    I feed my dogs Instinct chicken kibble raw boost for sensitive tummies now because one won’t eat any other brand. My dogs love the food and their poop is finally great. I used your scale to compare and it’s within limits.. I will say the protein is a bit higher at 31% not off by much. Instinct uses a freezing method to kill off bacteria. I agree, pregnant woman should be careful when dealing with freeze dry raw, but instinct pet food has been a blessing in our home ❤ I feel overwhelmed with joy that I found this food. My dog is smiling all the time and is so excited for feeding time. Regarding raw: I believe dogs can eat raw and raw is more natural for them. There is not an animal in the world, who eats meat, that eats it cooked. I agree, raw can be dangerous if not handled properly

    I need your opinion! I just emailed Purina pro plan for their dry matter analysis for sensitive skin and stomach, the salmon and lamb formulas. I just assumed they were good because it's a huge reputable company. But look... Purina® Pro Plan® brand Dog Food - Specialized - Sensitive Skin & Stomach - Salmon & Rice Formula - Dog Food Protein - 29.5% Fat - 19.6% Calcium - 1.45% Phosphorus - 1.14% Purina® Pro Plan® brand Dog Food - Specialized - Sensitive Skin & Stomach - Lamb & Oat Meal Formula - Dog Food Protein - 29.6% Fat - 20.0% Calcium - 1.51% Phosphorus - 1.05% Is this ok? or way over on the calcium and phosphorus?

      It’s within AAFCO but yet higher than the ideal ranges. It’s important to always understand that just because it’s not ideal doesn’t mean it’s “toxic” so you have to balance all the factors. It may Be more medically important to certain pets depending on their physical status, but I’ve never diagnosed a pet with a disease because of food (a commercially balanced food)

    Dr. Rea would you be able to do a review on Purina? I contacted them today and they said they do not have phosphorus or calcium levels available for their dry cat food. And they also said they were not permitted to share the nutritional information with me when I asked for it. This is baffling to me? Why would they not be able to share this information? How are nutrient levels proprietary information? Perhaps they misunderstood me. But this information should be readily available for the consumer. Especially when you have aging cats. All they were willing to give me was the minimum and maximums which are on the product label and website. Both of which do not include calcium and phosphorus.

      @@AnimalDocRea Oh I was asking about the PPP Sensitive Skin and Stomach Formula - Turkey and Oat Formula. I called back and spoke with the same agent. She said they do not have their nutrient levels on a dry matter basis but rather the Min/Max. She did give me the levels and both CA/PH were 1.2% and up for this formula, which is too high for my senior kitty anyways. I’m glad I got this information but it’s still not on a dry matter basis but I guess if I wanted to I could do the conversions myself. Very different than RC and Hills as they have no problem sending me this information.

    I can tell you're very young vet because the more I watch your videos because I'm actually interested in learning about very particular food brands the more I realize you're very contradictory to vets who have been veterinarians way longer than you I mean food rotation protein rotation is the best thing you can do for your animals when they eat one protein their entire life is actually when they develop allergies

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea День тому

      I’m glad you think I’m young, my credentials are listed in the description box. It’s actually basic veterinary immunology. I’ve gone over this several times in my videos and comments section. Food Allergies are IGE type 3 and 4 hypersensitivity reactions Wich means a food must be presented to the immune system in order to prime it for reaction. By rotating the diets you increase the chances of reaction. I’m sorry I’m contradictory to vet that have practiced longer than me, but this information has been around a long time and is also in the current literature. You may be falsely extrapolating from human medicine Wich is a common mistake j see even my peers make from time to time.

    Thank you for Feeline Fridays. Still considering finding a hypoallergenic Siberian Forest Cat (tested). If you ever get bored, a lot of ferrets are fed dry cat food as well because of their high metabolism. Ideally, ferrets should be fed whole prey (not raw grinds nor segmented raw chunks like chicken feet or turkey necks commonly advocated in North America). In Europe, people work full-time, so they provide kibbles during the working hours then feed whole preys (eg. rabbits, rats, mice, chicks) when they are home. So, Ferrety Fridays would also be a nice alternative to Feline Fridays. :)

      Also, 10-15 years ago, roach keepers used to high-protein dog food to their cockroach collection. But now they are finding that causes nutritional deficiencies, so they just feed chick starters instead (as in the livestock feed for raising baby chickens). I know, random, but I have ADHD.

    Hey I LOVE your nutritional videos and was really hoping you would be willing to do a more niche video for working dogs. I have found extremely inconsistent information about that and have working LGD’s and Dr Gary’s is one of the few that has a specific food for working dogs but I have no idea if it’s good or not since the comparisons aren’t there and as someone who has not attended veterinary school I have no idea what an appropriate baseline is. An additional issue is working dogs as puppies. These dogs are huge and athletic but don’t eat very much and are ‘grazers’ therefore the sheer volume of puppy food generally recommended is not realistic- no matter how much they like the food it’s hard enough to get 2 cups a day in while they’re growing. In an effort to help along the chore of adequately feeding them we have been giving the puppies (4 months and up) adult food as well. Can you please advise?

    Great video! Thank you so much for sharing! I have a question. Isn't the kibble heated up so high that all nutrients are lost and have to be added back in? Would that make the "meat" ingredient pointless to look at? Should we just primarily focus on the mineral content of the kibble? I sadly fell for this marketing ploy and was thinking I was doing good by making sure the meat was the first ingredient. The more I learn, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't focus on the "meat" ingredient at all.

