Cold Steel Outdoorsman Lite vs Premium
Thanks to those of you who recommended I get the Outdoorsman Lite! It's a great knife, especially for the price, but the side-by-side tests against the premium version were, well, rather surprising.

JXE JXO "Camping Hunting Knife Kit"
Переглядів 20012 годин тому
Atom over at JXE JXO sent me this kit as he heard I was looking for test samples and now have a big green yard to manage. The Amazon price actually went DOWN since I finished the video. I'm personally not a fan of these "textured" blades, but these inexpensive tools performed very well for me. Cold Steel Peacemaker II and III: Martial or Utility?

Getting into some affordable tools, these are presented and self defense knives by Cold Steel but strike me as being more inexpensive utility. Cold Steel SR1 Lite: Tough "Little" Knife

The thick blade falls short in fine slicing, but this "little" beast has become my go-to folder for tasks I probably shouldn't be doing with a folding knife, like chopping and prying when I don't have a proper tool at hand. Lite version (which isn't that light) has Griv-Ex FRN/GFN scales without the support of full metal liners, but it's been incredibly durable. And because I didn't spend much ...

Yes, it definitely takes a LOT of it's design cues from the Cold Steel Espada Premium. It certainly doesn't have the same extreme Triad Lock durability, but there are a few things about it that I actually like a bit better (gasp!), and then there's the price. If it's heavier but you want to use it, ...grow stronger. Even a lesser Hanwei will beat Cold Steel, every time, in my own (meaningful only to me) somewhat learned opinion.

      @michaelrizzo5523 Годину тому

      Over time, this one has become quite manageable for me, in fact it's a favorite training tool. The Hanwei Backsword is a bit more nimble and has better distal taper, but there's something appealing about the Cromwell. I just received their Mortuary Hilt Sword, which is very light. Agreed that the Hanweis are far superior to the Cold Steels, absolutely worth the extra money.

    Ive been looking at various Bowies including the leather neck to pair with my tomahawk for FMA (Arnis). It looks like it would fit the bill, especially with a sharpened reverse swedge, not a fan of the tang even though its far more confidence inspiring than the rat tail on ka-bars.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523 5 годин тому

      This would be suitable, but could absolutely use a sharp back edge. I also use my Laredo because it can take abuse and has a good back edge, and I have a Trailmaster on order. My other favorites for use in all grip orientations in Hawk pairing would be the B&S Freedom Fighter and my Cudemans, or maybe the larger Gold Rush, but I had to sharpen the back edges on these. If you want to go bigger and more massive I'd suggest the CS Wild West or the 1917. Depends also on how much/what shape guard you want and if you want that back edge straight or recurved. Sounds like I need to add a video comparison to my to-do list.

    One thing changed many knives for me. I bought a kit to make a kydex holster. Instead of holster i made a sheath. Then went back on Amazon bought some kydex. Now every knife i own is a custom. Being lefthanded i stayed away from fixed blades for years. People don't realize how important a sheath is. Basically it's the difference between having a useful tool on you, or having a knife in a drawer. Great video's sir i throughly enjoy your content. I believe, God forbid, you use that on someone the fight will end quickly. As far as pulling it out in public I prefer to carry 2 knives. Usually a buck 110 or 12 or an Openel or something and usually something bigger for “martial” purposes. Good video. Great aspects. I really enjoy my XL Espada. Great for food prep and getting a laugh from friends at the barbecue and what not. It takes up a lot of real estate in your pocket but other that that it carries comfortably in my experience. more 19th century style sabers often have a very nice hand protection to encumbrance ratio. with some wideness near the top but usually slimming down into a single bar at the bottom of the handle. a lot more free to wear and weild while still offering pretty good protection for the most vulnerable parts of the hand.

      I have a Windlass 1850 Foot Officer's Saber, an 1860 Light Cav, and Cold Steel's so-called "Napoleon" that I need to review. I find I can effectively cross-train saber and backsword if I compensate for the curvature or lack of, and the saber isn't too blade heavy. I really like the way these 19th century sabers handle, though I'm not a huge fan of the right-biased 3-bar guards only because I train ambi, but I don't think they feel "lopsided" like some reviewers have complained of.

      Neither are the OSI and OSS, same grip. I think the Black Bear Classic is the only steel sub hilt they make. The rubber is kinder on the finger bones under the impact of a hard thrust, and the guard is too small to count on it stopping another blade anyway, so it's just there to give you more grip security and leverage. I'm not a personal fan of the Karambit crescent geometry, but I'll be doing a series on the Ka-Bar TDIs, and there are similar designs out there that give you that angled hook-cutting blade but a straighter tip angle for stabbing, like a punch knife but better in my arthritic hands. For me, they work in forward grip better and more naturally than a karambit, but they're good in reverse too. These were apparently designed specifically for off-hand emergency use.

I live in Oregon, so I contacted the Fred Lohman company because I know they make repro shin gunto fittings (so I could have it converted to an NLF style gunto) but when I reached out, I received an email back saying that the company has shut down for the foreseeable future. Do you know of anyone in the PNW that might be able to install reproductions of those parts I mentioned? The only one I personally know that works on Japanese style swords it Adam Novath, as I (questionably) do all my own work. I've seen good quality brass, copper and antique original fittings online from time-to-time, but they may or may not fit your sword as there's some variation in saya and tsuka thickness. The hardest part is getting the ashi and semegane slipped onto the saya and snugged down in the right places without chewing up the saya finish.

      Since I was able to fix my main issues with the Laredo easily enough, and it's proven itself in long term hard use, I am considering the Natchez, but the Trailmaster is ahead of it on my wish list.

    I just got my large G10 espada and am carrying it and it's just the right size. I believe that the xl version is too big and heavy to edc but I will probably still get one for the novelty of it

    Mike thanks for your commitment to doing these excellent and intelligent reviews. I think your knife channel is among the most interesting in having diverse types of blades for martial applications. You have a very interesting choice of blades, even though I picked on you for buying a Laredo Bowie in 4036 stainless a while back. I've had lots of problems with Cold Steel this year and I really need to expand into other knife brands to expand my collection. Mike I know they are pricey but check out WORKTUFF GEAR if you get a chance.

    16:55 This is a finishing knife. Designed purely for dispatching game. I've seen more than one us video mistaking this pattern as a fighting knife due to its shape and gaurd. But its traditiknal in Spain and Portugal for hunting bosr with dogs where dispatching with a gun could injure the dogs.

    If I’m understanding correctly, you don’t like liner locks on knives but you should give the Ti-Lite a go.

      Not a fan of frame locks, but liner locks are fine if they're well fit and reasonably sturdy. I had lock jam issues on both my CS Luzons, and one of my friends had the same problem with his Ti-Lite, so I'm a bit wary of CS liner locks.

      @@michaelrizzo5523I haven’t had any trouble with the 3 ti-lites I own, 2 are older 1 is newer. If anything changes I’ll be happy to let you know. The ti-lites can be had for fairly cheap these days.

    Such weird sheaths !?!! I had been looking at these when they came out but had no clue the sheaths were so strange (bad). Kind of on a bit of a cold steel boycott the now anyway but thanks for the video !

      Really aggravating sheath design. Makes me not want to carry them.
