  • First day this season the weather allowed me to go offshore. No luck finding pogies so I just tied on some artificals and went fishing. Scored the first King of the season.

Sweet, congrats on that first king 👍

Thanks! Couldn't find bait anywhere. He was no monster but getting him on artificial was fun and was the first king on the new boat. He went straight home to the smoker.

Would like to see what rig you were trolling for that Kingfish, how far back off the boat, depth, trolling speed, etc. Thanks

      Hi rjbtoo,
I was trolling a 4" Rapala X-Rap in Olive Green. Trolling at 5.5 - 6 mph. The bait has a max diving depth of 6'. I was in approximately 60' of water. This was my "shotgun" bait out approximately 100'.
I hope you find this helpful. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Who did the decking on your skiff. They should already have the dimensions on file and I would be able to buy from them without taking measurements.

      Hi Clinton,
Castaway Customs measured and installed my decking. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Here is a link to a before and after video if you want to see it. Feel free to follow up with any other questions.

Would a Gheenoe be a good choice for flounder fishing?

A Gheenoe is a great choice for Flounder fishing. You can access a lot of skinny water other boats can't get to.

I’m looking at buying this boat, how does it handle chop offshore. I’m mostly going to be using it for inshore and backcountry fishing, but I am curious. What’s the max conditions you would go offshore with?

      Hi Eric,
Here is the latest video of the 162 JLS after 6 months of ownership. There are some pretty good examples of my operating the boat in several different conditions.
      ua-cam.com/video/qbhOCuzaG4M/v-deo.html
"Max" conditions will vary with the Captain's experience and comfort level given the conditions. My personal rough guidelines are 2-3 if the interval is less than 6 secs.
7 secs or more I will go out in say 3-5 because those will more than likely just be big rollers.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of more help.

@@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thank you for the reply. I watched the 6 month video and it looked great. I fall into the same category as you with living in an HOA and needing something that fits in my garage which is what led me to your channel looking up this boat.
It turns out I’m looking at purchasing it from Waylen as well, even though I live in South Florida. I’m glad you had a great experience with them. So far they have been really helpful to me too. I’m just about completely sold on pulling the trigger thanks to your videos. I would never have thought I’d be able to check off all the boxes in what I am looking for, but based on your reviews and experience with the boat it looks like this does just that. Like I said, going offshore isn’t how I would mostly use it, but knowing I can and staying dry really appeals to me. I need something that can go skinny first and foremost, but the other boats I have been looking at are going to get chewed with spray in choppy water.
So I guess my question is the opposite of the first one now, does the advertised draft seem to be accurate? How shallow have you comfortably taken it? Installing a jack plate might be something I do to it in the future if I needed to. Anyways, thank you for the response and the solid videos.

@@NorthFloridaSaltwaterFishing not sure if you saw my last comment. I have the boat on order from waylen bay marine. It’s expected to be done on the 12th of august. I have a couple other questions for you. What’s the best place to reach you at? Thank you!

      @@yoepix Hi Eric,
I apologize. I didn't catch your follow-up question until just now. Yes I am able to get into less than a foot of water. What you do need to be careful of is although it jumps on plane very quick, it will squat on you if you hammer the throttle in shallow water without a jack plate or trim tabs. I would run slow until you get in 2 or 3 feet of water so you don't bump bottom before it pops up on plane. If you are already on plane, no worries. A jack plate may be a good addition. I didn't want the extra weight on top of the 90 hp Suzuki hanging back there. I do have trim tabs and they help alot with that as well.

      Hi Tommy,
I appreciate the offer. I am not a certified Captain. I am exploring the possibility of taking subscribers fishing, however I have yet to work out all the details involved in doing that. I will flag your post and follow up when I get everything sorted out.
