Can GOOD NBA players be BAD?
#nba
In the NBA, certain players become the subject of intense debate due to their performances and impact on the game. Players like Rudy Gobert, Domantas Sabonis, Isaac Okoro, and Trae Young showcase how their specific strengths and weaknesses shape the perceptions of fans and analysts. While these players excel in some aspects of basketball, their limitations in other areas often lead to discussions about their overall effectiveness.
Rudy Gobert is a prime example of a player whose exceptional defensive skills have earned him significant recognition in the league. A four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Gobert is known for his ability to protect the rim, dominate the boards, and alter opponents' shots. Statistically, Gobert's achievements are impressive-leading the league in blocks and rebounds, while also holding one of the best career true shooting percentages. His presence on the court is often felt, particularly when facing traditional big men like Joel Embiid or Nikola Jokic. However, Gobert's effectiveness diminishes when matched against smaller, faster opponents, as seen in international play, where his coach opted to bench him in certain matchups.
Despite his defensive prowess, Gobert's limitations become apparent in situations where his team needs more versatility. He struggles against small-ball lineups and is often exposed when forced to guard perimeter players. His offensive game, while efficient, is limited to finishing around the rim and lacks the versatility seen in other elite big men like Embiid, Jokic, or Sabonis. Gobert's inability to stretch the floor or create his own shot further highlights his one-dimensional nature. While his skill set makes him valuable in specific scenarios, it also makes him a liability in others, requiring the right team context for him to thrive.
On the other hand, Domantas Sabonis presents a different set of skills that contrast with Gobert's. Sabonis is an exceptional offensive player with a versatile game, excelling as a scorer, passer, and rebounder. Despite not being the tallest or strongest center, Sabonis has led the league in rebounds and is known for his exceptional hands. He can score from various spots on the court and is also a capable playmaker, leading the league in triple-doubles at times. However, Sabonis' defensive shortcomings are evident, as he struggles to protect the rim and lacks the shot-blocking ability of players like Gobert.
The contrast between Sabonis and Gobert often places them in competition for recognition, particularly when it comes to All-NBA selections. Sabonis tends to get the nod when his offensive production is outstanding, while Gobert is favored when his defensive impact is undeniable. This dichotomy underscores the differing philosophies teams may have regarding the importance of offense versus defense, and how each player's strengths align with those philosophies.
Isaac Okoro of the Cleveland Cavaliers represents another type of player who has garnered attention for his defensive abilities. Drafted fifth overall in 2020, Okoro was expected to develop into a "three-and-D" wing, capable of locking down opposing perimeter players while contributing offensively as a shooter. While Okoro has indeed become a strong perimeter defender, his offensive game has not progressed as hoped. Despite improving his shooting percentages and increasing his points per game, Okoro remains a limited offensive player who struggles to be a consistent contributor on that end of the floor.
In the regular season, Okoro's defensive skills make him valuable in certain matchups, but his offensive limitations become more pronounced in the playoffs, where teams need players who can shoot and create scoring opportunities. Okoro's inability to fulfill the "three-and-D" role to its fullest potential has led to reduced playing time in crucial moments, highlighting the importance of offensive versatility in today's NBA.
Trae Young, a player known for his offensive prowess, presents an interesting case. Young's game is built around his ability to score and facilitate, often dominating the ball for his team. He has led the league in total points and assists, and his high usage rate reflects his central role in the Atlanta Hawks' offense. However, Young's defensive shortcomings have been a significant point of criticism. Despite improving his defensive awareness and effort, Young remains a liability on that end of the floor due to his size and focus on offense.
Young's offensive game, while prolific, is not without flaws. He has led the league in turnovers per game and is a high-volume shooter with a middling three-point percentage. The Hawks' record without Young in the lineup this past season suggests that the team's success is not entirely dependent on his presence, as the offense can still function effectively with Dejounte Murray running the show.

