Hey! Thanks for the shout out! I’ve had folks ask about Kirkland so I’ll be sharing this! It’s funny how often U get a thank you or a compliment and they include Dr. Rea! And they’re so right!
Thanks Dr. Rae! Would love to see a video on “affordable dog foods” that are on point with the nutrients & percentages.
I think that mature adult at under $2 a pound might be a good option. I think if you use the PSS is may score a 8-9
Yes, life stage is very important- Especially when I'm dealing with a 16 year old pup.
Yay new video! Thank you Dr Rea! This is a really good one because a lot of people I know feed Kirkland.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your review- Can you please review Kirkland Signature Small Breed Dog Food Loafs
Came here to ask the same thing, please.
Love your channel! ❤
Thank you so much!!
Very interesting and well detailed analysis Dr Rea! You sure put in a lot of work to do this Kirkland chart! Would you be interested in doing the same for their cat food??? Just a suggestion! Thanks again for taking the time to do this for us! 😻🐶🐾
I’ve got the cat one all ready to film so hopefully in the next week or two
Trying our best to decipher all the info…..thinking of doing a mix with Ollie lamb and rice with Kirkland lamb and rice…..thank you for what you’re doing
You are welcome, I’m glad it is helping
Subscribed. Great Info. We use Farmers Dog but supplement with a cup of Kirkland Super Premium Puppy per day (5 month old SIberian Husky).
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for another great one. Although we now have our 12 year old on a "therapeutic food", we had at one time seriously considered the Kirkland kibble. Speaking of "therapeutic", will you ever do a review on the "big 3's" therapeutic dog food? We're on the Hill's z/d kibble/canned, but not sure how that stuff shakes out as far as meeting what it should meet, nutrient-wise. Thank you.
I’ve had a lot of requests for z/d so I suppose I should
Thanks for another informative video. My dog has allergies and I’ve switched him to Science Diet Lamb and Brown Rice which he’s doing great on. The calcium is 1.09% but his previous food it was 2.00% so even though the Science Diet is a little higher than optimal I figured it was a better choice. Would love a review for the Science Diet Lamb and Brown Rice, thanks!
What a great way to reason through it, very proud of your thought process.
Just found your channel and Great video! We just got an 8 week old Great Dane and he's a monster, 31lbs but so sweet. I am having a hard time landing on a cost effective kibble with good nutrition, and C - P. Do you have any videos that can help with my decision? Thanks! OH I'm in CANADA if that helps.
Try a large breed puppy for sure, maybe some in this playlist that can help and if not, just find one in the standards I mention: All Puppy Food reviews
ua-cam.com/play/PLpfecaMYsipLoBnSc0YJjNNMS-4wGkhxK.html
Thank You! I have also read that Danes can be switched onto adult food very early, like after a few months old or even right away. I am liking the Purina Pro Plan Adult Large Breed Shredded Chicken and Rice and it looks like the nutrition fits in your chart you like to see, would you agree?.@@AnimalDocRea
Awesome video!! Can't wait to watch the video for cat foods
Coming soon!
Thank you for the video, would you recommend the Mature for a dog that has had a history of crystals? Doesn't look the Adult Lamb would be? He is a senior dog.
I’d have to defer to the vet that is managing your pets crystaluria, normally that would require a prescription diet
@@AnimalDocRea he no longer has crystals he came up clear. I believe he developed crystals from Pedigree dry dog food.
@JessicaPayne-on3ww there’s a lot that goes into managing crystals depending on the type and reason why they formed so not really something you can manage on your own, you needs guidance from the vet that diagnosed it so they know what types and why the crystals form.
@@AnimalDocRea I understand and thank you for your reply. He no longer has them. He was recently diagnosed with DM, and since he no longer has crystals, we are going to do a more natural approach with kibble. Just trying to find the best with good minerals. We have our other girl who is on the Adult Lamb and has a clean bill of health.
Could you review Health Extension Original Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe. I've been recommended this food by a few people and was wondering if it would be a good food to feed.
