  • In this "slow tv" style video, watch as we build a DIY greenhouse using old windows, lots of reclaimed wood, and some new clear plastic panels. The footprint is about 6'x9', with the longer side being determined by the width of the two back windows. We made it 6' wide to accommodate the door, a used window, and to make a small sidelight window, also so the entry wouldn't be obstructed by plants or a bench of plants.
We had started off with a plan from Etsy that would have been the wood frame simply covered in plexiglass sheets. Since all these windows were left over from my sister's remodel, we altered the framing to accommodate the various windows into the best arrangement we could find. We didn't want to mess with pouring concrete, so we simply buried some pier blocks since the frost line doesn't go very deep here.
This project was a lot of fun, and a lot of work! The finishing details - siding, trim around windows, etc - took a lot more time than expected.