    This was a cool concept for a video. Rudy definitely one of the most stacked are certain abilities while lacking in other skills guys out there. You did a good job pointing out those contrasts, and I would still very much like to have him on my team. Sabonis is pretty impressive with what he can do at the height and wingspan he has and going against the guys that he has to every night. Would you say that having those 2 dudes together on the same team would allow them to sort of "balance" each other out (in the team context) and would make for a menacing frontcourt for an opponent to have to deal with (their elite contrasting but complimentary talents)? I have only been somewhat aware of Okoro and what he does. Your description seems to fit the sense of what/how I understood him to be, again a guy I would not mind having on my team, but yeah you're also right in how after 4 years you would hope that someone like that would have been able to develop a more well rounded game and be able to help contribute more all around. Interesting take on Trae too, from a considerable defensive liability to improving in that area but still not being quite a "must have" guy on the floor in order to succeed. And yes to the untrained eye he would probably appear to be more "important" than is actually true, good ball handling and hitting those deep shots etc. would make him seem like he is the main man out there. These were all excellent examples for this topic and they each highlight quite well the idea of this subject. Very well done (again). You always mad nice, appreciate you bub. Keep bangin.

Can I just apply and get 60th pick with 1 million on contract? How come Jokic had to go through draft if he was already pro in Europe? Do transfers like in football (soccer) even exist? you enter the draft, nba teams get the picks, All nba players must enter the draft before playing (unless they're over 30 I think), it's one league so players can be traded, No buys a players contract though, after 2004 high school players couldn't enter the draft. hope that's helpful!

I feel like ever since the rise of the three point era began and before the Renaissance of the big men of today, he's an interior defensive menace, now is this a stab at ruby, no. The thing about Gobert is that he isn't even THAT great on defense either. He is all-time level rim protector and is average or below at nearly everything else. If he matches up against center with any type of offensive ability other than dunking, he has to cross match or he is literally unplayable. Minnesota probably would've been in the finals if they benched him against Dallas. He is the epitome of what's wrong with DPOY voting as it values rim protection too heavily. The fact that he is tied for Most DPOYs when guys like Jrue, Brow, and Bam have none is insane. None of them would ever get played off the court in a playoff series.

    There used to be a guy like Okoro a million years ago. T.R. Dunn, mostly of the Denver Nuggets in the 80s. Lockdown defensive player. Really dedicated to it. No offense at all. He had a long career because the Nuggets needed at least ONE guy to play defense and they also had three guys who would score 20 a night (English, Issel, Vandeweghe). Because no one was shooting threes, nobody worried about Dunn only scoring five a night. But with the advent of the three, guys like Dunn don't have careers, and Okoro gets the side-eye because his percentage isn't rising. It's too bad.

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps 6 днів тому

      Yeah, the defensive specialist has fallen by the wayside. Everyone has gotta have some elements of their offense to utilize.

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt 4 дні тому

      It wasn't the threes but the illegal defense rules Before 2004 zone defense was illegal. You _HAD_ to guard your man. If you tried to zone up between your man and just not guard him -- like GS did to Tony Allen -- it was illegal defense. So if you did put your center on Dunn, he would just go stand above the break and your center couldn't go below the FT line so he HAD to be guarded regardless of his offensive abilities. You couldn't play him off the floor. That's why every team would have a defensive specialist. There was no reason not to. (Go watch the Utah-Chicago Finals. Utah has three guys just standing in the same spot and the series is Scottie Pippen trying to time his doubles to avoid illegal defense while Stockton and Malone are in the other side.) That rule change is what spurred the growth in threes. But obviously it took until 2014 for teams to fully realize how to _really_ capitalize on it

    Is there anything in the league or in basketball in general that gets you particularly passionate or heated?

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps 6 днів тому

      I don't like the salary structure. I don't like the load management rules. Rookie draft rights don't seem right to me. Draft lottery odds favoring bad teams. Mostly stuff I don't like. Generally speaking I the NBA is a great league.

      @@whatslaps glad to see that you feel so positively about the league. I think a lot of people are stuck in the negative and nostalgia. I'm just curious because you seem so even-keeled, I wondered what gets you pumped up

    This was a good video. Kinda puts the over specialisation aspect you see in video games to the NBA. Also highlights the importance of teamwork in basketball

      exactly. you can be a one trick pony but that's all you'll be.

      @@whatslaps speaking of one trick ponies, I think stuff like that also boils down to the coach. Like, if you see that your opposing team keeps on fouling one of your players that is good at defending but sucks at free throws.

    Great video as always! Just curious--where does the "be good to your mother, eat a corndog" outro come from? lol

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps 6 днів тому

      I said the corndog thing like 3 years ago on memorial day and the mother thing I said on mother's day 3 years ago. just stuck, now I'm doomed to repeat it.
