I love your videos! Picking a dog food is very challenging. I have spent about 2 weeks trying to find one for my pups and cat. These have been very helpful !
Tried this food with my Cavalier puppy after trying others and she did the best on this one. 100% recommend!
Awesome video! Can you do a review of the Kirkland Maintenance Cat dry food?
Yes I can
Thank you Dr. for your reviews. There are so many different dog foods out there. It makes you crazy in the head trying to pick the best inexpensive dog food. Thanks for your help.❤
My pleasure
Thank you for this video! I’m currently transitioning my puppy to Hills from Open Farm puppy (which only gets five points!). He seems to like it so far!
Good luck!!
Fun fact its extremely hard to exceed nutritional requirements when all nutrients are raw.
But it’s extremely easy to be deficient if not balanced by a boarded nutritionist. That’s why I recommend any pet receiving raw do so under the direct supervision of a boarded nutritionist who is aquatinted with their pet personally. But this video is not about raw.
I would be interested in a review on Dr Harvey's base mixes thanks
I can’t review those because they are not complete balanced diets. I generally don’t recommend these things because there is no way to ensure an accurate nutrition profile and can result in severely deficient or excessive nutrients both being detrimental to pet health. For those wanting a proper home cooked diet, I recommend consultation with a board certified veterinary nutritionist (ACVN.org)
Thanks that's what I thought
Can u do a review on Diamond Naturals large breed lamb or chicken dry food?
Dr. Can you please review Old Guard All American Dog food? The creator and owner has a PHD in Animal Nutrition.
We have been playing phone tag but I will be having a phone conversation with her soon and then hopefully a video
Can you please do a review on hydrolyzed diet- science diet? Can you also discuss why the ingredient lists are more grain/corn ? Is this healthy for my pet? Also can you look at the hills limited ingredient diet and why those recipes don’t have grains. I know grain free is bad, so why don’t these have grain. Love your videos!! Thanks!!! :)
I’ve got videos on grains as well as hydrolized diets: Purina One Sensitive skin and stomach Dog food Review vs Hills Prescription Z/D
ua-cam.com/video/4VEL6ILFofY/v-deo.html
Would you make a video on the whole Purina issue going on right now?
I will when there is actual evidence something is going on and what that something is. Right now it looks like it’s a lot of fear mongering and I’m not one to participate in that (although I do see a lot of other “nutrition” channels using it to get views). Personally I have 2k patients and obviously not all of them eat purina but a good portion do ( including my own pet) and I haven’t seen a single illness related to the diet so I can’t even comment on personal experience. I know that if pets are getting sick from a product there is an adverse event line veterinarians report to so when and if real illness occur, there will be a report and action will be taken, and veterinarians will be the first to know. Until then, I don’t feel like it’s my place to add to panic.
@@AnimalDocRea Okay. Thanks!
I feed my 6 1/2 year old cat Hills Indoor ages 1-6 and Tiki Cat kibble and Blue Tasteful canned. I give her Greenies treats (only 2), Emerald Pet, and Fromm treats. Your thoughts.
You are awesome! Love your videos.
I’m not familiar with tiki cat I’ll have to look into that one
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I ABSOLUTELY NEED TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON RX DIETS! recently, my cat underwent a blockage and full PUI surgery. He is now on hills c/d wet pate and has been doing good for the last month hes been on... BUT I LEARNED THAT THERE ARE NO ACTUAL MEDICINES IN THE FOOD! is this true? Can you tell me what meds are in the food and if so, what they actually do? And, if there truly are ZERO ACTUAL MEDICATIONS IN RX FOOD, WHY??? HOW DOES IT HELP??
Thank you!!!!! Love learning from all sides and perspectives. I just took a full week, at least 5 hours a day, to study raw food and others. Plus brands. Now its time to research the kibbles and whatnot!
The food is formulated in a way using nutrients to make it dissolve and prevent stone formation. I can speak from experience c/d works. Had it dissolve bladder stones within 1 month just last week. I suggest you watch this video by glen, he knows more about the science behind it, I just know it works. ua-cam.com/video/k1uU0zZZxoo/v-deo.htmlsi=qe-Jfqw8iLICu9VO. Blockage can be life threatening and I don’t play around with novel and unsubstantiated claims on this one.
Hi AnimalDocRea, can you review Kindfull dog food
could you do spot and tango unkibble!
Can you do nature's logic distinction line? I saw your video in past mention calcium... This one has 4.95% calcium?!
Also any thoughts on the Purina food scares?
And the group that is reporting on it and is very very anti kibble and recommend raw and things like carna4 lol
That calcium cannot be in a DMB, you likley need to convert. That would way exceed even AAFCO
At present that is exactly what it is, a scare with no actual evidence so at present there is nothing to report, but if that changes I will let you all know
@@AnimalDocRea just looked at the website
Says for beef distinction:
ACTUAL ANALYSIS UNITS DRY MATTER BASIS:
Calcium = 4.95%
Phosphorus = 2.71%
Chicken:
Calcium = 2.27%
Phosphorus = 1.46%
Pork:
Calcium = 3.52%
Phosphorus = 1.96%
Sardine:
Calcium = 2.45%
Phosphorus = 1.58%
yeah, those levels make me uncomfortable but check with your veterinarian IRL :) to see if they have a different take
Can you please review “We Feed Raw” dog food. It was supposedly created by another PHD in Animal Nutrition. They ship to you.
ill certainly take a look
Can you please do a review on a new science diet product. Adult Sensitive skin and stomach pollock meal and insect recipe.
