Finishing Up a Custom Order Kitchen Knife

  • This was a pretty neat little knife that I made for a customer. Its some kind of bunka style santoku thing?? I'm not sure what to call it but its damn cool. We decided to throw a clip point on it which I'm very please with, and I'd love to take this design to a full size chefs knife at some point.

    it's somehow aggro and unique but also classy. just getting classy and unique is an accomplishment itself. throw in aggro for the male demo. good shit. crazy to find some random small channel with such a talented young knife maker.

    Great video, was curious what grit you came off the rotary platen with? Heard the finish off of those are like the finish off of contact wheels where they are way nicer than flat platens. Thanks man🙏🏼

      I took it up to 220 on the rotary platen but sometimes I'll go to 400. The finish off a rotary platen is much nicer than a flat platen for this sort of convex knife in my opinion, although I have heared of others getting a very nice finish with a leather backed flat platen

      I took this edge to zero before sharpening

      @@ridhwaanjogiat1708 that’s where a VFD comes in very handy so you can slow the speed of the belt. I come off the grinder nearly at zero & then my hand sanding takes it the rest of the way. If you don’t have a VFD I suggest taking smaller passes with just a touch of pressure behind the edge & keep the blade cool with water

      @@ridhwaanjogiat1708 I do it by hand. everyone has their own way of doing things. for flat bevels I do it on stones. C grinds, convex, hollow grinds, whatever.. Ive done them all by hand for the hell of it at some stage. for a convex I broke it down into various radii which I did one line at a time. Basically like doing many smaller flat bevels then smooth it all out. You don't need power tools for everything especially at the later and finer stages.. I mean unless you're doing this for a living or something. For most its just a hobby

    Beautiful work. What do you use for a finish on the handle. Also, do you stabilize your handles before attaching to the knife?

      Thank you! I don’t stabilize my wood personally but I do buy it stabilized, and for finish I used tung oil

    Brother, this is amazing work, but where in this video did you decide on the angle sharpness to put on this knife? 15 degrees, 20 degrees or 25 degrees?

      Thanks! Generally I aim between 15-20 degrees on the bevel. I sharpen on whetstones so it’s difficult for me to tell you exact numbers

    How do you setup that hand sanding station? What clamps are involved?

      The Kreg Tools table I have set up comes with its own table clamp to hold the piece of wood down, and then just a simple C clamp to hold the blade to that wood
