How do you find difficult hills on this bike? You must have flatter terrain than I do forget which gear you have on your bike - could never do in my hilly town. I have an E Brompton, but I am looking into getting a nonelectric to fly around the world with. Likely a 12 speed. Matching bike and helmet very chic!

      @@GGg-ic9ku hi, thanks for watching and sharing. I have found the hills difficult and Paul would usually suggest to people to go for a 6 gear or above option. And our city is hilly! However, we live at the top of the hill so if I’m in the city I am generally on the flat. When we filmed this video I pushed it up the final hill (5-7 min walk) but we have other options like train or bus 👍

      @ 😅 I don’t feel so bad then. You both are in much better shape than I because you do bike tours and cycle much more - something I hope to start doing a lot more of next year my first bike tours and hopefully can learn to camp like you both do. Would love to visit your town someday and Scotland from previous replies and discussions that we’ve had on your site about wonderful places to bike with a Brompton in your incredible country. I love my C Explore because I'm retired and have the time to travel to visit friends and family. I used to rent and borrow bikes, but I love to have a bike I know well, always at hand. I live on the ocean in Florida, so I also had a beach cruiser I got for free, but it can't leave home. I learned that my Brommie is better for me because even though I paid nothing for the cruiser, I still locked it outside places and worried a bit about it getting stolen. And it was eventually stolen. If you haven't seen Andrew Richie's explanation that he invented the Brompton because his regular bikes were repeatedly stolen outside his London engineering job, it's a treat. I call myself a cycling flaneur. Flaneur means to go for a stroll wherever your whims take you. It turns out that my Brompton does that very well because it takes any road in its stride. A few years ago my whims started taking me off-road, and to my surprise, the Brompton seems to like it!

    It will grow on you it is different in a good way. I fitted an extension handlebar retainer (from SJS Cycles) which allows you to move the levers / assemblies up to a more normal hand position. I tried the 3-ply Scrowave spring based on the manufacturer guidelines of my riding bodyweight (80Kgs)-this completely ruined the ride making it very harsh and unforgiving, changing down to the 2-ply was hugely better in giving a balance of stiffness and compliance, at £80 each the initial purchase was an expensive mistake….

    The seatpost is one of the parts that you can kind of cheap out on, since it's just a single piece of titanium without any mechanical parts. I got a cheap one for a 100 bucks and it works perfectly. I think the next part to replace is the rear rack, the brompton one is so big and bulky, and suprisingly also incredibly weak. The H&H racks are all really good, they have survived like 10 flights so far!

    I recently bought a used 2006 Brompton. It seems to be lightly used over its lifetime. After I bought my bike, I bought a 39t chain ring, hoping to do the replacement you did I. This video. Unfortunately, when the ring arrived I discovered that my “new” bike had a different type of chainring than newer models so the new ring would not work, so I sent it back. I asked a local Brompton dealer to do the work for me. He refused, saying he would not do the work because Brompton did not have a smaller chainwheel, and installing a “Chinese knockoff” would not work well. Now that I’ve ridden the bike in my hilly neighborhood, of Northern Kentucky, I’m still determined to make my old Brompton more hill worthy. After all, I’m 78, in reasonably good shape, and determined to ride for many more years. So, what ideas do you have to solve my problem? Do you know of a 39, 40, 41, or so tooth chainwheel that will work on this bike? I will either find a mechanic here who will install it, or buy the tools myself and do the job myself. Thanks in advance for your help. This old Brompton has already improved my life. I can take a .6 mile short cut from my house to my local grocery store. But when I drive, the trip is 2 miles. I love the comments as I grocery shop with my bike.

    • @veloworks9266

      Hi Paul, thanks for the message and glad you love your Brompton! There isn’t a great selection of chain wheels with 39/40t that are good quality. It would be best to purchase to purchase a modern Brompton chainset and had the chain ring you want. This is a very simple job and if the chain line is affected then all you would need is a different size bottom bracket. It’s a very simple job for a bike shop and I’m confused why one would refuse to do it. Maybe try another shop?

    • @paulbuelterman392
      @paulbuelterman392 5 днів тому

      Paul, Not being a bike mechanic, I didn’t fully understand your reply. Am I correct in assuming that if I or my mechanic buy and install a modern Brompton chainset, then I can install another brand 39t 5 bolt chain ring? Then if the chain line is a problem, then a new bottom bracket could be installed. From reading your fan’s comments, a 39t Shimano chainwheel would be a good choice, maybe even better than the TA that you installed in the video. Also, I am little embarrassed to say that I’m not exactly sure what is included in the definition of a chainset. Is that chain, and spider to connect to the 5 bolt 130 bcd modern chain wheel? I would have just carried my old Brompton to the bike shop with your previous reply for his information but I just wanted to be sure understand you first. Thanks from Kentucky! I would love to get this bike cranking like I hope I can without pushing up moderate hills! I can’t afford a new Brompton right now! Paul B

