Join me as I fix up a 1949 Spartan Manor trailer and use it as a base to start building a house on some land in the countryside with my mom. Plus other random DIY jobs along the way.
I've learned a lot from people here on UA-cam and hope my videos can be useful to others.

Improving My Home's Curb Appeal | Porch Ceiling in Natural Wood
I've been wanting to tackle this project for years and feels great to finally have done it! For about $400 and two days of work, I was able to cover my 100 square foot front porch ceiling with tongue and groove boards. In this episode I'll show you how I did it, share some tips and also what I would do differently next time.
If you're tackling a similar project, I hope this video helps you out!
I have a couple other projects lined up to help improve my home's curb appeal, including replacing the front door and putting up some stone veneer over the concrete foundation of my porch.

Simple Stove Backsplash | Glass Tiles | $130 DIY
Переглядів 8614 днів тому
In this video, I'll show you how I installed a simple glass tile backsplash for my stove, choosing a size and layout that didn't require any cuts. So basically an easy install with just some tile adhesive and grout. Overall this project only cost about $130 and, if you didn't have them already, perhaps some $25 in tile-specific tools. Repairing the Shell Structure | Spartan Manor E17
Переглядів 8321 день тому
The aluminum shell of this 1949 Spartan Manor has, as a foundation, sections of channel around its entire perimeter, that rest on the subfloor and support the shell. Unfortunately, this foundation was seriously corroded - or even missing - in three sections. This was the most difficult aspect of our trailer renovation so far, having to figure out how to replace sections of aluminum channel that...
How to Build a DIY Greenhouse with Reused Windows
Переглядів 237Місяць тому
My sister and her boyfriend wanted to build a greenhouse, so join us in this video as we DIY a 9'x6' greenhouse with a lot of repurposed lumber, second-use windows and door, and some new materials. This was a lot of work and it was also super satisfying. Getting the framing up was exciting and then the details in the trim and siding took a long time. I hope this video proves helpful if you're t...
Home Insurance Demands! Part 3 - Siding
Переглядів 295Місяць тому
In November 2023, my insurance company sent me a letter with demands on repairs I needed to carry out on my home. The third and final demand was to repair the damaged siding. In this video, I'll show you how I tackled that task for just $36 and then I summarize my overall experience in dealing with this letter of demands. I've asked a lot of people if they've received letters like this and very...
Home Insurance Demands! Part 2 - 5-Year Roof Certificate
Переглядів 710Місяць тому
In my last video, I shared the letter of demands my home insurance company sent me after doing an exterior survey of my home. The letter from the inspector had three demands: 1.) Fix the crack in my foundation 2.) Obtain a 5-year roof certificate or replace the roof 3.) Replace the cracked siding This letter inspired a range of emotions. Particularly about the roof demand, because my roof is in...

Holy geeking out on metals! 😂
😂🤓😂🤓
Who knew!! Good to know, 👍.
Yeah it didn't seem like the were concerned about it when they built it in 1949. Maybe they weren't anticipating it lasting 70+ years haha
You can take the cylinder to a locksmith and they can rekey it to you ignition key. 😉
Ah that's a great idea! I have so many keys for my truck 😆
foreshadowing of future builds, 😊.
Great practice!
This is awesome! Even if this ends up costing as much as a newer camper you’ll have the recorded memories of yourself and mother working together on this project.
Thanks so much! Yeah it's been a great excuse to spend time together ☺️
Yay!!!!!! She got one pop rivet in!!! 😅😂❤❤
😆😆😆
So adorable and beautiful sending angels
Aww thank you!
How can you not stop everything and play with that puppy ❤❤❤
Haha he got lots of attention and treats in my house. I often wish there were a dog door in the fence so he could come visit more.
So cute! ❤
Thanks! I thought so, too :)
Love your house - it’s a story book house
Thanks! I feel so lucky to have found this house. I wanted an older one and so many in this area in my price range (7 years ago) needed a lot of work.
Oooh can’t wait at gym and watching
I went to work on my own curb appeal today, too 😆
@@danielrvilla😂😂😂❤
Glad you had extra hands to assist! All overhead, a workout! Looks great, 😃.
Always nice to have extra hands and Alice was able to be the morale booster when the stain was wrong on a few boards and one was warped :)
New subscriber here great channel. Much love to ya from Maryland❤❤❤
Thanks so much, Melvin! Very much appreciated 😊🙏
Sounds like you should fix your house
The insurance company is completely in their right to do this. I wouldn't blame them for not insuring you if something happened.
