- This was a pretty cool little stonewash camp knife I made. I sort of went a little in depth on a couple different things, and tried to give you insight and tips on some of the stuff that took me a while to figure out. Hopefully you enjoy it or find some of it useful!

can you share what you use for acid dip? it is so dark and looks great. love the content here.
Hey Ben, it a ferric chloride and water solution. 3 parts water to 1 part ferric chloride
Excellent work. I am discovering your channel and I already subscribed. One question, what is the liquid where you put the knife? Could it also be used to darken a ring? Thanks for sharing, those are great tips.
That was a ferric chloride & water solution. You could used it on a ring depending on what type of steel it is. I only really use it on carbon steel because you get a much darker etch in my experience, I've only used it a handful of times for stainless steel and it hasn't gotten as dark as carbon steel.
How do you approach doing soak times when heat treating with a forge? Have you found a reliable way to control the temperature accurately to keep the blade within the austenizing range?
Usually I do a few test pieces, 3 min soak, 5 min, and 8 min, then quench. Break them open and see what the grain structure looks like and then adjust from there. The only way I’ve found to “control” the temp is either installing a thermocouple or putting a square steel tubing in the forge so you don’t get direct heat on your blade