At a very common sense level why would a company buy meet just to burn it up and add it back, it absolutely contributes to nutrition. They factor all aspects of the processing in when they make the diet and what the final nutrition profile will be. If you are interested more on that process then check out the first chapter in SACN good explication of extrusion and what happens to the nutrients in that process.

    When it says "chicken and oats recipe" does that mean it could be 1% chicken and 24% oats? Or 25% chicken and another 25% oats? Or does it just refer to meat protein? It is a kind of useless term, though, unless it is by dry matter volume.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea 6 днів тому

      According to AAFCO who sets the rules for labeling. It is any listed ingredient must comprise the 25% on a dry matter basis of all the ingredients. So yes, it would be both chicken and oat combined to make at least 25% but could be up to 70%

I guess they're ignorant to the fact, that the more they tap dance around your questions, the more they convince us not to buy their products. Keep it up and thank you for KEEPING US INFORMED. Hi, Doctor Rea!! Excellent video. If you don’t mind, I need a little advice with choosing between 2 foods for my 15 yr old pup. I am stuck between Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Small & Mini Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food and Royal Canin® Size Health Nutrition™ Small Aging 12+ Dry Dog Food. I asked for both of their nutritional info in a dry matter basis in exact percentages, no min or max, and the two are seemingly wonderful options. However, there are a few points I am concerned about. First, I love the way Hill’s guaranteed analysis in a dry matter basis, is readily available on their site for all of their products, and for that particular one, their Protein is at 21.5%, Calcium at 0.8%, Phosphorus at 0.69%, and Crude Fiber at 5%. According to the charts, Calcium should be at 0.75% max, so they are slightly over. Now the issue here lies in comparison to Royal Canin, in which, for their particular food, they informed me that the Protein content is at 27.17%, Calcium at 0.73%, and Phosphorus at 0.53%. They are a little over in Protein, but are amazing in the Mineral department. They also gave me two answers for Fiber that I am confused about-Crude Fiber at 1.63% but 7.85% total Dietary Fiber. Looking at the senior dog chart, it should be more than 2% Fiber, and my dog personally needs as much Fiber as she can get, or she has tummy/stool problems, and I don’t understand which answer is more applicable. I am unsure of what the better option would be considering all of these factors-I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this, Doctor Rea!!

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea 6 днів тому

      I think both excellent options. Remember you can always add fiber if needed if that’s a deal breaker. The numbers I give are ideal, not absolute so I think given how close both are, I’d consider secondary factors such as availability, price, and pet preference and tolerance

    Hi! One video I would love to see you speak on is the purpose and appropriation use of pet/dog supplements. Not prescription, but supplements; and what types are considered unnecessary such as daily multi vitamins, omega 3 fish oils etc. It seems the pet supplement industry has become all the rage… completely disregarding the nutritional balance of dog food. I would love to hear your take on this!

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea 6 днів тому

      I touch on this in many videos such as the Bullymax one, not a fan of supplements so that’s why I don’t really have any videos on them. Totally not necessary on most cases and often yes, unbalance a balanced diet. Not to mention they don’t take into account the inhibitory or compatibility with the main diet.

    I was reading that 4D meat is typically found in meat meal, if used, but it's rendered so it is safe for the animal. I'm curious as to what this means exactly. I know it's at least partially cooked to kill anything nasty. I guess I'm really curious if there is a huge difference health wise between a meat/ meat and bone meal based food vs the more clearly defined meat based food.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea 6 днів тому

      It would boil down to the minerals. High minerals indicated poor quality and low mineral in line with the standards indicates higher quality

    • @blissfuljoy6049
      @blissfuljoy6049 6 днів тому

      @@AnimalDocRea But the higher mineral s wouldn't cause problems unless there are other health issues that would be aggravated by this right? Because they have to stay under certain amounts anyway? I've been looking on Purina's research site and noticed they have a cat study showing how certain additives like prebiotics increase longevity in older cats. It doesn't mention dogs but I'm guessing it might have a similar effect. It doesn't say if their control is just cat chow or what it is but it had me wondering about additives vs sources of meat. Are the minerals in Dog and Cat chow that different from Purina One?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea 6 днів тому

      I mean you can use minerals to determine the quality of meat source. Low quality mean sources have high minerals because they have like bone and hooves. Foods with properly sourced minerals more than likely have cleaner meat sources. I’m responding to your question about how quality of protein source: actual mineral numbers from a nutritional analysis standpoint is different topic

    • @blissfuljoy6049
      @blissfuljoy6049 6 днів тому

      @@AnimalDocRea I get what you mean by meat and bone meal having probable higher mineral levels and this being less desirable. But at the end of the day, is it actually causing problems in most animals? Are dogs living longer on Iams, Hills, Purina One/pro plan vs Dog Chow or Pedigree? Purina and Mars market against their own brands in a way. I know some of the ingredient differences make coats shiner and whatnot, but how impactful are the different formulas longevity wise? If everything is in balance then what does it matter what the meat is? Actually, Purina would do itself a lot of good if they showed more factual data showing how long animals live on their products, considering how many "boutique" brands are out to trash them. I hope I'm making sense 😆. I've grown a disdain for fluff marketing in all areas of life at this point...lol.