Haha I for sure want to keep it in good condition. I was annoyed about the roof because it was clearly ok, and the roof inspector in fact said it was probably good for 10 more years.
So cheeky! I never got anything like it. Adore the zoom in on your annoyed face! 😜😜😊
Hahaha it wasn't hard to summon that face. That letter was so annoying!
@@danielrvilla so obnoxious - also super expensive what they require you to do. will you change insurance company?
I can't because I have a claim history (for $0 since they wouldn't cover my sewer line repairs) and other companies won't quote even :|
Super irritating! Good thing you're handy, 😊.
very clear explanations. the visuals of the steps, tools, supplies and options are very useful - especially for a new-ish diy-er.
Glad it was clear! 😀
Looks like a lot of work
Haha it was indeed, Nick! Notice I was never standing on the top of a ladder 😉
Been there, done that on our 1946 spartan Manor. During demolition, I used a broom to sweep around the X-channel [that’s what you call the aluminum, U-shaped corroded aluminum]. You don’t need t o cut all those notches….you weakened it all! To bend the curves, you simply use a ‘Shrinker’. You can buy Shrinker and Stretcher tools just about anywhere!! You also NEVER use pop rivets!! It isn’t OK because you can’t see them. You have compromised the structure in multiple ways. Spartans don’t have any truly flat areas in the coach. Those aren’t aprons”: they are banana wraps. Shoot the dog. Your Mom is fantastic. Using OSB was a major mistake. Water will definitely work its way onto the OSB! Spartans are designed to allow water to leak down, onto/into the C-channel. You ensured the floor will rot out quickly. Sonny, you skrued the pooch badly! I replaced an entire floor on our 33’ 1950 Spartan Royal Mansion; and repaired the floor on our 25’ 1946 Spartan Manor. Like I wrote, ‘been there, done that]. You should have contacted other Spartan owners. Others about to tackle a restoration should NOT follow his advice!!!! That’ll be a dangerous Spartan on the road. Out!
Ah I had tried using a shrinker-stretcher without any success, and the jaws weren't big enough for this aluminum either! Yeah my mom is great :) Great to learn some of the terminology - haha as you can tell I was just using words that made sense to me. I did think about doing marine grade plywood but wow it was expensive. What did you use? The plan for this trailer is to be stationary and under an additional metal roof, so I'm hoping it won't get so wet.
Fantastic job, both on the trailer and the video. A friend of mine has a 33ft. 1950 spartan with all the same issues. You help relive some anxiety, help us figure out how to deal with some unknowns and are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing we know it takes a lot of work.
Thanks for the kind words! It is indeed a ton of work and seeing glimpses of what it can be is motivating. And I'm not claiming to be an expert here or anything, this is just the way I figured out how to diy it. :)
Amazing, difficult, exasperating, and finally very impressive repair work. Tenacity pays off!
It felt like we spent a lot more time on it than that! I think it took up a lot of mental space haha
Only 28 hours?! Seemed like many more! Fun riveting though, 😁. And VERY satisfying to see the outcome on this part of the project.
Congratulations!!!! One of a kind ❤
Thanks so much, Lau! It was a fun project and very satisfying in both outcome and use of second-hand materials. :)
And you have a compressor at home! That´s super cool! I wish I had one, so much better to hace pneumatic tools!
Yes! I got it from my uncle and it's super handy. I just need a bigger workshop haha
Wow Dan! You are a treasure trove of knowledge!! This video is super useful 🤩
Thanks, Bea! Riveting is really satisfying - trying to think of other things I could make with it.
🥰
Haha who doesn't love learning about septic systems?
Super useful info Dan! thanks for sharing.
Haha glad it was helpful, Bea! ;)
Hi, Have you measured how many degrees you reduced?
It hasn't been very hot since installed - the door faces south so the garage gets very hot in the summer. So we'll know more in the coming months!
I would recommend making your shorts capable of being watched in vertical mode. It being wide screened makes me not want to watch the video as much. Nonetheless great knowledge
Thanks! I thought this one might be hard to adapt and was giving it a try - it didn't seem like UA-cam liked to share non-vertical videos as other attempts had gone almost nowhere.
"mm smells like money"
Haha yes it cost a lot! I was very disappointed the county wouldn't let me install myself. They inspect it regardless!
Actually, my waste goes into the sewers and into a main processing plant where it's treated, that then treated water is released back into the waterways.
Here in Tacoma they make Tagro soil at the waste water plant and some people here swear by it for their gardens, edible and ornamental alike!
