Heavy Pedal Garage
United States
Приєднався 21 лют 2020
HeavyPedalGarage is all about an everyday guy working out of an average garage workshop. Metal work, body work, painting and priming, mechanical, etc. Pretty much everything it takes to do restoration and custom work on old cars and trucks in your own garage.
My current work is focused on a 1975 Firebird.... but its a frankenstein formula, trans am, esprit model. I also have a 1989 Blazer that might show up every now and then.
WARNING: What you see on this channel is based on my own research; reading books, the ole' googlator and of course... UA-cam. So HeavyPedalGarage is simply a chance for me to share and give back to the community that i have learned so much from. So i hope all you everyday garage monkeys out there in your shop are getting some work done on your projects. Cus' if we ain't movin'...our hot rods ain't either.
Please feel free to contact me through commenting on any of my videos or emailing me heavypedalgarage@gmail.com
Enjoy,
Nate

Cleaning, Preparing, and Painting a 5.3 LS / Vortec Block. Pre-Assembly for an LS Swap. 89' Blazer
Now that the engine is disassembled, it needs to be super clean and prepped for paint. Using Rustoleum products to primer and paint. Getting ready to put this motor back together. Lets keep this project moving forward so that we can get this Blazer moving forward as well!
LS swap. Vortec 5.3 liter V8. Pulling this Vortec out of my 2002 Chevy Silverado, refresh the motor, do a cam swap for little more power and get it installed into my 1989 Chevy Full Size Blazer. The 4L60e transmission is going to be used as well.
Follow along as I learn how to do this for the first time. Ill be shareing with you the things i feel like you might need to know from a beginners perspective.

Wow! good job. I'm just wondering if that primer flexes? Also, what paint will you ultimately use ? Do you use any flex additives?
very helpful!! Thank you very much
You're welcome!
Nice video! I'm about to do the same with my '70 lemans. I started by removing all the old nasty vinyl though, so I'm all the way down to foam. Will be interesting for sure. Thanks for the tips!
please be sure to use plenty of glue!
How long should use it at a time? 1-2 hrs at a time? or does it even matter?
not sure. i would check the manufacturers recommendation.
A part 2 of you actually doing the repair's would be greatly appreciated 👍😎💪
@@DispholidusTypus I’ve got several repair videos on my channel that show how it’s done.
Ok thanks 👍 😎 💪! I was wondering if I could use the Bondo Fiberglass Matt and Bondo Fiberglass Cloth with the original Bondo filler or must I use the Bondo Fiberglass Resin or will the results be insufficient?
Great vid man! Helped us out a lot. We're doing a 70 and 81 camaro right now, did our first glass adjustments on the 70 today, took a while but we got it!!
@@coltin_s sweet. Glad the video helped.
Hard pulls on street tires ?
@@mitchellferre1652 good enough for me. I love this car.
@@HeavyPedalGarage I like your reply. It doesn't take 600hp or more to have a boat load of fun
Also is your new trim less bulky compared to OEM, also plastic or aluminum?
This is OEM trim
No, I think the rear valance is bulky, keep the sleek look, better lines, I have a 80 berlinetta, I would like to remove the hood trim, no rust, is it easy to remove without scratching or am I opening Pandora's box? Dave
Thanks, I did not put the valance on. I agree I like the sleek look you might end up scratching the paint when you remove the trim and it could possibly be stained underneath but if you remove it carefully, you could put it back on if you don’t like it. Just my thoughts.
This video is exactly what i was looking for im in the process kf redoing my headliner in a vunil that matches the rest of my interior and want my dash to match but didnt know how well it would work
Thanks. Glad it could be helpful. Just be sure to use plenty of glue.
@@HeavyPedalGarage ok thanks
Thanks for the video. Cant wait to change my steering wheel now! Was the steering wheel ordered through classic industries as well?
I believe so. It’s been a while, but I bought most of my stuff through classic industries. You could also check Summit and JEGS.