      @ nuts and bolts - will just be steel so replacing the best way forward. Some wire wool lightly used may get rid of some of the rust on the hub. Otherwise you’ll just need to live with it. Prevention is the best option moving forward. Hope that helps

    I have a bike from a short-lived US brand called Barracuda. It was a 1994 model that was originally a hard tail but I made some changes to it. I gave it a rigid steel fork, wider flat bars, new v-brakes, converted it to 1x, and put some nice wide 26x2.2 chunky tires on it. I actually use it for gravel and single track. I’m really just getting into mountain biking and honestly I limit the bike way more than the bike limits me at this point. It’s really easy for me to get fixated on getting the best/most expensive gear, but I’m so glad I took the time in to restoring this bike. I love the bike, and I learned so much about building, maintaining, and fixing bikes. I figured out how to set up the derailleur, dial in the brakes, built the wheels wheels, and got familiar with all the various bike standards for handlebars, bottom brackets, axels, etc in the process. You just can’t buy that sort of knowledge/experience from a bike store

    Hello, I am also considering the Ti parts seat post for my Brompton but the cost is quite significant. I found also that Brompfication makes also one which can be used with the pentaclip, which is significantly cheaper. I think that they are a reputable brand as the Ti parts, do you happen to have any feedback from customers maybe about this one as well?

I grind about in all the London filth and crap on my fixie but keep an eye on my chain with a wear gauge ( one that says its for 1/8" track chains ? ) Ive lost count of the number of chains Ive been through, and although I have changed my rear cog twice , so far my overpriced chainring is still going strong.

    I have a steel frame, it's not from a maker of renown, before stripping it down and painting it, the stickers wrote sentosa (probably a cheap make but a great chromoly frame, it was stripped down for 2 days and it didn't even begin to rust), the only thing that stayed the same is the frame and the rims of the wheels. The wheels were rebuilt with a modern HG hub and new spokes, 11-40 rear cassette and 2 speed crankset 39-53. The brakes and shifters combination is micronew, cheap brand but works exceptionally well. It's a thing of wonder, it feels better than carbon bikes, and it's faster than most of the bikes I've seen. My max speed was about 64 kmh on a flat at around 100 rpm. I started building it for the fun of it and now i can't stop riding the thing.

    I swear, the argument I keep getting into with people is about carbon wheels verses aluminum wheels. I am against using carbon wheels anymore. I have had a few sets and I still have two sets, all have been disc brake. My latest three wheel builds have been with aluminum rims. I really can't tell a difference except that the aluminum rims are cheaper so if I had to replace a rim it would so much easier and cheaper than a carbon rim. The aero claims are a big reason I don't like carbon rims. For me it just means I am going to have to fight turbulence to keep driving in a straight line and maintain control of my bike. The aluminum rims I've built are actually lighter than the carbon wheels I own one set being the Campagnolo Shamal Carbons and the other is from BOYD. Aluminum was good enough for many many decades now all of a sudden these noobs want argue that it isn't any good compared to carbon. They are wasting their words on me I'll tell you.

      Hi Raymond, thanks for sharing. Due to marketing in the bike industry you can find some cyclists have a very one dimensional view of cycling and therefore believe one way is right e.g carbon wheels, 1x groupsets etc. Carbon wheels do have their place but so do alloy wheels for many reasons including the ones you’ve said 👍

    Some years ago, I bought a Giant with 11 speed 105. Passed the frame on but used the group set on many different builds. I recently bought a used 105 gearset for $250 Canadian (150 pounds?) that will last another 10 years. I use 10 speed with friction bar ends on vintage frames.

    • @veloworks9266

      The shifters are placed in the same place as the old shifters as this is the customers preferred position. When working on any bike we don’t change shifter or saddle position unless requested.

    These derailleurs shouldn't be operated without spinning the cranks when the chain is installed (obviously) - this is how you damage them in the long run. I'd be pissed if that was my bike.

    • @veloworks9266
      @veloworks9266 27 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment and sorry you seem to keep finding flaws in what we do. Moving these derailleur a small amount whilst the chain is static does not cause any damage at all and part of the set up of these derailleurs is to move them whilst static. If you don’t like what we do then don’t watch our videos. Happy cycling!

    • @channul4887
      @channul4887 26 днів тому

      @@veloworks9266 yes you can move them whilst static... without the chain - i.e. without counter force. With chain in situ the force applied is strong enough (especially the front derailleur) to cause micro cracking if the shifting isn't executed fully. Yes, it won't break straight away, i.e. it won't be your problem, but this being a weak point and them failing because of this is a fairly known fact. And please don't gaslight me, thank you.