Whats a drain field
basically a bunch of pipes laid out slightly underground and when the tank gets full water is released into these pipes, where it then soaks into the ground. Great for agriculture, you can usually find a drain field by looking for super healthy grass
Haha yes exactly! My mom's backyard is particularly green over the drain field
clear and succinct, 👍.
Thanks! :)
"nobody" really thinks how all our utilities work, we just assume they do.
Yeah I didn't appreciate my sewer connection until it failed and had to use a porta potty for several days!
egad!! appropriate suspenseful music!
Haha I never felt very comfortable up there! I'm glad the pitch of the roof is not as steep for the first three feet or so.
YOU were hashing that "Circlip" like your going to break it
Haha it was pretty hard to get it into position in there!
Buck solid rivets looks better than pop rivets.
Yeah they look so good!
pop riveting tools give me genuine ptsd
Bad shop class experience?
@@danielrvilla yep same for powerdrills, sometimes when im falling asleep i just get flashbacks of sweating over a powerdrill trying to drill into a metal U beam and the feeling of the metal bending under the force and the tool slipping and making a huge noise
Main advantage of the pop rivets are, that you do not require access to both sides
I agree dude. Not only main advantage but sometimes the original function. Most rivets I've done have not been accessible hence the use of rivets lol
Yes, definitely a huge plus of the pop rivet. Plus the tool is a lot cheaper!
Having both of these going at the same time was super disorienting and hard to follow
Ah I thought it might take a couple views but at least show them together for "easier" comparison. Thanks, I'll try it serially next time!
@@danielrvilla honestly, figure out if it's more profitable when/if you're at that point and see if it's better to have 200% view time vs longer shorts profit wise ;)
Haha I'm a long way from that! Maybe one day I'll be able to make that calculation ;)
I work for a roofing company and this is happening all the time. They are cancelling everyone outside of town because of fire danger, but everyone in town is getting all kind of demands made on them under the threat of policy cancellation, often with unrealistic deadlines for getting major work done.
Ugh that's awful especially if you have to have it for your mortgage. I guess I'm lucky that they gave me over a year to comply.
why is insurance looking at your roof anyway? Mine has never even seen my house not once
Good question! I had to ask around a lot before I found anybody who had a similar story. Sounds like this might become more common and saw a headline about insurance companies using satellite images to see how your roof is doing.
Sadly most insurance is a scam be it home, health, or life.
Yeah, forced to have it for home since I have a mortgage and imagine it would be a rare occasion they would pay anything out.
@@danielrvilla Pretty well there for total home destruction and nothing else. Wish they just call it catastrophe insurance and save all our time. They give catastrophe charge for total coverage and pocket the difference between the two.
@@richardmenz3257 Ah yes, that would be a better term for it!
Contact your state's Insurance Commission and file a complaint. That should at least solve the claim history part. When you do eventually replace the roof, get a metal one.
Ah I still haven't tried that! I did call the attorney general's office but they couldn't do anything. Yes, a metal roof would be great. Now I know I have 10 years to save up for one!
uhm yeah replace the roof and have insurance pay for it. i see this is part 2 and im missing the backstory but the whole thing seems incomprehensible to me therefore the backstory won't really clear anything
Simply: they sent an inspector months ago who concluded my roof had "reached its life expectancy" and to replace it or get a five year roof certificate. They would never pay me back for replacing a roof. The roofer who did give me the certificate said he'd only seen insurance companies pay if a tree or branch fell on a roof. Basically I think they wanted me to prove my roof was ok so they would never have to fight a claim for leak damage in the future.
@@danielrvilla everybody here is filing damage claims and getting new roofs. are you in a market where they will drop coverage or something. like i dont understand what leverage ins thinks they have to demand any of this
@@johndonovan7018 Maybe their leverage was on me since I had asked if they could help cover my damage sewer line, which triggered a claim in their system even though they couldn't, and so they know I'm essentially stuck with them?
Organized crime
Haha feels like it sometimes! Frustrating to feel like I had no options.
maddening!
Very frustrating! I even called to speak to another inspector and they said the first inspector's conclusion "was our opinion"
good project, i think it will be well used!
Would be great to start tomatoes and such early with it 😋
I swear every insurance agent is now getting kickbacks from roofing companies.
Yeah and this 5-year roof certificate thing seems fairly new and uncommon 🤨
I love all of the Campaign logos in frames at your desk Dan!
haha, the whole reason I did the campaigns! ;)
perplexing insurance situation, 🤔🤨.
Yes, it's been frustrating to say the least and now the end is in sight!
another amazing project! 👍
And now back to the others...
This video is exactly what I needed. Thanks for making everything clear and understandable.
So glad it was useful and thanks for the kind words!
