Are the NBA finals boring?

Welcome back to the show today. We’re talking about what makes a good NBA Finals and whether or not this particular Finals is a good one. This discussion delves into what makes the NBA interesting, what causes people to lose or gain interest in the league, and what fuels the industry of professional sports. We all love watching our favorite athletes and their games, but there's an argument to be made that most people get just as much enjoyment from the game as they do from hearing commentary later that night or the next morning on shows like First Take.
Think about how much time you spend listening to NBA podcasts or watching NBA UA-cam videos versus how much time you spend watching basketball itself. Even during the season, when there are games every night, many of us still end up listening to more podcasts than we do watching games. Why? Because as human beings, we crave stories, and the media helps provide context to these stories that unfold on the court. Even though this context can sometimes feel more like fan fiction, it connects us emotionally with other human beings.
Sure, you’ve never been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in a historic upset, but you’ve likely felt defeated before. You’ve likely confronted the hard reality of being outworked by someone you thought was inferior. This is how we connect to certain players and why we have aversions to others. The best Finals feature players who fans are most connected to, whether deeply connected like many are with Markelle Fultz-a former number one draft pick who inexplicably lost his shot in his rookie year and has spent the last five years trying to find his place in the Orlando Magic's starting lineup-or broadly connected like LeBron James, whose story is well-known even if not everyone is deeply concerned with his life and career.
If we look at the last 20 years of NBA Finals TV ratings, we see that the highest viewership occurred during the Golden State-Cleveland years, featuring LeBron versus Steph Curry. The 2015 Finals had nearly double the viewership of the Finals in the last five years, and Game 7 in 2016 had more viewers than any Finals game since the 1998 Finals between the Jazz and the Bulls-the "Last Dance" year. So, what made those LeBron-Steph years so special?
Firstly, Golden State was just beginning to acquire bandwagon fans, and Cleveland had the biggest star in the NBA. However, this alone doesn’t explain why these series received more attention than any of LeBron’s Finals in Miami. A key reason was Steph Curry. Coming off his first MVP season in 2015, sports fans fell in love with Steph. Whether it was his family-man image, his faith, his boyish appearance, or his revolutionary three-point shooting, Steph became highly marketable. He was everywhere, becoming more well-liked than even Kevin Durant, the next biggest name in the NBA after LeBron.
This year’s Finals is a building year for the league. Viewership is slightly down from last year, despite the Celtics being one of the most supported franchises and Dallas being one of the five largest markets. Only real NBA fans are invested in these Finals. It takes winning a Finals for a player to transcend basketball. If Jokic were playing for a back-to-back championship, it would garner more attention. Likewise, having LeBron, Curry, or Durant in the Finals would draw fair-weather fans. However, this year will raise the profile of Luka Doncic and players like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who will be in the league for the next decade.
Let’s talk about some of the narratives in this Finals. Tatum and Brown have been to the Eastern Conference Finals five times and the Finals twice but have never sealed the deal. This is similar to Luka, who has been close but never this close. More interesting narratives include Kyrie Irving against his old team, Jrue Holiday possibly winning a championship after being traded from the Bucks, and the potential dynamic shift if Brown wins Finals MVP over Tatum. This could change the team’s dynamic, where Tatum is usually the 1a and Brown the 1b.
For me, the best Finals feature at least one star player nearing the end of his career, playing with intensity and cherishing the experience, knowing it might be their last chance. This year, Al Horford, a future Hall of Famer, embodies this as he relishes his possible last Finals appearance. This adds a compelling plotline to this year’s Finals, showcasing the diverse narratives that make the NBA Finals captivating.

Narratives and storylines can make the games more interesting than they otherwise would be, and can drastically shift a team or player's reputation and legacy one way or the other

this years finals were boring af but that’s cause basically all of the games were complete blowouts, and when you combine that with espn’s genuinely atrocious presentation plus the really weird scheduling (3 days between games?) it just doesn’t feel as exciting. I really don’t think that we need dynasties to make the finals entertaining. 2021 was entertaining as hell and neither of those teams have even reached the conference finals afterwards it’s the presentation that’s really killing the finals imo

    • @whatslaps

My favorite storyline for this series is how people like Chandler Parsons on TV were saying that Luka is pissed with Tingus pingus and that the entirety of Dallas is too. Turns out that a half fit Tingus Pingus was the one who played like he had a chip on his shoulder. That one quarter in game 1 set the tone for the finals imo