Thank you-very informative. My 3 year old lab this past year put on about 10 lbs…yikes. I like the mature I may have to look at that. My real question I need to add more moisture for her as she tends to get constipated. I’ve been mixing in canned food which I am sure is adding lots of calories. What are some good low calorie ways to add more moisture? Thank you
Canned food is ok, you just need to subtract calories from the dry. People don’t realize that canned food isn’t more fat or calories, it’s more water! I have a whole video on can vs Dry you may want to see. But otherwise you can add water to the food, look for a food with higher fiber, or get a pet fountain
Thank you, I will watch that video
I was curious where the Large Breed Puppy nutritional requirements table came from? I can't find matching data in the AAFCO profiles, but I also don't even know where all to look.
The numbers aren’t AAFCO, they are from the text small animal clinical nutrition. A full text link is in the description box and reference the chapters for growing dogs and development orthopedic diseases.
I have two golden retrievers, Male (7) and Female (3) - since the Mature dog food seems the best overall is it okay to give to both dogs? I’ve read at age 8 they’re considered senior…so would I want to find a different food for my male or would this food still work and maybe just cut back on how much I’m feeding him?
It was a little off of the parameters if fed for a senior but overall a good food
My mini goldendoodle her parents are 25/30lbs, she's 8 weeks and currently 6lbs, breeder guesstimates her adult weight at 30-35lbs. She's currently on purina one large breed puppy because that's what the breeder was currently feeding her. I would like to switch to a Kirkland puppy blend.
I have a few questions
What benefit or impact would it be if I kept her on this food for a large breed because so far she loves it.
If I were to switch your food, how gradual of a change would you recommend?
I would not feed her large breed. She needs a different fat and mineral profile. Finish the bag you are on then transition over two weeks. That’s why I would do.
Can you do Kirkland natures domain turkey and ancient grain
Very helpful. We're having real trouble finding food for a 9-year-old Golden because based on the numbers, most foods that are labeled being for adult or senior dogs appear to be way too high on fat and protein.
Would love to see a comparison on these "senior" foods
Hill's Science Diet Perfect Digestion Adult Senior 7+ Dry Dog Food - Chicken & Brown Rice
and
Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Large Breed Senior Dry Dog Food - Natural, Chicken
I been seen alot of supplements for our pets im confused which one to get or what not to get, can you do reviews couple supplements that in general stores shelves
I’ve gone over supplements in the Bullymax video. In short, No need to supplement if your pet is not diagnosed with a deficiency or your food is deficient in which case I’d say don’t feed that food. OTC supplements for the most part are a scam
Have you reviewed the blue diamond dog food?
Thank you
That was one of my first ever videos. Battle of the Blues: Blue Buffalo Vs Diamond pet food
ua-cam.com/video/g2KaXihDlfc/v-deo.html
@AnimalDocRea I found it
Thank you
Which one would you recommend
Blue vs taste of the wild vs whole heated
I think the blue and the wholehearted scored similarly and the taste of the wild lower. I don’t remember specifically.
@@AnimalDocRea thank you so much for the reply. Love your videos
Can you review inception dog food?
Thank you! I will watch once someone time-stamps the products. :)
If you want to do a similar format video, in Canada our "budget" dog-food line for the franchise Pet Valu is Performatrin ($60 for 'premium'). They're about half the price of Purina, Royal Canin and Hill's Science Diet. ($80-$90 a bag).
Not a request, just letting you know that's probably the most popular brand we have beside Costco's Kirkland for price-conscious shoppers.
Glenn might want to take a look as well since the 'minimums' for Ca/P in their senior products are a lot lower compared to other popular boutique brands.
Don't know what's the best way to tag him or if I should just email him about it.
Yes I’ll time stamp it, I have to wait until it’s published to run the time stamp generator and I have t had time since the video went live
Email probably
@@AnimalDocRea Emailed since I know senior pet products is his passion.
@@AnimalDocRea Ah, you don't have to, I am used to waiting for video essayists' superfans to put time-stamps in the comment section.
When choosing a dog food for a small dog do you reccommend using age or size i have 9 yr old Ratcha that qeighs 10 pounds
Age, breed only matters with large breed puppies. Everything that is the same
@@AnimalDocRea at what age would you consider a Ratcha dog to be a senior because mine is 9
@Sheilaparsley69 any breed over 7 years
Happy Purrsday! Nice earrings.
Thank you! 😊
What are the parameters for large breed adult?
As mentioned in the video, there is no parameter for large breed adult or small breed. It’s the same as the adult as all growth has stopped. Large breed adult is just marketing mumbo jumbo.
