Hey whats up!
My names Julian Sacco, I live in Toronto and I’m a knifemaker slash maker of whatever crazy thing I can imagine. I have no professional training, so most of what you see here is a product of trial and error and countless broken blades. Most of my work gets posted on my Instagram, occasionally here. Hope to see you around, cheers!

Finishing A Chef Knife And Saya Combo

I really got into the details on this piece. I put a super cool shattered carbon fiber resin handle that I've been holding on to for some time, I matched the facets of the handle with the saya, and the pin with the butt details on the knife handle. Overall I'm super pleased with the outcome of this one, especially having never made a saya before. Thanks for watching! instagram; saccoknives webs...
How To Fit A Bolster On A Hidden Tang Knife

Not the most technical of videos, but I do get questions every so often about how I fit up my bolsters. So here's a little video with some of the thought process I go through when trying to get a clean fit with the tools at my disposal. If you've got any questions feel free to put them in the comment section and I'll do my best to answer! Thanks! instagram; saccoknives website; www.saccoknives.com
Turning A Mistake Into A Smaller Knife
Переглядів 3,1 тис.6 місяців тому
So this one didn't go exactly as planned, but sometimes that's just the way it goes. Either way I was still able to make something out of it and I think that's the important part here, it can be super easy to get discouraged but it's important to move past that and make the best of it.
How To Bed A Knife Tang

Here's a few little tricks that I like to use when bedding a knife tang, and then a little extra footage of me finishing out this western gyuto. Hopefully this helps or you find some of it useful!
Forging A Gyuto

A full look at one of my forged knives. I'm still fairly new to the process but I'm happy with how far I've come. I decided to add a live edge burl piece for the handle to add to that overall textured feel along with the brute de forge blade. Super thrilled with how this one came together in the end. Finishing Up Some Forged Knives

These are my first two forged knives that were actually for sale. Before this I hadn't sold any because I wanted to make sure whatever left my shop was the best product I could put out. With the help from my friend Steve I was able to complete these two knives. Unfortunately things don't always work out though! That's okay, we try again! Thanks for checking it out! How I Shape A Knife Handle
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
Here's a look into how I shape a knife handle. The keys for me here are using stencils and keeping everything square before I round off the edges. That's simply the best method that I've found to work for me, but hopefully some of it can help you with your process. Thanks for checking it out! www.saccoknives.com instagram @saccoknives
How I Hand Sand My Knives
Переглядів 16 тис.2 роки тому
This is a big one & something I get asked about constantly. How do I hand sand my knives? I believe knowing how to put down a good hand sanded finish is the base of any good blade finish that you wish to achieve. As I've stated in the video, coming off your machines is one of the most important parts to getting a good clean hand sand and will greatly cut back your time. Find some methods that s...
How I Taper My Tangs
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
A little insight as to how I like to taper my tangs. Full disclosure, I like to use the disc method as it's a lot more consistent than my belt grinder. Although good results can be achieved using both with a little bit of practice and patience. The end goal of this video is to show you that there is multiple work arounds and ways to complete one task. Try a few different things and find what yo...
How I Grind My Chefs Knives

Find what works best for you and build on that! Hopefully some of the information in this video can help you along your way. Thanks for checking it out!
How I Heat Treat My Knives In A Forge
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
The second video in my maker series I talk about how I heat treat in a forge. Theres a couple things I've learned along the way, a few "dos" and "don'ts" that have helped me reduce my chances of warping and get the best results out of my steel. A bit of practice and testing with your steel and your set up can go a long way when heat treating out of a forge, so hopefully some of the things I hav...

