Buck (aka Solid) Riveting New Wheel Wells | Spartan Manor E09

- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- The original wheel wells of this 1949 Spartan Manor camper trailer were not in great shape due to being in contact with the steel, so it was time to replace them. In this episode, join us as we use new sheet metal, snips, a hammer, and a buck riveting (aka solid riveting) to make new ones! Come learn about clecos (I know now they're pronounced CLEE-co!), rivet guns, rivet sets, and bucking bars, which was all new to us.
Overall this part of the project cost about $1,180, with some $500 of that being for tools we'll need for the rest of the project anyway. So about $680 was for the sheet metal and rivets. In total, my Mom and I spent about 19 hours to make these two wheel wells.
Time codes:
00:51 - Cutting the wheel well sides
01:45 - Practice bending curves
02:57 - Bending the wheel well sides
05:17 - Bending the wheel well top
06:16 - Putting it together
08:08 - Buck riveting! (aka solid riveting)
11:56 - Second wheel well
12:12 - Fixing a bend
13:35 - Summary
Please let me know if this video was helpful in your own camper trailer renovation, restoration, or remodel project!
you should be using a # 30 drill bit 0.1285" for 1/8" rivets. you are getting the feel for it. Also bodywork hammers.
Ah yes, I've heard that's the right bit! Thank you.
Have been thinking about auto body hammers to work on the dents in the skin...
Looks good!
What is the name brand of your rivet/ bucking bar set?
Thanks! It's a "Wicks Aircraft Delux 3X Rivet Gun Box Set"

Very helpful thx😊
Glad it was useful!
Cut V's not slots!
Yeah, for some of those tab cuts on the curve, Vs would have removed the right amount of material, since I had to snip a few back after bending over.
😂, Daniel you are so patient!! Each step of making the wheel wells is so meticulously done. I continue to be amazed. And I never thought I'd happily rivet anything, 🎉!
You were quite the gunner! 😀 So fun to work on this with you!
What a special experience for you and mom!
Yes, I'm very lucky I get to do this project with her!
