    Just finished watching most of the Pet Food Puzzle Guy's videos, and found your channel yesterday due to his referral. EYE-OPENING, is all I can say. Unfortunately, for most of our 12 year Coton's life, we were completely taken in by all the "boutique/designer" dog foods who touted the ingredient panel. It was only because of our recent switch(3 months ago) of her diet to Farmer's, that brought us to his and your channel. She had been on Freshpet for years and did perfectly fine. 4 vets later, we seemingly FINALLY got her terminal itching under control via a cyto-point injection. Her allergic reaction to the Farmer's was off the chain. We now have her on Hills ZD, hydrolyzed kibble. Never, will we buy another "designer" bag of kibble who touts the ingredient panel. Will keep you posted on how she does on the Hills ZD. Keep the GREAT info coming. Thank you.

      I've just acquired a 3yo chihuahua who has been fed supermarket own brand. I have been researching what to switch to. In the UK the only WSAVA - guideline brands are Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin. Iams has been sold to a European manufacturer. I bought Iams to start because I wanted a major brand that didn't use wolves or orthorexic human faddish ideas on the packaging. Then I was swayed by the price and, I admit, the cute dog on the bag. 😂 Now I know about WSAVA and Iams and I'm looking for a permanent brand once this bag is finished.
      This video is swaying me to RC. (I initially snubbed the brand because they had different foods for chihuahua, pomeranian, corgi, etc and I figured that was dumb so it prejudiced me against them, along with the price.)

    Thank you for your great videos! Like a lot of people, I've been watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of articles trying to find the best food for my dog. One topic, out of many, that I've come across that has conflicting information is on food rotation. Not just rotating your dog's protein, but also changing the brand of food. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  4 місяці тому +1

      Rotation is not advised as it causes GI indiscretion, encourages being a finicky eater, and can cause food allergy by exposing the immune system to multiple ingredients. So totally not necessary and potentially detrimental. My motto is set it and forget it.

    Thank you, Dr Rea. I am really enjoying this series. I am surprised the Royal Canin small dog dental kibble wasn't chosen, as dental issues are such an issue for small dogs. Maybe it's because other dogs are like mine, and refuse to eat it. lol

    Not sure if I updated on our 12 year old with the food allergic reaction. After about 3-4 weeks, the z/d did NOT seem to help. But she may gotten mites, so vet put her on 4 oral doses of ivermectin (once a week), & we switched her to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin/Stomach Salmon(vet said his other client had good results with that). Our little girl is back to normal self(minus ear hair she had furiously scratched off over the weeks). And we continue the Pro Plan. Was it the ivermectin/ridding of the possible mites or was it the Pro Plan or both? We plan on doing the Pro Plan a few more weeks, & then slowly reintroduce the z/d(which has chicken liver in it BTW) & she IS allergic to chicken. We just want to know what set her off to begin with, wuich we beloeve was the Farmer's Dog food we tried back in January, but we WON'T be reintroducing that product.

    We just started our ten year old min pin on the Royal Canin Hydrolized protein small breed dry food because I suspect her allergies are food related. Is that a good choice? I wanted the Hill's, but they didn't have any in stock at the Vet. Just wondering if RC is a good choice for the Hydrolized food to feed her.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 місяці тому

      It would depend on the diagnosis that was made and how your vet is working through it. I don’t like to mix an atopy work up with a food allergy work up but if you already ruled out atopy, then yes, I do my food trials with a hydrolized diet.

    May not be specific to this particular food... What I really want to understand is the carbohydrates % in dog food and its long term effects. There is no specific spec or info on carbo level and we know majority percent of food is carbo in dry food, and is likely much higher than protein or fat. And if protein is lower the carbo would be even higher. Understand the load too much protein puts on kidney but please also explain too much carbo effect on pancreas which produces insulin and consequently potential risk of diabetes (Also understand higher fat is also not good for pancreas). So higer protein vs higher carbo... Which is safer?

      There is a whole chapter on carbs in dogs in the textbook link in the description box Wich may help answer this question.

    DocRea. I sure hope you see this soon. I have two miniature schnauzers. I started them out on Purina Pro Plan chicken and rice. The one was biting his feet so I was assuming he had allergies to the chicken. So I switched to Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach. They didn’t seem to be a big fan of it. So again I switched to Wholesome beef. This video wants me to switch to Royal Canin. I’m so confused on what to do… I’ve been watching videos after videos on dry kibble. Some are saying that Royal Canin is not a good brand. I’m not saying I don’t believe you by all means. I love your videos. Please lead me in the right direction. The reason I wanted to switch from the wholesome is because the one is getting chunky and the other one is not really eating it. ( 6yr old and an 3 year old)Ugh l! I watched videos on spot & tango,open farm, Ollie, Carna4, the honest kitchen,natures logic,wellness,. Now I’m really confused! I keep bunching back and forth and I want to pick one and be done. Please give me what you think would be the best for my dogs. Why is this so hard? TIA

    • @AnimalDocRea

      I think that since you have pets with medical issues ( obesity and puritis) the best thing to do is to have a visit with your vet. Stop stressing and let them help guide you more efficiently to the right answer. Aimlessly changing foods cause a more damage than good and a more directed approach is probably best at this point.