Any reason for cutting the blade stock right from the middle of the large sheet and not from the edge?
Next level grinding skills. I'm still using a jig.
Nothing wrong with that! I started on a jig as well, they can be very useful
Thanks for a great video & explanation. I'm just starting to contour handles so this is perfect. Could you tell me what the narrow belt is called that you used to round off the hollow section?
Those are just jflex belts that I’ve cut down to smaller sizes
@@saccoknives thanks a lot.
make up a narrow “cabinet scraper” to flatten surfaces inside the Saya.
Not a bad idea. It’s something I’ll have to do for future sayas as this was my first one. Sanding worked well it’s just a bit time consuming
That’s almost a gorgeous knife. Saying that is the best that has come out of your forge isn’t saying much. I have made knives out of leaf springs, truck springs, railroad spikes, different metals and none of them Looked as bad as that knife. You need today least replace or repair that handle, there’s more than one way to put on a handle, do it in two pieces if you need to, do it the same way just not in a knot that’s going to chip out or break. You could tell that when selecting that piece of woods. Sand that metal and polish all of it to a mirror shine. You’re about 90% done with it, finish it right. You may be proud of that, but are you really proud of it? Be honest with yourself because most people won’t be, they are afraid you might do better than them. Me, I don’t give two shits, I will give you my honest opinion to make you better, not blow smoke up your ass.
Dude this is by far the best information I’ve seen on here about grinding chefs!! Thank you so much!
Thank you!! I’ll be doing an update version soon cause I’ve changed some things but glad it’s helping
Definitely would like to see how your hitting the distal taper and convexing the edge in a video
I second an updated grinding video!
If you don't replace the handle then it is obviously junk. Please do the right thing.
beautiful chefs knife
Appreciate the detailed breakdown! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
👏👏👏👏👏🤜🤛
Love your work 🤙🏻
Thank you!
You’re precious. Thank you brother. Cheers from France.
another amazing blade
👊🏼
Good job! 👍👍👍
Amazing work.
Awesome video, good music too ! As a proud owner of two of your knives I can say that they perform very well in the kitchen. Outstanding tools made with a huge attention to details. Would love an updated video about the new grinding technique 😊
Hey that’s awesome! Thanks so much for the support 🙏🏼 I think I’ll most likely be doing an updated video for my bevel grinding
Nicely done ✅😮
Nice work dude!
Thanks!!
Nice
What is the smaller belt you are using? Did you make that yourself or do you find them somewhere?
It’s just a big belt that i ripped into a smaller piece
I’m still struggling with getting my final edge too thin on the initial grind. are you riding the bevel transition on the platen?
Sorry I’m not sure I fully understand?
Awesome ! 😍
Que obra prima
Gorgeous
Hey brother! Wanted to ask you what kind of finish you use for your knife handles? I've been struggling to find something that gives it that color pop that you had with yours. I have tried tung oil, lacquer, minwax etc and just can't seem to get a good finish that gets glossy and colorful/warm. Thanks, absolutely love your videos man!
@@KingParzival personally at the moment I use tung oil as well. I bring my handles up to a 800 grit finish and I think that helps with it. But I believe in this video I buffed it for the final dinish which gives it a nice polished look. In which case I probably used a sisal buffing wheel with pink polishing compound
Sorry not a sisal wheel. It’s a yellow sewn buffing wheel
Absolutely beautiful
Отличный нож получился.
WOW!!!! On one hand you really inspire me!! On the other hand, you create such incredible ART that if makes me want to hang up my tools and take up knitting because I'll never be the artist that you are!!! Just incredible !!!
Haha thanks! But don’t give up!
Nice! How about a shop tour next?
I could definitely do something like that. Although my shop is very very small so it would be quite a short video lol
@@saccoknives That would be great. I think most makers are in a shed or in some shared garage.
thanks a lot for the golden tip
Gotchu
Good to see you leaning into it digimon
Bit of Philly cheese epoxy holds this handles STRONG 💪 😅
nice one, big hug from brazil
🫂
Where do you get the stencils for your makers mark and what device are you using to create this? How do start the thumb groove in the handle?
Man I’ve been making knives for a few years now and I’ve gotten more value out of your videos than probably anything else I’ve come across. You do an awesome job man
I’m so glad to hear that 🙏🏼 if one person gets any value out of my videos than I’ve done what I’ve set out to do. Glad they’re helping you on your knife making journey 👊🏼
So whats the sharpening angle for these chef knives? Thx
Clean rig
All those facets are super difficult. Well done
Thanks!
Supurb detail and work!
can u make a small and tall chef knife
Yep I don’t see why not
What did you put on the brass parts?
Incredible work 👍👍
Thanks!
Start out with thinner wood. Easier to get a thinner saya without a lot of sanding.
Save yourself a tonne of time.
Small enough to handle what you want to do in a saya.
"Forging". Tbh could have saved yourself a lof of time by simply cutting the shape out right away.
I don’t think you understand the concept of forging…
@@saccoknives And what is the concept that makes what I've written untrue? You took a flat piece of steel, heated it a few times, hit it with a hammer a few times and then used angle grinder to get a shape that looked nothing like your "forged" product. For me, personally, "Forging" is a bit of a clickbait in this case.
@@GohanSama stretched a piece of steel, forged in distal tapers in both directions, it all ads a level of uniqueness and character to the final piece. Forging is simply a different way of making a knife. It’s also a way to get more out of your steel by stretching the material.
@@saccoknives You talk about "getting more out of your steel" and then you cut a shitload of it away with an angle grinder. Your grinding skills are top. Your forging needs work. Technically, this knife went through a forge, but I would not call this a forged knife.
@@GohanSama I’m afraid you still don’t understand. And that’s okay
Respect 👍 How many rpm does he run initially bevel grinding?
is it better to fit up a bolster like this or to forge one in? Awesome piece and video!
Like an integral you mean? Forging an integral is a completely different sort of technique, much more difficult than the route I’ve taken here in my opinion. It comes down to personal preference really