Awesome thanks for the video - just starting to do all the door locks, handles etc - From Australia
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback and I hope your project goes well.
I’m dialing in my gaps on my 79z28. Getting my build close to paint. It’s been a long 6 years
Right on. It’s amazing how long this stuff takes. It was nine years before mine was back on the road, but it’s so worth it.
Also that carb filter setup looks restricted.. put check valve in fuel line. At most
I’ve considered that along with a fuel pressure gauge
Maybe gauge cluster is creating sone interference with distributor.?
Gotcha. I’ll have to look into that.
What about the idle solenoid?
?? I’m not sure I understand your question
@HeavyPedalGarage does it come with one, ac kicks on idle needs to be raised.
Outstanding. I still need to figure out how to put a 73 nose on my 76.
It would be similar to the process I went through on this car. I do have a few videos on my channel That shows what I did. if you have the bumper brackets for the 73, all you need to do is attach some tabs to the bottom inside of the fenders, so that the lower valance can be mounted. I made mine out of some scrap metal and welded them onto the fender before I painted. other than that, It’s just body work to get it to match up perfectly. But with the correct alignment bodywork may not be needed.
I’ll check it out! Thanks for the advice/help!
Got me thru thanks !!
Awesome. Glad the video helped.
Is this Firebird bumper made from urethane?
Yes
@@HeavyPedalGarage believe there are a couple different urethanes some are cream color while others are black color, not sure if repairing them is a different process, but I do know that they can be harder to repair than typical ABS or other plastic style bumpers.
Man I loved your video, I then purchased 4 way stretch vinyl, and the same contact cement you used, after hours of gluing, stretching, and rolling, it turned out beautiful!!. Thanks for making your video and this is not a comment to dog on you but a warming to anyone who tried this. FIND A BETTER GLUE. as soon as the sun warmed up, everything came loose, and it all fell off. I'm going to buy a snap on cover to run until I can get the dash professionally rebuilt.
Oh man. Sorry that you had trouble. Mine has held up. I have had to touch up a couple places with extra glue because I feel that I went too light on the first try in places. Did you clean the parts and pieces really really well? I also sanded mine to try to get a better bite. There is that Landau top glue that I mentioned, but I don’t know if that would work any better. sorry you had issues.
If you had the compressor power wire hooked up all of this time, would the binary or trinary switch have prevented it from coming on due to no pressure in the system???
Probably
Thank you. This was helpful. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Had a old camero come in.they had put in new condenser would not work.found a back gas cork the welder left in.
Yikes
Im an expert in composites and this agent can be removed from the surface for a strong bond with any resins (smc or not). First you hit the surface with 80 grit and then clean it really really good with a wax and grease remover. Lastly, do a panel wipe with acetone and it'll bond like hell
Nice. Thanks for the advice!
Absolutely nice job. I'm currently working on an 86 iroc z28 with t-tops.
Thank you. That iroc sounds sweet!
Wish you would have shown the “nutter up” piece. This thing is a bitch.
Thank you for this video! I just changed formula steering wheel to my 72 firebird by following your steps in this video. Damn it looks way better than the original.😋 Greetings from Finland!
Awesome! Glad the video helped!!!
Now I am confused. I am trying to make a repair on the bottom of a boat where the keel meets the hull. It has cracks and its original woven cloth. From the 8s and some of the boat is green at the fiberglass level some is brown. No I believe that it is just fiberglass resin. So I was wondering now what I need. I was planning to using the strongest fiberglass cloth I could find and connect the original that way and to get it smooth so I could finish I was puttin matting on top. So what the heck? use smc? or polyster or what. ? Its a 17 ft sailboat.
if its not apparent, i would consult a professional. Sorry if my info confused you. Im not a pro, just a hobby guy giving my experience. Thanks for checking out the video though.