Need a video review for best food for large breed puppies (Rottweiler) specifically!
I have a few in the puppy playlist
I look forward to you reviewing all the nature's logic 😂 (cause the calcium levels)
*Rotisserie chicken offer still valid*
Also only channel I will watch with ads 😊
So I did the research on a single natures logic, not all of them because they don’t have a nice chart like Kirkland but maybe for that chicken I’ll dig a little deeper
@@AnimalDocRea they have regular nature's logic then nature's logic distinction which is more expensive
Listen, this chart is getting huge…and you are right, the calcium is clogging my kidneys just researching this
@@AnimalDocRea omg 🤣
Glenn & Dr. Rea are singlehandedly bringing pet parents the real truths about dog food. Thank you!
Nutrients don’t lie!
@RipJewels we are not, but what we are sharing the same information from boarded nutritionists that is in line with AVMA, ACVN, and WASAVA. It’s actually the recommended information that is established for safe and optimal nutrition by boarded nutritionists. Links to these organizations are in the description box as well as full text link to the SACN with all the necessary references.
I want to see reviews on next level it's the original owners of Victor
I hear a lot that cats shouldn't eat too much fish. Is this true?
Yes. It’s referring to people that feed things like only canned tuna. It’s deficient in taurine.
In that case are other types of fish okay? Or should they all be avoided as much as possible@@AnimalDocRea
its only fish that are a sole source of the diet if it is raw or home formulated, any commercial diets will have taurine added back to it.
Can I give my 14 week old frenchie the salmon?

Dang…, Your so Beautiful..😍😍👍👍
I talked to my dog about the Costco dog food, she stated it was boring. I went back to Nutrisource at twice the price. Not ver happy with the dog right now, no allowance for a month
I farted
So pretty 😍
I used to give my Rotty Victor Professional as a pup for 2 years until the last recall. I then found out about Hollywood Feed and they recommended Fromm and Nutrisource. I got the Nutrisource until recently finding this channel and saw that it had elevated levels of calcium and phosphorus. Here I thought I was giving my lil buddy a decent kibble but come to find out, kibble isn’t that great… I’m so confused 😕. After seeing this video, I decided to give him Kirkland Mature. My thought process is why pay a premium on kibble if kibble is already crap anyway. I’m gonna use this as a base and just add some steak and salmon and fruits and veggies every now and again until I can financially transition him over to a raw diet. 🫤
I’d consider a consultation with a boarded vet nutritionist at acvim.org. Addding meat will unbalance the diet and feeding. Raw opens your pet up to pathogens. A boarded nutritionist can help you formulate a home cooked diet that is appropriate if that’s what you desire. Simply adding meat and veggies is not the solution.
Thanks Dr. I appreciate the response. But here in lies my dilemma. Allow me to rant…Not to say all of this information isn’t great and useful, I just find certain things questionable. Like how is it that my grandparents dogs and dogs I grew up with, from Mastiffs, Dobermans, German shepherds were raised on Alpo and then as I got older, we started giving them iams Eucanuba because it was supposedly better and these dogs lived damn near forever with no health issues until they were in their 20’s. There was no such thing as allergies or proper ratios because we not only gave them their regular food but also table scraps. They didn’t have worms or any of the sort. Nowadays with all this information it seems like your dog can possibly die if it doesn’t eat the necessary scientifically proportioned nutrient dense foods. I know no scenarios are the same but I don’t think with today’s technology in food and me no longer giving my dogs pizza, chips and chicken bones, that giving them better alternatives is going to harm them..or can it. My dogs never went to the vet, hardly had vaccines. All of them had flea collars..which I don’t do now and none of the had any ailments. I’m older now and when you know better you do better so it just gets frustrating because my mom’s jack russell has a chicken allergy 🫤 which I hear is very common, but almost laughable. But he’s on Zignature lamb and kangaroo and his stools are still somewhat loose and he has borderline high cholesterol. My 3 yr old Rotty Doberman mix has an iron gut and eats banisters, dry wall and just about everything else not nailed down and has an iron gut and never has diarrhea. I take him to the vet and everyone marvels at his coat, his teeth and all his labs are great. I’m still trying to figure this all out. I just want a simple what’s good, what’s not approach and hopefully my dog can live til 25 like Hannibal my Bull Mastiff, Great Dane mix. Sheesh 🤭