Part of me thinks literally no one in the NBA expected the finals to play out this way. I agree with the point abt KD to the warriors making the finals less entertaining. Before he was there it felt like things could go eithe way btwn Cleveland and GS . Once Durant got there most of the suspense was gone. That's part of why I think this current finals isn't getting much attention. To the casual viewer, Boston is far and away so much better than everyone else it's a foregone conclusion they'd win. If it had been the nuggets coming out of the west at least more casual fans would be inclined to see if they could repeat

love the videos, feel like they are entertaining but not too hot-takey. on the technical side of things, i noticed there's shadow in the corners your shot from your green screen lighting. While getting additional lighting could be cost prohibitive, you can also create a mask around yourself in post and cut out the shadowy parts of the shot so only the evenly-lit parts of the green screen are getting keyed out. as long as you don't move around in the shot a ton, it's a fairly effective workaround.
can't wait to see what you have in store this offseason!

genuinely very excited for the game tonight. i think luka will be a whole different beast now that he’s 100% focused on both ends of the floor. i got so excited when he was locking up tatum in game 4!!! eventually a team’s gonna comeback from 3-0, so why not enjoy the possibility? i dont understand people who call this finals boring there’s so much going on man. great video as always!

Yeah I guess it's not surprising that those Steph/Bron finals were so highly viewed, all those elements that you pointed out makes it pretty east for casual fans to want to get more into what is going on to determine the best in the league. That dynasty aspect is interesting too, gives more of a continuation of a story of what is going on (again to the casual fan) rather than just another couple teams showing up that may not be too well known. Brown getting finals MVP could add a wrinkle into the "who is better/what player plays what role" on the team, (maybe Jason Kidd was right? 😳). The effect KD joining Warriors definitely changed the perspective many people had of that team (for the worse, like you said). End of career (well liked) guys (without a chip especially) certainly adds something important/special in the mix, makes you want to root for them extra more (yay Al!). Thanks again bro, always keepin it gangsta.

Steph revived my interest for the NBA in general, when I watched a video, back in 2014, about "How the splash brothers create space and break opponents defenses".
I was always rooting for the underdog (because I am an Sonics/OKC fan and as a PG myself I liked Steve Nash at Suns, so no cigar here), but the GS dynasty (not the KD's one) and Celtics now. I always find fascinating rooting for teams with former Sonics players in, like Orlando magic, Houston Rockets and now LAC or as I say OG OKC, and the narrative and high stakes made that interesting to watch. Yes there were teams like Miami heat, Lakers and Celtics with Allen, Lewis and Payton on the roster but I never like them.
In the end yes narrative and harsh fans can make a final interesting even tho your favorite team isn't a contender. On the other hand, things like game 4 when Adam Silver tried to extend these series with Foster or games like infamous Kings vs Lakers in 2002, makes NBA to look like WWE, boring and scripted.
PS: And there is the fact that the narrative East vs West doesn't hold well, being an international product now.

Also the NBA has "boring" players in the finals right now. The Celtics don't have the peroslnlity + they're polarizing due to choking, being the Celtics, unfun to watch, and Tatum being Tatum. The Mavs have Luka which is an on-court personality due to his play, also Kyrie is great to have in the finals due to him being a fan favorite, but however there is no story. The only Finals with a legit "story" since 2019 has been the Lakers 2020 run do the Kobe (it's a stretch ik) or the Curry FMVP run in 2022.

I think from a game-to-game context, these finals have been average. Game 4 was definitively the most boring if this was the only finals game you watched up to this point because it was an insane blow out that only Mavs fans would be happy with. Within the context of all 4 games though, it was interesting because it was either A: unexpected if you're a casual fan or B: "A classic Celtics chokejob" if you're an invested fan. Now more people are interested to see whether the Mavs can do it again tonight or if Boston can finally give people a reason to believe in them. The fact that people still think Boston could legitimately still choke a 3-0 lead says it all about how much people are actually invested in these finals despite claims of it being 'boring'.

Raw view numbers don't tell you much about whether the basketball product was interesting or not though it just tells you about how well marketed it was and the recognizability of the names. As any good UA-camr knows the real number that tells you whether people are interested or not once they start watching is audience retention. I'd be curious to know what finals series had the highest retention numbers.
