SALTWATER FISHING ST. AUGUSTINE - Kayak Fishing (Redfish)
Переглядів 8025 місяців тому
My original plans were to take the Carolina Skiff out to the jetties today, but as luck would have it the starter battery was dead. My fishing time is always very limited and I wanted to fish, so I called an audible, backed the boat back in the garage, loaded up the kayak and off to Pelicer Creek I went.

Returning from a day offshore fishing and trying to beat a storm to the boat ramp, St Augustine Inlet was a bit sporty. This afforded a great opportunity to give you guys this short 5 min video showing my little Carolina Skiff 162 JLS in some sporty conditions for a boat this size. I turn the camera on myself at the end of the video so you can see if I stayed dry.

We rode for hours. He was smiling and laughing all day. He says next time he wants to try and fish. We had a blast. I can't begin to tell anyone how much happiness this day brought me.

    That’s a great looking boat. I’m new to boating and I’ve been looking to get either a gheenoe or a CS as my first boat. I’ve been looking at used boats and I would probably buy a new Suzuki motor for it because I hear hands down they are probably the best way to go. What are your thoughts on getting my first boat.

    • @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 19 днів тому

      I have been very happy with my Carolina Skiff. I have also been very impressed by the 90 hp Suzuki. It sips fuel. I can cruise at 27 mph in fair conditions and get 7+ mpg. Obviously less favorable conditions and faster speed can affect that number but overall even on bad days I can avg 5gph. A gheenoe would be a good choice as well. Especially in real skinny water. It really depends on what you want to do with the boat. I feel like the Carolina Skiff will be a more versatile boat. I have had it in 6" of water and 20 miles offshore. I hope I was able to help a little. Tight lines 🎣

    • @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Місяць тому

      I prefer to be able to adjust my trim. It allows me to adjust for sea conditions and weight distribution. I also use my tabs to lean the hull away from a strong quartering or crosswind as it helps reduce the amount of wind spray into the boat.

      Castaway Customs in St. Augustine installed the Seadek on my boat. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 2K. That included coming to my house to measure the boat and install it. Up until then, my 162 JLS was their first. I would assume you can get it for less as they now have the measurements on file. Here is a link of the before and after I had the Seadek installed. A 19' JLS should fit a family of four with two small children just fine. I have owned 3 Mini Kotas and 3 Motorguides. My last one was a Motorguide. I will never buy a Mini Kota. I owned one of the first Motorguides made. It had a foot pedal, with an electric wire running to a pully in the head of the motor. When you pushed the toe down, it would turn one way and heel down it went the other way. It was tough and took a lot of punishment.

    Carolina skiff's get a bad rap for rough/choppy performance in my opinion. It may be a little more Bumpy than a 22° dead rise boat But I have always felt safe and confident in their boats!! I'm looking at 24 and 26 foot ultra elites as we speak I'm a hoping to seal the deal on one in the next couple of months.

    • @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 4 місяці тому

      I agree. Also, that 22° deadrise is nice when it's rough and you're underway but will rock horribly at anchor. All boats are a compromise. No boat is perfect in all conditions or applications. I feel like Carolina Skiff does a fair job of making a very versatile boat. I love mine. Do I wish it could make it to the ledge? Sure, but it does everything else so well and very affordable so that trip to the lege will just have to be a charter..lol. Good luck with your new boat ... Tight lines 🤙 🎣

After the exit turn left on US 1 and take the first right (between the convenience stores). Follow that road to Faver Dykes State Park. The speed limit on the road leading to the park is 25 mph. The only issue I have ever had was using a #5 planner at 8 knots. That overloaded it. With smaller planners and normal trolling of any kind, they work great. @@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishingI have a 2022 Wellcraft 162 man I'm telling you guys think you have to have a big boat but the smaller boats are just as good and better on gas😂

      I absolutely agree. The only thing my boat can't do is take me out far enough for Wahoo, Tuna and Mahi. I like to charter a trip or two a year to reach out and catch those. That is a lot cheaper than paying the big boat payment and fuel. I love to kingfish and my boat is perfect for that and I can go all day for less than $20 😁

      @@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing - Agreed. I would rather have a small boat with low costs and more days on the water than a big boat with big gas bills. I can catch bigger fish inshore than a lot of offshore guys catch and spend 1/10th of what they do on gas, bait, and time. Well played sir and well said. 😏

      Hi, Curaco, is that Venezuela? I am not familiar with the preferred equipment and baits for that area. In my area, North Florida, natural baits such as ballyhoo using a conventional trolling speed, approximately 6 - 8 knots, or high-speed trolling at 15 - 18 knots pulling artificial lures is the go to for Wahoo. High-speed would not be an option with the boat you described. The conventional troll would work for Bonito as well. Snapper, on the other hand, are usually targeted bottom fishing with natural bait local to your waters. As far as a bottom machine goes, Lowrance, Simrad, Garmin, and Furuno are all quality equipment. Personal preference on options, local availability, and price on models available in your area would probably determine which one is right for you. Most expensive is not always better. I hope this helps some, Tight lines 🤙 🎣

    Would you ever consider taking a local out fishing for maybe just like a few hours? I don't have a lot of money, but I'd be willing to work something out. I don't think the fuel is that cheap. Maybe I could foot that bill or something. Just a question I have for a few of the local fisherman that have channels out. I'm even friends with a few of them on Facebook. Like I said before brother, thanks for putting out these videos, and God be with you on your endeavors!

      Hello, and yes, I have been thinking about doing something along those lines. I have had several other people contact me and express an interest in fishing with me. I would love to. I am looking into the details of how I should go about it with it being associated with my channel. I will hopefully have the details ironed out soon and let you guys know. I think it would be a lot of fun.

    Thanks for finally putting another video out. I really appreciate that! I just wanted to say about your fight with the big King. Was that thing in China? That had to be like the longest flight I've ever seen in a long time on a fishing video! Well worth it though I would assume. Keep the videos coming! God bless. 🎣🐟😊

    Very good review. The price difference is about $700 or more if you get a MK vs MG. But everyone says the MG goes whacky. Pretty much every review says that. So I guess I’m going to spend more and get MK. Yes, the intro way too long. You’ve probably corrected that by now with later videos

    This is your latest video I believe. That being said, I was just wondering if you hung the Go-Pro up, or are you just taking a break? I really enjoyed your content, and since I'm (fairly) new to the area, you've also helped me out with some decent fishing locales. I for one hope you didn't give up HAPPY NEW YEAR!