I haven’t heard of that one but I did this review: Jiminy's Dog Food Review: A New and Innovative Option for Pet Parents
ua-cam.com/video/bDF_RGPViJw/v-deo.html
I did see that video and science diet is making the Sensitive skin and stomach pollock meal and insect adult food.
@@AnimalDocRea Meal, fly larvae, corn, corn starch. You are killing me, Doc! LOL
I thought about science diet but they have a rocky history and they’ve been added to the list of foods at the moment that may be contaminated
Science diet it not currently involved in any recalls.
Hello Dr. Rea,
Thank you for all your videos! I really enjoy them and they’re so informative.
A quick question if I may? I cannot find the video where you said this? So please forgive me as I know it’s somewhere on your channel. What are the target dry matter percentages for calcium and phosphorus for senior cats? My Bengal Mika is 10 years old and I just want to make sure I’m giving her the right amounts for her wet food diet only. She’s on Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Barley & Whole Oats Recipe Cat Food for her dry food diet, which I already believe is in the target range as it’s an age specific formula.
Thank you in advance for your time and have a wonderful day! 😊
I think I go over senior in this video;You definitely want to know the difference between these Royal Canin Cat foods
ua-cam.com/video/zkqkg8JRqoI/v-deo.html
@@AnimalDocRea Thank you so much. 😊
How about the large breed puppy food?
I’ll be reviewing the best large breed puppy in the next few weeks
@@AnimalDocRea great! I’ll be following! Love your help!
Doesn't this food contain peas which was one of the suggested causes of DCM?
It’s not the presence of peas, but the quantity used in grain free diets to compensate for the loss of grain.
@@AnimalDocRea Thank you for clearing that up.
The reason I ask is that in the post FDA statement study below they highlight peas specifically. Have you looked at this study before by any chance?
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10212094/
I keep seeing mixed reviews on Hills and alot of ppl saying its bad...
I suppose you have to decide for yourself. I just go by the numbers and the numbers look great.
Jus switchdd my cane to Hills. Now she has the runs. What that mean??
Please refer all medical questions to your personal veterinarian, it may be the food does not agree, insufficient transition period, or it could be a number of other conditions that results in loose stool
My puppy (Saint Bernard pit bull cross) was dealing with the same. It was the only food he was given at the shelter and I continued it when I brought him home. He has really loose stools, straining and gas. I ended up changing his food and starting a bland diet for a couple days (cooked white fish, pumpkin and squash puréed, added bone broth and a slippery elm supplement). His GI tract settled down and have slowly added in The Honest Kitchen dehydrated, Smack dehydrated and some raw. Things seem good 🤞 I hope you find something that works for your pup and brings them some relief.
It’s my personal opinion corn, and soy are nasty fillers put in dog food. I think one of those ingredients were causing the issue with my guy.
Hey I love your channel and everything you do, but I am so confused on this review. I do understand that you more focus on the minerals and proteins and fats percentages. But shouldn’t we be looking at what ingredients are in the food also. You gave this food a perfect score when in the ingredients it has whole grain wheat, whole grain corn, soybean meal. Just says fish oil , not what kind of fish. You have given other dog foods that have such a better quality of ingredients low scores just because the protein was a little bit high. Don’t know about this one.
I’m in the nutrients first camp. To me, even if it’s fillet minion, if the nutrients are all out of wack, it doesn’t matter. And remember these numbers are percentages so a little off is actually a lot off. This is the concept I use in all my reviews. I encourage you to look for a food that has appropriate nutrients and then the best ingredients that can actually fit that profile. I’d love a food that is 10 on nutrition and also be the ingredients everyone will be happy with, but I haven’t found it yet. You find it, I’ll review it for sure!
Ingredients can be manipulated.
@@AnimalDocReaas a nutritionist, shouldn't your focus still be on overall health? Also you never mention when these companies get there percentages wrong. I've been asking you to include that in your reviews. But you never do. The vitamins % are often times inaccurate in some of these commercial brands. They've been recalled because they have miscalculated the victims. We should make clear that any brand that has lied/miscalculated there vitamins are no longer considered good foods. They literally have zero accountability either that's messed up.
@sincere355 And oh how they are!
@bigVmoves this chanel is an educational channel targeted at helping people understand how to read pet food labels, what to look for on packages, and know how to construct a healthy and meaningful conversation with thier personal vet. It is meant to be simple and light hearted. I reserve more in depth conversations about the totality of a patients health to their personal vet who can then go into these finer details with them. So, yes I do focus on the totality of my patients health, but that is done in the context of a physical exam and at an office visit. But yes, all valid points.
Can I feed a German shorthair pointer this
I’d say do the large breed puppy version
Doc, I love the statement companies give you what you want, not what you need! That’s so good….and true!
It's really quite disappointing that people can even call themselves "dog nutritionists" after taking a short course. Ultimately, it's the dogs and cats that then suffer from this. I feed my young pug the Science Diet Small Paws, along with a bit of Science Diet canned mixed in (he is extremely picky and not much into food which is apparently a rare thing for pugs). He is doing great on this brand, so healthy. People often comment to me how healthy he looks, and his weight is perfect too.
That’s great
Are you kidding me???? Dogs are meant to eat MEAT. Some of these are like 50% carbohydrates. How can you recommend this?!?!?!?!?!? What a joke
Dogs are meant to eat an appropriate proportion of meat, not simply “meat”. Data is presented in the text linked in the description box below to substantiate the ranges I suggest for optimal nutrition. It’s not a joke at all, it’s data driven nutrition science.
I’ve had several vets push this brand of dog food on me before but everyone I’ve seen use the science brand has had trouble with there dogs either hair failing out or them getting sick and plus they have had multiple recalls in the past
Thanks for sharing your personal experience, feel free to check out my playlist of puppy foods for some other good options