I just did pax side on my 70 Camaro and I must say you need a lot of patience! 😅 I wish I would of tackled driver side right after pax cus now I have to start all over to refresh on what I did on the first window. Just struggling on having the window roller handle clip to stay in place 😭
A lot of these projects takes sooo much patience. The window adjustments is definitely one of them!
Any recommendations on setting your window handle clip? I’ve been struggling with having it stay on. The clip that is supposed to secure the handle in place is not doing its job. I’ve ordered sets of those clips from different websites and they all end up not holding the handle in place 😭😫 please any help?! I’m losing my mind! I just adjusted my windows
I hope you can get it figured out! mine just clipped in and stayed there.
Looking for regular 2nd gen fiberglass firebird hood in Los Angeles area.
I hope you can find one.
Amazing, this has to be the best video I've seen on window adjustments for our fbody cars. Thank you for sharing and keeping it real. What I like about your videos you explain issues/struggles that will help keep us motivated to fix it. I've been 2 yrs dealing with out of line windows. It can be so frustrating. Your last statement about tilting the rear outward, magically moved the front inwards. That has been my issue. Again, Thank you and I hope you have a great memorial day.
Thank you for the kind words. That helps keep ME motivated. Glad the video could be of assistance. I definitely struggled with the patience needed to get them adjusted correctly.
Excellent video, nice job.
Thank you very much!
Did you have to replace the s shape springs that are under the other seats? I have a few that are a bit rusty and weak, and was hoping for some inspiration for those too? I guess any rod and a brake line bender might be the best approach but wondering what you came up with, if you had replace them before
I didn't have to replace them. Maybe the s hooks off of some rubber bungee cords would work, with some adjustments.
How can I get the rear of the hood to have about a 1.5-2” gap raised from the fenders. I’d like to try something out for some clearance.
open up the holes in the hinge where it bolts to the fender so it can be raised. Or place some shims in between the hinge and the hood.
Really really great
thank you!
How has this held up? The old wire was metal, this new is copper. Copper doesn’t like to be bent a lot similar to metal but worse
It has held up fine. Im 200+ pounds and sits in it regularly. Im sure the plastic coating helps a good bit.
What kind of material are you using here? I need a stretchy vinyl to cover a boat dash
It’s marine grade vinyl from the fabric store.
I am Building a 71. Your videos have helped me immensely. Thank you for doing what you do. I do appreciate all of your knowledge.
Glad to help
Great video but when saying to make sure your working with smc materials you only refer to 1970s vehicles im working on a 1980 so now looking that up will be a hassle in itself some people use this stuff on boats and plastic as well its not easy looking for that information
Ok. Gotcha.
Hell yea, you did that!🦾
Sure did. Thanks!
i would like to put this on my 69 judge. just not a fan of driving with that steering wheel. if its possible?
Not sure. I do like this wheel though.
Awesome
Thanks!
Great video I was wondering what color your car is. Royal Plum?
It’s a UreChem color called sparkling merlot pearl. I love it!
Very nice. Super straight lines 👍
Thank you!
Is that actually a full fiberglass hood? The top looks like plastic and the underside of inner piece looks more like fiberglass.
It’s a fiberglass like material call SMC. Sheet moulded compound. I have a video on my channel that describes the differences.
Thanks for making this video. Did you make one dismantling the rollers and removing the glass ? Thanks
Unfortunately. I disassembled before I started the channel. So I don’t have a video on that.
@HeavyPedalGarage no problem. Thanks again for the one's you made for the 2nd gen f body . Helping me lots. I should have taken many more pics lol.
Yeah, I just went on UA-cam looking for a repair on some Mopar Elastomeric bumpers. And I found this video!
Sweet. Hopefully it was helpful!
Thank you for this. Helped me to adjust the windows on my 74 Esprit. 👍👍
Glad it helped!
Awesome information here. Now i know how to adjust my Camaro windows. They're so outa whack. Thanks ✌️
Glad to help
